Some things Ken Haraldsen will never forget. One of them is the feeling of bullets whizzing by his head.

It was February 1945. The longtime Englewood resident was among the 106th Infantry Division soldiers sent as replacements for the members of that unit decimated in battle, he said. “There was still fighting going on in the Ardennes Forest,” he said. “I went forward to the line with our unit. There was heavy firing and I felt bullets pass very close to my head.” This was one of the lasting

memories Haraldsen talk about, long ago recollections stirred up by his December trip to Europe for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. The Greatest Generation Foundation called Haraldsen asking if he wanted to attend the anniversary celebration. “They called me because I was there in 1945,” he said. “I said yes, and the foundation arranged for 20 of us from the United States to

tmunds @coloradocommunitymedia.com The whine of power saws and the growl of forklift engines filled the air as crews in hard hats continued constructing the apartment complex on the former Flood Middle School location in Englewood. Wood Partners is the developer for the Alta Cherry Hills project that will cover about 4.4 acres. The former site of the Flood Middle School building fronts on Broadway for almost two blocks. The site also includes the former grass-covered lot to the east across Lincoln Street. Both locations are now active construction sites. Plans are to construct a twobuilding project that will contain 306 apartments. One of the fourstory buildings is being constructed on the former school building site while the second four-story building will be built on the lot to the east. The conceptual design is to include on-site parking for all tenants. The concept calls for the complex to be a green project with an effort to receive at least silver LEED Apartments continues on Page 18
