Wise breaks silence, files complaint against DCSD Legal complaint alleges discrimination, retaliation and illegal firing

has made a legal complaint against his former employers alleging retaliation, discrimination and that his infamous firing was illegal.

The former Douglas County School District superintendent filed a “complaint of discrimination” on April 13 with the Colorado Civil Rights Division and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — the agencies that can give formal approval for Wise to sue the district.

He claims the Douglas County School Board majority discriminated and retaliated against him because of his advocacy for the district’s educational equity policy and universal masking during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Douglas County expands wildfire support as experts warn of warm, dry year

Douglas County will expand its use of aviation support for wildfires this year amid predictions of a summer season “warmer and drier” than average.

In past seasons, the county has secured exclusive contracts for aerial wildfire support for two 45-day periods of the year with a break during monsoon season.

This year, however, the office of emergency management requested 153 consecutive days.

“Fire seasons are getting longer, drier. Monsoons are weaker.

Drought has been pervasive, and we recognize that the risk doesn’t necessarily go away,” he said. “The fires we see these days do tend to be more destructive and create greater risk.”

Douglas County will add the 60 additional days of exclusive-use aviation support for wildfires from June 1 through Oct. 31 after the contract was approved in an April 12 meeting.

Douglas County students honor teachers Special appreciation event held

“This is the highlight of the year if you’re lucky enough to be nominated,” Michael Schneider, a teacher at Castle View High School, said. “A night like this, with these students, that will keep me going through a lot of rough times.”

After a three-year lapse during the pandemic, the Castle Rock stake of Church of the Latter-Day Saints hosted its annual Teacher Appreciation Night on April 13 for graduating seniors in the church to honor a teacher who influenced them and their education.

The 47 seniors honored 38 teachers from eight schools with a plaque that featured a photo of the student and a message about their impact.

Schneider, who teaches literature and English classes,

was nominated by two students -- Lucy Seymour and Samuel Travis -- who both emphasized how he made the classroom environment fun, engaging and lighthearted.

“I picked Mr. Schneider because he’s an outstanding teacher,” Seymour said.

“Whenever we were in class, it never felt like we were only just learning, but it was a fun start to my day.

Even though my writing may have never shown it, I learned so much from his classes.”

Seymour said Schneider’s enthusiasm for books has actually led her to read more outside the classroom and really opened her eyes to a subject she initially wasn’t interested in.

For Travis, who already liked to read and write, Schneider helped him develop that passion and explore others, such as film.

environment and he put students first when making lesson plans so he made everyone feel welcome,” he said. “He had an enthusiastic energy that made me excited for his class every day.”

Hugs, tears and smiles were a mainstay of the evening as students thanked their teachers one by one.

Breaking the mold, student Kaison Toone recognized several teachers during his speech thanking his physics teacher Matthew Leach of Douglas County High School. Toone noted it’s difficult to honor just one person when so many have impacted him.

“There are like dozens on dozens of teachers I could choose,” Toone said. “They’re all great and some of them are here. It makes me very happy you guys are my teachers, I’ve learned an incredible amount.

Castle View student Brody Cauble captured the theme of the evening best while honoring his teacher Erin Newton.

“Mrs. Erin loves me and all of her students,” Cauble said. “She inspires and says good morning every single day. She dances with us, she tells great jokes and she loves Reece’s, just like I do. I love Reece’s, but I love Mrs. Erin more.”

On top of the students, Castle Rock Mayor Jason Gray and Castle Rock Stake President Chris Anderson both spoke to the importance of the work teachers do to educate youth and build community.

Anderson said showing educators support is key to the great work they do and one of the main reasons the event continues to happen every year.

“You all here do an amazing thing and we appreciate you and your examples of putting the needs of other people before your own,” he said. “That’s what we hope these young men and women are learning.”

The EPA has downgraded Colorado’s North Front Range ozone problem to “severe” from “serious,” a long-expected move that requires state and local officials to take stronger runs at cutting the healthdamaging pollution.

