Bon voyage to Vern and Vicki Farewell party for philanthropy power couple STAFF REPORT
There are power couples, and then there is the Wagners. Over the last 50 years, Vern And Vicki Wagner have had such a positive impact on the Golden community that when word got out that the two were moving to Montrose to be closer to family, plans began for a farewell celebration to mark their importance. The Golden Civic Foundation, Golden Chamber of Commerce, Golden Visitors & Information Center and Mayor Laura Weinberg teamed up to help throw the party, honoring the professional and philanthropic contributions the Wagners have made. “They’re great people, we really had a good turnout.” Julie Bartos with the Golden Civic Foundation said, following the festivities. The pair were honored on Oct. 14 on the Visitors Center patio, with Mayor Weinberg officially proclaming it “Vern & Vicki Wagner Day.” “Volunteerism is a core Golden value and Vern and Vicki have led the way for decades,” said Mayor Weinberg. “The quality of a community is determined by the quality of its members’ contributions. These two have been involved in so many aspects of our Golden community and helped make the city the special place it is today.” According to the Golden Civic Foundation the dynamic couple married in 1958, and moved with their three children to Golden in 1968 when Vern, a U.S. Army veteran and power line construction lineman, accepted a can line mechanic position at Adolph Coors Co. Guilty verdicts in deadly I-70 trucker trial Jurors convict driver on 27 counts BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
It took jurors less than a day to convict Rogel Aguilera-Mederos on more than two dozen counts — including four counts of vehicular homicide — for causing a deadly crash that occurred April 25, 2019 on eastbound I-70 near Lakewood. Twenty-eight vehicles including four semi trucks were damaged in the accident that swiftly turned into an inferno. The day before closing arguments were made, Aguilera-Mederos had taken the stand in his own defense. A native Spanish speaker who emigrated from Cuba in 2015, he testified through an interpreter. Despite ongoing confusion during questioning, attorneys on both sides of the case were able to elicit answers from the defendant. In the end, jurors agreed with prosecutors that Aguilera-Mederos was responsible for the accident and should be held accountable. Aguilera-Mederos, who was just 23 at the time of the crash, blamed malfunctioning brakes for the accident. Admittedly inexperienced in mountain driving, he said he performed necessary steps like Vern and Vicki Wagner.
