Idaho Springs keeping paid parking downtown until 2024 County residents, employees now further limited

When one of their teachers and her neighbors needed help preparing their new yards, students Evergreen Country Day School were more than willing to help.

The school’s 16 seventh-graders took a field trip to Empire’s

At its May 24 meeting, the City Council unanimously extended its agreement with Interstate Parking Company of Colorado until June 1, 2024.

Idaho Springs and the company will continue to split revenues 50-50.

The city also updated its downtown parking plan to further limit employee parking, reduce free parking for county residents and expand paid parking to spaces that were underutilized.

Those changes will be going into effect this week and Interstate Parking will begin “soft enforcement,” as Assistant City Administrator Jonathan Cain described it, to ensure that people are aware of all the changes first.

POLICE BLOTTER: CRIME CALLS FROM MAY 17-23 Monday, May 17 — Idaho Springs officers responded to a 911 hang-up in the 400 block of Soda Creek Road. A woman reportedly called 911 screaming and dispatchers heard her asking a man why he wouldn’t let her leave the residence, however they could not determine the exact location of the call. So, officers began checking various locations to try and find the caller. Eventually, officers contacted the people involved on Pine Slope Road, and the man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

Wednesday, May 19 — While driving on eastbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 242, an Idaho Springs officer noted a vehicle reportedly speeding at 96 mph.

During a traffic stop, the driver reportedly showed signs of being intoxicated, and was ultimately arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Thursday, May 20 — Georgetown police responded to a suspicious-activity call in the 1500 block of Argentine Street. A woman was contacted after acting suspiciously in the store’s restroom, and she was found to have an active warrant for her arrest out of another jurisdiction. She was taken into custody and booked into the county jail.

Friday, May 21 — Idaho Springs officers were dispatched to a section of Clear Creek along Riverside Drive for a report of juveniles possibly using narcotics. Officers found two women matching the descriptions given, and determined one of them had urinated in public along the creek and they were in possession of open alcoholic containers. One suspect was issued a citation for urinating in public and they were both given warnings for the open containers.

Friday, May 21 — Georgetown

police received a call about a suicidal person along Rose Street.

Officers responded and contacted the individual. Medical personnel treated the individual, who was ultimately transported to a hospital for further help.

Friday, May 21 — Georgetown police identified and recovered a vehicle that was stolen from Adams County and abandoned in town.

The vehicle was processed for evidence and impounded pending further investigation. The same day, another vehicle was reported stolen from the 1700 block of Main Street. There is a suspect description, but the vehicle has not been located nor the suspect identified. The investigation is ongoing, and GPD is exploring whether the two incidents are related.

Saturday, May 22 — Idaho Springs officers were dispatched to an assault-in-progress call in the 1800 block of Miner Street. Officers

found three intoxicated adults who described being involved in an argument. One of them was a visitor to the residence and had reportedly starting breaking items because she was unable to find her purse.

She was asked to leave and was taken to a local hospital due to her level of intoxication. Later, everyone declined to pursue charges.

Sunday, May 23 — Idaho Springs officers responded to a road rage incident involving a gun along Interstate 70 near mile marker 241. The reporting party stated a blue Subaru cut him off along Colorado Boulevard, and when the two vehicles entered I-70 eastbound, the suspect reportedly pointed a gun at the reporting party’s vehicle. ISPD notified Colorado State Patrol and Jeffco Sheriff’s office of the vehicle description, but it was not located or identified. The case is closed until further leads develop.

Taste of Colorado moving to new locations Festival will span all of downtown during Labor Day weekend

For years, every Labor Day weekend, A Taste of Colorado brought dozens of booths to Civic Center Park, serving up food from local Colorado restaurants. The free event brought hundreds of thousands of visitors to enjoy live music and art and to sample some of the best food the state has to offer.

Last year, the pandemic forced organizers to cancel the festival, marking the first time in almost 40 years that it didn’t operate. Now, Taste is returning, though it will look a bit different from festivals past.

The Downtown Denver Partnership announced that Taste will return to Denver over Labor Day weekend, but this year’s version will be held downtown, where it will host attractions, events and food tastings out of restaurants and venues scattered around the area.

“Taste of Colorado is a well-loved tradition that spans generations,” said Sharon Alton, vice president of downtown experience at the Downtown Denver Partnership.

