Explosions rock Westminster Police continue investigating Stratus Townhomes blast BY LUKE ZARZECKI LZARZECKI@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The Westminster Fire Department said a Feb. 23 explosion and fire at the Stratus Townhomes directly affected eight units. The complex is in the 8300 block of Sheridan Boulevard and is the second explosion to hit the area this week.

At mid-afternoon, firefighters were still putting out the fire; however, crews said all of the residents have been accounted for. The extent of injuries and the cause of the blast are not known but neighbors said complex maintenance staff had been installing new air conditioners and water heaters in the buildings. Neighbors said the explosion and subsequent fire came from building 18 in the center of the complex. Residents in buildings 16, 17, 18 and 19 were told to evacuate. Many SEE EXPLOSIONS, P6

Thornton City Councilors will interview 11 candidates seeking to fill Jacque Phillips’ vacant seat at a special afternoon session on March 6. The Thornton City Clerk’s office received eleven applications to fill Jacque Phillips’ vacancy on City Council. On Feb. 22, the council voted 5-1 to move the interview date from a Thursday to a Sunday, from March 3 to March 6. Interviews are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. City Councilors Julia Marvin and

David Acunto were not present for the Feb. 22 discussion and Councilor Karen Bigelow abstained from the vote, which Thornton’s City Charter counts as a “yes” vote unless it is due to a conflict. In a separate conversation, Bigelow — who was an applicant during a vacancy in 2019 — said she isn’t voting because she does not believe the process is just. “It’s a sham and I want people to see it for what it is,” she said. “I participated two years ago as an applicant. The five already know who they are voting for. It’s a set-up.” “Until I got the list of the people that applied, I didn’t even know who applied for the position,” said Mayor Jan Kulmann in a separate interview. “I don’t think that was a question on replacing I think the question SEE COUNCIL, P3
