New in Town The 2022-2023 Sculpture Walk is Open for Business

Daylight, sunlight, is necessary to it, and for me, its best setting and complement is nature.” Henry Moore, Internationally Celebrated English Artist Sculpture, as part of our natural surroundings, standing amongst the trees, backdropped by mountain peaks, is integral to the culture, a standard part of the everyday landscape. Exceptional in its impact, it becomes an essential presence in a community committed to art and the positive influence it has on our lives. Because it fits so flawlessly into our environment it can hide in plain sight, astounding creativity, enveloped in the common view. It is only when we travel to a place that has not

OF THE MONTH invested in outdoor sculpture as part of the norm that we realize the inherent value of three-dimensional original art in our midst. This belief is at the core of Sculpture Evergreen (SE), a non-profit, completely volunteer organization that has acquired a collection of more than 40 sculptures over the past 28 years. In addition to building a permanent collection, each year SE juries sculpture submissions from around the country, choosing 10 to 12 pieces to bring to Evergreen for one year as part of its annual Sculpture Walk. Every June the chosen artists join SE volunteers to remove the previous year’s sculptures and install new pieces that populate the Sculpture Walk for the following 12

months. This year’s event took place on June 4th. The result was an inspired addition of 11 new sculptures and 2 holdovers from last year, gracing our trails, walkways, and streets for the 2022-2023 Sculpture Walk. A new element of the SE collection is an agreement with Denver Mountain Parks to place sculptures along the walking trail in Bergen Park, with additional sculptures along this trail in Buchanan Park as well as other Evergreen Parks and Recreation District locations such as Bergen Ponds. This new trail features 5 sculptures, with more planned for the future. Nearby, the Center for the Arts Evergreen grounds display sculptures from both the current Walk and the permanent collection, and downtown Evergreen offers a variety of sculptures for viewing and photo opportunities.
