Craig said residents at Wind Crest are accepting and loving as they get involved in planning the inclusive events. Erickson said a lot of the ideas come from the community’s diversity and inclusion program, which is led by the 2021 parade Grand Marshal Jim Genasci.

The Douglas County School District was able to fold additional dollars into the 2021-22 final budget from the proposed budget that district staff presented in May. The district’s board unanimously approved the budget for the upcoming school year at a June 22 meeting.

Board directors had nothing but praise to offer district finance staff, who were drafting the budget for four months and working to accommodate the many requests from board directors and community members about next year’s financial priorities.

“This work is the clearest I have ever been able to understand the school district budget,” said Board Director Christina Ciancio-Schor at the June 22 meeting.

The budget-drafting process for the 2021-22 school year dealt with several unprecedented factors, such as restoring budget cuts made in response to COVID-19 and distributing federal relief money. Also, the SEE BUDGET, P31

Mental health crisis lingers from pandemic Pot is boiling over as lawmakers, health officials react to growing number of cases

Before the 2020 pandemic, Kelly Blike described the behavioral health situation for both adolescents and adults in Colorado as a boiling pot of water, filled to the rim. Now, that pot is spilling over with no containment in site.

“There has always been a mental health crisis in Colorado, COVID just echoed it,” said Blike, a social worker at the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital. “The isolation and lack of physical contact has exaggerated a problem that was already in place. We cannot ignore the problem. We have a long way to go.”

As businesses and life appear to be returning to normal from the pandemic, Blike said hospitals are still dealing with the residual effects.

Dr. Ben Usatch, director of emergency medicine at the Highlands Ranch hospital, said the 21-bed emergency room has a handful of patients needing mental health care on any given day. The numbers are not decreasing, and he does not

think they will any time soon.

“There is a post-COVID syndrome that we are going to be cleaning up for a long time,” he said.

In June, Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) declared a crisis. The statewide organization reported an increase in young patients attempting suicide and presenting to local emergency rooms with issues related to substance abuse and eating disorders.

CHC has facilities around the Denver metro area in Highlands Ranch, Broomfield, Centennial, Parker, Wheat Ridge, Denver and Aurora.

Dr. Jenna Glover, director of psychology training at CHC, said in past years, there was a decrease in suicide attempts and emergency room visits for behavioral health in the summer months. That is not the case this year.

“We’re anticipating a spike in these visits as kids return to a ‘normal’ school year where they may be confronting challenges with setbacks in their education and inperson interactions,” she said.

Usatch said he has never seen so many adolescent patients being admitted to the hospital because substance abuse with drugs and alcohol has become debilitating.

Blike said during the pandemic parents were struggling to cope with restrictions, changes and finances. It is no surprise that children and teens were just as heavily impacted, she said.

In June, CHC called on the state Legislature to step up and start helping them deal with the growing crisis. Since the call for help, Sarah Davis, a media relations coordinator for CHC, said lawmakers did take a step forward in the 2021 legislative session.

Heidi Baskfield, CHC vice president of population health and advocacy, said passing Senate Bill 137, the Behavioral Health Recovery Act, is a step in the right direction. The new law provides short-term investment in critical priority areas like communitybased youth crisis services, additional residential beds, and more resources for school-based health centers.

Another step in the right direction, Baskfield said is House Bill 1258. The bill, Rapid Mental Health Response for Colorado Youth, establishes a temporary program to facilitate youth mental health services in response to identified needs.

On June 18, Gov. Jared Polis signed HB 1258 into law during a special ceremony that included bipartisan support from Reps. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, D-Commerce City, and Kevin Van Winkle, RHighlands Ranch, and Sens. Janet Buckner, D-Aurora, and Rob Woodward, R-Loveland.

As the bill was signed by Polis, Van Winkle said HB 1258 is one of the most important pieces of legislation passed in the 2021 session.

Michaelson Jenet sponsored both HB 1258 and SB 137. The Adams County representative said when she ran for office her primary platform was youth mental health.

After the 2021 session, Michaelson Jenet said she is happy the two bills passed because they are not just Band-Aids on a growing problem.

They are real steps forward to help a lot of people, she said.

“For years I have been banging the drum that we are in a suicide pandemic,” Michaelson Jenet said. “(HB 1258) opens up access for kids who are not getting the support they need right now. This will help all demographics and ages.”

Baskfield said the rapid response program will provide youths easy access to screening and treatment through an app-based screening tool. The $9 million bill will create the Temporary Youth Mental Health Services Program, reimbursing providers for three mental health sessions for young patients.

To put in perspective what HB 1258 can do for Colorado’s youths, Michaelson Jenet noted that text in the bill says it will help 26,000 young people. However, she believes it will help reach thousands more, as the tools are available for free.

Michaelson Jenet said the bills passed in 2021 are just a steppingstone — the state has a long road to recovery in addressing mental health issues for both adults and adolescents.

Dig out those cobbler recipes.

The first crop of Colorado peaches is due to arrive on the Front Range in early July, said Joe Stoll of Forte Farms, one of the biggest purveyors of the Western Slope’s tastiest export.

“We’ve got a drought over there, but the peaches are looking really good,” Stoll said from his booth at the Aspen Grove farmers market on June 23.

