Something to crow about 25th annual Festival of Scarecrows in Olde Town STAFF REPORT
The 25th annual Festival of Scarecrows was held in Olde Town Square on Oct. 9, ringing in the fall with a host of autumnal activities including costume parades, pumpkin and zucchini weighing contests, a cone maze and a scarecrow contest. The event is organized by the Historic Olde Town Arvada Association and doubles as a charitable event for Ralston House. Hope, Community and Connection won the scarecrow contest with their entry `Bob,’ a nod to the late painter Bob Ross. The Poston Girls had the largest zucchini at 10.6 pounds, while Eziah Fluharty won the biggest pumpkin contest with his 67-pound entry. Approximately 3,000 people attended the festival, which also featured local vendors and representatives from community groups such as the Arvada Gardeners club.

Chad Broer, Principal at Chatfield High School for the past 6 years, resigned from his position Oct. 4 amid an investigation into him and the school’s Athletic Director for failing to follow district safety protocols. Broer and Craig Aukland, Athletic Director, were placed on administrative leave in August when the allegations first came to light. According to Jeffco Schools Spokesperson, Cameron Bell, Aukand resigned his position last week. A letter to parents sent by Dan Cohan, Chief of Schools and Scott Allensworth, Community Superintendent, Oct. 7, said retired Jeffco administrator, Keith Mead, will serve as Interim Athetic Director through the end of the current semester. Because the case involves minors, no specific details about the incident have been released. Aukland, who had been with the district since 2006, has been charged with a misdemeanor count of failure to report child abuse or neglect. State law requires someone in that position to report any suspected abuse or neglect. Jeffco Sheriff’s Department spokesperson, Karlyn Tilley, said the incident Aukland is being charged in connection with, involved allegations of sexual misconduct (but not allegations of sexual misconduct against Aukland). Broer, who had been with the district since 2003, is not facing criminal investigation. Former Chatfield Principal, Jim Ellis, was brought back to serve as interim principal during the investigation. He will remain in that position until a replacement can be found. Ellis served as principal at Chatfield High School from 1999-2004. Aukland is due to appear in Jefferson County Court Oct. 29.
