Did your funnel cake intake stay at zero last year? Has it been a while since you’ve danced in anything but pajamas? If you’re among the millions ready to shed some pentup energy as the summer of 2021 dawns, here’s a few events coming back or scaling up this year.

K-9 handler honored by Elizabeth police Officer Frank Hurst’s years of service draw praise BY CHANCY J. GATLIN-ANDERSON SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

South Banner Street in downtown Elizabeth was lined with

police vehicles on May 25 to honor longtime K-9 Officer Frank Hurst and his three hardworking dogs, Radar, Bob and Carline. Hurst was awarded with a police vehicle that was no longer used by the Elizabeth Police Department for his dedication to the department, and his three dogs were sworn in as official police K-9s.

K-9 handler Hurst has been a K-9 handler for over 20 years and has served the Elizabeth Police Department since 2017. In addition to his work with the department, Hurst is also the president and cofounder of the nonprofit organization Bloodhound Man trackers Inc. SEE K-9 HANDLER, P7

First Friday art walks After a hiatus in 2020, the First Friday Art Walk returns to the Art District on Santa Fe on June 4 and continuing the first Friday of every month thereafter. The signature art walk in the Denver area, Santa Fe’s takes visitors into a variety of galleries, studios, lofts and alleys. The District is big, but most of the action is on Santa Fe Drive between 5th and 11th streets. Masks and social distancing still required — for now. Other art walks are in RiNo and on South Pearl Street.
