Piney Wine & Spirits in Kittredge, Not Your Average Bottle Shop
By Jo Ann M. Colton Special to LifestylesPiney Wine & Spirits at 26289 County Hwy 74 in Kittredge, Colorado opened in February, 2021. But if you are thinking that this establishment is just another liquor store doing business in our foothills area, think again!
Because longtime friends and Piney Wine & Spirits co-owners Danielle (Dani) and husband Ryan Rooney, Chad George, and Nathan Turk all share a taste for the fermented juice of grapes as well as other alcoholic products, together they perceived a need for a quality bottle shop in the foothills. ey all agreed that Kittredge was the perfect location for such a business venture. Consequently, the new business was aptly named Piney Wine & Spirits as a tribute to the mountains and pines of

Evergreen and surrounding communities.
Dani Rooney is also the owner of Old Pine Candle Company (manufacturer of candles). Her husband Ryan has a medical eld background. In addition, Chad and Nathan have garnered years of experience in the hospitality industry. However, prior to opening Piney Wine & Spirits none of the four had any retail experience selling goods or services directly to consumers or end-users. Nonetheless, the friends pooled their resources. Working together, it took them about six months to do everything they needed to do so they could open their uniquely di erent neighborhood bottle shop.
“We see our store as more of a boutique wine &

spirits shop because we largely carry wines from wineries that focus on producing small batches of their wines,” said co-owner Dani Rooney. “We also carry the nest cra beers available, and a spirits selection featuring exceptional choices in every category.”
Unlike big box stores or warehouse-type liquor operations, Piney Wine & Spirits not only o ers a mix of products that t the appetite of the local neighborhood, but also it provides personalized service and one-on-one assistance to its customers.
“Chad George and I have gained experience in the hospitality industry working as bartenders at a multitude of bars and restaurants,” said co-owner Nathan Turk who stated that he and Chad are also Certi ed Sommeliers (wine stewards who are trained and are knowledgeable

wine professionals specializing in all aspects of wine service, including wine and food pairing). Further, Nathan Turk and Chad George are graduates of the BAR® 5-DAY Spirits and Mixology Certi cation Program. BAR stands for Beverage Alcohol Resources and the course is considered to be the world’s premiere educational program on spirits and cra cocktails.
Dani Rooney and Nathan Turk agree that what really makes Piney Wine & Spirits stand apart from the competition is their sta , which not only includes multiple Certi ed Sommeliers, but also two spirits experts as well. e entire Piney Wine & Spirits sta is committed to helping every single person who walks through the store’s door nd that perfect bottle, six-pack or case of wine, spirits, or beer. Piney employees enjoy talking to customers about the store’s
products and introducing patrons to new wines and spirits selections that are sure to titillate the taste buds, pleasure the palate, and delight the senses.

So, whether you are having a family or work-related party, planning a wedding, or coordinating a corporate event, Dani and Nathan would love to assist you with your special happening. Let them help you take the guesswork out of how much beer, wine, and spirits you will need to buy for your social or business gathering. A er your event, for a small re-stocking fee, they will gladly accept returns on any product purchased from their store that is unopened and undamaged. Budget-Friendly Outdoor Projects for Any DIYer

(StatePoint) Want to transform your outdoor space while saving money? ere are plenty of hands-on projects you can do yourself to eliminate expensive labor costs. e following ideas can be tailored to your budget and personal preferences:
Install a Party Pad

Make your backyard more fun and functional with a low-maintenance patio for entertaining and relaxing. Based on your budget and experience level, there are a variety of styles and materials to choose from, such as brick, concrete and stone. You’ll also need gravel to create a sturdy foundation.
If you’re building on an existing lawn, clear out the grass and dirt rst and dig an area deep enough, so the new surface will be even with the ground. Once you’ve prepped the ground and poured the gravel, use sand to hold the blocks in place and ll any gaps between the blocks once the layout is complete. Search online for step-by-step installation instructions and use a project calculator to determine the cost.
Increase Seating Capacity

A built-in seating wall near a re pit, pool or patio o ers more places to lounge and adds depth to the space. ere are plenty of DIY-friendly materials to build with, including interlocking concrete blocks, which won’t need to be recut and are heavy
enough to stay in place without cement, or larger, at stones that look more natural and can be laid in various ways.
If you use concrete blocks, add capstones as top piece to give the design a nished look. Watch tutorials online before starting the project for inspiration and to ensure you complete all the necessary steps.
Repair Over Replace
Fix up something old to make it new. If you have an above-ground pool or spa with a slow leak, easily repair it with the highly-rated T-Rex Waterproof Tape. e tape
has a waterproof backing enhanced with R-Flex Technology for greater durability. It’s also UV-resistant, can stretch up to 700% of its original length and is strong enough to be used underwater.
Locate the leak and then measure and cut a piece of tape with scissors (this tape is too tough to tear by hand). Remove the liner from the back and apply it to the crack to form a leak-proof seal. Press down rmly and smooth any creases by hand.
Hide Outdoor Eyesores
A privacy screen is an easy project for

beginner DIYers and will hide unsightly air conditioning units, garbage bins and utility boxes. You’ll need weather-resistant wood slats, like cedar wood, fence posts, a drill, screws and paint or stain.

