First Art Hop offers a taste of summer season

The third Thursday of each month, May through September, the galleries, restaurants and boutiques of historic downtown Monument stay open until 8 p.m. for a celebration featuring art openings, book signings, great food, live music and other special events.

Bella Casa featured art of Paul Adelgren, who graduated from Palmer Ridge High School last year, and patrons enjoyed wine and refreshments on patio for the first Art Hop of the year on Thursday, May 15.

Weather delays highway repairs Staff report Cold and snow delayed the start of needed road repairs that were scheduled to begin May 11 on Interstate 25. The repairs are underway and will continue at night through May 19. Crews will make every effort to wrap up work by

5:30 a.m.; however, some repairs may take additional time and work could extend to 7 a.m., if necessary.

Crews are also working to complete the third lane southbound between State Highway 105 and North Gate Boulevard. Drivers are urged to watch for trucks and equipment entering

This work is expected to be complete in mid-June.

Memorial Day schedule In observance of Memorial Day, work will be suspended following the day shift on May 23, and will resume with the day shift May 27.

Limited paving begins this month Drivers should be aware

that paving work is scheduled to begin this month and will continue throughout the summer. That work will be done at night to minimize traffic impacts, but drivers are reminded that there will be multiple lane closures and speed limits during nighttime paving operations will be reduced to 45 mph.

Warmer temperatures will allow more aggressive rotomilling and paving operations by mid-June, when nighttime temperatures should consistently be above 50 degrees — the minimum temperature required for asphalt paving.

Monument sets Memorial Day ceremony Staff report The town of Monument will host the annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 26 at the Monument Cemetery, 800 Beacon Lite Road.

The ceremony is to honor all military veterans especially those who have died and are buried in this cemetery.

The program for that day will include the reading of the names of 15 Civil War veterans and those veterans up to present day who are buried in this cemetery (please see list of names.)

The schedule: MC: Mayor Rafael Dominguez; honored speaker, Lt. Col. Ron Pitt; invocation by a military chaplain; flag presentation for the raising of the flag by

veterans; guard of honor by Boy and Girl Scouts from the Tri-Lakes area. Benediction by the Rev. Paul A. Johnson and prayer

by Sr. Naomi Rosenberger, OSB. The honor guard will consist of members of the Monument Police Department; Palmer Lake Police Dept. and Tri-Lakes Fire Department.

Music will be supplied by students of

School District 38 under the direction of Stephen Hock. The band will play the “StarSpangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” J.J. Kaelin will sing “In Flanders Field.”

The program will conclude with the playing of “Taps” and a 21 gun salute. The public is welcome to participate in this ceremony. For further information, contact Monument Town Hall at 719-481-2954.

Ward was one of only 10 teachers selected throughout Southern Colorado to receive the recognition that also included a $500 cash award.

Forgotten group working on railroads I looked at the 1910 Census for Rico, in Dolores County, the other day. All the regulars were there. Of course, there was Charles Engle on Garfield Street, and Peter Lofquist over on Commercial, and Charlie Johnson, Axel Carlson, C.L. Berry, Minnie Hill, and Annie Hoxie when they counted.

But down at the bottom of a list names I noticed something interesting — to me at least.

An almost forgotten group of 10 men, with Japanese surnames, 25- to 60-years old, and only an initial for first name, most of them described as living in “Railroad Yard.” For the “Race” column it listed “Japanese Male.”

“T. Taneguchi, S. Herano, T. Watanabe,T. Tado, J. Fukae, K. Hamazi, R. Ota, B. Kutsunai, M. Sai, and G. Fukumara.

According Daryl J. Maeda, in an essay for Enduring Communities, “Japanese Americans have a long and complex history in Colorado, and their story features struggles and perseverance, discrimina-

tion and tolerance.”

I wondered about that group and their stories.

“The earliest Japanese to arrive in Colorado probably did so between 1886 an 1888 and were mainly visitors and students,” wrote Maeda.

