The adventure begins now Clear Creek graduates celebrate accomplishments, reflect on unique high school experience

The Class of 2021 lost some of those little moments that make up

the high school experience.

But, each loss taught Clear Creek High School seniors the value of love, valedictorian Elsie Gothman posited.

“COVID helped us learn who we are,” she said. “ … We chose happiness on the hard and easy days.”

Gothman and her 50 classmates received their diplomas and turned their tassels Saturday morning at Clear Creek’s graduation ceremony at Golddigger Stadium. Several

graduates said they appreciated having the ceremony outside on the new field and celebrating with their families and the community as a whole.

“I’m just happy to be here,” Ceci Davies said. “ … I’m excited to be done with high school.”

Members of the Class of 2021 had to handle unique challenges during their junior and senior years. During the ceremony, Hugh Pettitt-Kenney described how it was

difficult for them to decide their futures while navigating COVID-19 procedures.

Clay Robertson felt that the experience only brought his classmates closer together. High school felt so long in the moment, he described, but now it feels like it passed in the blink of an eye.

Clear Creek seeks public input about renaming local mountain

The Clear Creek Board of County Commissioners is seeking public comment about renaming Squaw Mountain.

The commissioners plan to meet at 5:30 p.m., June 1 for the public to submit written or verbal comments about the topic.

Clear Creek County is not renaming the mountain; it is only making a recommendation to a state advisory group, which then makes a recommendation to the federal naming board.

Last October, representatives from the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the U.S. Forest Service filed a joint federal petition to rename the peak Mestaa’ehehe Mountain. The proposed name would honor Owl Woman, a notable Cheyenne figure who helped maintain peaceful relations between local tribes and new settlers in the 1830s and 40s.

Commissioner Randy Wheelock, who has been meeting with tribal representatives about renaming this peak and Mount Evans, said that he personally supports the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition.

However, he and Commissioner

George Marlin said they wanted to hear from constituency first before submitting a letter of support or non-support for the petition.

Additionally, Wheelock said the Mestaa’ehehe Coalition is hosting an evening webinar today, May 26, to explain why the current name is derogatory to indigenous people, especially women, and why the mountain should be renamed in a way that honors indigenous women.

The webinar will not be recorded due to the sensitive nature of some discussion topics, including murdered and missing indigenous women.

Weighing in According to Wheelock, Clear Creek is the only stakeholder that hasn’t weighed in on the prospective name change, and so far, no other entities have objected. The state advisory board plans to tackle the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition in mid- or late summer, he said.

“The state naming advisory board is tackling some other items first,” Wheelock continued. “Because the word `squaw’ is unrecognized as being as offensive as it really is and

because it’s renaming a mountain above Denver, (the advisory board is) trying out the new system —what does and doesn’t work — by the time they get to things that are more controversial.”

Wheelock said the only reason Clear Creek has waited so long is because it didn’t want to weigh in prematurely and unduly influence discussion among other stakeholders.

Considering it now needs to voice its support or non-support, Wheelock felt a June 1 board meeting would give time for locals to attend the webinar, if they want, before submitting public comment.

He suggested the Board of County Commissioners could make a decision on June 1 about whether to support or not support the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition, or it could wait until June 8 to allow more time for public comment.

Commissioner George Marlin said he didn’t want to overemphasize Clear Creek’s role in this discussion, but also didn’t want to undervalue public opinion. He hoped that the June 1 session would be wellattended, so that the board doesn’t need to continue discussion to June 8.

Related roads Because there are three or four roads that share the mountain’s current name, the county will eventually need to decide whether and how to rename those roads. Currently, Marlin said there’s no formal proposal or process to rename any of the related county roads.

“The road names wouldn’t automatically change,” he clarified.

“It would be a county decision to rename the roads. Whenever we come to that, we will have a public comment process.”

Wheelock said some who live along those roads have had the same question, stating that renaming the mountain would likely inform that discussion.

He added that there is a potential for conversation between those residents and tribal representatives to discuss whether and how to rename them. “(The tribal representatives) have made it clear to me that the name change itself is huge, but it’s also a small piece of everything that needs to be done … including reeducating an entire society about this,” he continued. “ … The first step is this.”