Use your “eyesore” to determine how tall to make the screen. en, anchor fence posts into the ground and drill your rst slat about an inch above the ground. Continue adding boards all the way up. For air conditioning units, leave space between each slat to ensure proper air circulation. Add a nish—dark for a modern style or clear for a natural look—and enjoy. Give it a Glow
Use lighting to give your backyard a bistro-like atmosphere. Rather than using a drill to hang solar or string lights, use transparent, double-sided T-Rex Clear Mounting Tape to permanently and discreetly decorate.
Whether placing the lights across wooden beams or on brick or vinyl fencing, make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying the tape. Stick one side to the surface and the other to mount the lights. e adhesive will build over time, achieving full strength a er a 24-hour period.
Once you tackle these budget-friendly DIY projects, you’ll be ready to relax in your outdoor oasis.

Call Us For Your Leaking Chimney
Are you seeing water stains on your ceiling or hearing suspicious dripping? Don’t call a roofer- your chimney may very well be the culprit. ere are many parts to a chimney system that are designed to keep water out, but can fail over time. O en, the location of apparent water damage does not reveal the actual location of the source of the leak- so it is time to call a pro!
Our leaky chimney inspection evaluates your entire chimney or chase. Our technicians are certi ed by the Chimney Safety Institute of America to accurately determine where the water is coming in, and how to stop it. ey have the experience and expertise to take on your leaky chimney problems and any other replace or chimney needs you have. We also have industry speci c techniques, such as special ashing for sealing the uneven edge where your chimney meets the roo ine. Put our 25 years of chimney experience in the foothills to work for you and your investment in your home.
Most people are unfamiliar with the parts of a chimney system that can allow water in. e weak points of a chimney vary depending on whether it’s a masonry or factory-built chimney. Parts of your chimney will degrade with time, UV rays from sunlight, hail damage, and the repeated freezing and thawing of a Colorado spring. ere are usually several suspected weak points when there are signs of

•
water intrusion.
First, regardless of the construction of your chimney, a proper chimney cap is your rst line of defense against a leaky chimney. If you look up at your chimney and there isn’t a cap, call us right away! e structure around your ue may be tight but if you’re missing your cap or you have a damaged or improperly sized cap, it allows water straight into the home. Water intrusion from a missing cap can lead to problems in both masonry and factory built chimneys, with repercussions that a ect not just your replace and chimney system but other parts of your home as well. If you have a masonry chimney you may believe that it will last forever, but that is simply not true. Masonry chimneys are susceptible to degradation just like any other material. is degradation happens faster than most people expect with the unpredictable winter and spring weather in Colorado. We see damage to masonry chimneys from rain and hail; however, the freeze/thaw cycle is most destructive, that is why it’s so important to keep water owing o and away from your chimney.
Masonry chimneys are made of ue tiles which are supported by cinder blocks and stone or bricks. ey also have a concrete crown at the top. e concrete crown is designed to be the “lid” to your masonry chimney, it keeps water out and sheds the

water away from the sides of the chimney. Concrete crowns on brick or block chimneys, should have an overhang with a drip edge which prevents water from running down and eroding the mortar joints. If you’re missing a 4-5” concrete slab with an overhang and drip edge atop the masonry, that’s a strong indicator of water intrusion problems. We can pour a new crown for your chimney or apply Crown Coat to seal any cracks you may have in your chimney crown.
When your crown isn’t de ecting water away from the sides of your chimney, water seeps through your mortar joints. is problem becomes even larger when the moisture freezes and expands. Freezing water expansion exerts tremendous pressure on surrounding masonry materials, creating cracks which then allow more water in. As this cycle continues, the damage compounds with each freeze and thaw. Eventually there may be no mortar le at all, allowing rain or snowmelt directly into your home. Our chimney experts can repair water damage to masonry and mortar, keeping your chimney leak free and maintaining the integrity of your home.
If you don’t have a masonry chimney, you’re still at risk of chimney leaks. If you have a framed wooden box, called a “chase”, enclosing your venting system, those materials can also wear out and allow water
into your home. e top of a chase system must have a proper cover, chimney cap, and storm collar. e weakest point of the chase is the sheet metal chase cover. Chase covers are more susceptible to rain and hail than masonry chimneys. Over time, dents form and the cover sags on top, collecting water and rusting through. A new chase cover is sloped from the center with drip edges designed to shed water away from the sides of the chase. If water runs down the sides of your chase, it can enter through gaps in the façade on your chase. Chases are also ashed to the roo ine, and that can be another area water sneaks its way in to wreak havoc on your home.
Damage from a chimney leak only gets worse if it isn’t addressed quickly. is is the ideal time where leaks can be found, investigated, and repaired. With these impressive springtime rains, we have xed more leaky chimneys than ever before!