“They were followed shortly, however by the first large wave Japanese immigrants moving eastward from the Pacific Coast. The largest number of Japanese came to Colorado between 1903 and 1908 and worked as common laborers, railroad

workers, miners, farmhands, factory workers, and domestics. The influx boosted the Japanese population of the state from 48 in 1900 to 2,300 in 1910.”

Maeda says many Issei (first-generation Japanese immigrants) initially worked in Colorado on the railroad and in the coal mines.

“These early settlers entered an environment already structured by anti-Asian sentiments, evidenced when a mob ransacked and burned the Chinese section of Denver in 1880. The 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act barred the immigration of Chinese laborers to the U.S., and as the Chinese population of Colorado subsequently waned, the Japanese population grew. Like the Chinese before them, the Japanese who came to Colorado were scorned as the “yellow peril,” subjected to violence, and excluded from union membership. The Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post ran anti-Japanese stories and editorials beginning in 1901, and by 1908 the Colorado

State Federation of Labor had formed a Japanese and Korean Exclusion League,” writes Maeda.

According to historian Arthur A. Hansen, “Fortuitously, the Issei arrived in the U.S. as the Interior West region was experiencing what historian Eric Walz has described as “an economic boom fueled by railroad construction, coal and hard-rock mining, and agricultural development.”

Recruited by labor contractors, the Issei were a mobile workforce. As both individuals and gang laborers, they moved not only between different work opportunities on the Pacific Coast and the western interior sections of the U.S., but also between America and Japan and many other parts of the world in which Japanese workers filled a variety of employment needs.”

My endless odyssey with Nolan Ryan On May 15, 1973, I sat in the spare bedroom of my parents’ home in Redlands, California, and watched a baseball game on television between the California Angels and Kansas City Royals.

I was less than a month shy of my 10th birthday and a huge Angels fan. In particular, my hero above all other athletes was Nolan Ryan, who was traded to the Angels from the New York Mets following the 1971 season. That was when my man-love affair with Ryan began.

Ryan was on the mound that May 15 day against the Royals. Batter after batter came to the plate and did his best to make solid contact from his 105-plus mph — at least —fastball and devastating Ryan curve. Batter after batter returned to the Royals dugout a defeated man.

crazy with emotion. So did I. I couldn’t believe what I saw on TV and ran through the house telling everyone what had just taken place in Kansas City.

Ryan struck out 12 Royals batters that night. He walked three. Nobody kept pitch counts in those days, but it is likely Ryan threw around 150 pitches — which was normal for him.

There is an unconfirmed report that Ryan once threw 282 pitches in a game against the Minnesota Twins.

Many of you know that Ryan went on to throw six more no-hitters in his illustrious 27-year major league career.

Ryan recorded four of his no-hitters as a member of the Angels. No-hitter No. 2 occurred July 15, 1973 — two months to the day after his first — against the Detroit Tigers. He struck out 17 batters that day.

I watched that game on television with

my dad. We had a color TV in the living room, so my dad and I really ate it up.

Ryan threw his third no-hitter in 1974 on the last day of the season against the Twins. This game was in Anaheim, so it was not on television.

I listened to the game on my little transistor radio that I carried around with me nearly every day of the baseball season so that I could listen to Enberg call Angels games and Vin Scully call the Los Angeles Dodgers games.

Ryan threw no-hitter No. 4 on June 1, 1975, against the Baltimore Orioles. I had no idea that no-hitter occurred until after the fact. My family and I used to spend most of our summers camping at the Colorado River. We had a jet boat and skied Summers continues on Page

Down the old, old road In 1924, the state was looking at improving the dirt road from Pueblo to Denver. The railroads were too.

Back then, most roads followed the railroads. They crossed from one side to the other quite often. I have heard that at one time the road crossed over the tracks about 50 times between Denver and Pueblo. By 1924 some of these had been eliminated. The railroads were getting tired of hitting cars and wagons! What was the road like from Sedalia to Colorado Springs in 1924?

