Peter Robert Dettmer, 69, is back in custody after evading capture for years. Dettmer was arrested on 126 counts of sexual assault in 2016, but failed to appear at a hearing in January, 2021. The charges he’s facing include 63 counts of Sexual Assault — Victim Helpless, 62 counts of Sexual Assault — Victim Incapable and one count of Sexual Assault — Victim Incapable due to Force/Drugs/Other. According to court records in the case, Dettmer originally posted a $2,000 bond and was released. After failing to appear for his 2017 hearing, his bond was increased to $20,000. After his extradition was arranged this year, a judge set his bond at $1 million — cash only. Arrested, April 27 in Cuenca, Ecuador, Dettmer was returned to the U.S. Nov. 23. In a press release, Colorado First Judicial District Spokesman Michael Teague said Dettmer’s extradition was carried out by the FBI with assistance from the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs and the U.S. Department of State. Teague’s statement also said his office would not be releasing additional information or commenting further until the case is closed. Dettmer is only the second person extradited from Ecuador to the United States in the past 27 years.