In the meantime, Western Slope cherries and apricots are coming in well, Stoll said.

Still, it’s been a bit of an odd year for produce, said Jeremy Becker and Diego Hernandez of Ant D’s Fine Foods, a popular produce booth at the market.

“On the Front Range, lots of coldweather crops came in really good,” Becker said. “Peas, greens and cauliflower are looking awesome.

But we’re seeing shortages of other things — there’s hardly any Colorado asparagus, and even zucchini can be hard to come across some days.

It’s a bit of a roller coaster ride.”

Alas, Rocky Ford melons and Olathe sweet corn aren’t in yet either.

This year has been busy, although it’s yet to be seen whether it can match 2020, Hernandez said.

“It was the best year we ever had,” he said. “Grocery stores ran out of stuff, and people wanted to be outside, and people were cooking at home a lot. I actually think it helped people reconnect with good food.”

But with volatility in the weather and the economy, Hernandez said this is still a great time to support small business and small farmers.

“It’s a great summer to learn to can and preserve, too,” he said.

“That way you can have this yummy stuff all year long.”

The Aspen Grove Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., just north of Mineral Avenue on the west side of Santa Fe Drive.

Commissioners agree to new leadership structure Chair position will rotate monthly

After a “very painful” process following a bout of public infighting, the Douglas County board of commissioners has unanimously agreed to a new leadership structure.

In the past, the board’s chair position rotated on an annual basis based on district, but now Commissioners Abe Laydon and Lora Thomas will alternate serving in the position every month. The decision comes after the board had four meetings with Bill Cadman, a former state legislator who served as president of the Colorado Senate. Cadman volunteered to help mediate the tense situation among commissioners.

“The last 10 weeks have been very painful,” Thomas said.

Beginning with Laydon as chair in July, the two will swap between that position and vice chair every month, beginning on the first Thursday, until January 2023, according to a county spokesperson.

The board’s chair serves as the public representative and leader of the board, according to the county’s policy for commissioners. The chair presides over meetings and decide agendas.

“We worked through a lot of things, some personal, most profes-

sional,” said Commissioner George Teal, the third member of the board, about the mediation meetings.

This agreement will expire in January 2023, after the 2022 election for Laydon’s seat. Regardless of whether there is a new board member or if Laydon is reelected, the board will revisit this agreement then.

“We recognize the importance of governing productively with excellence. This leadership structure reflects our agreement to work together in the public interest for those we serve. There is much to do, and we believe this is the best solution to help us move forward,” according to a statement from the board.

Background of situation In April, Thomas, who had been serving as board chair since January, was stripped of that title after Laydon and Teal said she lied and abused her position following a disagreement with the two of them.

At the time, Thomas responded to her removal as chair with a post on her personal website, saying the other two commissioners were “attempting to silence” her. Months after the allegations were made, Thomas says she never saw any evidence to support them.

“For myself and the public, I wanted them to know that there’s been no evidence that I did any heinous crime or anything that rose to the level of a censure,” she said in a June 23 interview.

The controversy originated with a

request from The New York Times for an interview with a county commissioner. While Teal and Laydon agreed that they wanted Laydon to speak with the reporter, Thomas disagreed and said the two were violating their internal media policy, which would have made it her turn to speak with the reporter. Thomas took this complaint public and emailed at least one member of the business community about the issue.

In a resolution they planned to approve the following week, Teal and Laydon wrote that Thomas had deliberately lied to members of the public and businesses about the media policy, claiming it was an attempt to influence the board.

“Some of those emails were received by businesses with active land-use applications before the board and were interpreted to be intimidation to compel those applicants to influence the board,” according to the resolution.

Thomas later said she didn’t lie but was mistaken in her discussions about the internal media policy.

The resolution would have formally removed Thomas from the board chair position and publicly censured her.

However, the day of the board meeting, April 27, commissioners met in an earlier work session and decided not to approve that resolution. Instead, the commissioners said they would try to work out their disagreements.

The board had several meetings previous to the mediation meetings where they attempted to do so. In those, commissioners repeated accusations against each other related to this incident and earlier disagreements.

Mediation meetings In their meetings with Cadman, commissioners talked about their personal, professional and ideological issues with each other, Teal said.

“What I think really happened is we put our heads together and came up with a plan that allows us to get back to work for the people of Douglas County,” he said. “I think we really came together as a team.”

While the meetings began conten-

tiously, they became less so over time, he said.

“There was some understanding,” Thomas said. “I’m not sure we completely agreed on all issues.”

The public meetings were listed as “Administrative Discussion” on the board’s weekly schedule.

That schedule, which lists meetings among commissioners — all of which are public — is available at douglas.co.us/commissionersweekly-schedule.

The new monthly rotation plan became an option after Teal said he wouldn’t agree to Thomas returning as sole chair, Teal and Thomas said.

Then, Teal, who was elected in November 2020, offered to remove himself from the chair rotation, according to the county spokesperson.

“It’s not a title I need right now,” Teal said.

Teal said that while there could have “easily” been a two-to-one decision, Laydon insisted on a unanimous decision and that’s how the board came to this agreement.