We start from Sedalia, mainly because of the number of crossings north of there.

The old road into town from the north is still there, and it goes through the town.

The old road then came over to the present road almost to Castle Rock. You can still drive part of the old road into Castle Rock.

The old road then went on to Tomah on the West side of the railroad. It went south to Larkspur, where it went east to the creek and followed it to Greenland. You can still see parts of it but mainly it is gone. From Greenland it followed the railroad, east of the tracks to Palmer Lake. This road can be seen in places too. From there to Monument it was where 105 is today. It went through Monument and south.

Today some of this is called “The Old Denver Road.” From Baptist Road it went through what is now the Air Force Academy west of where Interstate 25 is located and between the Academy Exit and Woodman Exit, about Mile Post 150, it went under the Santa Fe railroad and through the town of Breed.

Breed was a coal-mining town, and most of it was where the Woodman exit is located. It was gone by the late 1950s.

There was a town called Pike View where the Rockrimmon Exit is located, which was also a coal mining town. The old road to Colorado Springs went from Breed to

Pike View and into Colorado Springs on Cascade Avenue.

When the new road was built in the late 1920s it changed a lot of that. At north Colorado Springs at Breed it connected with north Nevada. All of this became US 85 and 87 in the 1930s.

It changed again in the 1950s when a modern four lane was built (but not yet I-25). The part on the Air Force Academy was moved east when it became I-25 in the early 1960s.

Starting in 1924, the highway department wanted to eliminate as many road, railroad, grade crossing as possible. There were several undercrossings — or bridges under railroads — built. Only one of them still exists as it was built. This one is on 105 at Monument going into Palmer Lake.

Originally there were two there, one Santa Fe the other Denver and Rio Grande. It is the Rio Grade’s that is still there.

It took five years to sort all of this out, and some of it even longer. The good thing was, when it was built it was done with paving, as the US 85-87 was laid out, financed by federal highway funds. If you look carefully, some of it is still visible between Littleton and Pueblo. Some of it is still being used as it was built! I bet you remember the concrete road between Palmer Lake and Larkspur since it was redone only a few years ago. That was the 1920s concrete you were driving on!

Black Forest AARP efforts make a difference Volunteers from Chapter 1100 of AARP in Black Forest recently volunteered to clean up a property on Holmes Road that had been devastated by last summer’s wildfire. They spent more than six hours working. The work included removing burnt trees, raking up pine needles and debris and planting trees.

Fifteen members from the Black Forest AARP Chapter responded to a recent need to plant trees and grass on acreage devastated by last summer’s Black Forest fire. The volunteer group furnished shovels and rakes and a large portion of their day to the project. The work they did should help prevent erosion and the reestablishment of the trees and native grasses for the future beautification of the Black Forest area. The volunteers were rewarded for their hard work with a lunch.

The motto of the Black Forest AARP Chapter 1100 is “to serve not to be served.” Individuals of all ages are welcome to join this group for lunch the second Wednesday of each month at the Black Forest Lutheran Church.

You have to remember that in those days there was no ESPN or satellite television with hundreds of stations. There were no cell phones, either.

I was bummed I missed Ryan’s fourth No-No, but happy none-the-less.

Ryan’s four no-hitters with the Angels came in an 86-game stretch. Amazing.

Ryan left the Angels as a free agent after the 1979 season. He signed a four-year deal with the Houston Astros. On Sept. 26, 1981, he threw no-hitter No. 5 against the Dodgers in Houston. I watched that game on television as Scully called the action.

Time marched on and so did I. In 1990, I landed a job with the Angels working in media relations. I got to meet all the major leaguers who came to town. Stars like George Brett, Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens and Cal Ripken. Managers like Frank Robinson, Tony LaRussa and Sparky Anderson.

And among those players I met was Lynn Nolan Ryan. He was eating an ice cream cone the first time I saw him in the clubhouse. He sat in his chair at his locker as I approached him and introduced myself. We chatted for a while and shook hands. I was on cloud nine.

