If you love live music, musical entertainment, and “all that jazz,” mark your calendars for Evergreen Jazz Festival weekend in Evergreen, Colorado on Friday/July 29 (12noon-11:00pm), Saturday/July 30 (10:00am-10:pm), and Sunday/July 31 (11:00am-6:00pm) Located just about 35 minutes southwest of Denver, the scenic mountain community of Evergreen provides a beautiful idyllic setting for the three-day event. The Evergreen Jazz Festival boasts NO big crowds, NO big stages, and NO big sound systems but it does feature four

distinctive, intimate venues located at Evergreen Elks Lodge #2363 and its Patio, 27972 Iris Drive; Evergreen Christian Church, 27772 Iris Drive; and the Evergreen Lake House, 29612 Upper Bear Creek Road.

“This is our 19th Evergreen Jazz Festival but COVID has sure made it difficult to present. After two postponements we are really excited to be back and looking forward to another outstanding event,” said Jeannie Mann, Evergreen Jazz Festival President.

Mann expressed gratitude to Festival sponsors and over 100 dedicated volunteers who donate their time in positions that range from year-long committee assignments to specific pre-Festival projects to a variety of up-front and behind-the-scenes slots during the Festival itself.

Summertime Plans – Glamping Still Meant Doing the Dishes Our annual family camping trips included dishes, stitches, and cinders.

Ah, the glorious Colorado summer.

Every summer our family would pack up, head out of Evergreen and set camp in another beautiful location. Once loaded, the family station wagon looked like National Lampoon’s Vacation with all our equipment, coolers, and bicycles stuffed in it and on it. We included one big canvas tent for the adults (family that witnessed it nicknamed it ‘Camp Hilton’) and another dome tent for our two kids. By the time we were set up, our bed looked like an Arabian sheik had settled in. Several air mattresses, eggshell foam pads, comforters and two plush sleeping bags zipped together topped it off. With bicycles, a fold-up table, comfy beds, and all the amenities of the KOA campgrounds, we were set for adventure in luxury and style. Little did we know; we were among the early adopters of what is now referred to as “glamping”.

Before these trips we spent hours preparing, packaging and storing meals so that Dad could just grill it up while the

kids rode their bikes. Our family held one camping rule: Everyone had to “pull their weight”. It was the kid’s chore after each meal to take the dishes over to the water station and wash them with the classic sponge with liquid soap in the handle.

Remember those? It was not unusual for the kids to be standing in the wash line and some bemused adult would ask what they were doing. The kids would enthusiastically reply, “Oh, everyone has to pull their own weight in our family, and this is all we have to do!” Other parents in line decided they might not be doing it right, washing their own dishes.

Each year brought us to a new destination in Colorado, and each year we made it a point to experience everything to do and see in the area, from breakfast horseback rides to chuckwagon dinners and scenic gondola rides. We hiked to waterfalls, went rafting, and played games.

On one of these adventures our then 8-year-old son managed to slice open his head (exposing his pearly white skull), requiring quite a few stitches. The next day, we enjoyed a narrow-gauge train ride

through the vistas of southern Colorado.

Fun, right? Except for that night because we got to hear our son’s whining as Dad picked all of the cinders out of his stitches with tweezers.

Another memorable trip included a hike. We learned of a hidden waterfall and decided it would be a great destination! Along the route there was a narrow ten-inch ledge with a 30-foot drop that we all had to skirt across. Well, if this is what we had to do to reach our destination, then so be it! Of course we later saw people on that same ledge using climbing gear to keep their precious children from falling into oblivion. We made it back safe and sound, but no parenting awards were given for accidentally putting our kids in danger and not even realizing it until later!

In spite of – or maybe even because of – these crazy adventures, our entire family looked forward to these camping trips each and every year. They were “electronics-free” and we spent hours together making memories and having fun. We were blessed to be able to enjoy

so many activities and gorgeous hikes that this beautiful state has to offer. When asked, our now-grown kids both agree that these family trips are some of their fondest memories, and they’re planning similar experiences with our grandchildren!

We afforded each of these trips on a strict budget of five hundred dollars (OK, that was in the 1980s). But even today you can have a quality, fun vacation for a low price in Colorado. Patrons will also find opportunities to dance during every musical set, interact and talk with the performers, and/or simply find genuine pleasure in a big jazz experience that will be vividly remembered long after the music is over.

“We felt it was only right to invite the bands that we had to cancel during the pandemic, and, with one exception, they will all be back,” said Ed Danielson, Music Director. “It’s a terrific lineup that I am sure our patrons will enjoy.”

The Festival’s Mission Statement includes the words: “Promote jazz music and live performances with educational programs for both listeners and young performers,” said 20052008 past president Jim Reiners. “It is so important to keep jazz alive year-afteryear through the younger generations.”

Consequently, each year the Education Committee works to satisfy this mission with year round programs focused on special attention given to building interest among young people and helping student musicians. Included in the range of programs and activities over the years have been concerts at many area middle schools and high schools, most notably a series featuring the Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars, giving us young people performing for younger people.

“I’m especially pleased that we will again have a clinic for student musicians, which is scheduled for July 28” said Sandi Simons, Education Committee Chair.

“As in the past, there will be professional instruction on virtually every instrument plus ensemble work. The instructors will be musicians playing at the festival, which means students will be learning from some of the top talents in the world of jazz.”

The Student Musicians Clinic will take place on the Thursday (July 28) of Festival Week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Evergreen Christian Church, 27772 Iris Drive. Evergreen resident and jazz enthusiast Sterling Nelson (1929-2020) had a vision when he and his wife went on a jazz cruise at sea. Although he was not a musician, he appreciated music, especially jazz. The idea of an Evergreen jazz festival struck a chord with Sterling Nelson. Before he ever got off the sea, he told himself that Evergreen needs to have this type of

musical experience.

After that fateful jazz cruise, Sterling dared to dream what some thought was the impossible dream… He spent the next year enlisting the assistance of friends to help him turn his music festival aspiration into an Evergreen community reality. He pitched his idea to Jim Reiners who had a background in advertising and Ted Mann, who had a pulse on the community as the Community Relations Chairman for the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce.

Ted, who passed away in 2015, and his wife Jeannie have always been steadfast advocates of the event. Ted Mann was the first president of the Evergreen Jazz Festival (2002-2005) and Jeannie who is the festival’s current president also served a presidential term in 2012.

The first Evergreen Jazz Festival was held in 2001. At that time, when it all started, many in the jazz world must have thought, “That Colorado altitude has taken its toll on those guys. Start a traditional jazz festival in this era?” But to the amazement of many, that small group of seven dedicated jazz lovers (Sterling Nelson, Jim Reiners, Ted Mann, Dave Burlingame, Hillary Hutson, Wendell Haynes, and Mike Johnson) did just that!

Jim Reiners and musician Mike Johnson (washboard and drums) are still actively involved in the Festival. Johnson and Your Father’s Mustache Band will be performing once again at the 2022 Evergreen Jazz Festival. Mike is one of the original members of this traditional Dixieland jazz band that has been a

mainstay in the Denver jazz scene for more than 40 years.

Come out to Evergreen (Friday-Sunday, July 29-through-July 31), where the venues are hot, and the weekend will be filled with music and musicians that you will like a lot! Enjoy fun times with friends and lots of razzamatazz…and “all that jazz!”
