Mastercraft customizes vehicles to do their jobs

By Tom Munds tmunds@coloradocommunitymedia.com The walls of all three buildings echo with the whine of electric drills, the clatter of metal parts and the flash of welders as Mastercraft Truck Equipment technicians modify any size truck or van for the work the owner plans. “Owners bring us vehicles and vans of all different sizes. For us, each job is to modify the vehicle to be fitted for the job that vehicle will be doing,” Mastercraft owner Beth Goddard said. “For example, an owner brings us a van that will be used for equipment deliveries. We work with the owner to determine what we need to do to the inside of the vehicle, so our technicians can go to work installing the shelves or bins to accommodate the items the driver will be delivering.” Mastercraft started 33 years ago in a building in Englewood’s industrial area. When business grew, founders Ed Klinkefus and his wife, Shirley, built the building 2280 W. Cornell Ave., across the Trucks continues on Page 14

Sports Authority has notified the state that the company will close its Englewood headquarters and terminate the jobs of 461 employees at the location on June 3. The company, which is closing down after filing for bankruptcy, made the notification on May 24, as part of a required Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the Colorado Department of Labor. The WARN document was signed by Douglas Garrett, Sports Authority interim vice president. It stated: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Sports Authority must reduce its business operations and close certain operations of the Englewood Store Support Center on an accelerated schedule.” Closing continues on Page 5

Whether or not TriCity Academy will be granted authority to establish a charter school in Englewood rests in the hands of the Colorado Charter School Institute, and the institute is scheduled to announce its decision June 14. The Colorado Charter School Institute, an independent agency of the Colorado Department of Education, is the state’s only non-school-district organization authorized to approve a charter school application
