MESSAGE FROM THE CO-DIRECTORS

F

rom our foundations to this moment, we’ve believed that learning to listen, to bravely and vulnerably share our

stories, and to talk across differences is our contribution to make the world a better place to live. The skills we teach in The Program on Intergroup Relations are as necessary today as they were when the program was founded 35 years ago.

The COVID pandemic has continued to shape the program in new ways, and this report details our work and key areas of growth over the past couple years. We’ve found the flexibility afforded by technology has enhanced our work in exciting ways, allowing us to reach constituents who previously may not have found us accessible. Our National Intergroup Dialogue Institute, now in its 17th year, has been conducted remotely for four years, allowing for greater accessibility to more

CommonGround workshops, a graduate student seminar, and more.

We’ve said goodbye to two staff members—we thank our departed colleagues Amanda Feaganes and Emely Hernandez Rubio for their time with us.

The Program on Intergroup Relations is a social justice education program.

IGR blends theory and experiential learning to facilitate students’ learning about social group identity, social inequality, and intergroup relations.

The program prepares students to live and work in a diverse world and educates them in making choices that advance equity, justice, and peace.

IGR was founded at the University of Michigan in 1988, the first program of its kind. IGR is a partnership between Student Life and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

Summer Youth Dialogues Through the Summer Youth Dialogues program—a partnership between IGR and the School of Social Work—U-M students learn about and facilitate critical diversity dialogues with high

NEW COURSE ANNOUNCED

ALA 370: Race Dialogues in High Schools In summer 2023, we announced a new course we’ll begin offering in 2023-24: Race Dialogues in High Schools. The first few weeks of the course will be entirely in the college classroom, preparing to enter the high school setting, practicing facilitation skills, and building confidence with the curriculum. Then students will spend 10 weeks meeting both as a practicum class with the instructors and meeting in a local (walking distance) high school facilitating the students in dialogue.

Minor declarations Students interested in developing critical analytical skills, problemsolving in groups, intercultural leadership, and intellectual and practical skills to create a more just, equitable world may declare a minor in intergroup relations education. In May 2023, we celebrated 10 graduates completing the requirements for their minor in the 2022-23 academic

Strategic initiatives and partnerships Community of Scholars Community of Scholars is an intentional space for U-M faculty and staff to gain skills and experience with Intergroup Dialogue and dialogic pedagogy, while building meaningful relationships with passionate colleagues and IGD practitioners.

Under Shana Schoem’s leadership, we grew our offerings for U-M faculty and staff this year, expanding the Community of Scholars program to now include an 8-session intergroup dialogue. These dialogues complement our existing seminar on pedagogy, now called Intergroup Dialogue Basics.

Launching Intergroup Dialogues for Faculty and Staff Intergroup Dialogues for Faculty and Staff is an 8-session pilot Intergroup Dialogue on race for U-M faculty and staff, first offered in winter 2023 and co-facilitated

Diversity and Inclusive Teaching seminar The overarching goal of the Diversity and Inclusive Teaching seminar is to expose graduate student instructors to a range of evidence-based inclusive teaching practices and IGR frameworks that productively acknowledge and engage instructor/student identities and experiences in the learning process. It also covers best practices for inclusive course design and explores techniques for managing student resistance and conflict. This seminar is designed to: 1. build relationships between GSIs and the facilitators and amongst the participants; 2. develop awareness and knowledge around social identities and power structures; and 3. increase skills and confidence in applying this

Advancing the field

Consultations IGR faculty and staff offer consultations for higher education colleagues that are outside the University of Michigan to advance intergroup relations education across the country. Consultations typically involve on-site or virtual workshops tailored to the specific needs and goals of the host institution.

In AY 2021-22, we completed five consultations and our clients included Skidmore College, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Vanderbilt University. In AY 2022-23, we completed two consultations at the University of Vermont and 1 at Skidmore. Co-director Donna Rich Kaplowitz also joined an additional special consultation as part of an external review at Skidmore.

IGR Insights handouts We reviewed and revised a number of our signature “IGR Insights” handouts this year to align with our current practices in dialogue, facilitation, and intergroup relations education.

Student colleagues IGR is proud of our 35 students who work to educate their peers and others on campus. Student colleagues work in the following areas: CommonGround workshop facilitators, CommonGround Programming Team, IGR researchers, IGR Friends (Recruitment Team), Student Experience Team, office assistants, and graduate student instructors.

Looking forward In the year ahead, we look forward to continued growth and impact on campus and around the country.

Organizationally, we’ll take a fresh look at our “Areas of IGR” framework to better align with our philosophy and practice.