“We engaged in direct discussions about challenges and shared our perspectives about those challenges,” Laydon said. “We have different points of view about those challenges but agreed that direct, timely communications with one another is productive.”

Thomas said that during the meetings she brought up her desire to see herself vindicated following the accusations that were made about her in the other commissioners’ earlier resolution.

“The most frightening thing through all of this is that the public would think that my integrity is tarnished,” Thomas said. “I have never spoken a false statement, I have never lied … I speak the truth unvarnished and I am not corrupt.”

When asked about Thomas’ comments on vindication and evidence for earlier allegations, Laydon repeated that “we have very different perspectives about those challenges.”

“However, I am pleased that we have made strides to address them as the public expects,” he said.

“Professionally and internally as a board.”

4 school board candidates announced Candidates running for November election STAFF REPORT

An organization called “Kids First DCSD” has announced several school board candidates running as a slate for the November election, according to a news release from the group.

The slate consists of Becky Myers, Mike Peterson, Christy Williams and Kaylee Winegar. All four either have children in the school district or have in the past, according to the news release.

The purpose of the committee listed on the registration form says “parents, teachers and community members dedicated to supporting candidates for Douglas County School Board elections who prioritize kids first in all decision making,” according to the form.

“Kids First DCSD” is listed on the

Secretary of State’s TRACER website as a political committee based in Castle Rock.

Myers is a retired DCSD teacher with more than 25 years’ experience. In 1993, Myers she and her husband moved to Castle Rock, where her two children attended kindergarten through 12th grade. She is running for school board from District D. Peterson is a former Navy Topgun instructor. He moved to ColoPeterson rado in 2004 while serving in the military and retired from the Navy in 2011. He and his wife have three daughters.

He is running for school board in District B. Williams is a small business owner, wife and mother to three children who attend Douglas County Schools. She is entering

Proposed map launches redistricting process Highlands Ranch would shift from 6th Congressional District to 7th under initial map

Colorado’s new, eighth congressional district would include the cities of Arvada, Westminster, Broomfield, Thornton, Brighton and Platteville, a preliminary map drawn by nonpartisan redistricting staff and presented to the state’s Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission on June 23 shows.

Staff placed the new district in the north Denver metro area for two reasons, said Jeremiah Barry, a legislative attorney advising the redistricting commissions.

“The first reason was we recognize this was the fastest-growing area of the state,” said Barry. “The second was a recognition that although nearly 30% of the population of the state are Hispanics, none of the current seven districts are represented by a Hispanic.”

The map is a major first step in the state’s once-a-decade redistricting process. It will evolve as the commission gets input from the public and interest groups over the next few months.

The preliminary map is based on 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimates because of a months-long delay in the release of the final population data collected during the 2020 Census. Once the U.S. Census Bureau releases that data in August, redistricting staff will have to adjust the map.

“It’s the starting line, but nowhere near the finish line,” Curtis Hubbard, a Democratic political consultant who is registered to lobby the redistricting commissions, said of the preliminary map.

The initial map, the public’s first glimpse at how the 8th District may affect the state’s political landscape, also makes changes to the state’s existing seven congressional districts.

The 3rd District, represented by Garfield County Republican Lauren Boebert, would gain Eagle, Summit, Grand, Park, Teller and Fremont counties, as well as some of western Boulder County. The San Luis Valley and Pueblo County would be dropped and added to the 4th District, which includes northeast and southeast Colorado and is currently represented by U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican from Windsor.

The 5th District, currently represented by U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Springs Republican, would contract to include only parts of El Paso County. Southeastern El Paso County and counties in the western part of the district would be drawn into other districts.

The 7th District, centered in Jef-

ferson County and currently represented by U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, an Arvada Democrat, would shift south to include Castle Rock, dropping some of Denver’s northwest suburbs, including the bulk of Arvada.

Perlmutter, however, would remain in the 7th District under the preliminary map, though only narrowly — by about 50 yards.

The new 7th District looks to be the most competitive of the new map. In 2018, the Republican candidate won the attorney general’s contest in the new proposed district by 3 percentage points, though a Democrat won the statewide vote.

The 1st District, represented now

by U.S. Rep. Diana Degette, a Denver Democrat, would encompass only Denver, dropping portions of Arapahoe and Jefferson counties.

The 6th District, represented by U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, a Centennial Democrat, would lose some of its northern half while continuing to include Aurora, Centennial and Littleton. Both of those districts went heavily Democratic in the 2018 attorney general contest, and, along with the 2nd District in Boulder and Larimer counties, are considered safe seats for that party.

Nonpartisan staff used the results of the 2018 attorney general contest, the closest statewide race in a recent, nonpresidential election year, as well as voter registration figures to measure political competitiveness of the redrawn districts.

Based on results of the attorney

general race, Districts 1 and 2 would be solidly Democratic while Districts 4 and 5 would be solidly Republican.

Republicans would have an advantage of nearly 10 percentage points in the 3rd District and 3 percentage points in the 7th District, while Democrats would hold a 12.7 percentage point advantage in the 6th District and 7.3 percentage point advantage in the 8th District.

Colorado Democratic Party Chairwoman Morgan Carroll said she was disappointed by the map, arguing the proposed districts advantage the GOP. “While this preliminary plan seems to put a thumb on the scale for Republicans, it is too soon to know how the commissioners will change them,” she said in a statement.

