Philanthropy at CSG
I am delighted to present to you the Annual Report for Columbus School for Girls for the 2023-2024 academic year. There was so much to celebrate together in this 125th anniversary year at CSG! Reflecting on the visionary leadership of our founders, Mary Bole Scott and Florence Kelley, who established CSG in 1898, we honor the enduring legacy they have left us.
Year after year, so many in our community come together to sustain us in our mission of empowering girls to explore their unique potential as learners and leaders. This Annual Report is one way in which we say thank you. Whether you’re a member of the Leadership Giving Society or you participated in one of our alumnae or parent participation challenges or you stepped up during our “mission moment” at our reimagined Jubilee celebration, your philanthropic contributions are crucial in providing support for CSG’s daily operations.
The term “philanthropy” originates from the Greek words “philos” (love) and “anthropos” (humanity). Philanthropy is a powerful force for good that transforms communities and societies. Your philanthropic support is testament to your belief in a CSG education – not only in shaping individual lives but also in reshaping our society and even our world.
Your involvement, generosity, and commitment to our shared vision have been instrumental in enriching the educational experience of our students and strengthening the bonds of our school community. Together, we will continue to inspire excellence, foster innovation, and cultivate lifelong learners who are prepared to make meaningful contributions to the world.

Our Philanthropic Priorities
Philanthropy fuels almost everything at CSG. Below are a few of our main fundraising priorities and ways our community members make CSG a philanthropic priority.
Tuition Assistance
Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is just that … an annual need! Columbus School for Girls, like other independent schools across the country, is built on philanthropy. Annual Fund support lays a strong foundation built upon generations of giving and ensures independence from public dollars and influence.
You can see why the Annual Fund is our number one giving priority. It represents approximately 10% of our annual operating budget. To fulfill this need, CSG looks to the entire community, including parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, grandparents, parents of alumnae, companies, and friends of the school, to come together and raise these essential funds for our students and school.
More than 125 years after Columbus School for Girls was founded in 1898, our commitment to seeing girls’ voices amplified and included in the local and national conversations remains the same. This commitment is matched by our goal to make sure that every girl who can thrive at CSG has the access and opportunity to do so. Our students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. CSG provides tuition assistance to approximately 40% of our families. Two main ways we grow this assistance is through Scholarship Walk and taking part in the Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) program.
Planned Giving
Donor Listing
Columbus School for Girls views donor recognition as an extension of our belief in the power of community investment. Publicly celebrating donors demonstrates that philanthropy is a shared community value. This donor listing recognizes members of the CSG community for their generous gifts and support during the past giving year, July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. Thank you for your commitment to our students and school.

These individuals provide guidance, input, and philanthropic support to ensure that CSG continues to be the leader in girls’ education.

Endowment
By investing in our endowment, we safeguard the long-term strength of our school, allowing CSG to continue on in perpetuity and ensuring that countless generations of girls will have an incredible, unparalleled academic experience. Each year, CSG’s program is supported by the income earned from our endowment and the school uses those funds to develop world-class programs, provide tuition assistance, recruit and retain preeminent teachers, and ensure security and stability for CSG’s future.
Creating an endowed fund at CSG is another way donors can create a sustained legacy. These named funds begin at $30,000.
Planned gifts are a meaningful way donors help CSG prepare for the future. Planned gifts are often made through various financial instruments, such as wills, trusts, life insurance policies, charitable gift annuities, or charitable remainder trusts. These gifts allow individuals to leave a lasting legacy and provide ongoing support to organizations or causes they care about, even after their lifetime. We honor individuals who make a planned gift by inviting them to participate in the Golden Unicorn Society.
There’s no shortage of ways to make CSG a philanthropic priority including stock transfers, in-kind gifts, and matching gifts through employers and doing so makes an immediate and lasting impact on the education of the next generation of bright young women.

Why I Give
“Choosing CSG for our daughter is something we are grateful to be able to provide for her. CSG’s focus on helping us nurture her unique potential is evident to us as we have seen her grow these past few years. We are inspired to make a gift because we know the quality of faculty, staff, and mission-driven programming would not be possible with our tuition alone.”
–Jill & Joe Apgar P’37
“Being led down the hallway by a student host, passing the PYC students chattering away during their family-style lunch, just knew that my daughter could blossom at CSG beyond my wildest dreams. Not only is my daughter being held, seen, challenged, and celebrated, but as a parent, my education is continuing as well. She regularly brings home fun and fresh strategies and insights -sprinkling them into dinner conversations or car rides -- that help our whole family grow.”
–Colleen Carow P’35
“We have watched our daughter develop the confidence that will serve her throughout her academic career and beyond. We feel a deep sense of gratitude, understanding that she is establishing the foundation for a lifelong love of learning and developing the skills for building lasting relationships.”
–Clare Willoughby Ceballos ’95 P’31
“The faculty at CSG do a fabulous job of meeting students where they are to provide support or challenge the student based on their individual need. I look at each of my daughters who differ academically, socially and have different extracurricular interests. CSG consistently sees and meets their individual needs.”
–Gina Olsen P’30’32’37
“The gifts CSG gave me ranged from academic preparedness, confidence, the ability to work with different groups of people, and leadership skills I have and continue to use throughout my life.”
–Krissy Rose-Anderson Fenner ’97
“We have watched (at times with some anxiety) while our daughter maneuvered a completely different world at a large out-of-state school, not knowing a single person. We truly believe that the skills she gained during her time at CSG set her up for academic and social success in college. Our daughter knows who she is and has the confidence to express herself and her academic needs at a large academic institution. We credit CSG with the ability to look at the young woman she was and give her the academic and social preparedness to allow for success upon graduation.”
–Heidi Ruben Kleinman ’91 P’23’25