I had seen him pitch in person dozens of times in Anaheim, Los Angeles and San

On June 11 of that year Ryan, now with the Texas Rangers, pitched no-hitter No. 6 against Oakland. I missed it because the Angels were at home that night and I was busy doing media relations work. I saw the news come across the Associated Press wire and passed it along to my boss, Tim Mead, who in turn made the announcement in the press box.

A year later, May 1, 1991, Ryan pitched his seventh no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays. I watched the game on ESPN. I could not believe my eyes that a 44-yearold Ryan had just accomplished the improbable yet again.

Ryan also won his 300th game in 1991.

Two years later he hurt his arm pitching against the Angels in Anaheim. I listened to that game on the radio. Ryan walked off the mound after the seventh inning of that Sept. 17 evening in obvious pain. He knew his career was over.

Five days later he made his final start for the Rangers in Arlington, Texas. He threw 29 pitches, allowing five earned runs. He never recorded an out.

I named my son after Ryan when he was born in 1994. His name is Garrison Ryan Summers. No doubt hundreds, if not thousands of people, have also named their children after Ryan.

It’s hard to believe 41 years have passed since that first Ryan no-hitter. What a blessing it was to grow up with him as my sports hero.

FINE TIME FOR WINE New winery features tasting room, cafe and gift shop For the Tribune Colorado’s newest winery, Catriona Cellars, that will feature a tasting room, café and gift shop, will officially open its doors on May 24 at 11 a.m. at 243 Washington St. in Monument.

The winery, which has been under construction for the past nine months, will offer seven inaugural red and white wine blends at its tasting bar, crafted by winemaker Woody Woodworth. One of those, Red Diva, Catriona’s flagship blend of Cabernet, Syrah and Zinfandel, offers hues of raspberry and cherry.

The winery has also recently appointed Patricia McClelland as executive chef. McClelland comes to the winery with more than 30 years of experience in the food science and fine dining industries, and will be overseeing The Café at Catriona, a “small plates” eatery located on the grounds of the new winery.

“We’re thrilled to have Chef McClelland as our new executive chef at Catriona Cellars,” said co-owner Catherine Woodworth. “We are tremendously excited to invite our patrons and guests to enjoy her inventive, seasonal dishes and sample the small plates menu she has created to pair with our wines.”

McClelland was co-owner of The Bella Panini in Palmer Lake and has also contributed to southern Colorado dining establishments including The Cheyenne Mountain Conference Resort and to Charo’s Restaurant in Kauai, Hawaii. McClelland enjoys the opportunity to include produce, meats and cheeses from the immediate region and often maintains a kitchen garden to provide fresh vegetables and herbs for the cuisine she designs for the dining establishments of which she has been a strong contributor.

“Wine is meant to be paired with fresh, delicious and seasonal foods,” McClelland said. “And if I can bring them from local sources, all the better. My goal is to offer a balance of salty, savory, spicy and sweet flavors that will surprise and delight your palate. I can’t wait for our doors to open!”

DCC students showcase creativity and team work Team to compete at Destination ImagiNation Global Finals

By Lisa Collacott Students from two Academy School District 20 schools will show how well they solve problems creatively and work together as teams at an international competition in Tennessee.

Called the “world’s largest celebration of creativity,” the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals will host more than 8,000 students from around the world and will take place through May 24 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.

Kristi Hullings, International Baccalaureate primary years coordinator at Discovery Canyon Campus, is the team manager for the DCC elementary team as well as a team from Liberty High School.

Destination ImagiNation started in 1982. According to the website, destinationimagination.org, DI teaches the creative process from imagination to innovation. The goal is to help teams be creative in all aspects of their lives. In the creative process students use science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the arts and service learning. Students compete in challenges. The challenges for this year include technical, scientific, structural, fine arts, improvisational and service learning.

The DCC team is comprised of six students who will compete in the scientific challenge.

“This year the challenge was to pick an extreme environment that exists in the world and create a story about how at least one character survives the extreme environment due to using extreme gear,” Hullings said.

