With its inspired use of Native American musical rhythms and African American spiritual influences, the beloved “New World Symphony” heralded a new dawn for 20thcentury American music and remains one of the most iconic compositions of all time. In a rare appearance not to be missed, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet lends his prodigious talents to Gershwin’s Concerto in F — featuring quick, pulsating first and third movements that represent the young, enthusiastic spirit of American life, and a bluesy middle section, evoking a sound as American as Broadway. Berlioz’s Roman Carnival is an exhilarating, nine-minute joyride, equal parts wild and mercurial, making it a fitting opener to usher in a season of symphonic bliss at Boettcher Concert Hall.

Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 Symphony No. 7 in E minor

Experience the unforgettable as your Colorado Symphony and Principal Conductor Peter Oundjian showcase iconic works by Rachmaninoff and Mahler. In 2023, Simon Trpčeski made it clear why he’s considered one of today’s most exciting pianists with his dazzling interpretation of the Paganini Variations; now, he returns to perform Rachmaninoff again — this time, as featured soloist on the stunning Second Piano Concerto. Combining glorious melody and swelling orchestration, it’s no secret why this is regarded as one of the best concertos ever written. Mahler’s Seventh Symphony stands out as one of the most provocative symphonic statements of the early 20th century. Radical and forward-looking, the Seventh is a triumphant journey from night to day. Utilizing unorthodox instruments with unusual techniques, Mahler creates a soundscape where the orchestra is heard like never before in a work that signaled the end of romanticism, a historic turning point that Mahler faces head-on, giving us a symphony that is as beautiful as it is novel.

Whether heard as an expression of yearning for human connection or a message being broadcast into the unknown, Contact is a thrilling work that will spark your imagination. The program concludes with Saint-Saëns’ career-defining Organ Symphony, brimming with virtuosic piano passages and brilliant orchestral writing that blends the orchestra and organ in a tapestry of unending sonic color. Featuring music of sheer, breathtaking magnificence, the symphony was rewritten before its premiere when conductor Hermann Levi, one of Bruckner’s longtime champions, looked at the manuscript and deemed the work impossible to perform. The revised version, while magnificent, omits or rewrites some of the most beautiful passages of the original, significantly changing the effect of the piece. In a premiere performance by an American orchestra, the Colorado Symphony performs a new version from scholar Paul Hawkshaw which seeks to restore the original intent of a work Bruckner himself called “the most significant...of my life.”

If Beethoven’s Fifth represents fate knocking at the door, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth is fate trying to get out. As intensely dramatic as any of his other major works, the Fifth portrays a triumphant struggle against fate and demonstrates why Tchaikovsky was one of the Romantic era’s finest composers. It is said Ravel saw the world through the eyes of a child, and his Mother Goose Suite is a perfect encapsulation of that perspective. Grieg’s Piano Concerto is an ideal vehicle for pianistic virtuosity featuring an array of colors and moods that will sparkle in the hands of pianist Stephen Hough.

Underneath the Sheen Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 “Pastorale”

Dreams of spring are in the air as your Colorado Symphony welcomes guest conductor Kristiina Poska to the podium, breathing new life into Beethoven’s “Pastorale” Symphony. Originally dubbed “recollections of life in the country”, the Sixth Symphony is a brilliant programmatic projection of nature and the composer’s ultimate homage to the great outdoors, brimming with gestures and textures that seem accessible to all the senses as it instantly transports you to the Viennese countryside. Julia Adolphe’s own homage to the living world, Underneath the Sheen, envisions the movement of light edging and shining through a canopy of leaves and branches as observed from the forest floor. Hear these odes to the wonders of nature alongside Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, so noted for its rhapsodic nature and technical challenges, which will flourish in the hands of the virtuosic Karen Gomyo.

FRI-SAT 7:30 ✤ SUN 1:00

Symphony No. 2 “Sinfonía india” Chichester Psalms Corridos Symphony No. 3

Celebrate the music of the Americas with two distinctly American works by Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland alongside a pair of pieces by Mexican composers Carlos Chávez and Salvador Contreras, all led by dynamic Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto. Few, if any, 20th-century musicians left as important and enduring a heritage for their native country as Carlos Chávez has in Mexico. “Sinfonía india” is emphatically in the composer’s Mexican style, with irregular and cross-rhythms, syncopations, and stunning instrumental colors contributing to a driving, folklike energy that will come alive under the baton of Maestro Prieto. Chichester Psalms is Bernstein’s most important sacred score, combining six Psalms set in Hebrew with a hint of West Side Story, showcasing the versatility and power of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Known as the “Dean of American Composers,” Copland’s Third Symphony stands between his abstract works and the more accessible ballet and film music, offering an emotional journey from the uneasy tranquility of the opening movement to the heroic optimism of the finale which incorporates elements of his famous Fanfare for the Common Man.

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 23 Symphony No. 11 in G minor, Op. 103 “The Year 1905”

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky — so highly regarded for his symphonic compositions — placed himself among the greats of the keyboard with the completion of his First Piano Concerto; filled with gorgeous lyrical melodies and unmistakable Romantic spirit. For many, it has become the standard against which all virtuosos must measure themselves, featuring iconic opening flourishes and a pyrotechnic-filled finale. Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero lends her dazzling technique and improvisatory nature to this cornerstone of the classical canon. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11, “The Year 1905”, references the First Russian Revolution, in which civilians revolted against Tsar Nicholas II, culminating in the uprising known as Bloody Sunday. Growing up in a country where democracy was a distant dream and any act of criticism of the leading party relentlessly punished, Shostakovich became a master of hidden truths, using his music as a sort of covert confessional. In his way, the 11th Symphony stands as a requiem for all innocent victims of war, violence, injustice, and arbitrariness.

Dances in the Canebrakes Concerto for Violin & Cello Symphony No 2 in D major, Op. 36

Celebrate rarely performed gems by two titanic icons: Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. Your Colorado Symphony’s own Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and Principal Cello Seoyoen Min grace the stage with the mesmerizing interplay of the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello. Brahms, who spent much of his life coping with societal expectations of being the next Beethoven, capped an illustrious career with this never-before-seen double concerto pairing which often features violin and cello in dovetailing running scale lines, creating the effect of a single string instrument with a five-octave range. Beethoven’s Second Symphony offers a glance at the past while looking ahead to the groundbreaking compositions to come that would usher in a new era of music. Set within the framework of Haydn’s classical orchestra, audiences will hear Beethoven’s new path taking shape, with subtle previews of the earth-shattering “Eroica” Symphony.

Ballade in A minor, Op. 33 Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14

Tchaikovsky — known for his lush, sweeping melodies for strings — surprisingly composed only one concerto for violin, but his lone installment overflows with a world of emotions. Principal Conductor Peter Oundjian and your Colorado Symphony are joined by acclaimed GRAMMY® Award-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich in his much-anticipated return to Denver as featured soloist on Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto — a piece initially considered so difficult to perform that the premiere was delayed after his first two soloists declined the invitation. Hadelich himself described the piece as one of the most exhausting concertos in the violin repertoire, both emotionally intense and physically demanding. Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique — a work epic in scale and ambition — requires tremendous forces and uses a recurrent melodic theme that ties the work together, surfacing in every scene of this epic and tragic journey. The composer’s self-destructive passions are on full display as he takes audiences through the gamut of human emotions, capping a season finale that is dramatic and stirring.