Multimillionaire weighs in Former DaVita CEO and multimillionaire Kent Thiry, who backed the constitutional amendments that created the independent commissions, also weighed in after the release of the preliminary map.

“These congressional seats belong to the people, not to a political party or interest,” said Thiry. “It’s still early in the process, but it appears the commission is responding to the mandate that it draw competitive districts whenever and wherever possible.”

Colorado’s population grew 14.5% from 2010 to 2020, making it one of six states that will get one or more new congressional seats in 2022 due to population gains.

Colorado’s seven existing congressional districts are currently represented by four Democrats and three Republicans.

The map is nonpartisan legislative staff’s initial effort at redrawing the congressional districts, under a 2018 constitutional amendment — Amendment Y — approved by voters.

This year marks the first time independent commissions created

by Amendment Y and a companion ballot question, Amendment Z, are overseeing the once-a-decade redistricting process in Colorado.

In the past, state lawmakers drew the congressional lines, though they often deadlocked and courts decided on the final districts.

State Sen. Faith Winter, a Westminster Democrat, released a statement after the preliminary map was unveiled appearing to express interest in running for the new seat.

“It’s no surprise to see the initial redistricting map center on Adams County for the new CD8,” Winter wrote. “Not only does this help keep cities and school districts whole, it captures diverse communities of interest and creates a district focused on working-class families.

Official census results coming Once nonpartisan legislative staff gets the official 2020 Census data on Aug. 16, they will use feedback from the public hearings, as well as comments submitted to the commissions online, to draw a new set of maps. Another set of hearings will be held in each of the state’s seven congressional districts on the updated district maps.

It’s not clear how different the final population data will be from the estimates used for this preliminary map.

This year, the Census Bureau is also using a new statistical method for ensuring privacy that would have the largest impact on redistricting at the hyperlocal level. Differential privacy injects random errors into the data to make it harder to identify individuals in small communities. Several states are against its use because it also makes data on small geographic levels, like a single census block, less accurate.

Because it’s the first time the agency has used the privacy method, staff say they don’t know what impact it will have until they have the data in hand.

Members of the commissions may recommend changes to the maps as well. The commissioners also aren’t required to adopt the staff’s maps.

“They can choose a map that was drawn by someone completely away from staff or by a commissioner themselves,” Barry said.

The Colorado Supreme Court must ultimately approve the maps submitted by the two commissions before the end of the year, setting the stage for the 2022 election.

boundaries together over specific “communities of interest,” a term used to describe communities with shared needs and interests. Barry said staff had difficulty identifying the geography of some communities named by members of the public.

“In this plan, of the 64 counties in the state, 55 are wholly contained within one congressional district,” Barry said.

Staff also acknowledged that comments from certain interest groups influenced their proposal, including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which pushed for a district capturing concentrated Hispanic populations in north metro Denver, and Club 20, which called for keeping the entire Western Slope in the same district.

“Given the population distribution in Colorado, it is difficult to draw more competitive districts,” Barry said. “When the final data comes out from the Census Bureau, it likely will change, and maybe districts will become more competitive.”

Maximizing political competitiveness also wasn’t a high priority for this draft map, Barry said, as staff is required to meet all the other constitutional requirements first.

Those constitutional requirements include equal population and adherence to the federal Voting Rights Act, which protects minority voters from gerrymandering.

The map creates three districts with Hispanic populations of more than 28%: District 1 with 28.6%, District 4 with 31% and District 8 with 29.9%, according to the preliminary data.

Staff also sought to keep rural areas together as much as possible, keep the San Luis Valley in one district and keep Boulder and Fort Collins together “due to the large research institutions in those towns,” Barry said.

“We should also point out, many times we received conflicting requests under public comments, concerning where some counties should be placed,” he added.

I cry, and Harry wonders why, when I watch old movies.

Take my challenge: watch “City Lights” and be sure to stick around for the ending, one of the most famous in cinema history.

It’s one of Charlie Chaplin’s best films. The flower girl was played

by Virginia Cherrill, whom Chaplin fired after filming began, then rehired when he realized she was the one.

I’ll cry if I watch one of those manipulative videos on YouTube that shows a dog being reunited with its family.

Four keys to achieving maximum results

D

uring a recent webinar I participated in, one of the other guests talked about having a passion for success, a passion WINNING for winning, and even a passion for WORDS losing. When we succeed and as we win, it becomes very easy to follow the philosophy of “Success begets success,” and “Winning begets winning.”

What about when Michael Norton we lose, or don’t experience the results we are looking for? Is it possible or realistic to have the same level of passion?

Does “Losing beget losing?” The answer to both questions is yes.

No one likes to lose, but everyone can learn from losing. And this is where the passion comes in, making it possible for us to see what we could have done better or differently. And when we can tap into our enthusiasm for learning from failing, it becomes much easier to find the passion for losing. Even becoming so passionate about

losing that we will try new and different things so that we do not fail again in the same way.

Unfortunately, sometimes losing does beget losing. However, this only happens when we fail to take something away from the loss. If we simply accept defeat and keep doing the same behaviors repeatedly, we will continue to lose.

