Karl Aaron Bemish, 52, pled guilty to First Degree Murder Jan. 21 for the December 2020 strangulation death of his girlfriend, 45-year-old Hilary Engel. Bemish was sentenced by the First Judicial District Court to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole. Senior Deputy District Attorney Amanda Lessman called the plea to Murder One and its coinciding life sentence, appropriate. Engel, a nurse who worked at St. Anthony Hospital, was reported missing to police by her father after she was last seen dropping her son off at daycare Dec. 28, 2020. Her body was later discovered in her home by concerned friends. Bemish was arrested by Trinidad Police at a Days Inn Hotel, after hotel staff requested a wellness check be performed on him. Upon their arrival, police had to force their way into Blemish’s room, where they determined he was wanted on an outstanding First-degree Murder warrant in Jefferson County. “We are thankful for the prosecution’s work on this case, and that even though we continue to grieve the loss of Hilary, we believe this result was the best available outcome,” Engel’s family said in a statement through the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Engel leaves behind an 8-year-old son.