“We’re proud to bring Taste back as we emerge from the pandemic, this year in a new format that will be a true celebration of our city’s culture and everything that our city’s artists, musicians, and restaurateurs have to offer. LEO awards recognize a duo of outstanding officers STAFF REPORT

Local law enforcement officers and citizens were recognized last week for their contributions to public safety.

The Clear Creek Sheriff’s Office and local police departments hosted the annual Lyle Wohlers luncheon and awards ceremony on May 27 at Blackstone Rivers Ranch, and recognized the 2019 and 2020 award winners given that last year’s luncheon was canceled because of the pandemic.

Among those honored at the ceremony was Idaho Springs Corporal Ryan Frost, who won the 2019 Officer of the Year. Frost saved a choking infant in July 2019.

Empire Officer Andrew Lorenz and Empire resident Robert Wise were also honored, receiving the 2020 Officer of the Year and 2020 Citizen of the Year awards, respectively.

The annual luncheon is named for State Patrolman Lyle F. Wohlers, who was killed during a traffic stop in 1992.

Because the city was still incorporating these changes into its parking map as of the Courant’s print deadline, Cain recommended residents and users visit the city website to see the updated map.

What changes Among the changes outlined in the new parking plan: Downtown employees registered with Interstate Parking will only be able to park for free in certain spaces along Colorado Boulevard, in the resource center lot and the parkand-ride lot — also called the Bustang lot — at 13th Avenue and Idaho Street.

If they park anywhere else, they will have to pay.

County residents who are registered with Interstate Parking can still park for free up to three hours in the main lots. If they stay over three hours, they will have to pay. They can also park in the resource center and Bustang lots without limitation or along Colorado Boulevard in the spaces that are signed for paid parking.

Several underutilized

spaces along Colorado Boulevard that were either residential spaces or for 30-minute spaces will now be paid parking. Additionally, the spaces on the north side of Carlson Elementary will be for teachers during the school year and paid parking during the summer.

Cain clarified that city residents can still park for free anywhere with no time limits.

“Those main lots are very constrained,” he said of limiting employee parking.

“The employee vehicles there could be a quarter of the lot in the summer.”

Staff had also proposed requiring those city residents, county residents and employees to renew their registration with Interstate Parking annually, however the councilmen said it should be every two years.

Mayor Mike Hillman and Councilman Bob Bowland thanked Interstate for being very patient with the city as it ramped up this paid parking system, and for being willing to work with them through all the challenges.

“They have become a part of our community, making sure things are running like they should be,” Hillman said of Interstate Parking, adding that he’s looking forward to continuing the partnership.

There, they prepared the soil and put down sod at three houses, including the future home of ECDS teacher Coral Herrin.

Herrin, who currently lives in Arvada, has taught at ECDS for several years, most recently as a third-grade teacher. So, having the students take a field trip to her house and help set up her yard was incredibly meaningful, she described.

“I had some of these students in firstgrade,” she said. “ … They’re working hard.”

Seventh-grader Ronan Pocock, one of Herrin’s learning support students, said he appreciated the opportunity to see his teacher’s future home and take a break from school.

“I love being out in the mountains,” Ronan said. “It’s a beautiful spot.”

Ronan and classmate Callen Dickerson described Herrin as extremely nice, funny, creative and fun to be around.

Ronan commented that she’s serious but in a good way, while Callen said, “Her bark is worse than her bite.”

Both boys felt honored to help Herrin and her new neighbors in Empire.

Callen, who also had Herrin as a learning support teacher, said she’s his favorite teacher and he hasn’t gotten to see her much this year because of COVID-19 precautions.

So, volunteering at her new house meant a lot to him.

Fellow seventh-grader Gabby Peonio, who was finishing her first year at ECDS, said she’s doesn’t know Herrin as well as her classmates, but appreciated the opportunity

to help all the same.

She enjoys volunteering, saying, “It’s an honor that they asked us to come out and help.”

Additionally, Gabby said the May 21 trek to Empire marked her first time going on a field trip, explaining how her previous school never had any. So, she greatly appreciated the chance to work outside the school and volunteer.

The idea behind the field trip was to help students learn the spirit of giving back and have that tangible experience, middle school teacher Victoria Hutchen said.