Now when it comes to maximizing results, there are four qualities that I have seen top performers focus on in their pursuit and achievement of success. These qualities include passion, hope, motivation and action.

Living and working with passion is invaluable. Passion excites us.

Passion involves us. Passion connects us mentally, physically, and spiritually. Passion is the secret super-ingredient of success and the realization of desired results.

No matter what we do, regardless of where we are in life, whether we are just starting out, in the middle of our life or career, or winding down and enjoying our sunset years, if we maintain our passion for what we have done and what we are currently doing, it will make the difference in our outcomes.

Hope is the great activator. Sometimes hope is born out of anger or frustration. We are tired of losing or not seeing the results we have been seeking, or we are not seeing progress fast enough. We get so angry or frustrated that we become hopeful. And when we have hope we begin to see the world through a different lens. We see our personal and professional goals and objectives as something we can not only achieve but exceed. With passion-driven hope, our possibilities are endless.

When we find that spark of passion and infuse it with hope, our motivation begins to kick in. We are motivated to make changes that may be needed, attempt things that we used to fear, and look at the obstacles ahead of us as nothing more than the smallest of hills to climb. There are three kinds of motivation; fear; incentive; and growth. And it’s OK to derive our motivation from any one of these.

However, fear-based and incentivebased motivation is only temporary, whereas growth-based motivation is longer lasting.

Now let’s put the fourth key to achieving maximum results into

place. Passion, hope, and motivation may sound fluffy to you, maybe even too soft. Perhaps they are, and that’s OK because they work, or at least they work when we couple them with action. It doesn’t matter how passionate, hopeful, or motivated that we are, if we do not turn those into action, it is really just fluff. Acting means that we move from thinking about doing something, to doing it. Acting means that we are willing to take the first step toward our goals and dreams, knowing that steps two, three and four will follow.

Four keys to maximizing results; passion, hope, motivation and action. Which ones are you already doing and doing well? Which ones could you use a little help with?

Lebsack reaches ‘American Ninja Warrior’ semifinals Castle Rock teen will be on the national stage again July 19

No matter what the outcome, Castle Rock teen Kaden Lebsack has performed well on the NBC

hit competition show “American Ninja Warrior.” The show, now in its 13th season, is allowing teenagers to compete with adults for the first time.

Lebsack, 15, is scheduled to appear on the show’s semifinal round on July 19.

Lebsack’s mom, Brandi Lebsack, said her son continues to do a great job as he moves through the competition. The show had qualifiers in Tacoma, Washington,

where he clocked the show’s fastest course time, she said.

In a June 7 airing, announcers were amazed with how easily Lebsack glided through the course.

Remarkably, the resolution stated: “WHEREAS, the Mask Order is not enforceable because it fails strict scrutiny analysis; i.e. depriving citizens of fundamental constitutional rights without being narrowly tailored to a compelling government interest …”

If the commissioners sincerely believe that, they should file for an injunction rather than engage in political pomposity and puffery.

Commissioner Laydon evidently believes that he can decide what public health measures are allowed during a pandemic based on “fundamental constitutional rights.” Yet in the unanimous 1824

ith COVID-19 restrictions lifting throughout most of the state, communities throughout Colorado are planning triumphant returns to Independence Day festivities. Here are some events scheduled for the Fourth of July weekend throughout the Denver metro area: Adams County’s Stars and Stripes returns from its pandemic hiatus for Saturday, July 3 at Riverdale Regional Park, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton. Fort Lupton On the Fourth of July, residents will find a ninja warrior course, face painting and fireworks. Events begin at 1 p.m. at Community Park, 203 S. Harrison Ave. Georgetown will host its annual Fourth of July parade and barbecue.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. near City Park and will travel through downtown Georgetown. The barbecue starts at noon in City Park with a band starting at 12:30 p.m. Additional music and entertainment will be in the downtown area throughout the afternoon.

Lone Tree revamped its Fourth of July festivities to feature a Family Fun Ride and Stroll, Party in the Park at Prairie Sky and a firework display. The Family Fun Ride and Stroll invites children and their families to decorate bikes, scooters, strollers, etc. in festive adornments and walk the mile-long route from Lone Tree Elementary to Prairie Sky Park along Willow Creek Trail.

That portion of the festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Party in the Park at Prairie Sky will go from 7 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. and include a DJ, roving entertainment and live music from Jakarta — a dance party band from Denver.

Northglenn/Westminster teamed up for a day full of fun events on Sunday, July 4. Throughout the day of July 4, Northglenn will host a car show, family fun lunch and community dinners at different parks. Erickson said at the beginning the diversity and inclusion program had about seven members. Now, he said there are more than 60 members.

In kicking off the 2021 parade, Genasci said he has participated in 37 consecutive Pride parades all over the country, including New York and Washington D.C. Genasci said he participates in honor of his son who came out as gay in the 1980s.

“It’s so important that the gay, lesbian, bisexual community and all have visible acceptance,” Genasci said.

“I participated in my first Pride parade in 1983. We celebrate our son’s gayness.

He came out to us that he was not only gay but was with a partner who was Black. In those days, there was so much negativity. We are family. We are open. We are proud.”

