Russia-Ukraine conflict hits home Through phone calls and Skype, Westminster woman worries about her parents BY LUKE ZARZECKI LZARZECKI@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Yana Kurenko remembers wearing a Vyshyvanka, an embroidered blouse decorated with Ukrainian ornaments, on Ukraine’s Independence Day in her home country. As Russia invaded Ukraine, the 28-year-old Westminster resident ordered two new ones – one for herself and another for her boyfriend – to stay connected to her culture. Kurenko moved to the United States nine years ago from Ukraine to learn English at a school in California. Her parents remained in her home country, but she’s trying to help evacuate them due to the recent Russian invasion. “Every day I’m asking, ‘Are you guys OK?’ Is it quiet there?’” she said. She said she communicates with her Ukrainian parents through Skype, messaging every 30 minutes. While she is in Colorado, they remain in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital city. Evacuating family members miles away with only phone access proves difficult, she said. Her mother is 57 and her father is in his 70s. She did not want to say their names for their safety. Their age makes the effort especially troubling because moving can often be difficult for them. She said her mother almost had a heart attack while trying to relocate to a bomb shelter.

Thornton’s council appointed Eric Garcia to fill the Ward 1 vacancy on a 5-3 vote during a special city council meeting on March 8, with City Councilors Karen Bigelow, Kathy Henson and Julia Marvin opposing. City Councilor Julia Marvin wanted more deliberation on the candidates and made a motion to have a discussion on all of the candidates. It failed 5-3. She pointed to the end of the March 6 meeting when the council interviewed candidates and gave their top choices. “We had potential consensus for at least two candidates,” Marvin said. Those two candidates were Jenice “JJ” Dove and Eric Garcia. Mayor Pro Tem Jessica Sandgren thought March 6 provided enough discussion on the candidates. “I think the majority did discuss who our preferences were,” she said. Marvin then made another motion to appoint Jenice “JJ” Dove to fill the vacancy. Marvin pointed to the divided council and said Dove received support from “both sides.” Marvin’s motion failed 5-3, however. Sandgren said that Dove told councilors she would not run for reelection when her appointed term is up. “I don’t want a placeholder,” she said in a separate interview. “JJ would have been great, but she also said she’s not interested in running.” SEE COUNCIL, P5