While it’s good to help others in general, having that connection between the students and Herrin made it all the more memorable.

“They can see the progress and feel that they’re making a difference for someone they know,” she continued. “Coral has been in so many of their lives for so many years.”

Thanks to the students and other volunteers’ hard work, Herrin and her family are set to move into their new Empire home mid-July, she said. Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity has been wonderful to work with, and she appreciated the organization’s flexibility whenever problems came up.

Because of her teacher schedule, Herrin hasn’t been able to work on her own home much and has been spending her sweat equity hours at Habitat’s resale store instead.

Thus, spending a beautiful Friday working on her future yard with her students was very special, she said, adding, “It’s amazing that they want to help me out.”

Have you found what you are looking for?

Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For - Song by U2 Most of us are probably familiar with this song by U2, if not, I highly recommend giving WINNING it a listen. This WORDS song popped into my head recently as I was on vacation. Yes, vacation, my first trip in 14 months. As I walked along the beach, I was scanning the sand for unusual shells, sea Michael Norton glass, or unique pieces of coral. Something I have always done when visiting a beach.

Over the years I have trained my eyes to quickly identify shells of unique shape and color. On most walks along the shoreline, I will automatically find little treasures where the sea meets the sand. Sometimes I am very casual about it and a shell or piece of coral happens to jump right out at me. And other times, I am heads down in full search mode,

looking for exactly the right size, color, or shaped shell for my collection.

Well on my recent trip, I found myself looking but not finding, searching but not really seeing anything. After a couple of days of coming up empty, I thought about why this could be happening. And I realized that my mind had not caught up with being on vacation yet. I realized I wasn’t quite relaxed enough to see anything popping out at me, and I wasn’t focused enough to be intentional about seeking out something special. I found myself in a weird state of work and vacation limbo.

Have you ever been there? Are you there right now? Maybe it’s not searching for seashells, sea glass, or coral, but searching for something, something you aren’t quite sure about or haven’t clearly defined yet. And since what we are searching for isn’t always completely obvious, it becomes harder and harder to find. Or as the U2 song goes, “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”

We search for understanding

and we find confusion instead.

We look for peace only to see conflict all around us. We want answers but only seem to come up with more questions. More than anything we seek the truth and become frustrated by half-truths or lies. We really do want to find the good in others and yet we confront disappointment time and time again.

What I have found in each one of these scenarios is that we don’t find what we are looking for because we have placed ourselves in “understanding-peacehope-truth-good” limbo. When our heart and mind are in a good space, we would tend to see everything around us that is positive whether we are searching for it or not. And when we are aligned mentally, physically, and spiritually, we have the ability to become laser-focused, seeing exactly what we set out to see. Not just what we want to see, but what we are intentionally looking for when it comes to understanding, peace, hope, truth, and goodness.

When we still can’t find what it is that we are looking for, we may

need a quick “checkup from the neck up,” as Zig Ziglar used to say. We may need to snap ourselves out of that weird state of limbo, somewhere between not being relaxed enough to trust our instincts and not being confident enough to pursue what it is that we want the most. Ambiguity hinders us wherever we are, at work, at home, taking a hike, or walking along the beach looking for the perfect seashell.

Have you found what you are looking for yet? Have you identified whether it is because you are in limbo and not allowing yourself to be relaxed enough to come upon it naturally? In particular, there is a focus on significant health disparities affecting women of color.

About 700 women still die each year in the U.S. from complications due to pregnancy. American Indian, Alaska Native and Black women are two to three times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than white women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two out of three pregnancyrelated deaths are considered preventable.

It’s a good practice to consult your doctor about contraceptives and sexually transmitted infections. Testing for cervical cancer will help detect the high-risk human papillomavirus virus which can lead to cervical cancer. And, mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat and before it’s big enough to feel or cause symptoms.

Some diseases such as diabetes are not so easily detected without medical tests. Women can develop diabetes during pregnancy known as gestational diabetes. Others may want to be screened for diabetes mellitus, a group of diseases that affect

how your body uses blood sugar, after pregnancy.

Women are twice as likely as men to experience depression, with some experiencing mood symptoms related to hormone changes during puberty, pregnancy and perimenopause. Anxiety screenings may also be appropriate given the high levels of anxiety disorders pregnant or postpartum women experience, as well as women who may be victims of domestic violence.