Genasci said instead of

a march, which sounds militaristic, he feels the annual event should be known as the Gay Mardi Gras because it is a true celebration.

While holding a flag promoting love, peace, respect and pride, resident Mary Kay Pera said she is proud of Wind Crest for speaking up and being open and accepting.

Employees who belong to the LGBTQ community were also impressed with how supportive the residents and family are at Wind Crest. Emma Wheeler, a Wind Crest employee, said it is powerful to see the support.

“Here we have this older community waving flags and openly supporting all,” she said. “It is encouraging and exciting. We have a lot of people here. We have a lot of love here.”

Resident Rob Datsko walked the parade route with his family, stating, “This parade is great. I just feel like America is about freedom, justice and the welcoming of all.”

Sachs Foundation awards local teen scholarship

Highlands Ranch teen Aliya “Timmy” Kola-Abiola said unlike his parents, he will be able to enjoy college on a different level thanks to a $10,000 scholarship from the Sachs Foundation.

On June 24, the Sachs Foundation announced it awarded more than $2.44 million in scholarships to Black students in Colorado.

Kola-Abiola, 18, said he is honored to be one of many students chosen, noting the money will allow him to attend Tufts University in Massachusetts. While he researched schools in Colorado, Kola-Abiola said his parents wanted him to attend college in another state to learn more independence.

Kola-Abiola, an immigrant from Nigeria, said he is excited for the opportunity the scholarship provides.

“This scholarship will allow me to not worry about tuition,” he said. “I will be able to focus on school, building community and making friends.”

Kola-Abiola said his parents also attended college but had a different experience because they had to not only focus on studies, but they had to work to earn money to pay bills and send back home to family in Nigeria.

Foundation makes it possible for students to not only get a higher education, but also to enjoy college without the added layer of stress so many Black students face each year.

Founded during the Great Depression by Pikes Peak resident Henry Sachs, the Sachs Foundation has provided scholarships to thousands of Black Colorado students. The foundation is now in its 90th year.

A press release announcing the current year winners said while discrimination and economic obstacles Black students faced in Henry Sachs’ time were more overt, persistent disparities in wealth, health and access to

higher education that Black Coloradans face now underscore the relevance of the Sachs Foundation’s mission and the impact the organization is making with its unique approach to education equity.

“I see the ‘Next Greatest Generation’ every time I review the stories of Sachs Foundation scholarship students,” said foundation President Ben Ralston.

“These young people are not only brilliant scholars, they are incredibly plugged in to their communities and focused on helping others. It gives me hope because I truly believe they’ll make the world a better place.”

Kola-Abiola, a recent graduate of George Washington High School, said he plans to major in computer engineering. He also plans to venture into his interests, which is part of the reason he chose Tufts University. The school has a liberal arts programs where Kola-Abiola said he will be able to venture into history and philosophy studies.

In high school, Kola-Abiola said he played soccer, while noting he was better at watching than playing the sport. The college freshman also participated in a variety of STEM programs, and the Minds Matter Colorado mentorship program.

Kola-Abiola said the mentorship programs opened his eyes to computer engineering.

Palomino Park Apartments sells for $435 million

The recent $435 million sale of the Palomino Park Apartments in Highlands Ranch is the largest single-asset apartment transaction in Colorado history, according to the company that brokered the sale.

In a June 17 press release, JLL Capital Market announced the closing of the $435 million sale and $282.75 million financing for the Palomino Park Apartments, a 1,184-unit apartment community located at 6700 Palomino Parkway, off Quebec Street between Business Center Drive and Gleneagles Village Parkway.

According to the news release, JLL represented the seller, Nuveen Real Estate, to complete the sale. JLL also represented an undisclosed buyer to secure the financing.

The 1,184 apartments, described by JLL as a “legacy community,” are part of a 106acre master-planned site. The apartments are arranged in three separate villages, including Blue Ridge, Green River and Red Canyon. The purchase includes access to a 26,000-square-foot recreation center, the Colorado Club, that sits on a 30-acre central park within the community and serves as an amenity for the three apartment villages as well as the two, for-sale owner-occupied villages.

Mountain Vista, Ponderosa capture baseball titles Valor delivers pitching gem, Ponderosa shows hitting prowess

Mountain Vista and Ponderosa claimed state baseball championships in different ways.

The Golden Eagles used strong pitching performances and smart base running to edge Valor Christian, 3-2, in the Class 5A championship game while Ponderosa just pounded out an 11-2 win over Holy Family in the 4A title contest.

Visa rode the pitching performances of senior starter Evan Ma gill and senior reliever Griffin Hart in the conquest over Valor Christian in the June 25 5A final game at Kelli McGuire Field at AllStar Park in Lakewood.

In semifinal games earlier in the day, the Golden Eagles (17-2) held on to down Fairview 6-4 while Valor Christian (18-5) advanced to the title game with a 10-1 romp over Fort Collins.

It was the second state title in three seasons for Vista who won the school’s first crown in 2018.

“The first one was special because it was the first one for Vista,” said Vista coach Ron Quinton. “This one was special because of the boys. This is a close group.

This was a different special because a lot of people counted these guys out.”

Both Vista and Valor each got four hits during the game but Ma gill dominated with his curve ball for six innings and Hart saved the victory with a one-two-three seventh inning.