Mount Evans to reopen with timed-entry reservations Online system will be similar to process used for Rocky Mountain National Park

Those wanting to visit Mount Evans this summer will need to make reservations first.

The U.S. Forest Service and other stakeholders are implementing a timed-entry reservation system, similar to the one used at Rocky Mountain National Park. Visitors can buy passes online, enter during a two-hour window, and stay as long as they desire.

Clear Creek District Ranger Scott Haas said the intent is threefold: protect the public and USFS personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic, improve visitor experiences, and preserve the health of the mountain’s flora and fauna.

He also believes the new system will alleviate the summertime traffic jam around Echo Lake Lodge.

The highway to the summit is scheduled to open for vehicle traffic June 4, depending on weather.

While prices remain the same based on vehicle type, there will now be an additional $2 reservation fee. Those entering the highway on bikes and on foot do not need reservations, USFS spokeswoman Reid

Armstrong said.

Once the online reservation system goes live, which was scheduled for this week, Armstrong said visitors will be able to purchase various tours based on which area or areas around Mount Evans they intend to visit.

Entry before 8 a.m. and after 6:30 p.m. will remain free, however if someone is taking up a parking spot during the day, they need to have a reservation, Armstrong clarified.

Likewise, if visitors only want to drive the highway without stopping, they can get a free hang tag at the welcome station.

“Our estimations are that most people are going to want to get a

reservation,” Armstrong continued.

Even with the reservation system, there is a possibility that trailheads will still be full for those arriving later in the day. Thus, the USFS will be monitoring and adjusting the system as needed as part of its adaptive management, Armstrong said.

“We’re basing it on data we’ve collected about use patterns and available parking spots,” she said.

Haas told the Clear Creek County commissioners during a May 18 meeting that there will be signs along the major thoroughfares to inform visitors of the change, and there might be some day-of passes

‘Know before you go’ With land managers across the state anticipating incredibly high levels of use this summer, the USFS and its partners are encouraging visitors to research their recreation areas and be aware of any new rules before visiting.

One major change for the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests is a food storage order at all sites, which should minimize bear encounters. Haas and Armstrong said bear encounters in the ARNF numbered in the hundreds last year, and thankfully, no one was hurt.

Another major change in Clear Creek County is that Maxwell Falls near Evergreen will now serve as a day-hike area only. Camping, overnight parking and campfires are now prohibited.

“For the U.S. Forest Service, it’s pretty unusual to go to only day use,” Haas said, adding that the agency has been working with residents to address various issues since 2016.

As for the fire season’s outlook, Haas said the Front Range is currently expecting a normal season.

While conditions can change very quickly, the forests are not nearly as dry as they were at this time last year, he said.

“We’re not out of the woods,” Haas continued, “but we’re looking much better.”

school experience, because it was an opportunity for everyone to celebrate together, especially after last year’s prom was canceled.

“For the most part, we were able to enjoy things,” Zabel said, “just in a different fashion.”

He added that he and his classmates were defined by their ability to break down walls and not be held back.

Members of the Class of 2021 will need that determination and bravery as they begin new chapters in their life, parent and commencement speaker Laura Robertson told the graduates during the ceremony.

She advised them to dream big and embrace whatever happens next.

“The adventure begins now,” she said.

Robertson and Principal Chris Gould both thanked the graduates’ family members in their speeches, and instructed the graduates to appreciate their parents and others who helped them reach this point.

In the stands, parents Dan Costello and Faith Costello-Wolff cheered for their son, Reno Wolff, who’s pursuing a career as a mechanic.

Faith described how remote learning was very difficult for Reno, and she was both excited and relieved to see him earn his diploma Saturday.

Since moving to Blue Valley from Wisconsin two years ago, the family has enjoyed seeing new traditions form at Clear Creek High School.

Both Faith and Dan said they liked Friday’s graduation parade through Idaho Springs, with Faith saying, “It

lets the community be a part of (the celebration).”

Dan said his post-graduation advice to Reno would be not to take life too seriously Faith counseled: “Hard work always pays off.”

Also among those smiling in the audience was Evergreen’s Paula Egan and her husband, who were

supporting their granddaughter Naomi Egan.