As I noted earlier, women have a harder time quitting smoking than men because they metabolize nicotine, the addictive ingredient in tobacco, faster than men. Metabolism differences may explain why nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches or gum, work better in men than women.

Knee injuries, such as ACL tears, are more likely to occur in women and girls while playing sports. This difference is due to aspects of a woman’s anatomy.

And, because there may be differences in symptoms of coronary artery disease and heart attack between women and men, the results of

For women aged 50 and continuing to age 75, there are additional health concerns: • Colorectal cancer screenings are encouraged.

• And osteoporosis is more common because they have less bone mass than men and can experience more bone loss during hormonal changes at menopause.

It’s also very important to be attentive to mental health, including managing stress and getting enough sleep, getting active and attending regular checkups and well-women visits with a primary care physician or advanced care practitioner.

Amidst all of these medical warnings and concerns, there is good news.

Women can begin and achieve better health at any age or life circumstances. Understanding these key women’s health issues is an important step on the way to better health.

IDAHO SPRINGS BRIEFS EV charging stations approved The Idaho Springs City Council is allowing ChargePoint to install four electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot at the corner of 13th Avenue and Idaho Street, cattycorner from the rec center.

The council unanimously approved an agreement with the company at its May 24 meeting, and ChargePoint representatives said the stations will be installed soon.

Depending on demand, the city and ChargePoint may expand to eight spaces in that lot.

ChargePoint has agreed to pay $300 per licensed space per month, totaling $7,200 in revenue in the first year, according to city staff, and that amount will increase 5% every year going forward.

In addition to ChargePoint’s payment, those using the spots will also have to pay for parking through Interstate Parking Co. of Colorado unless already exempt based on local residency and/or employment.

“We’re excited about getting this done,” Mayor Mike Hillman said during the meeting.

City Hall reopens Idaho Springs’ City Hall is now reopen, and in-person city meetings will resume soon.

During the May 24 City Council work session, Municipal Judge Michael Goodbee asked council

whether the municipal court should host jury trials in-person this summer. Goodbee said the first trial is scheduled for July, adding, “I think we can safely convene people in there, but it’s your call.”

Mayor Mike Hillman felt that with the countywide mask order lifted and the state order relaxed, City Hall should reopen to the public soon, including for jury trials.

If need be, he said the city still has the right to require masks inside the building.

“Let’s get back into City Hall,” Councilman Jim Clark said.

Goodbee noted that he will continue to do virtual arraignments for the next three months because it’s cut down on failures to appear.

“People seem to be more willing to come to court if they don’t have to come to court,” he continued.

Later, during the council’s regular meeting, Hillman asked the council members whether they were comfortable resuming in-person meetings, and they agreed that it was time.

Riverbend units cleared to open The Riverbend workforce housing complex has received its certificate of occupancy, according to Mayor Mike Hillman.

The complex in the 2500 block of Colorado Boulevard has 47 units between two buildings, and was funded by tax credits from the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority. The property formerly held 15 mobile homes, and those residents were eligible for the new

units.

During the May 24 City Council meeting, Hillman announced that 21 of the 47 units will be occupied by current Idaho Springs residents.

This includes former mobile home residents and those who have been living in local hotels.

Of the other units’ occupants, Hillman reported that 10 are from Denver, a couple are from George-

town, one is from Empire, one is from Evergreen, and some are from out of state.

Dozens remain on the waiting list, he added.

“Some of (these new residents) are seeing better quality of life than they were living in hotels,” Hillman continued. “ ... We should be proud that we made this happen in Idaho Springs.”

Evergreen businesses are on a fishing expedition — trying to find the right bait to lure in a great catch of new employees.

Some are offering wages in the range of $15 to $20 an hour, hoping that boosting incentives will bring in the workers they need, especially with more people frequenting area businesses this summer. It’s not only restaurants looking for workers; banks, insurance agents, Henderson Mine and more are searching for help and beginning to get a bit desperate.

Representatives from 22 area businesses joined together at a jobs fair at El Rancho Brewing on May 24 to find much-needed employees. They spoke with 22 job seekers, and while that was a respectable number, the need is much greater.

Nancy Judge, president of the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce, said the business owners couldn’t wait any longer — not even until public schools’ summer break — because they need to hire now.