Hullings said the extreme environment

should be somewhere that humans could typically not survive. The students chose the inside of a computer. She said the stage set looks like motherboard and the students become characters that are different parts of the computer.

“The program helps the kids develop confidence. They become team players.

They become more outgoing and the best thing is they’re not afraid of any challenge,” Hullings said. “They sort of lose the vocabulary ‘that’s impossible’ and they don’t say things like ‘can’t’. Which to me is valuable because we don’t know as a society what challenges we’re going to face in the future so it’s great to know we have these kids growing up believing in themselves and they can tackle any challenge. And being able to work as a team is so important.”

She said adults cannot give input into the team’s challenge. Students have to come up with the materials they are going to use, the characters and the story line.

This is the first time a DCC team has qualified for the global competition. Last year a team from the school made it all the way to the state competition. The Liberty team qualified for the global competition last year but didn’t attend because they had a senior on their team and the competition dates conflicted with graduation.

Other D-20 schools have attended in the past. Hullings attended in 2006 with a team from South Carolina where she was teaching at the time.

Hullings said the students will stay in the dormitory on campus and will get to participate in the opening and closing ceremonies. Like the Olympics students will parade in the stadium by country, wear glow-in-the-dark gloves and hats and will sit with their country or state. At the closing ceremony, students mingle with each other and trade pins from their countries and states.

The Solid Muldoon, of Ouray, wasn’t as durable as its name suggested, surviving as a weekly newspaper only until 1892, but its spirit will likely live on forever. The name crops up again and again in the west – recently, for example, as one of the ski runs for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics – but it had its Day. The Solid Muldoon didn’t pull its punches. Local historian, Duane A. Smith, records that Col. David Day, a Medal of Honor winner for heroism at Vicksburg, Miss., “had the distinction of having 42 libel suits pending at the same time [in 1900] for his raw and bitter articles in The Solid Muldoon newspaper of Ouray and Durango.” Day was known nationwide for his caustic wit, honesty, and bitter sarcasm. His fame even spread to England, where Queen Victoria was said to have read the Muldoon for many years.

But how did the paper get its unusual name?

The original Solid Muldoon was the name given to a mysterious “prehistoric human body” dug up near Beulah, Colo., in 1877. It is a combined organization of the United States and Canada that provides aerospace warning, air sovereignty, and defense for North America, The headquarters for NORAD and the NORAD/USNORTHCOM command center are located at Peterson Air Force Base. Nearby Cheyenne Mountain nuclear bunker has the Alternative Command Center.

The North American Air (later Aerospace) Defense Agreement, which brought the U.S. and Canada together in joint-air defense, is an interesting story of how two separate countries used shared geography to help each other and themselves.

NORAD grew out of the two countries’ air force. They worked together to come up with a plan for North America’s air defense.

A Military Study Group Report was created in 1956 and was approved by the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and Canadian Chiefs of Staff, and the American Government. The Canadian Government, on the other hand, took longer because of an election on the horizon in 1957.

September 1957. But the idea for such an alliance was around as early as the 1940s.

Everything was made official with the signing of the NORAD Agreement on May 12, 1958. The main headquarters were located at ENT Air Force Base in downtown Colorado Springs. Today, the United States Olympic Training Center is on the land.

Defense sharing between Canada and the U.S. dates back to World War I with an agreement that allowed munitions sharing. The first official agreement was the 1940 Ogdensburg Declaration, followed by the Hyde Park Agreement in April 1941.

Despite these and other committees, there was less interest in defense sharing after World War II. In 1947 it became obvious again when the Soviet Union, led by Josef Stalin, forced the U.S. and Canada to come up with the Joint Industrial Mobilization Committee. In 1949 both govern-

Not all of Canada recognized the need for combined air defense right away.

Canada did not always hold its air defense as high as other countries. Canada came around, especially after the hydrogen bomb was tested by the Soviet Union.