Naomi will be attending the Laguna College of Art and Design in California next semester, Paula said, describing her as a very talented artist. In addition to designing the commencement programs’ artwork, Naomi has done other projects around the community, Paula de-

scribed.

Paula added that her advice to Naomi would be to remember her family and to keep following her goals.

“She’s such a sweet girl,” she continued. “ … We’re very proud of her.”

VOICES A difficult year still provides hope

And just like that, it was summer.

There really aren’t words to capture the gratitude I have for the educators, families and students as the school year comes to a close.

In a year like no other, we discovered how truly creative we could be, how resilient we were and how much we cared about being together. At any point this year, people could have thrown their hands up and said “enough!” But they didn’t.

And after a year of mostly inperson learning, we are stronger as a community and have a deeper understanding of our collective strength and wisdom.

In the words of one of our school leaders, “We didn’t just survive, we thrived.” So true. We built things like playgrounds and athletic stadiums. Students dug into a trail, literally, as the beginnings of the new Golddigger Trail at Clear Creek Middle/High School unfolded. A new robotics class, a new STEAM class, a new home-improvement class, German (what?!)

as a new language offering, a new Project Bike Tech class, and more.

These are just a few of the cool things happening in our Clear Creek Schools. All during a pandemic.

In the words of one of our sixthgrade students, “Along with the Karen Quanbeck normal mental stress students deal with, a load of pandemic stress was added onto that. Nevertheless, I personally look around at my fellow classmates, and I see kids who can accomplish anything because, in my eyes, if you can get through a pandemic, you can get through anything, right? What do you feel when you look at these kids? Love for your kids, joy, pride maybe? I look at those kids, my classmates, my friends, and I feel hope. …

When we think back, I think we will always remember this as not only the year with masks and

quarantines, but also as the year we became closer to our classmates and learned so much more about them, as well as ourselves, than we could have possibly imagined.”

Sometimes things were difficult, really difficult. Treasured events got canceled. Important family connections were limited to a computer screen. Shortened and delayed athletic seasons with little time to train led to more injuries.

And the stress. From our youngest learners to our recent graduates, students were impacted by stress and anxiety caused by simply not knowing what the next week or month might bring.

Our kids soak up what happens around us: political strife, mass shootings, racial divides, heated rhetoric. And, brilliant and resilient, our students asked for more

connectivity, more collaboration and more understanding.

This year, as challenging as it was, has created a springboard for shining a light on student voices and interests. Next year will bring students more career-connected learning including additional apprenticeships, internships, job shadows, and career talks. At the elementary level, King-Murphy Elementary and Carlson Elementary are exploring experiential learning models. Students learn better when they discover, solve messy problems and get out into their community to learn.

This year has no doubt been one of the most challenging for all of us. And yet, here we are, stronger, more resilient, and in the words of Coryn, we feel hope.

I continue to be inspired by our Clear Creek community, and grateful to serve the students and families of Clear Creek School District.

Trusting adults to be adult about this I received my COVID-19 vaccine a few days ago. Knock on wood, I am doing just fine with no discernible side effects other than an expected sore arm.

All during the pandemic I found that the most effective course was the middle path. The alarmism about the pandemic as well as the dismissal of the pandemic as inconsequential seem to me to both be mistaken. COVID is not inconsequential with almost 600,000 dead in the United States.

Using common sense precautions, anyone can do what is necessary to protect themselves against the virus.

It was originally my intention to not speak about COVID vaccines, but a number of things changed my mind. My vaccination card is in my wallet, and if I show it, I can prove that I

was vaccinated. But I should not receive that request from anyone other than my personal physician or health care provider. I find it hard to believe that if I attend a gathering at a private home — that the host or hostess will ask to see my vaccination Joe Webb card along with the cards of other attendees.

I initially found it odd that different individuals would announce on social media that they had come down with the COVID virus. Under the different circumstances of the pandemic, it was a reasonable thing for them to do because they were warning others who might have had contact with them prior to their diagnosis.

Part of getting back to normal means trusting adults to behave as adults would behave. I trust people enough to not monitor them about their vaccination status or the status of their health.