Businesses are frustrated because they can’t find help yet hopeful that 2021 will be a prosperous year after a devastating 2020.

Even Climax Molybdenum Mine, which operates the Henderson Mine in Empire, is in desperate need of 40 tradespeople and laborers, according to engineer Talon Choate, who says the company offers travel stipends for those driving longer distances to get to work. Employment needs ebb and flow, he said, most of the time in conjunction with the economy.

The eight restaurants represented at the jobs fair are looking for workers in every position, noting that they came close to shutting down during the pandemic when they were only allowed to offer carry-out services.

Now, with downtown Evergreen packed on the weekends as the weather improves, they are busy but with insufficient staff to serve all of those customers.

“We survived (the pandemic),” said Whitney Carloss with Parkside Café in Bergen Park, “but now we’re gearing up for the summer. It’s tough everywhere (to find employees), but especially in the mountains.”

Radical ideas to help alleviate Colorado’s high-country housing crisis Midsummer strike pondered in Crested Butte, while Frisco leaders weigh a first-ever emergency declaration

Jill Voyles knew the first year would not be easy. But it would be worth it for her and husband, Brendan McClarney, to move their three daughters to Crested Butte from St. Louis, Missouri.

Then right after they arrived last spring, everything shut down.

McClarney’s job as a construction project manager evaporated.

So did Voyles’ work as a wellness professional. McClarney worked at a restaurant for a while but went back to St. Louis for work, sending his family money to pay rent in the Gunnison County resort town. Then their landlord told them he was moving into the home they were renting.

They found a temporary place for a few weeks but Voyles and McClarney are making back-up plans to move their family into tents.

“I would never have thought this could happen. Right before the pandemic I was planning to open a studio and my business was thriving. We came here to protect our kids from what was going on in the big city, where we had gunshots just a couple blocks from our house,” Voyles said. “I knew it would be hard to make it work here but I never imagined it would be this hard.”

About 70% of their earnings go toward rent right now. Maybe if they move into tents for the summer they can save enough to pay the security deposit, first and last month’s rent on a place for the fall and winter.

“Maybe. We are competing with people who can buy anything,” Voyles said. “How can you support the foundation of the town if workers are leaving because they can’t afford to be here? There’s a growing separation right now.

services and we need a decent quality of life with places to live.”

As buyers continue to snatch up homes across Colorado,an unprecedented housing crisis is unfolding. Workers are losing their rental homes as new owners or investors pay record prices move in or convert them to their work-from-anywhere homes or short-term vacation investment homes. At least two communities are pondering radical strategies to slow the rapid shifts in housing that many see threatening the vitality and even existence of communities that rely on armies of workers.

In Frisco, leaders are pondering a first-ever official emergency declaration as they liken the unfolding housing crisis to a devastating flood or wildfire. In Crested Butte, workers are whispering about a strike in the middle of the busy summer season.

“An emergency that is threatening our lifestyles” Brianne Snow provided groceries to 65 families who visited her Family and Intercultural Resource Center’s food pantry in Silverthorne on Wednesday. Many of them asked for supplies that could last the week in their car.

“They were there for food, but they were desperate for housing,” said the executive director of the Summit County center. “There is nowhere for them to go. They are living with their families in their cars at trailheads and they are really scared. It is just so devastating.”

The resource center has given local families more than $2.5 million in rent assistance in the last year and another $500,000 for food. It’s not enough.

“This is a bigger problem than just affordability. We do have enough homes to put people in,” Snow said. “We wanted a diverse economy with these wealthier, work-from-anywhere residents.

Well now we have one. And now we can’t support it.”

The lack of attainable housing has reached crisis levels in Colorado’s high country.

“It is an emergency that is threatening our lifestyles, our local businesses and our economy,” said Frisco Mayor Hunter

Mortensen. “It’s the same as if we are threatened by flood or fire.”

Mortensen is pushing his town council to approve Colorado’s first official emergency declaration around housing. The formal declaration — a mechanism typically used for natural disasters, or, more recently, a pandemic — could possibly open avenues for federal funding as well as streamline Frisco’s budget policies to allow for speedy re-allocations of funds toward housing. (Colorado’s Democrat lawmakers on Monday ranked affordable housing among the top three priorities in their plan for spending $3.8 billion in federal coronavirus stimulus money given to Colorado, with as much as $150 million heading toward housing projects in the next month.)