Both Ma gill and Hart were freshman on the 2018 state title team.

“The curve ball was on, the fast ball was on, the slider was on and I didn’t throw a change up,” said Ma gill. “It was a good day. We won state. We worked all season for it.”

Valor took the lead in the top of the first on Blake Wilson’s two run double but Vista came back with a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by Tyler Meija who was 2-for-2 and hit by a pitch in the game.

Travis Sprinkle opened the bottom second inning with a infield hit and Trey Dunn walked. After three wild pitches which advanced the runners, both scored and the Golden Eagles grabbed a 3-2 advantage with just an infield hit during the frame.

Magill allowed four hits and struck out nine batters in six innings of work. Valor had a man on third base with one out after an error and wild catch in the sixth inning but Magill got a strike out and rightfielder Sean Marlow made a diving catch on a fly ball to retire the side.

“You’ve got to get the outs with one out,” said Magill. “I was happy to get the strikeout. I was thinking

“The second baseman probably should have caught it because he was underneath it but my one rule is catch the ball,” he added.

“Our guys did a great job,” said Valor coach Keith Wahl “They’ll be another day.”

Ponderosa, playing for teammate Luke Karel who is hospitalized while battling leukemia, went into the June 26 finals undefeated in the double elimination tournament but dropped a 10-4 game to Holy Family in the semifinals. The Mustangs got to come back to play the Tigers in the afternoon title game

on June 26 in Pueblo.

The Mustangs scored five runs in the sixth inning to seal the title victory over Holy Family and finish the season with a 21-3 record.

Starting pitcher Derek Lukes scattered four hits to Holy Family in seven innings while Skyler Ahern and Dylan Carey each had three hits and combined for three RBIs to spark the Pondo offense.

Parker Dennis and Carson Conant had two hits each for the Mustangs.

Valor wins state in girls 5A track Grandview and Cherry Creek take runners-up spots

Valor Christian track coach Brian Kula had a good feeling about this season, and the girls track team turned the hopes of their coach into a state championship.

The Eagles won the Class 5A girls state championship on June 26 which was the final day of the 3-day state track meet at Jefferson County Stadium.

“We knew we had a strong team but they still has to execute and they did a phenomenal job of that,” said Kula. “We had a couple little hiccups we had to deal with but we really had a good day final day.

“This group of girls have been working hard for two years now and it just didn’t happen over night. We just got off to a good start in the hurdles. Our little freshman Madi Procter placed fifth and then Camille (Peisner) won the 100 and we just started gaining momentum and things kept falling into place. I’m really proud. They have not lost a state track meet since 2017.”

Peisner won both the 100 meters (11.88) and the 200 meters (23.92) and was second in the 400 meters to help the Eagles gain points on the final day which ended in rain.

Junior Kylie Bahr was first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.93.

“I felt like I ran pretty good,” said Bahr. “It was a PR which was nice.

Going in I just tired to stay super calm. It (winning state) shows how good our coaching staff is and how much effort we put in at practice and stuff.”

The Eagles put more distance between them and the field with a victory in the 4x400 relay in 3:52.92.

Valor had 130.5 points with Grandview coming in second with 83.5 points. Cherry Creek was third with 61.5 markers.

In the boys 5A meet, Grandview won the state title with 78.5 points and Cherry Creek was second (57) and Valor Christian third (44).

Cherry Creek came up short with points in the team standings but Riley Stewart, Parker Wolfe and Ky Oday captured individual events.

In fact, Stewart won four events.

She was part of Creek’s winning 3,200 relay team, won the 800 meters (2:09.60) on June 24, the 3,200 run (10.31.45) on June 25 and set a state meet record of 4:45.96 on June 26 in

the 1,600 meters.

“I knew my legs were tired from this week but I just had to push through,” said the junior who had previously set a Colorado record of 4:44.13 in the 1,600. “It’s amazing to set a state record. Like two weeks ago I had the record like individually for Colorado and now to have the state one too it is just so awesome and just to be able to come back here next year and try to push that, I’m just so happy.”

Oday won the boys 400 meters (48.00) and was second in the 100yard dash. Wolfe, a senior who will run at North Carolina next year, took the boys 3,200 in 9:07.87 but finished second to Mountain Vista senior Harrison Witt in the 1,600 meters.

Witt, who will be heading to Princeton, ran past Wolfe on the final lap and posted a state record of 4:04.36.

He also won the 800 meters in meet record time of 1:48.75.

“It was incredible to race against him (Wolfe),” said Witt. He’s one of the best athletes of our generation.

“I just wanted him not to get away before the last lap. I’m very confident in my kick and speed so I had to keep him in range to make a move. When he opened the inside up for me I just figured it was time to go and leave it all on the track.”

Other winners included Fabiola Belihi of Regis Jesuit in the 5A girls long jump with a leap of 18 feet and Noah Kelly of Lutheran who won 3A pole vault by clearing 14 feet.

Teams line up as champions Lacrosse, girls soccer, boys volleyball

Mountain Vista’s boys lacrosse team continued its dramatic march to the Colorado state championship.

The Golden Eagles played their third straight playoff overtime game, and this win was the most important.

