Greetings friends and partners,

The Spectrum Center, like many of us, has been changed by the pandemic. We know that members of our community continue to experience loss, hardship, and trauma. We want you to know that we are here as a source of support and a bridge to resources on campus and in the community.

Among the challenges of this year has also come important shifts in our work, creating space for people to come together in new and often more accessible ways. Throughout the 2020-2021 year, we have been busy preparing for the Spectrum Center’s 50th anniversary. It has been incredibly rewarding looking back on fifty years of LGBTQ+ campus activism and connecting the work of so many before us to our current mission. Today, the Spectrum Center continues to enhance the campus climate for LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty through focusing on education, advocacy, and community building.

This year, we transitioned our programs and services to virtual platforms, engaged in new partnerships and collaborations resulting in over 30 events, connected students to financial resources through increased grants and scholarships, and celebrated a record number of students through Lavender Graduation.

We are particularly excited to launch the student-led LGBTQ+ Oral History Project in Fall 2021, which is a partnership with the Center for Academic Innovation, UM Library, and the Bentley Historical Library. This project, modeled after Princeton University LGBTQIA Oral History Project, centers the voices and lived experiences of LGBTQ alumni, students, as well as current and former staff and faculty during their time on campus. This project is intended to fill a gap in the current archive collection of LGBTQ narratives while providing students with a unique learning opportunity in oral history.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our work this year. Our ability to serve the campus is a direct result of the support we receive. Students, staff, and faculty in all areas of our campus are supporting our mission and we thank you. Our alumni and friends continue to provide critical advising and resources to ensure our students are successful today and into the future. We look forward to coming together in person and virtually throughout the next year.

Mission With sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as our framework, the Spectrum Center is committed to enriching the campus experience and developing students as individuals and as members of communities. Our work is accomplished through a studentcentered, intersectional lens.

The Spectrum Center envisions an inclusive campus community free of discrimination in all forms where social justice inspires community engagement and equity.

Principles of Work Accessibility We strive to be available and accessible to members of our campus and wider community in as many ways as possible. We focus on thoughtful and prompt communication, listening, and responding to student needs and desires in meaningful ways.

Action We believe that we must proactively do something to create our vision in partnership with campus and the wider community. In our action we value innovation by looking for new ideas and perspectives, and we work to always be on the cutting edge. Our vision is one of social justice in which we collaboratively fight oppression across multiple issues and -isms. In our work we navigate the complexity that comes with being social-justice oriented within a large institution.

Collaboration We work to create an inclusive and collaborative space through our programming and physical space across multiple issues, multiple offices, and within our own office. We value all contributions, and we work as a collective system in which everyone contributes what they can in a feasible and effective manner.

Education Our office works to constantly gain information about the field of LGBTQA affairs, student affairs, and our own student body through research, professional development, and on-the-job learning. We believe it is our responsibility to share our knowledge, experiences, and expertise in order to engage our campus and wider community in learning and reflective practice. We strive to be a learning organization by fostering a culture of challenging, modeling, and learning from one another. As constant learners we know that we, as an office, do not have all the answers; we are open to teaching and learning

Student Leadership Our work is accomplished through teams, each made up of professional staff, graduate, and undergraduate students. We value student engagement with a focus on self-authorship. We seek to enhance spaces to selfidentify and contribute student voice and ideas.

Transparency We engage in transparency both internally (among our staff, student staff, and volunteers) and externally (with campus and community constituents) through communicating context, sharing as much information as possible, acknowledging help and insight from others and other institutions, and avoiding unilateral decision-making.

COVID-19 Considerations Similarly to the entire country and the rest of the world, Spectrum Center had to shift its operations and adjust to the public health guidelines as recommended by the Center for Disease Control, the State of Michigan, and University leadership in approaching the pandemic known as COVID-19.

Office Operations The center’s operations and offerings went completely remote starting March 2020.