“Everyone in Colorado is complaining about this problem. Business owners. Employers. Employees. Visitors. Local governments.

Everyone. And they all put it back on the government to find a way to fix it,” Mortsensen said. “It’s time to fill the sandbags for the coming flood and the government cannot do that alone. We need a community wide effort and an emergency declaration is the first step in getting everyone we can to help.”

Occupy Crested Butte Will Dujardin moved to Crested Butte in 2008 to be a ski coach. He found a house in town to rent and three-and-a-half years ago won a seat on the Crested Butte Town Council, promising to advocate for affordable housing.

His landlord wants to move back into the house to renovate for a sale.

He’s looking for a temporary place to rent with his girlfriend somewhere in town, but he’s unsure about his long-term viability in a community where home prices have set records every month so far this year, reaching an average price of $1.4 million.

“It just doesn’t seem financially responsible for me to even try to stay here long-term,” he said as he prepped a house for a paint job. “I can’t afford to put myself at that kind of risk.”

Dujardin’s work on the council includes helping create a short-

term rental tax to support more affordable housing. He supports plans for a 156-unit affordable housing complex — whittled down from 240 units after years of negotiations between the developer and the town — that is mired in contention over the size of the project’s parking lot.

That high-density apartment project wasn’t ideal, he said, but it’s something. He sees a big gap in options for renters who fall pretty close to the region’s median income but are far away from being able to afford market prices in a town where the median price is more than $1.4 million and climbing rapidly.

But the problem, he said, is more about availability than affordability. People of just about all incomes are fighting for spots to live in the East River Valley.

Dujardin supports some radical moves. He advocates for a tax on vacation homes that are left empty for most of the year. Maybe that additional tax revenue could help local workers cover skyrocketing rents or pay a down payment on a home, he said. Whatever the plan, it needs to happen fast, he said, noting that since he joined the town council, the price for a typical home in the town has more than doubled.

Maggie Long’s murder now considered a hate crime Law enforcement hopes more tips will help solve the case

Now that the FBI has elevated the murder of Bailey teen Maggie Long to a potential hate crime, more manpower will be available to find her killers in a crime that rocked the 285 Corridor, according to Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw. “(The FBI) is assigning another analyst, and that will help,” McGraw said, noting that in addition to more investigators working the case, the status shift gets more media attention, which usually generates more tips.

The FBI along with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Park County Sheriff’s Office continue to follow up leads in the Dec. 1, 2017, murder of Long, who was 17 at the time.

Her family’s home was set on fire and a number of items were stolen, including guns, ammunition, a safe and jade figurines.

The FBI defines a hate crime as “a criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by the offender’s bias against a religion, disability, ethnicity/national origin, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity,” according to information supplied by Leslie Cook with the FBI Denver media team.

“The FBI is committed to comclose their shops, he said. There seems to be more local support for an “empty home fee,” which would tax second homeowners who leave their mansions in town unoccupied except for a few weeks a year.

“It’s sad because the only thing they are building in this town right now are mega-mansions. We don’t want to alienate those owners but if they want to be a bigger part of this community, we need their help to create a housing fund,” Rankin said as he prepared lunches for waiting customers at Butte Bagels.

Rankin has lost employees due to a lack of housing. A worker strike could show visitors, second-homeowners and local leaders what Crested Butte could look like in five years when workers can’t live in the town, he said.

“I wonder if people really are grasping that,” Rankin said. “We need our community — really every community across Colorado — to rise up and gather together and take care of this. This isn’t a

McGraw said Long’s murder is one of those cases that law enforcement never stops investigating.

“I have to say that this case has been one of those cases that is never put into a filing cabinet,” he said. “Leads come in, are checked, don’t pan out, and we continue to go on. I can tell you that the amount of work that has gone into the case is tremendous. In the 3-1/2 years since she was killed, there’s been just a huge number of hours, and most of it has been behind the scenes.”

He said his department got a lead from Oklahoma a few months ago and sent two detectives to investigate, but it turned out to be unrelated to Long’s murder.

“There’s nothing definite out there right now,” he said, adding that officials believe she walked in on a burglary-in-progress at her home.

