Options explored for elementary schools Data being gathered on how to deal with aging buildings
By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com The Englewood School Board held a July 22 work session to continue gathering data and
information on how to deal with the challenges faced in the district’s aging elementary schools and early childhood education facility. During the work session, consultants presented a report listing projected costs to either do major repairs or to rebuild the four elementary schools and the childhood education center.
The detailed analysis stated the cost of remodeling or making additions to the existing buildings would cost about $89 million while the cost of constructing all new elementary schools and a new early childhood education center would cost an estimated $96.8 million. The report from district-hired consultants was presented as the
board continued to follow up on the Facilities Long Range Committee report recommending all the buildings undergo major remodeling or be rebuilt. The committee also recommended the school district seek voter support for a bond issue to raise the money for the projects. The school board has been gathering information and data
about the projects and the possible bond issue since May. Superintendent Wendy Rubin held town hall meetings at each of the elementary schools to discuss the issue and hear comments from residents. The July 22 work session was the latest in the board’s fact-gathering efforts.

Freedom, safety steer helmet debate
Doug Vickery models a popular motorcycle helmet at his motorsports store in Arapahoe County on July 19. Vickery says he has a stock of personal helmets that are “trashed” from his days as a professional racer.
With the city council’s July 18 approval of the subject of the questions, a city-hired firm began calling Englewood residents July 20 and asking them to take about 10 minutes to answer about 20 poll questions. Although poll questions cover a wide variety of issues, such as opinions of community services, a major reason the city decided to have the poll done is to determine whether residents would likely support a ballot issue allowing the city to sell bonds to provide funds to build a new police station.

Brahm Bechtold rides a Harley-Davidson cruiser, a bike he says is made for taking it easy and enjoying the scenery. He and his wife and passenger, Dagmar, say new motorcyclists should wear helmets, but they feel safe without them because they take it slow. “The wind’s in your hair, you’re having fun and just kind of putting along. It’s nothing fast, no tight turns, it’s a lot slower, just enjoying the scenery,” said Bechtold, a Lone Tree resident who has been riding for 20 years. “I’m not looking to cut those corners or do that high acceleration.” In Colorado, where adults are not legally required to wear a helmet, emotions over whether to do so are riding high on both sides as the number of motorcyclist deaths increases. Those who wear them cite safety, while riders who don’t say it’s a matter of personal freedom. Helmets continues on Page 8
