Our mission and vision

Milky Way Picture Books is an independent Canadian imprint dedicated to high-quality illustrated children’s books.

Since its founding, Milky Way has believed that it’s never too early to introduce children to books as spaces where beauty, imagination, and storytelling come together. The imprint’s mission is to spark a lifelong love of literature, illustration, and art by offering books that invite children to return to them again and again.

Milky Way Picture Books publishes works that stand out for their strong narratives, literary richness, visual artistry, and thoughtful design. While fiction remains at the heart of its publishing program, the imprint embraces a wide range of genres — including picture books, comics, word books, and creative non-fiction — always with an eye toward originality and aesthetic excellence.

With a growing international presence and a dedication to creative collaboration, Milky Way Picture Books continues to craft titles that inspire wonder and foster meaningful connections between children and books.

Bringing the world to young readers

Milky Way Picture Books publishes works by creators from around the world, with a strong commitment to translation and cross-cultural storytelling.

We believe that books created within different cultural contexts bring essential narrative, aesthetic, philosophical, and conceptual richness. They offer children alternative ways of understanding family, community, identity, and the world around them.

At Milky Way, we want young readers to experience a truly global literature — one that broadens perspectives and encourages empathy, curiosity, and reflection. Just as adults benefit from reading voices beyond their own borders, we believe children, too, deserve access to stories from diverse cultures and viewpoints.

By publishing international works in translation — as well as original creations by artists and authors from diverse backgrounds — we aim to help children imagine not only who they are, but also who others might be. Our catalogue reflects the belief that there are many ways of being in the world, and that every child deserves access to stories that expand their view of it.

Age 10+

A fast-paced, visually stunning homage to nature about resisting and surviving the conditions of an unforgiving world.

A sudden roaring noise rips through the twilight. When the silence returns, a father toad is left lying on the pavement. Gathering his last ounces of strength, he carries his eggs to the salvation of a nearby pond—and from the only unharmed egg hatches an orphan tadpole, Alyte. Barely born and already a survivor, Alyte is forced to escape from birds, bears, and other gods of the river. Along the way, however, he encounters new friends in nature, each of whom teaches him about the world in their own way, awakening him to all of its beauties. From creator Jérémie Moreau, Alyte confronts the often violent, unforgiving nature of the world we live in—as close to us as it is invisible—with the notion of resistance as an act of survival.

People Are Weird

A lighthearted, thought-provoking—and yes, weird!—story about celebrating the different quirks we all have.

Have you ever noticed that the world is full of weird people? Anywhere you go, there are those who dress unconventionally, have their own unique fears, pretend to be other people, and generally go about things in their own mysterious ways. In fact, one might even say that we’re all a little bit weird in our own little way! From award-winning picture book creators Victor D. O. Santos and Catarina Sobral, People Are Weird explores the different quirks we humans possess from the perspective of a child living out an average day. One thing becomes quickly evident: Not only is it normal to be weird, but it might even be weird to be normal...

Age 5+

A potent story about the power of talking through our fears to set ourselves free of them.

Our fears can consume the entirety of our lives — unless we find ways to free ourselves of them. As a young rabbit tries to fall asleep one night, kept awake by the trauma of his family’s past life in a war-torn region, he replays scenes in head of an entirely new battle: being attacked by bullies the previous day at school. While his mother tries to encourage him to open up about the incident itself, he hesitates, instead questioning whether he possesses enough courage at all. It’s only through addressing the root of his fears, a process that is never easy, that he understands how to free himself and move forward.

I Will Not Be Scared

Colette, the Solitary Bee

A heartwarming introduction to reading about how even solitary beings need people too.

Anyone can make it on their own— just ask Colette! She’s a solitary bee who enjoys her own company more than anyone else’s and thrives on her independence. Colette can do just about anything by herself: day-to-day tasks, cleverly navigating the elements, and even setting out on solo adventures. But sometimes, even the most solitary bees need other insects around—like when things don’t go as planned, or when they’ve simply got a good story to tell. An adorable, heartwarming tale that shows us we can be proud to do things by ourselves, but it’s also pretty great to share our lived experiences with those around us.

A clever, joyful story about a king with everything who goes searching for

nothing — literally.

There once lived a king who had absolutely everything — and we mean everything. From elephants without trunks, to caramel-flavored ice skates, to caterpillars on bicycles, and even storm clouds that refused to make lightning. Yes, there was simply nothing you can imagine that this king did not have… well, except for nothing itself. From author-illustrator Olivier Tallec, The King and Nothing is the wonderfully whimsical and philosophical take of one person who searches high and low for nothing, only to encounter something at every turn. Just how far will the king go to find nothing?

The empowering tale of a knight who emotionally sheds the only identity he’s ever known to discover his true self.