“I never knew her, but from what I’ve heard from people in the area, she was a sweet, sweet girl, and people adored her,” McGraw said. “She was just a great kid. For something like this to happen is just horrible for our community.”

The Long family recently contributed additional funds to what is now a $75,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any individual responsible for Long’s murder.

The decades-long lack of affordable housing became a critical issue as early as 1994, when Telluride town leaders passed a law that required developers to build affordable housing for some of the new workers their projects would create.After a developer sued, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that forcing developers to build units for renting below market rates was a form of rent control prohibited by state law in 1981.

Clear Creek girls soccer falls 10-0 to top-ranked Dawson

After Clear Creek’s coaches and players categorized their May 13 victory over Twin Peaks as an ugly win, they described their defeat against Dawson last week was the opposite — a good loss.

On May 26, the Golddiggers hosted the No. 2 ranked 2A team in the state, and within the first minute of the game the Diggers could see why. Clear Creek had to play defense almost the entire game and ultimately lost 10-0. It was the 3-1-1 Diggers’ first loss of the season.

Even with the loss, Clear Creek remains in second in the league after Dawson.

The Mustangs, who have won all six of their prior games by shutting out their opponents in the first half, scored four goals within the first 10 minutes of play.

Their offense couldn’t be contained thanks to their size and speed. They controlled possession for the bulk of the game.

Clear Creek’s offense only made it onto the Mustangs’ side of the field a few times, with junior Breyda Spinner attempting a shot-on-goal that barely missed.

Dawson scored its ninth goal shortly before the horn sounded for halftime, and Clear Creek survived to see

the second half — something no other team has done against Dawson this season, Coach Dan Ebert pointed out.

The second half only lasted a few minutes, as Dawson’s 10th goal invoked a mercy rule and ended the game early.

“I think we played a really good game, considering it’s Dawson,” junior defender Oriana Hoogendoorn said.

“I’m proud we made it to the second half.”

Goalie Annie Galke said playing defense the entire game was a new experience for this team, and it’s something the players will have to work on.

Galke, a recent graduate, said this was the first time this season someone scored on her.

After one goal partway through the game, Spinner came over to Galke and reminded her that the Golddiggers had anticipated this.

Galke said she was grateful for the reassurance in that moment, because she wasn’t sure whether her teammates were angry at her for letting so many goals go through.

Ultimately, Ebert felt his team played well and he was proud of their competitiveness.

However, he and Hoogendoorn felt the Golddiggers panicked too much throughout the game once they saw how much better the Mustangs were at ball control and passing. Clear Creek also got fatigued pretty quickly, as players were SEE SOCCER, P15

Ebert hoped this kind of performance would only further motivate his players through Clear Creek’s remaining five games. Hoogendoorn and Galke said they believe the team should work more on defense.

“We haven’t had to worry about it much until this game,” Galke continued.

As the shortened season nears its end, Dawson will advance to the 2A playoffs, Ebert said, explaining how the field was downsized from 12 to eight teams this year. There are a few at-large bids available, so Clear Creek have a shot if it remains second in the league behind Dawson.

Whatever the outcome, Hoogendoorn and Galke said they have fun playing and will try to win the remaining games. They encouraged everyone to travel for the June 3 game at Denver Christian when the Golddiggers will take on another highly ranked 2A team.

Youth mental health services in crisis As youth suicide attempts rise, mental health experts declare state of emergency

With suicide attempts on the rise, and emergency rooms statewide filling up with psychiatric patients, Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) declared a state of emergency last week.

During a special round-table discussion on May 25, health experts said they are seeing dramatic increases in young patients suffering from depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation and social disconnectedness. Participants in the panel agreed hospital beds are filling up, resources are running low and more help from the county, state and federal levels are needed.

According to statistics provided in the hour-long discussion, the leading cause of death for children and young adults, starting at age 10, is suicide in Colorado. According to 2021 data from Mental Health America, Colorado ranks 42nd in youth mental health services.

CHC has hospitals and services throughout the Denver metro area, including locations in Arapahoe, Jefferson, Douglas, Denver and Adams counties.

campus in Aurora, the 52-bed emergency department is now overrun with youths in crisis. Emergency visits went up 90% in April compared to the same normal time in 2019.

