REPORT 2021-2022
ANNUAL

FROM THE CHAIR

In 2022, Columbia saw a shift in leadership at the local level with several new faces including Daniel Rickenmann as Mayor of Columbia and Overture Walker as Chairman of Richland County Council. With new leadership comes new ideas and the Chamber looks forward to collaborating with our local elected officials to bring forth new business friendly initiatives.

We have already seen progress on this front with the City of Columbia, in partnership with the Chamber, implementing a six-step plan to help grow our business community. Working to ease burdens like on-site parking requirements and simplifying the business license application and renewal process helps to make Columbia a more attractive place for new and existing businesses to thrive.

And at the Chamber, we are doing our part to help business grow, as well. In 2022, we launched the Midlands Minority Business Accelerator program. MMBA’s mission is to help accelerate the development of high-potential minority business enterprises and strengthen and expand our regions minority entrepreneurial community. Our first year welcomed eight cohort members and is positioned to grow even larger with the class of 2023.

The year brought more excitement as annual events such as the Gala were able to return after the pandemic and Chamber Partners found many opportunities to gather through the monthly Issues Forums, Partner Engagement Events, Small Business Breakouts and Coffee with Carl.

At the Chamber, our focus continues to be on helping our Partners Connect, Engage, Impact and Transform. We connect by providing opportunities for growth through networking and education. We engage by sharing a vision for the future while attracting, retaining, and expanding business. We show impact by creating an environment for sustained prosperity and future success through public policy and advocacy. And we transform by enriching our community and building a world-class region.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your continued support of the Columbia Chamber and our business community.

The Columbia Chamber Diplomats are a group of knowledgeable volunteers who proudly serve as representatives of the Chamber throughout the community. The Diplomat program grew by leaps and bounds in FY 21/22 by CONNECTING with over 20 active Diplomats. The Diplomats also met in a different Partner location each month offering an opportunity to highlight the business location and had the opportunity to welcome guests. Diplomat meetings also offered the lunch sponsor an opportunity to speak as well as each meeting brought in a

special Business Spotlight Speaker. Overall, with 11 Diplomat meetings throughout the year, over 33 businesses were touched.

DID YOU KNOW?

This year, our Partner Development team CONNECTED with close to 40 new Partners to personally onboard each team member to better take advantage of their Partnership and all that it offers. All new Partners, or current Partners with new team members, are eligible for this complimentary service.

ANNUAL REPORT 2022

ENGAGE

2021-2022 showed an exponential amount of growth for our events program, expanding how we ENGAGE with the community, despite limitations presented by the COVID pandemic.

SPORTING CLAY

TOURNAMENT

The Columbia Chamber and the Cayce-West Columbia Chamber partnered together to host a sporting clay competition. This unique and entertaining annual fundraiser allowed participants to support the Chamber and ENGAGE with fellow Partners on a day out

on the range ... the shooting range! We also introduced a friendly competition with local police chiefs and sheriffs called the “Sheriff Shoot-Off”. Chief Bobby Dale with the Irmo Police Department holds the current reign for the sharpest shooter in town. The 2021 Sporting Clay Tournament sold out, offering a nice segway into our 3rd “Annual” event in 2022.

118TH GALA

The Chamber’s Annual Gala is our region’s premier business event to ENGAGE with attendees representing some of the area’s most influential corporate leaders, small business owners, young professionals,

8 COLUMBIACHAMBER

educators, elected officials, and more. As 2020-2021 brought many changes to our personal and professional lives, the Chamber felt it fitting to refresh the Annual Gala by changing venues, dress code and program format. The 2021 event was held at the Central Energy event space, which featured an openair concept that allowed guests to freely move between the indoor and outdoor spaces while mingling. The event was a socially-distanced sellout.

SNEAK PEEK: 2023 will celebrate our 120th Diamond Gala. With special surprises in store for this milestone occasion, you will want to mark your calendars now for October 5, 2023!

GOLF

The Columbia Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic is always one of the top Partner events of the year. This year, the 35th Annual Chamber Classic brought in more sponsors than ever before. The event sold out with maximum teams ENGAGING in friendly competition on two courses.

POWER IN HEELS

The Power in Heels event has become one of the top women’s empowerment events in the region. If you’re a professional woman building a career in the Midlands, this event offers an incredible opportunity to network and ENGAGE with influential local female leaders. In 2021, Power in Heels joined forces with the Leadership Columbia Alumni Association to combine the annual Power in Heels and Women in Leadership events into a single sold-out conference to deliver an exciting new experience for professional women.

SNEAK PEEK: 2023 Power in Heels will move to a new location at the Columbia Museum of Art.

ANNUAL REPORT 2022

COLUMBIA IMPACT AWARDS

The Columbia Impact Awards strive to spotlight the dedication of outstanding organizations and individuals that make the Columbia region a vibrant place to visit, live and do business. The 2022 CIA Awards were presented in a new, more accessible way. In lieu of an in-person event, the awards were presented individually through a series of virtual, interactive announcements allowing winners to ENGAGE with multiple online audiences.

SNEAK PEEK: Columbia Impact Awards will return to an in-person event in 2023.

RIBBON CUTTINGS

The Columbia Chamber hosted 28 Ribbon Cuttings this fiscal year. These events offer Partners a chance to ENGAGE and welcome new Partners to the Chamber. (Approximately two each month.)

MIDLANDS MINORITY BUSINESS ACCELERATOR

In January, the Midlands Minority Business (MMBA) Accelerator kicked off its inaugural year in 2022 with a cohort of eight dynamic businesses. Funded with a seed grant from Bank of America, the initiative was designed to advance economic inclusion across the state of South Carolina by helping to reduce the economic disparities experienced by minority-owned businesses. The initiative provides opportunities for economic growth and prosperity for high-potential minority owned firms. MMBA is a major economic development tool of the Columbia Chamber and is designed to TRANSFORM minority businesses by making them more competitive.

The Midlands Minority Business Accelerator is a program of the Columbia Chamber in partnership with the South Carolina Minority Business Accelerator. The South Carolina Minority Business Accelerator is a statewide initiative formed by Greenville Chamber, Charleston Metro Chamber and the Columbia Chamber.

During the 12-month MMBA Program Participants Learn: Business development strategies

— Strategic planning Financial management and analysis Human resources

— Accessing capital Securing corporate and government contracts

The Class of 2022 has undergone a stringent schedule of class days, coaching sessions and peer-to-peer as well as CEO mentoring sessions. Once graduated in December of 2022, each cohort member is expected to see a 30% increase in their business growth over the following three years.