This local history/nonfiction book gives a timeline from the early days of skiing in Colorado (1860s) through the ski boom (1950s and 1960s) to recent times, Loveland Ski Area is a delightful celebration of the ski area’s 75th Anniversary (2012). The straightforward narrative provides a quick read alongside stunning, full-color photographs.

This is recommended reading for outdoor enthusiasts and local history lovers.

Libby says: This is the perfect read to keep you going through the summer months! The story of the Upham family building our local ski mountain over the years made me fall in love with Loveland all over again!

Police Blotter: Crime Calls from May 10-16 Monday, May 10 — Idaho Springs officers were dispatched to a welfare check on Virginia Street.

An employee from a local business called into dispatch to request a welfare check on a male who earlier come into the business while he was intoxicated. The man left and was making vague suicidal statements.

Officers contacted the man, who said he was suicidal and scared. Officers took the man transported to a medical center for help.

Wednesday, May 12 — Georgetown police received a report of a dog running at large in the 1900 block of Argentine Street. The dog was caught and taken to Charlie’s Place, and the owner was notified.

Thursday, May 13 — Idaho Springs police received notification

that Sheriff’s deputies had attempted to contact a red pickup that had eluded Grand County officers.

ISPD was advised that the reported driver had multiple warrants for her arrest. While ISPD officers’ stop sticks deflated the front passengerside tire, the vehicle continued driving on eastbound Interstate 70.

The vehicle was later found on the side of the road near Evergreen, abandoned.

With roadside assistance about two hours away, officers decided to change the tire and make sure the spare was inflated properly. The two then continued traveling.

Saturday, May 15 — During the day, Georgetown police issued three marijuana citations and four alcohol-possession warnings at the lake.

Sunday, May 16 — Empire police received a report of shots fired near the 100 block of East Park Avenue.

Investigation found that the noises were not gunshots but two people reportedly launching bottle rockets.

Summonses were issued for disorderly conduct and fireworks violations.

Saturday, May 15 — Idaho Springs officers assisted a stranded motorist on Interstate 70 at exit 239.

Sunday, May 16 — Idaho Springs officers were dispatched to an unconscious male at the intersection of 17th Avenue and Miner Street.

The reporting party stated that a fight had taken place and that two males fled the scene in a white Jeep.

Medical personnel attended to the injured party while officers observed the suspect vehicle near the Police Department and contacted the two men. The two stated they were driving south onto 17th Avenue from Miner Street, and a male was standing on the corner flipping them off and yelling racial slurs.

One man got out of the Jeep and confronted the man on the corner when the fight started. One man was injured and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The case is open, as officers are reviewing video footage. Charges are pending.

Clear Creek lifts countywide mask order

Clear Creek officials have voted to lift the countywide mask mandate, despite the public health department’s recommendations to maintain it.

The county commissioners, sitting as the County Board of Health, voted 2-1 to rescind the language requiring masks in all places open

to the public, effective May 21.

Commissioners Sean Wood and George Marlin voted in favor at Thursday’s meeting, as they explained that they wanted Clear Creek to align with neighboring counties.

Commissioner Randy Wheelock voted against, as he advocated that Clear Creek lead the charge in keeping a countywide mask order. He also expressed his concerns about

the COVID-19 variants and those under 12 years old who are still ineligible for vaccines Tim Ryan, the county’s public health director, was likewise concerned about his ability to protect locals without a countywide mask order in place.

“Masks are — other than vaccines — the best way of slowing (the virus),” Ryan said. “ … You are eroding my ability to do my job.”

With the countywide mask order lifted, Clear Creek now falls under the state’s mask order and guidance, which states that fully vaccinated people can go without masks in public indoor spaces unless the setting requires it. There are exceptions, such as public transportation, and businesses may implement their own mask restrictions.

Clear Creek High School students have been planting bombs — seed bombs, that is — on the school grounds.

They hope the seeds will germinate and create beautiful clusters of wildflowers that will not only

beautify the area but increase the biodiversity. The students are part of the EcoSchools club, and they spent an afternoon about a month ago creating 250 1-inch diameter bombs that consist of lupine, blackeyed Susan, daisy, Columbine and purple coneflower seeds mixed with clay and worm castings to bind them together.

Recently the teens took a walk outside along what will be a trail around the school grounds, throwing the seed bombs as they went.

tional Wildflower Week.