In declaring a pediatric mental health state of emergency, CEO Jena Hausmann said CHC has worked more than decade to expand facilities, programs, and beds to serve mental/ behavioral health issues for children and teenagers. However, she noted, it is not enough with the continual increase in patients starting in 2020 and continuing at an even faster pace in 2021.

emergency departments and inpatient pediatric units overrun with kids attempting suicide and suffering from other major mental-health illness,” Hausmann said. “The current system is unsustainable, and it is hurting our children. Our children need us to rally together.”

Dr. Janna Glover, CHC director of psychology training, said even though society is seeing COVID issues improve, the impacts on chil-

dren and teenagers are going to continue.

“Kids have dealt with chronic stress in the past year that a has interrupted their development and education,” she said. “Now, kids are asked to get back to life again and they feel completely unprepared. They are burnt out and they feel so behind that they do not know how to catch up. They feel a sense of hopelessness.”

Glover said hopelessness is the top predictor of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.

Through tears, David Brumbaugh, the CHC chief medical officer, said some of the cases hit too close to home. Brumbaugh said he had a ninth-grade patient who attempted suicide after failing to make the baseball team. Brumbaugh said his own son is in ninth grade and plays baseball.

Brumbaugh said in his 20 years of treating pediatric patients, he has never seen such a high demand for mental health services. The stress on the system started about 15 months ago, Brumbaugh said, and the last three to four months have been even worse.

“Our kids have run out of resilience,” he said. “We are seeing kids who were largely functional and now the floor is falling out. They are attempting suicide.”

DRCOG prescribes Nymbl at-home balance training Clear Creek 60+ offered free access to fall prevention program

On May 3, the Denver Regional Council of Governments announced a partnership with Nymbl Science, the makers of a fall prevention app for older adults, that will offer free enrollment in the app’s balance training program for 5,000 adults aged 60 and up in 10 nearby counties.

Older adults in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Clear Creek, Douglas, Gilpin and Jefferson counties, the City and County of Denver, the City and County of Broomfield and southwest Weld County can enroll in the program free of charge through June 30 by downloading the Nymbl app or visiting co.fallsfree.com.

Nymbl already has a partnership with the Arvada Fire Protection District, which reported a 35% decrease in fall-related EMS calls in Nymbl participants in 2020, a year that saw the Coronavirus pandemic increase isolation and inactivity, resulting in a 30-50% increase in fall rates among older adults in Colorado, according to Nymbl Public Relations Consultant Sari Winston.

Dr. Nathan Estrada, Nymbl’s vice president of clinical, was a physical therapist before joining the Nymbl team. He said he took the position with Nymbl because he believed it offered older Estrada adults a better option for balance training than traditional methods.

“My research interest was based on ‘Why do we need to keep seeing the same older adults over and presenting with behavioral health issues. Besides treating patients who have attempted suicide, hospitals are seeing an increase in patients suffering from eating disorders and presenting with symptoms associated with substance abuse.

Many of the health experts said the situation is going to require partnerships with county governments, health departments, school districts and state and federal agencies.

Heidi Baskfield, CHC vice president of population health and advocacy, said it is going to require more funding. It is going to require more work to reach children or teens in crisis before they attempt suicide and put pressure on the healthcare system, she said.

And then I was pitched by Nymbl and we just went `Instead of asking people to do balance training, what if we just gave them a fun game that happened to improve their balance?’”

focus must be placed on prevention, where outpatient services intercept children in crisis long before they attempt suicide.

Preventive services are also in crisis. Over the last few years, Baskfield said 47 facilities across the state closed. These are facilities that have traditionally provided mental health care to children and teenagers.

“At a time when we are seeing volumes increase, severity increase and overall need, the system that is meant to be in place to serve these kids not only does not exist but those attempting to do this work are underwater and overwhelmed,” Baskfield said.

While not present during the round-table discussion, Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas said the county wants to be the example other communities across the

state can follow.

In 2017, Douglas County started investing more than $1 million per year into mental-health services, creating a Community Response Team.

In 2019, the county created the Youth Community Response Team after more than 40% of the calls for help were for residents 19 and younger.

Thomas said the partnerships health experts are calling for can work statewide and the CRT program is proof. Douglas County suicide rates are decreasing and partnerships with local organizations, especially the Douglas County School District, have gone up, she said.

“We want to take the success we have had here statewide,” she said.

“For us, the good news is we are ready to handle the crisis with our youth.”
