In a June 21 meeting, the Parker Town Council unanimously approved an update to their ordinance related to prairie dog management. The two amendments to the ordinance don’t drastically change the way the town deals with the animals, but they provide clarity for when humane extermination can occur and a deadline extension for those developers who wish to relocate prairie dogs. During the meeting, several residents spoke to the council during public comment, thanking the council for the updates but asking them to go one step further. “Tonight’s recommendation to amend certain areas of the prairie dog ordinance is a good step forward for developers, the town and wildlife activists,” Parker resident Linda Wilson said. “However, in my opinion, to bring the ordinance full circle and to save prairie dog lives, you need to open up more land in Parker and Douglas County.” The first of the two amendments gives a 180-day extension for an applicant who wishes to attempt relocation and has found a relocation site “as a way of providing an incentive for relocation,” said SEE PRAIRIE DOGS, P5
