Initially announced in September 2020, the U.S. Forest Service plans to undergo an improvement plan to the Loveland Ski area that will add some changes to some well-known ski trails and expand the parking lot. Loveland Ski Area has operated on the Arapaho National Forest through a special use permit since 1937. The project will allow enhancements on the well-loved green trails Zig Zag and Boomerang. The enhancement will make for two new skiing trails just adjacent to Boomerang. The improvement plan also includes more parking, with 500 new parking spots near the base of Loveland Valley. As part of that process USFS gave the public a 30-day objection period. USFS received one objection that pointed out that a permitted Nordic trail intersected with the proposed parking lot. The forest administrators and the objector eventually agreed on terms of rerouting the trail. The full environmental assessment and draft decision are available at: www.fs.usda.gov/goto/LovelandSkiProjects The improvement project work could occur as early as this summer.

Most completed the 5K circuit, which started at the George Rowe Museum, went down Main Street, up the 7:30 Mine Trail, back down to the museum, and then looped around town again. The event was a draw for people from all over Clear Creek and beyond. Glenn Bakken, who owns property in Grand County but mostly lives in
Florida and Oregon, said a friend who was also participating told him about the event. So, he decided to visit Silver Plume for the first time. While the second mile up the 7:30 Mine Trail was difficult, Bakken said he appreciated seeing all the town’s historic buildings. Dumont’s Robin Baker also enSEE FUN RUN, P22