Participants hope the recent rain will help the seeds germinate.

CCHS science teacher Melissa English called the seed-bomb project a great collaboration among the EcoSchools club, Scraps-to-Soil and the CSU Extension program.

George Marlin with Scraps-to-Soil explained that usually the organization plans an event for Earth Day in April, but since that didn’t work out, the seed-bomb idea was born. The wildflower initiative helps to inspire sustainable communities.

Chloe Alspaugh, president of CCHS EcoSchools, said the seed bombs were a unique way to reintroduce biodiversity onto school property, and students hoped information about wildflowers and biodiversity could be an education station along the trail.

“We like to promote natural wildflowers and plans to improve the ecosystem,” said Christine Crouse with the CSE Extension in Clear Creek County, which donated the seeds. “It’s important to take care of natural ecosystems.”

Georgetown Community School marks end-of-year with carnival Director bids adieu to students, parents

Nothing says summer like a carnival.

So, for Georgetown Community School, there was no better way to mark the end of the 2020-21 school year and celebrate the start of summer.

On Thursday, GCS students, staff and parents found there was

something for everyone as bouncy houses and obstacle courses, Zorb balls, a bungee jump and other rides took over the school’s playgrounds for the afternoon.

Miles Bowland, who just finished preschool at GCS, and his twin brother both said the bouncy castles were their favorite part of the carnival.

As he was waiting in line for the bungee jump, outgoing first-grader Taelor Carreon said the most fun part thus far had been the dance party bouncy house. However, he was reserving judgment until going on the bungee jump.

Reflecting back on the school year, he said his favorite part was learning math and his least favorite was reading.

COVID-19 made school a little tricky and annoying sometimes, he said, commenting, “I had to wear a mask all day. I didn’t like that.”

Elise Miller, a third-grader going on fourth-grader, felt similarly, saying COVID-19 protocols were the hardest part of the school year. She said it made it difficult for her and her classmates to do anything fun.

However, it didn’t stop the fun completely.

Elise said the year was awesome overall, commenting how the highlight was dissecting owl pellets and cow eyeballs.

The carnival was also becoming

a standout, with Elise describing it as “the funnest carnival ever.” She particularly enjoyed doing backflips and frontflips on the bungee jump.

After the 2019-20 school year ended abruptly, the school’s end-ofyear celebration was a simple car parade through downtown Georgetown. This year, for the last day of school, GCS wanted to restore some sense of normalcy, Director Tina Ozee described.

“I can’t think of a better way to end the year,” she said of the carnival.

leaving June 30. She and her son are moving to Texas, where Ozee is originally from, to be closer to family. She hopes to continue working in education long-term.

Hillary Miller, a 16-year educator who most recently led a Brighton charter school, will be taking over as GCS’ director on July 1.

Miller has a master’s degree in educational leadership and a bachelor’s degree in English, and has a background in both teaching and administration. She’s also the mother of two sets of twins.

Miller has been visiting the school in recent weeks to meet the teachers and students, Ozee said, but she was unable to attend Thursday’s carnival.

“I’m very happy to have her here,” Ozee continued.

In her six years at GCS, Ozee has served as a parent-volunteer, substitute teacher, preschool teacher, business support in the office, interim director and director.

“This is the job I never knew I wanted,” she said. “ … I’ve enjoyed helping the school grow.”

Ozee added that she hopes GCS will continue its upward trajectory, which she’s confident it will under Miller’s leadership.

If Thursday was any indication, the hardest aspect of her departure will continue to be saying goodbye to students, parents and staff, Ozee said. She expressed how she was extremely proud of them, especially after this year, as GCS didn’t receive a single complaint about COVID-19 procedures.

As a final message to the community, Ozee stated: “Thank you for the support. Our main goal was to make sure the kids were OK, and the community helped us do that.”

Four Points representatives met with neighbors of the properties last week to gather ideas and answer questions. No formal plans for developing the properties have been released, though Four Points has said multifamily and retail plus a park near the Clear Creek rec center are in the works.

Four Points withdrew its formal development application with Idaho Springs earlier this month, saying it didn’t want to be hindered by the constraints of the application process to gain consensus on the properties.