From the moment he was born, all Milo has ever known is knighthood. He eats, sleeps, and breathes it every moment of his life, never taking his armor off even for a minute. After all, Milo lives in the shadow of generation upon generation of knights before him and feels duty-bound to defend his colony should a dragon ever attack. But while training one day, rain begins to fall and eventually turns Milo’s armor to a pile of rust, leaving the young knight weakened and unable to move. It isn’t until a chance encounter with a court jester, who helps him shed his armor and lay down his spear, that Milo has his first taste of freedom.

Fountas & Pinnell reading level: T (grade 5)

A comforting, poetic picture book about the beauty and brutality of life and death, inspired by two Icelandic volcanoes.

Carried in by a strong wind, a tiny creature named Hekla twirls delicately into a crater, falling at the feet — and, very suddenly, into the life — of an old giant named Laki. Each is vastly different from the other: Laki is a solitary being, preferring order and calmness, while Hekla is young, spirited, and messy. But in their newfound state of coexistence, they learn to live together and help each other grow, forging an attachment that binds them in life — and in death. Inspired by two Icelandic volcanoes, Hekla and Laki is a masterstroke of text and image about the beauty and the brutality oflife, the passing of knowledge over time, and the sense of optimism that emerges in death.

A beautiful narrative non-fiction picture book that invites readers to follow Little Mouse in her charmingly painted journey through the exploration of nature.

Little Mouse loves mint tea and lemon cookies and enjoys reading encyclopedias. One day, the roots of a plant pierce the ceiling of her burrow. Amazed, she realizes that she doesn’t know much about the nature around her—but it gives her an idea. She decides to write her own encyclopedia! The reader follows Little Mouse as she explores, questions, and experiments her way into the worlds of insects, trees, birds, and amphibians, both on land and in water, to discover many ecological processes and phenomena. It’s the perfect book for born explorers who want to learn about the wonders of nature.

REVIEW

Clara and the Birds

Age 4+

Fountas & Pinnell

A delightfully imaginative story of a girl who’s always wanted a dog, who shows us that love knows no bounds.

For as long as she can remember, Clara has always been fascinated with birds — where they go, how they take flight, and the way they immediately fly away from her when she comes into contact with them. Like the birds she so admires, Clara is considered shy by those around her. She, too, feels the urge to flee the company of others, preferring the comforting bubble of solitude instead. Convinced that her desire to be alone is a weakness, she fails to find her voice or recognize her own inner strength. That is, until she has a chance encounter with a bird who doesn’t immediately fly away.

In this metaphor about life, a field mouse summons its inner strength in this timeless tale about taking on life’s many obstacles.

One morning, out for one of its usual walks, a field mouse discovers something rather unusual: a mysterious blue object sitting at the foot of a big rock. As a group of animals gather to carefully inspect the object, they realize that a robin’s egg has rolled down from its nest all the way at the top. Wondering who will roll it back up, the field mouse quickly volunteers, only to be met with laughter and mockery from its fellow animals. The field mouse, spurred on by a determination to prove them wrong, musters all of its strength to take on the Sisyphean task — but will it succeed?

A cunning owl and a distracted cat attempt to outsmart each other in this charming, timeless fable.

One day, Grey Cat stumbles upon a surprise in one of his usual fishing spots: a small wooden rowboat containing a bucket of fresh fish sitting idly. Curious and eager to snatch it up, Grey Cat seeks the help of a nearby owl, who is willing to lend a hand if Grey Cat helps him free his claw from under a log. But will Grey Cat choose to help the owl — or is he too eager to reach the rowboat and grab his newfound treasure?

REVIEW

“Gouache, watercolor, and pencil give this tale, translated from French, a classic, almost oldfashioned look in the vein of the early Little Golden Books, albeit with some heady design choices. Meanwhile, the smartly led storytelling eschews moralizing in favor of letting actions speak for themselves. Aesop himself would be pleased with this original parable of brains outsmarting greed.” — Kirkus Reviews

A hybrid comic and seek-and-find book that contemplates art and creativity.

Van Dog rides to the countryside to paint a landscape one day. As he mounts his easel, mixes his paints, and contemplates the scenery, the landscape slowly unfolds in weird and wonderful ways: a snail nibbles on a mushroom, ants gather to work, and a giant lizard monster sets off on a journey to Tokyo. As the landscape becomes busier and busier, Van Dog struggles to finish his painting — but is he overwhelmed by his subject or is the richness of the countryside precisely what inspires him?

A young girl and a rainbow inspire us to nurture love and know when to let it go.

One sunny morning, a young girl catches a beautiful rainbow and places it in a glass jar. An instant bond is formed and the two become inseparable. But for the rainbow, homesickness eventually sets in — and no matter what the girl does to cheer it up, it can’t escape feeling unwell. To make things right again, she must make a gut-wrenching decision and, in the process, learn the hard way what love truly means.

“The furniture and clothes in the softly colored digital illustrations project a late 1960s, early 1970s style. The child’s checked hat echoes the rainbow’s colors, connecting the two of them visually.
