Although the COVID-19 pandemic continues, its negative impacts on Golden’s overall economic picture seem to have become an increas-

ingly distant memory. According to city data, the city saw five of its highest non-December months for sales tax collections since at least the start of 2018 in March, April, May, June and July of this year. Data for August is not yet available. According to the city data, sales tax collections reached a non-December high of $1,992,024 in June 2021. That was up about $372,000

from the same month in 2020 and about $307,000 from the same month in 2019. Collections dipped some in July from June to $1,714,080. “Folks, we’ve got to pick up the pace.” That was President Joe Biden’s message as he spoke Sept. 14 about his plans to address climate change while creating new jobs during a visit to the National Renewable Energy Lab’s Flatirons campus, located north of the Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson County. During his roughly 15-minute speech, Biden touted the need for the federal government to establish more ambitious goals for reducing emissions and addressing climate change than were set even by the Obama administration, in which he served as vice president. “When those (goals) were set, we had more time,” said Biden. “We don’t have that time now. The goals are different because the necessity is there … We don’t have much more than 10 years, for real.” Among the new goals set by Biden is for the nation to reach 100% carbon-free power by 2035. Biden said he also recently announced a new target for the country to reduce its carbon emissions by between 50 and 52% by 2030.