The Clear Creek school board selected Four Points Development in December to develop the properties.

The sale price will be $2.525 million, which is contingent on Four Points getting the properties rezoned. As part of the agreement, Four Points committed to community meetings to get input on what should be built on the properties.

2021-22 calendar, four-day school week The 2021-22 school calendar that includes five-day school weeks has been set, with school starting on Aug. 17 and ending on May 19.

The Clear Creek school board on May 18 approved the calendar that includes Thanksgiving break Nov. 22-26, winter break Dec. 19-Jan. 3 and spring break March 21-25.

This is the last five-day school calendar the district plans to have after the school board also approved a resolution to move to a four-day school week for the 2022-23 school year. The resolution builds in several markers to make sure the district is moving in the right direction.

According to the resolution, by January 2022, district officials will provide the school board and families: • A list of fifth-day options for students by level and location;

Mount-aining social distance on trails With many mask mandates lifted statewide, public health officials urge caution outdoors

With many Denver metro counties moving to “level clear” and Colorado ending its statewide mask mandate, the era of coronavirus restrictions seems to be coming to

a close. Nevertheless, local public health officials urged caution when asked how to properly practice trail etiquette in a summer that will still feature the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outdoor mask mandates have seen rollbacks for months, with Jefferson County Public Health and Tri-County Public Health — which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties — lifting their outdoor mask mandates on April 5 and Boulder County following suit on April 9. A statewide executive order was amended on May 14 to allow fully vaccinated people to go outdoors

without wearing masks.

Nevertheless, many public health officials are urging caution when visiting trails and open spaces in the coming weeks. The pandemic is far from over in Colorado, which on May 18 reported a case rate of 20 per 100,000 people — the highest in the U.S. at the time of the report.

Jefferson County Public Health Public Affairs Manager Ashley Sever said that despite the move to “level clear,” JCPH was still recommending that people wear masks if they’re in large crowds or uncertain of the vaccination status of those around them.

“We’ve moved to level clear,” said Sever. “We still recommend when anybody is around people who don’t have a good vaccination status, if they don’t know, or if they know they’re unvaccinated or in larger crowds, things like that, we certainly want people to continue to take prevention measures.”

Dr. Bernadette Albanese, an epidemiologist with Tri-County Health Department, added that while getting a vaccine is likely the best thing to do to avoid getting sick, there are increased risk factors when in SEE OUTDOORS, P17

“Getting a vaccine is probably the number one thing you can do to keep healthy,” said Albanese. “When you’re outdoors with a lot of people you don’t know — you don’t know their infection status — and you want to put yourself in the best position to remain healthy, how about a mask?

“I don’t think it’s hard to do,” Albanese continued. “And it’ll protect you. And also protect others.”

Sever added that some examples of high-risk situations could include being outdoors with people who are being boisterous or have recently vacationed.

“When you’re in a higher-risk scenario,” said Sever, “like with someone who recently vacationed, or if people are yelling or screaming or singing and you’re in closer proximity with those people, that’s another reason to wear a mask outdoors. It’s in those higher-risk scenarios where wearing a mask outdoors is still probably a good idea.”

Enessa Janes, Arvada’s deputy director of the Department of Vibrant Communities and Neighborhoods, said that she recommended people continue wearing masks and practice social distancing in parks and on trails, despite the change to “level clear”. Janes added that in situations where it is impossible to socially distance, using one’s best judgment should suffice.

“For our part we’re really en-

couraging people to continue to use (masks),” said Janes, “and to follow CDC guidelines and not visit the parks if they’re feeling sick.

“There will probably be situations where you can’t always keep six feet social distancing with passing,” Janes continued. “In those cases, step off the trail if you need to, but please don’t step off so far that you disturb the natural environment or disrupt the habitat. Just be as respectful to other walkers and hikers as possible.”

Janes added that she anticipated continued high usage of open spaces, and thanked the maintenance teams that have been working to keep public parks clean throughout the pandemic.

“Our trails and parks have gotten so much use over the course of the pandemic,” said Janes,” and can continue to get that use because of how hard our teams have been working to keep the parks looking clean and ready for increased use. We’re really anticipating the same level of use this summer — if not more.”
