performance showed attendees how “Colombian people are fun … welcoming and positive.” For their final two numbers, the dancers performed an original routine incorporating music and costumes from “Encanto, “ and then taught a crowd of excited youngsters and parents a basic Colombian dance. Golden has named Summit County Manager Scott Vargo as its next city manager. Vargo is set to start Sept. 12, after Golden City Council approved the hire at its July 12 meeting. Vargo, who was among four finalists for the job, has worked for Summit County in various capacities since 1999. He’s been county manager for six years, overseeing about 500 employees across dozens of departments. Vargo will succeed Jason Slowinski, who left the city after seven years to join Colorado School of Mines. As Golden’s chief executive, Vargo will report directly to City Council and will oversee city staff, operations, programs and services. During a June 27 public meetand-greet with the city manager finalists, Vargo explained how he and his wife are now looking to move closer to the Denver metro area, after raising their two children in Summit County. He was drawn to Golden because it has much in common with Summit County: a myriad of outdoor recreation opportunities and ac-

All those elements came together this weekend as the city’s summertime Movies & Music in the Park

series returned. On July 15, dancers from Studio Colombia and guitarist El Javi performed before the night’s featured movie, Disney’s “Encanto.” Hundreds of locals turned out for the event, packing Parfet Park with picnic blankets and lawn chairs. The dancers and El Javi alternated taking the stage for the first hour of the night, with Studio Colombia showcasing the cumbia, the San Juanero and other traditional dances. Julio Martinez Coronado, executive director of Denver-based Studio Colombia, and his colleagues formed the nonprofit six years ago to promote Colombian folklore, dance, music and culture. He said he hoped the July 15