Considering this unprecedented situation, many in-person services were canceled such as the free rapid anonymous HIV/STI testing, student walk-ins, and reservation of spaces

by LGBTQ groups. The staff had to think creatively on how to remediate this abrupt pause of operations. While group and individual meetings transitioned virtually, Spectrum Center worked with Unified: HIV Health and Beyond and UHS Wolverine Wellness to continue the testing services at the UHS facilities which stayed open throughout the entire pandemic.

Lavender Graduation This commencement ceremony centers LGBTQ+ graduating students and is typically held in person with graduates’ families and friends. However, considering the pandemic, the staff created a celebratory website to honor University of Michigan LGBTQ graduating students. More information can be found on Page 28 of this report.

Expanding Welcome Events Traditionally, there have been two events centering LGBTQ+ students during Welcome Week in the fall semester: Pride Outside and LGBTQ+ Graduate Mixer. However, considering the inability to host large gatherings, Spectrum Center organized multiple virtual events introducing new and returning students to LGBTQ resources on and off campus, LGBTQ student organizations, while attempting to build a sense of community through social events such as Virtual Drag Bingo. The series of events lasted over a few weeks to allow students to virtually explore other Welcome Week events.

Health and Wellness Week changing to Health and Wellness Season A major learning lesson from the fall semester of 2020 was students were burnt out with so much screen time and reluctant to attend events through Zoom or other virtual platforms.

Hence, the Spectrum Center staff made some adjustments to the week-long series of events that typically occur during Health and Wellness Week. By spreading these events out, it allowed for students to recuperate from excessive screen time as well as accommodate busy schedules. The series of events was renamed to Health and Wellness Season and spanned over the month of February 2021.

Involvement

Volunteer Opportunities GPS Mentors (Guidance - Perspective - Support) GPS is a tool for LGBTQ+ and similarly-identified students to utilize as they are navigating their understanding of their identities. GPS mentors help provide resources, useful perspective of their own experience and support around identity development.

CenterSpace Hosts CenterSpace provides a monthly drop-in space for different communities within queer life at the University of Michigan. CenterSpace hosts help create space for people of similar identities to gain support from one another while building a community of collective resources.

SAGE Detroit, Friendly Caller Program SAGE Metro Detroit’s Friendly Caller Program seeks to increase social connections and reduce social isolation among LGBTQ+ older adults. The Friendly Caller Program matches LGBTQ+ older adults with friendly callers for weekly calls to share life events, hobbies, interests and to check in on their well-being. The Spectrum Center partners with SAGE Detroit to help connect volunteers from the U-M community to folks seeking connections through the Friendly Caller Program of SAGE Detroit.

Programming Board

The Programming Board is a volunteer leadership opportunity and student organization run through the Spectrum Center, supporting major events and hosting our own unique programming. Our goal is to provide students the opportunity to develop and organize events that are LGBTQ+ student-centered and have input on Spectrum Center initiatives.

Members gain skills around event planning, facilitation, outreach, and activism. We welcome students of all fields and programs; undergraduate, graduate, and professional alike.

This year, we experimented heavily with our leadership and meeting structure, hoping to make this work as adaptable as possible and to center community building among members. This resulted in flipping our typical meeting agenda, meeting up for weekly study and social hangouts, and developing new tools to guide planning and evaluation.

MaPPS & GPS

Our GPS and MaPPS mentorship programs shifted to an entirely virtual format to accommodate our remote setting. This year, we saw a high number of student mentees sign up for the program and worked to address their social, academic and emotional needs through partnering with student, staff and faculty mentors across the community. We also piloted our first ever mentee training to help prepare students for maximizing their mentorship relationships.

You Deserve Care:

Finding a Therapist that Fits Your Needs Integrative Empowerment

An interactive workshop centering the needs of QTBIPOC looking for therapists, lead by Kulky Nakai Psy.D. LP of local social justice centered therapist collective Integrative Empowerment.

Name Change Clinic JTCC OUTreach, Outlaws

A very important and popular event in any year, this workshop brings together legal experts and transgender activists to explain the process of changing one’s legal name, with specific instructions for those applying in Washtenaw County.

Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Youth: the Role of Policy and Providers

Sexual and Gender Diversity in Public Health For National Coming Out Week, we teamed up with the student organization Sexuality and Gender Diversity in Public Health (SGDPH) to host Gary Harper, Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education and Global Public Health at the School of Public Health. Young people who identify as LGBTQ+ face significantly higher risk for depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, and his talk focused on what primary care providers can do to be well-equipped to serve their needs.

BHM Closing Speaker Janaya Khan Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs

Janaya Khan (they/them), a black, queer, gender-nonconforming activist, staunch Afrofuturist and social-justice educator, spoke on the topics of Black Lives Matter and their experiences bring gender non-conforming in activist spaces and social movements in this closing event for Black History Month.

Virtual Bi-Runch Bilateral

This Bi+ Visibility Day, we and a newly re-formed student organization for bi+ students hosted a social brunch over Zoom.

There, organic discussions about personal identity, individual experiences, and socially visible bi+ people were had over students’ favorite brunch-time foods.

The Intersections of Black LGBTQIA+ Identity and Mentorship Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs

Planned by some of our fantastic student staff, this event put the spotlight on a number of Black LGBTQ+ students and allowed them to speak on their experiences and how mentorship has helped them challenge barriers and access resources during their time at UM. We were able to point to many mentorship programs available from Spectrum and MESA for attendees who haven’t gotten a chance to form a vital connection with someone to serve as a mentor.

LGBTQ+ Oral History Project

UM Library, Center for Academic Innovation, Bentley Historical Library To complement Spectrum Center’s 50th anniversary, the University of Michigan LGBTQ+ Oral History Project started in the summer of 2019 by the Spectrum Center, in partnership with institutional stakeholders such as the UM Library, the Center for Academic Innovation, and the Bentley Historical Library. This three-year project is led and implemented by undergraduate students with the guidance of the Spectrum Center and its partners. The focus of this project is to document the artform of storytelling of LGBTQ+ alumn’s experiences while they were students University of Michigan. The interviews are recorded and are accessible through the Bentley Historical Library for years to come after the launch of the project in October 2021.

PPE Challenge

Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, Program on Intergroup Relations The Power, Privilege, and Equity (P.P.E.) @ Michigan Challenge was created to prompt reflection and dialogue on how COVID-19 will impact students based on their social identities and living situations. The Challenge was offered as a one-week Canvas course in early August 2020 and focused on six topic areeas: Race, Immigration, Technology, Finances, Health, and Home.

Over 70 students engaged with self-directed learning, attended office hours, and participated in online activities to encourage personal growth and develop their understanding of what a fully virtual academic year would mean to a diversity of their fellow Wolverines. This entire program was inspired by the United Way of Washtenaw County’s Equity Challenge series, which continue to be offered in 2021.

QTBIPOC Highlights Trotter Multicultural Center, Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs

During the summer, we, MESA, and the Trotter Multicultural Center came together with the goal to create some positive attention for Queer and Transgender Black, Indigenous & People of Color, to balance out the important but draining media coverage during that time 34 posts highlighting different QTBIPOC orgs, artists, and activists over the month of July tagged with #CelebrateQTBIPOC.

Chitra Ganesh

University of Michigan Museum of Art In collaboration with the University of Michigan Museum of Arts, Spectrum Center invited Chitra Ganesh, a Brooklynbased contemporary artist of South Asian origin, who creates installations, comics, animation, sculpture, and mixed media works on paper. Her process often engages historical and mythic texts as inspiration and points of departure to create new representations of culture, femininity, sexuality, and power, and to bring queer femme perspectives typically absent from canons of literature and art. Students engaged in conversations on how Ganesh employs research to approach these large ideas, identities, and histories in her research and creative process.

