You may have brought lunch, but the Lory Student Center food courts, located on the two floors below the Grand Ballroom, are open. Some may choose to wait to eat after the closing session (if you can hold on until 2 p.m.), but to keep the food court chaos to a minimum: Schools from A - L eat during Session 3 (11:20-12:05pm) Schools from M - Z eat during Session 4 (12:15-1:00pm)

9:30-10:15am 2022 Pulitzer Prize Winning Photojournalist Nick Oxford, Photojournalist Bear Gutierrez, Photojournalist PHOTO, GENERAL Ballroom BC Why Words Matter Jake Sherlock, CSU GENERAL Room 308-310 The words we choose to report the news do more than just communicate the news -- they can introduce bias, sexism, racism, ableism and more. In this workshop, we’ll examine how to use language effectively to communicate the news in an inclusive and thoughtful manner. This isn’t just for “writers” -- if you use the written word for video scripts, captions, graphics or other multimedia, this is important for you, too.

Covering Tragedy Ben Reed, Monarch HS GENERAL Room 300 The Monarch High School community was devastated by the Marshall Fire last winter.

Hundreds of students lost their homes, thousands of people were evacuated, and everyone in the school was changed forever by the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history. When students returned to school, the journalists of MoHi Media were faced with an impossible challenge.

How do we cover this event? This session will look at how they found strength to create meaning and capture history for their community.

New Tech for Video Storytelling Steve Weiss & Ryan Crist, CSU BROADCAST Room 304-306 Technology is constantly pushing the art of video storytelling forward. Find out what the latest tools are and how you can put them to work to engage your audience in your video productions.

Jess Hunziker, Castle View HS GENERAL Room 312 Participants will learn strategies for organizing coverage, developing and implementing production cycles, and a revision process that honors individuals while producing a professional product.

Participants will leave with tangible tools to get and stay organized for the coming year.

Storytelling for Journalists Kris Kodrich, CSU NEWS Room 322 Feature writers want to tell a news story with creativity and flair. This session will discuss the use of narrative writing and other literary tools while delivering important and interesting factual information. These techniques will help you engage the reader with your stories.

Next-Level Stories Matt Gohl, CSU NEWS, PHOTO, BROADCAST Ballroom A So you’re a storyteller. That’s great! But do you ever wonder if anyone actually sees or cares about your content? Well, you should. In this hands-on session, we will learn techniques to take your stories to the next level through cell phone video production techniques, podcasting from anywhere and getting your content in front of the right audience by asking the right questions and having a clear purpose in mind. Get ready to take your content to the next level.

Branding Your Verbal with Strong Themes Justin Daigle, Brighton HS YEARBOOK Room 324 Your theme copy establishes two things: the voice of your book and the story you are going to tell. Study strong examples and learn key methods that will help you on your way to powerful theme copy.

10:25-11:10am Beyond A-Roll/B-Roll Karla Shotts, Englewood HS BROADCAST Room 300 Do you prefer “Avengers” or “Iron Man”? These are different examples of storytelling. The first is a group coming together to save the world, the second is the story of one central character.

Weaving your broadcast story around one central character can give your audience the emotion of the event or activity.

How do you start? What does a central character story look like? We dive into it.

Improve Your Interviewing Skills Molly Bohannon, The Coloradoan GENERAL Room 324 Students can learn tips and tricks for interviewing people of all kinds, from experts to peers to those even younger than you. We’ll review key interviewing tactics, how to prepare for interviews and be prepared to ask follow-up questions, and how to be comfortable when you’re out of your comfort zone. We’ll also go over ways to find sources to interview.

Learn how to activate your super senses to tell the ultimate stories of the citizens of your school. You’ll leave with a renewed understanding of yourself and your audience and with ideas for storytelling-from the Have To’s through the Want To’s.

Leading with Love Editors, Castle View HS EDITORS Room 304-306 Editors from yearbook and newspaper staffs will share how they create community in the media classroom while establishing a culture of belonging and excellence. Participants will leave with “right now” ideas for improving the culture and work ethic of a staff.

You’ll learn more about the research and writing process, as well as the video shooting and editing systems to make stories visually compelling for air and streaming.

11:20-12:05pm Writing for Radio & Podcasts Alex Hager, KUNC NEWS, BROADCAST Ballroom D Audio journalism lets you tell stories like no other medium. Conversational writing and creative use of sound can help you grab a listener’s attention and keep it, whether you have four minutes for a radio story or an hour for a podcast. Alex Hager has been using audio to help people understand the environment through his reporting on the Colorado River basin and will be sharing tips and tricks to write for your own voice and keep listeners curious and engaged.

This class will focus on: 1) Why emphasizing fair and far-reaching coverage is important to your program. 2) How to gear up to tell the wider stories of your school. 3) How to plan for strong coverage, and 4) Tips for getting more students on a spread.

20 Tips for Every Photographer Gavin Weiskopf, Photo Editor, Castle View HS PHOTO Room 322 In this session, participants will hear from a yearbook director of photography and learn 20 ready-to-go tips for improving a publication’s photography.