NORAD had different meanings to different people. Some thought of it as the building, some thought of it as a big bunker inside Cheyenne Mountain (I am in that camp) and others still think of it as a symbol of North America.

NORAD thrived during the Cold War as the arms race heated up.

By 1968, 14 percent of NORAD personnel were Canadian. They were involved in many aspects, including in NORAD Headquarters - which became active in 1966 at Cheyenne Mountain.

By the 1960s and into the 1970s - even though the Cold War was in full force NORAD’s value was waning. The main threat to the continent became ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) instead of bombers. Because of this change, NORAD in the 1970s had become more of an alert system then an actual defense one.

The number of interceptors in NORAD dropped from 3,000 (200 Canadian) in 1960 to 300 (36 Canadian) by the end of

the 1970s.

Montgomery, Spalding among Tri-Lakes area athletes to shine at state track meet Palmer Ridge boys, TCA boys and girls, win team championships

Lewis-Palmer junior speedster Nicole Montgomery again proved why she among the top sprinters in the nation by winning the Class 4A 200-and-400-meter races.

Discovery Canyon senior Jackson Spalding repeated as the 4A boys discus and shot put champion, which should make his future coaches at the Air Force Academy very happy.

The Palmer Ridge boys were the oddson favorite to win the 4A team title and did not disappoint.

And The Classical Academy boys and girls teams ended their impressive run at the 3A level with two more state titles. Titans senior Hannah Carr repeated as the state champion in the shot put and discus.

Montgomery set a meet record in the 400 with a time of 54.23 seconds as a sophomore. So when she clocked in at 53.44 seconds this year, stat keepers had to quickly update their record books.

Montgomery won the 200 with a time of 24.02.

Montgomery, who is also a star volleyball player for the school, said she likely will pursue a Division I scholarship if she plays just one sport; or a D-II scholarship if she decides to play two sports.

Spalding’s comeback from major knee surgery was a story of triumph. He injured his knee during a football season.

He was able to practice the shot put and discus a little bit during the winter and hit it hard in the spring.

His shot put throw of 58 feet, 9 inches easily outdistanced Sand Creek’s Nathan Dunivan (55-1) for the second consecutive year.

“I knew I was going to come back and give it all I could,” Spalding said. “It ended up being more than enough.”

“I’m super impressed,” Mitchell said. “I did not expect his recovery to happen as fast as it did.”

Palmer Ridge’s boys had been at the top of the rankings all season. But to each Bears runner and coach, it had to be proven at the state meet that they were the best.

Palmer Ridge scored 103 points as a team, easily outscoring second-place Broomfield (65).

Interestingly, the Bears did not have a single individual winner.

They won the 1600 relay with a 4A record-time of 3:15.51, more than two seconds better than the previous mark. They also won the 800 relay.

The Titans girls won their eighth 3A crown in nine years with a 28.5-point bulge over its nearest competitor. TCA’s boys won their fifth team title in six years, scoring a 103-90 victory over Coal Ridge.

TCA will no longer be a thorn in the side of its 3A counterparts. Its enrollment has surpassed the threshold for a 3A school.

The Titans will move up to 4A for the next two-year cycle, where they will join the Metro League for all sports except football.

Carr saved her best for last, breaking the 3A state-meet record in the discus. The mark that had stood since 1998.

Baseball team narrowly misses advancing to state semifinals Bears finish their season at 16-8

Palmer Ridge’s run at a Class 4A baseball title ended with a wild 17-15 loss to Longmont at All-State Park in Lakewood on May 17.

With a trip to the state semifinals on the line, Palmer Ridge (16-8) led 13-8 after four innings. The Bears still clung to a 1312 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

That was when Longmont scored five runs to take a 17-13 lead.

But the Bears would not go down without a fight. They strung together three hits and a run-scoring sacrifice in the bottom of the seventh to tally two runs.

