Group says increased water storage will ruin Bear Creek Lake Park Large crowd shows opposition support in city council meeting BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

How you can weigh in to make your priorities known

A group opposed to a plan that would drastically increase water storage at Bear Creek Reservoir presented their case at the March 28 regular Lakewood City Council meeting. At issue is a feasibility study being conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) to determine the pros and cons of adding nearly 10 times more water to the reservoir than the 2000 acre feet of water it currently holds.

In the next fiscal year, Jeffco will face significant cuts to its General Fund. These cuts could affect anything from Public Health funding to the Sheriff’s Office.

BEST OF THE BEST

Some Background The quality and quantity of county provided services largely depends on taxpayer revenue in the county’s General Fund. That revenue primarily comes from property taxes and fees for services. But the county only retains about 24 cents for every dollar of property taxes paid. The rest goes to things like urban renewal, cities and special districts, with the lion’s share (50 cents out of every dollar) going to the school district. County offices supported by the General Fund include Assessor, Board of County Commissioners, Coroner, District Attorney, Clerk and Recorder, Sheriff and Treasurer. The General Fund also supports other county funds including Public Health, Social Services and the Patrol Fund. According to the county’s website, the General Fund, with a total of $218,809,300 in the 2020 Adopted Budget, makes up only about one-third of the entire county budget but supports over 50 % of county overall employees and services. In the past two years, Jeffco has made cuts within the General Fund to slow the rate of spending and balance the county’s SEE BUDGET, P4