Donor Spotlight
Q&A with Julia Hanna P’34
Can you share a memorable moment or experience at CSG?
Reimagined Jubilee in April 2024 was incredibly meaningful to celebrate the history, vision and tradition of CSG and the enduring commitment to empowering girls and women to learn and lead. The anniversary underscored the direct connection today’s CSG families have with past and future generations.
What inspired you to become involved as a donor?
My daughter, Harper, inspires me every day! As I see her learning, thriving and blossoming at CSG, I want to help ensure the school has the resources for all students, present and future, to discover their potential.
Are there any specific programs or initiatives that you are particularly passionate about supporting?
I care about providing support that has broad and longlasting impact, not only for my daughter’s class but also across the whole school population. My focus includes school facilities, as well as initiatives on belonging, diversity and inclusiveness.
What motivates you to continue giving to CSG?
My motivation is my daughter and the legacy our family is building at CSG. I believe that along with the privilege of a CSG education comes the responsibility for actively supporting school activities and initiatives. Being a donor is one way to give, but time and skill are valuable, too.
What advice would you give to others who are considering becoming donors or getting involved in philanthropy?
Everyone has something to offer, whether it’s time, expertise, or financial support. By getting involved, we’re demonstrating to our daughters what it means to be a responsible member of a community. Start by talking with CSG to determine what kind of involvement is right for you.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your experiences as a donor or your involvement with CSG?
Just as our daughters are building life-long friendships, relationships and networks, so is our CSG parent community. Through the common bond of our daughters, I’ve met kind, capable, helpful –and fun! – people who are now an important part of our family’s lives.
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
“By getting involved, we’re demonstrating to our daughters what it means to be a responsible member of a community. Start by talking with CSG to determine what kind of involvement is right for you.”
Endowed funds ensure a strong foundation for our school, establishing a permanent source of income that will benefit future generations of CSG girls. The income generated from our endowment enhances educational programming and offers substantial support for our students and faculty. Donors can augment CSG’s current endowment or establish a new fund for specific purposes. For more information, please contact Chief Development Officer Amy Borntrager at aborntrager@columbusschoolforgirls.org or 614-252-0781.
Beth Crane ’69 and Richard McKee recently endowed the Program for Young Children (PYC) Director position. Beth has a heart for early childhood education, having taught in the PYC for 23 years.
“We are honored to support CSG, especially the PYC, recognizing the crucial role early childhood education plays in shaping future learning and overall well-being. The PYC fosters social-emotional skills and lays a foundation for academic excellence, helping students grow into successful, lifelong learners.” Beth said.
In addition to being a graduate herself, Beth is the parent of a CSG alumna and the daughter and granddaughter of CSG graduates. She also has had a sibling, nieces, and other relatives attend the school. Beth and Richard’s granddaughter is currently a student in the PYC. Because of this family legacy, they feel strongly about the impact the school has had on women in the community.
Beth’s long-time dedication to CSG has stemmed from her passion for women’s education and her warm memories of attending the 125-year-old school.
“My experiences with CSG were always so positive that I wanted to share it with other people,” she said.
Beth and Richard’s endowment provides CSG with the flexibility to continue to offer the most “magical” early childhood education, with a basis in Reggio Emilia methodology, to our youngest learners in the Program for Young Children.
As a way to commemorate their 50th reunion, members of the class of 1967 created the College Access Fund to support CSG students on their journey to the college of their choice.
They realized that a growing population of CSG students are receiving tuition assistance, and there might be a gap for some families in their ability to pay for things like test fees, SAT/ACT tutoring and prep, and even some application fees. The fund began as a $10,000 reunion gift from the class, and last fall, a small group of dedicated classmates, Wendy Lazarus ’67, Catherine Sirak Bardsley ’67 Carol Benua Major ’67 and Kitty Mills Anderson ’67, began fundraising with the goal of one day endowing a fund at CSG and just this spring, they achieved their goal!
The College Access Fund, having surpassed the $30,000 required to endow a fund at CSG, will exist in perpetuity for students to utilize in making the college of their dreams a reality.