Palmer Ridge actually trailed 5-0 early, but scored three times in the second, four times in the third and six times in the fourth to go ahead 13-8. The Bears’ fourth was highlight by a Jake Grubesic RBI-double, and a two-run single by Jack Stamper.

Bears’ starting pitcher Kurt Larson had a good day at the plate, going 3 for 5 with two doubles.

The Bears opened the double-elimina-

tion bracket on May 16 with a 4-1 victory over Evergreen.

Grubesic threw a six-hit complete game to lead the Bears.

There were plenty of scouts in the stands to watch opposing pitcher Brock Burke, who is committed to Oregon. The radar guns were pointed at Burke’s every pitch through the first three innings.

The Bears batters weren’t intimated, scoring three runs on four hits and four walks through three frames.

Grubesic was on his game from the beginning, needing just 73 pitches to go the distance. He never faced more than four batters in an inning until the seventh. That was when the Cougars hit back-to-back singles with two outs. But Grubesic forced a pop up to end the threat and the game.

The Bears played a second game on May 16, losing to Niwot, 5-4.

Palmer Ridge overcame a 4-1 deficit to tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.

Cole Hurford drove in a run and scored a run in the inning.

The game ended in the bottom of the seventh on a controversial call when the umpires convened and overturned an out that allowed Niwot to win.

The umpires ruled that Niwot base runner Danny Caruso was obstructed trying to return to third while caught in a rundown.

Lewis-Palmer and Discovery Canyon swim strong at state meets L-P finishes fourth in 5A, while DCC has fourth-place finish in 4A

dsummers@colorado communitymedia.com In five short years the Discovery Canyon boys’ swimming team has gone a start-up group to a state-contender at the Class 4A level.

The Thunder just needs to figure out a way to slow down Air Academy, which won its third consecutive state title last weekend.

Discovery Canyon finished fourth at the meet, which took place at Edora Pool Ice Center in Fort Collins.

The Thunder’s neighbor to the north, Lewis-Palmer, finished fourth at the 5A state meet at Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center in Thornton.

“We were seeded fourth, so I guess it turned out the way it was supposed to,” said Lewis-Palmer coach Alana Arata.

“The difference between the 5A meet and the 4A meet is so big. You have to be on it every time. You have to hit every time.

One slip up can cost you.”

Arata’s club finished well back of meet champ Regis Jesuit, which scored a whopping 410 points. Next were Cheery Creek (190), Fairview (179) and Lewis-Palmer (156).

The Rangers set several school and Pikes Peak area records. Senior Hunter Bains finished third in the 50 yard freestyle relay with an all-American time of 20.64 seconds. He swam a 20.50 in prelims, which set an area record.

Bains finished second in the 100 free with an all-American time of 45.41. He also swam anchor on the Rangers’ 200 freestyle relay team that finished fourth and set an area record in the process with a time of 1:25.73. Bains’ split of 20 seconds was the fastest in area history.

“It’s going to be tough to replace Hunter next year,” Arata said. “Losing Hunter is like losing Ryan (Arata). You don’t replace that.”

Ryan Arata, Alan’s son, is now swimming for Stanford.

Senior Zach Mullins was Lewis-Palmer’s top diver. He finished sixth with 432.85 points.

In the finals, Keller and Liu were part of the Thunder’s second-place finish in the 200 freestyle medley relay. Also on the team were Jonathan Donehower and Blake Lawrie.

Lawrie finished third in the 50 free

(21.41) and fourth in 100 free (47.19). Keller finished third in the 100 butterfly (50.77), while Liu was third in the 100 back (53.91).

The Thunder finished second in the 400 free relay (Keller, Austin Ward, Donehower and Lawrie).

The Thunder scored 196 points as a team. Air Academy won with 280.

Soccer season ends for Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge girls’ teams Both squads lost in the Class 4A state quarterfinals

dsummers@colorado communitymedia.com The Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge girls’ soccer seasons ended in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state playoffs on May 14.

Lewis-Palmer (11-4-3), the No. 10 seed, lost to No. 2 Broomfield, 3-1, at Broomfield.

