Colorado primary messaging drives wave of complaints BY SANDRA FISH THE COLORADO SUN

Mailers, TV ads and other campaign missives were flying in Colorado as the June

28 primary nears, eliciting a wave of campaign finance complaints and raising ethical questions about some of the political maneuvering. Democrats are behind

some of the ads promoting more conservative Republican candidates for U.S. Senate, Colorado governor and the 8th Congressional District — believing those

candidates will be easier to beat in the general election. But the strategy has been criticized by some Democrats, who warn that it could backfire by raising the

Emerald ash borers found in Thornton BY LUKE ZARZECKI LZARZECKI@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The emerald ash borer has made its way to Thornton, according to city officials. Thornton Parks, Golf and Forestry Superintendent Paul Burkholder said experts from Colorado State University Extension positively identified the insect in Park Village Park. This is the first time it’s been found in Thornton. “It’s probably been here for so many years,” he said. “Trees don’t show infection until several years prior to the visibile dieback.” According to the Colorado State Forest Service, the emerald ash borer is an insect that has killed tens of milions of ash trees in North America. As a non-native insect, it lacks predators to keep it in check. It is considered the most destructive tree insect ever in Canada and the United States. The Colorado State Forest Service’s website states the emerald ash borer has been confirmed in unincorporated Larimer County and in the cities of Boulder, Gunbarrel, Longmont, Lafayette, Lyons, Superior, Broomfield, Westminster, Erie and Arvada. And now, add Thornton to that list. The emerald ash borer only infects ash trees, and three in Park Village Park were identified as infected. Although the emerald ash borer has only been identified in that park, Burkholder suspects it has made its way to other places around Thornton due to the park’s central location. SEE BORER, P4

Westminster seeks ideas from residents for using grants BY LUKE ZARZECKI LZARZECKI@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Westminster city officials said they need input from residents regarding how to use more than $500,000 in federal Community Development Block grants due to the city. City staff told the Westminster City Council at its June 20 study session that there is already a consolidated plan for how to use the grant money but it is not set in stone. Staff said they have begun the 30-day community review and input process for the 2022 annual action plan. “It is a draft plan,” said Housing Coordinator Molly Tayer. “If we learn more as we go through the coming 30 days, yes, there is wiggle room (to adjust it).” Currently, the plan has two primary goals — preserving and expanding affordable housing, and improving infrastructure and streets improvements. According to Tayer, the Community Development Block Grant program awards funding to local governments to find The emerald ash borer.
