Pirates celebrate homecoming Week of activities culminates with Englewood’s football win By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com The Englewood High School football team capped the week’s homecoming activities and provided the large crowd a lot to cheer about Sept. 30 as they posted a 35-0 win over rival Sheridan. Homecoming activities during lunchtime and after school were scheduled almost every day of the school week preceding the game. There was a lot of focus on Sept. 28 on the powder puff football game, with girls playing flag football and football players assuming the role of cheerleaders and coaches. After the game, the pep rally was held in the gym and then everyone moved to the practice field for the bonfire. This year a combination of very dry wood helped the fire to leap high in the air when it was lit.
On Sept. 30, the flow of traffic around the area was temporarily disrupted for the homecoming parade. In keeping with tradition, the Pirates Marching Band led the parade and the band was followed by homecoming royalty riding in convertibles, class floats and youth sports floats. Englewood quickly set the tempo for the Sept. 30 football game as they took the kickoff and drove 69 yards in four plays to score a touchdown less than two minutes into the game. The Pirates scored a total of five touchdowns and had three additional touchdowns nullified by penalties. A long-awaited moment came at halftime when the selected members of the royalty were named homecoming king and queen. This year’s king and queen were Joe Hall and Janae Brown. They will retain the titles until the halftime of next year’s homecoming football game. For more on the football game, turn to page 28.
Flames leap high in the air Sept. 28 when the Englewood High School bonfire was lit. The roaring blaze apparently was a result of the bone-dry lumber in the pallets used as fuel for the fire. The flames died down and no damage was done. Courtesy photo

A 33-year-old man died from gunshot wounds in Englewood the night of Oct. 1. The victim has been identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office as Nicholas Lewis, an Englewood resident. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest and his death has been ruled a homicide, the coroner’s office said. Lewis was a chef at the Blackbird Public House, a restaurant in Denver. “Many of you now know that we lost our chef and good friend, Nick Lewis, on Saturday night,” states a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. “Those that knew Nick are having a hard time understanding how such a kind and gentle person could be taken from us in such a violent manner. The loss of Chef Nick leaves a hole in all of our hearts. Rest in peace Chef Nick. We miss you.” On Oct. 1, Englewood police responded to a report of shots fired at about 8:40 p.m. in the 3000 block of South Acoma Street. They found a man lying on the ground who had been shot multiple times, a police department news release stated. He was transported to a local hospital but later died. Citing the ongoing investigation, police said no further information was available.