Rangers senior Stacie Loidolt, playing in her first game of the season after leg sur-

gery, scored a goal in the 61st minute to tie the score at 1-1.

But the Eagles responded with a controversial goal two minutes later, and added another in 68th minute to put the Rangers in a deep hole.

Broomfield second goal came when a rush to the net created a mess of bodies in the box. Lewis-Palmer goalkeeper Haley Arsenault got her hands on the first two chances in the scrum, but Hailey Mazzola found the back of the net on the Eagles’ third chance.

dsummers@colorado communitymedia.com Tri-Lakes area sports teams and individual athletes have experienced an abundance of success this spring season, but there may be no better story than the incredible postseason run by The Classical Academy girls’ soccer team.

The Titans (11-6-1) the No. 8 seeded team in the tournament - stamped their ticket for a return trip to the Class 3A state finals with an impressive 1-0 victory over No. 13 Kent Denver (11-6-1) on May 17.

Freshman sensation Hannah Burgo scored the game’s only goal seven minutes into the second half. It was Burgo’s teamleading 21st goal of the season.

The victory set up a championship tilt with No. 2 Colorado Academy (15-4) May 20 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Results of that game were not available at press time.

Freshman Ashlynn Register did a splendid job in goal again for the Titans for the fourth consecutive playoff game. She took over the starting job four days before the postseason began when starting keeper Sarah Buzzetta suffered an eye injury during practice.

“We’re playing for something bigger than ourselves,” said TCA senior Bonnie Buzzetta, Sarah’s older sister. “We wanted to step in the postseason and play for her.”

TCA’s remarkable run to the title game is a bit of a shock. TCA lost 14 players from last year’s team that lost in the state championship game. The Titans began this season with a 1-5 record. They have reeled

off 10 wins and a tie in their last 12 matches.

This is TCA’s last year at the 3A level. It joins the 4A Metro League this fall.

The Titans advanced to the semis with a 3-2 victory over No. 1 Jefferson Academy.

The game was played in Broomfield, the site of the first match the two squads played earlier in the season when Jefferson Academy (15-3) won 5-3. The Titans led 3-1 in that game.

In the rematch, TCA got second-half goals from Mikayla Murphy and Burgo.

The dynamic duo scored 48 seconds apart early in the second half to put the Titans ahead 2-1.

A little over five minutes later, Murphy scored again off of a rebound, which turned out to be the eventual game-winner.

With about 25 minutes remaining in the game, Dami Murdock scored from inside the box after Tafoya dribbled through several defenders to earn the assist.

Palmer Ridge was attempting to advance to the semifinals for a fourth consecutive year.

The Bears were without the services of their top defender, Ali Meyer, who missed the game due to a knee injury she suffered earlier in the playoffs.

Finding the perfect gift for a dear friend who’s turning 50 can prove difficult, but that’s not the case for one group.

The kind-hearted caretakers known as the Friends of Castlewood Canyon State Park knew just how to mark the milestone: expansion. The volunteer group has its eye on a 15-acre parcel of land adjacent to the park upon which sits the Kleinert homestead, a ranch built in 1887 along the banks of the lake that burst through the canyon’s dam nearly five decades later.

The Friends of Castlewood Canyon have committed to raising $25,000 toward the purchase and are busy organizing a number of events to raise money for the “birthday gift,” said Ron Claussen, president of the group. The events include a 10K trail run in September and a “yoga in the park” series that starts in June.

The Friends raised $6,000 in the first month of the fundraising campaign. It needs another $19,000 for the Kleinert property.

While Castlewood Canyon officially became a state park in 1964, its history began three years earlier when a man purported to be the grandson of “The Unsinkable”

Claussen enthusiastically talks about the unique topography, varied flora and story-telling geological formations that define Castlewood Canyon, sprinkling in the occasional legend (it is said that bigfoot has been spotted in those parts). He readily admits that historical gaps are often filled with educated conjecture by the 50plus volunteers who help out at the park.