Dillon Pless scored the goal in overtime on June 22 to give Vista the CHSAA state title with a 10-9 overtime win over Valor Christian at Englewood High School.

Pless got the game winning goal in OT on June 17 in quarterfinal victory over Fairview and it was Cam Brown who scored in the extra session in a 13-12 semifinal win over Cherry Creek on June 19.

The victory over Valor gave Vista a final record of 10-2 while the Eagles ended the season at 11-2. Valor, which had previously won two Class 4A state titles, finished with an 11-2 record.

Pless’ OT winning goal was his third in the championship contest.

Gunnar Fellows and Griffin Mallory each had three goals for Valor.

Forward Together a state tool for parents, youths Website aims to empower, connect struggling young people with tools, resources

Long before the current behavioral health crisis reached the public spotlight, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment saw a need for more public outreach to help parents and teens.

In collaboration with the Colorado Department of Human Services, the state health department unveiled the Forward Together program in 2020.

As state health-care providers are reporting drastic increases in mental health emergencies among the state’s adolescents, Forward Together works to empower adults to support mental health for teens and youth.

Lena Heilmann, the youth suicide prevention coordinator for the Colorado Department of Health, said Forward Together aims to help parents and their children become more connected.

The website, forwardtogetherco. com, is separated into two sections, one for parents and the other for youth. The site encourages discussion, providing coping

tools and ideas.

Heilmann said for those who feel suicidal, there is help and a way to get past the current crisis.

“When we are talking about suicide, it is a complex issue,” Heilmann said. “There is no one reason. We know that connectiveness is the most powerful, empowering tool. We want to empower young people to identify a situation and make sure they seek support from a trusted adult.”

Forward Together is not about having a one-size-fits-all approach.

There are links for teens feeling alone, having problems with parents, struggling to fit in, in need of encouragement, or feeling depressed.

After clicking on the area that more closely ties with how a person is feeling, Forward Together provides a variety of tools to help the struggling adolescent cope, deal, and plan to get past dark days.

Heilmann said the Forward Together program is a good tool because it is so interactive.

For parents, the site provides ideas, conversation starters and resources on topics ranging from hobbies and conflict to substance abuse and mental health.

As with the youth page, parents can find help to deal with specific issues they are seeing in their children. From working to build better relationships to identifying risky behavior, the site provides tools and tips for parents to connect with their children.

In a new Class 4A classification, Castle View’s remarkable girls playoff surge ended with a 19-5 loss to top seeded Evergreen in the June 23 title contest at Legacy Stadium.

Bella Reece scored six goals for the Cougars (11-2) which raced to a 14-2 lead at halftime over the Sabercats (8-6). Castle View was the No. 10 seed but had notched upset playoff wins over Golden, Aspen and Grand Junction which were higher seeds.

Girls soccer Broomfield defeated Castle View, 3-1, in the June 26 Class 5A championship game held in Colorado Springs.

Boys volleyball Douglas County’s boys volleyball team made history by winning the first boys tournament sanctioned by the CHSAA. The Huskies, which lost only three sets all season, completed an 18-0 campaign with a 3-0 win over Legend in the title match held June 26 at Rock Canyon.

district started a multi-year process to increase employees’ salaries.

“While the order of magnitude of the swing of revenues is just about equal to what we were facing last year, we are in a vastly different position of talking about reinvestment and restoration,” said Chief Financial Officer Kate Kataska at the June 22 meeting.

To address the compensation question, the district set aside a pool of funding to increase employees’ pay to meet a new base salary. If an employee’s salary isn’t at the new minimum, they now are, Kataska said. If an em-

ployee is already within range of the base, their salaries increase by 4%. If an employee is above the maximum, they receive a one-time payment that’s 4% of their total salary.

The new, minimum base salary for general employees is $43,6000 and the maximum is $91,000. For “hard to hire” employees, the range is between $48,100 and $96,300. In the proposed 2021-22 budget that staff presented to the board May 11, the compensation pool was $7.2 million.

However, that increased to $15.7 million in the adopted budget.

Ciancio-Schor commended district staff for their specific work around compensation. “I just want to thank you so much for paying attention to the compensation for teachers and

staff and looking at how that’s going to continue to build,” she said.

The adopted budget had other additions from the proposed budget.

The district will restore a ninth behavior specialist position eliminated with the COVID-19 budget cuts, add two autism coaches, and set aside a $2 million reserve for special education programming.

The adopted budget had more spending than the proposed budget because of unanticipated state funding the district learned it would receive after the Colorado Legislature passed the School Finance Act. State per-pupil funding for DSCD will be $8,607, totaling a $47.4 million increase in state funding from last year.

Another difference between the

proposed and adopted budgets is that the district had a more detailed sense of how to spend certain dollars. Back in May, the district knew it would restore $3.5 million worth of COVID-19 budget cuts made to school-building level spending. By June 22, school principals outlined to the district that they intend to spend that money on substitutes, increasing specials teacher hours and classified staff hours, and instructional technology.

There were many layers to the 2021-22 budget, but it ultimately came together, said Board President David Ray. He said, “Thank goodness we started this discussion back in March because when you present the whole picture, it is exhausting to say the least with all the complexities.”