First-Gen/Low-Income LGBTQ Experiences Ruth Ellis Center / Poverty Solutions

Another student staff-lead event, The Rainbow Coat Panel featured four folks who work with and exist as queer people navigating college as a first generation student and/or a low income student. The panel covered topics such as the role of mentorship, resources that can be made more accessible, and how universities can better serve students at the intersection of these identities.

Education & Training Our Education and Training team delivered a high number of virtual workshops on LGBTQ+ identities and inclusion to student, staff and faculty groups across UM. in addition to these workshops, we also partnered with academic departments and Student Life units to deliver virtual workshops on specific relevant topics. In the fall, we partnered with the International Center for a workshop on pronouns within an ESL context in recognition of International Pronouns Day. We also delivered a hybrid panel and workshop on Trans Inclusion in Healthcare to graduate pharmacy and social work students.

Lastly, our team partnered with MESA to facilitate conversations on allyhood development during the MESA Welcome Program in the fall and with three student groups in the winter semester.

Faith & Coming Out Faith & Coming Out was a student & parent panel on family, community, and loving yourself. Many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community have questions, fears, and hopes about how their queerness interacts with their faith, but it’s not a subject often talked about. In an effort to help our students understand themselves better, we brought together five people to share their stories about coming out or being come out to.

Virtual Drag Bingo Drag bingo isn’t something we’ve tried hosting before, but, inspired by the popularity of virtual versions of this game night, we hosted it as our flagship Welcome Week event to great success. Dozens of students joined us for an hour of bingo hosted by local drag troupe Heads Over Heels. We held it again as our last event of the Winter semester and had another very successful event, offering a fun and stressrelieving space for our community in the midst of finals and at the end of an incredibly stressful academic year.

Worthy Bodies Series All trans people are beautiful, and that sentiment is not always expressed. In times of isolation and disconnect from community, transgender and nonbinary individuals can lose sight of self-love and body positivity.

The Worthy Bodies workshops were put on to create space for that body positivity and discuss how gender identity and presentation impact transgender and nonbinary students’ self-perception. The event, originally developed in partnership with CAPS last year, was held once during Trans Awareness Week and then turned into a two-part series during LGBTQ+ Health and Wellness Season.

The University of Michigan Spectrum Center was established in 1971 as the first center in higher education supporting LGBTQ students on campus. Since its founding, the center has continued to be a national leader innovating services and programs for students through an intersectional lens including advising, student support and advocacy, professional mentorship with LGBTQ staff/ faculty, and leadership development. In celebrating the Spectrum Center’s 50th anniversary, the center invites institutional and local community affiliates to contribute to this celebration in various creative and innovative ways by celebrating the legacies, current context, and forward movement of LGBTQ+ communities.

LGBTQ+ Oral History Project One of the main projects being executed in celebrating the Spectrum Center’s 50th anniversary is the LGBTQ+ Oral History Project. In partnership with the U-M Center for Academic Innovation, this project is a two-year student-driven initiative that highlights the experience of U-M LGBTQ+ alumni during their time as a student at the institution. A team of four students has been conducting audio and video interviews which will be archived in the Bentley Historical Library for future research and knowledge-building.

U-M LGBTQ Alumni Association The U-M LGBTQ Alumni Association, as a chartered affiliate of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, seeks to bring together alumni, faculty, students, staff, friends, and allies of all gender identities and sexual orientations in support of each other and to promote the objectives of the University of Michigan. This group has been revamped a couple of years ago and now seeks to build a sustained and meaningful LGBTQ community among U-M alumni.

A collective of professional and student staff within the Spectrum Center that ensure accountability and forward motion of dismantling whiteness and enacting antiracism in our practices, policies and procedures. The structure and projects of the Lab are determined yearly by participants.

DWAR Goals: • Investigating how LGBTQ+ Centers across the country are prioritizing and engaging in anti-racist work • Examining gaps and opportunities for the Spectrum Center in how we can better center and support QTBIPOC students/staff/faculty • Creating and integrating a framework for the role of anti-racism and dismantling whiteness in our Center • Identifying opportunities for sustained integration throughout our organization