“The proposed reclassifications would require the State of Colorado to apply more stringent air quality measures to sources across the area,” an EPA release said, in announcing the proposed change after months of pressure from environmental advocates who said the

Alexander spoke about the specific risks faced by Douglas County.

“Wildfire is the number one natural hazard in Douglas County,” he said. “More than 80% of our residents in Douglas County live within some measure of wildland urban interface risk.”

The county has seen a more than 60% increase in the 5-year average of fire occurrence since the period from 2006 to 2010, Alexander said.

Alexander said they expect that increase to continue unless there is a drastic change in the climate or residents’ personal habits.

“Current predictions for the year, for this coming summer and fire season into next winter are predicting warmer and drier than average local conditions,” said Mike Alexander with the Office of Emergency Management. “We are currently facing a fair amount of risk within the county.”

The exclusive-use contract, which parks a 300-gallon-tank helicopter in the county to respond to wildfires, is for about $1 million. Three other contracts for call-whenneeded aerial support from April 13

deadlines to do so had already come and gone.

“Under the ‘severe’ reclassification, these requirements include the use of reformulated gasoline in summer months and a reduction of the threshold requiring control measures on emissions sources from 50 tons per year to 25 tons per year,” the EPA said.

In a previous interview that will be published on April 12, Colorado officials said the pending EPA downgrade will require hundreds of companies to get emission permits from a state system already critically backlogged. State health officials say their steep budget request is designed to clear the jam and improve the air.

Tavern owners double down Max Taps opens second location in Centennial

The original location of Max Taps Co. survived 2020, a feat that shaped founder Dave Gardner’s outlook on opening a second taproom.

“If we can make it through that, with nobody allowed in a bar, it seems like we should be able to pull this off,” Gardner said of the company’s expansion to Centennial.

The new location, near the intersection of East Arapahoe Road and South Lima Street, opened in February and has 63 Colorado beers and four Colorado wines on tap. required for 473 more sources of pollution that contribute to ozone, as the threshold drops from 50 tons of covered pollutants a year to include all those emitting 25 tons or more, Air Pollution Control Director Michael Ogletree said. That new work will run headlong into a state health permitting system already assailed by courts and environmental groups as years behind, potentially endangering the health of more Coloradans living in highly polluted areas.

One set of permits at a key polluter, the Suncor Energy refinery in Commerce City, expired in 2012, and another in 2018, with a state court judge in January ordering Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment officials to finish renewing the permits “without delay.”

“Our pollution control division is really at a transition point,” CDPHE Director Jill Hunsaker Ryan said in an interview. “It’s been underresourced for two decades. We’re changing the way that we fund it. And I’m on a mission to really modernize and rightsize it to meet today’s air quality demands.”

EPA Regional Administrator KC Becker said, “Ground-level ozone remains one of the most challenging public health concerns we face, affecting large numbers of Coloradans and their families.” The reclassification “will make sure we are leveraging all available measures and resources as we move forward to reduce ozone pollution” with the state and other partners, she said.

and Kaylee Winegar later fired Wise in a 4-3 vote, a decision that led to protests in the community and among students.

Allegations that the manner of Wise’s firing was illegal surfaced Jan. 31, when the board minority of David Ray, Susan Meek and Elizabeth Hanson publicly alleged the majority used “daisy chain” meetings to plan Wise’s removal out of the public’s eye, and then gave him an ultimatum to resign or be fired in another closed-door meeting.

Wise spent his entire 26-year career with the district, beginning as a teacher and climbing the ranks to superintendent. His superintendent term began on May 12, 2021, and would have ended on June 30, 2024.

Wise’s discrimination complaint alleges the true motives for his firing were the majority’s belief that he stood between them and what the suit describes as discriminatory policies the four wanted to pursue.

While the majority opposed universal masking mandates, Wise stood behind using those precautions in the district to protect high-risk students and staff vulnerable to COVID-19. The former superintendent was also a proponent of the district’s equity policy, which received backlash among local conservatives who equated the policy’s implementation with teaching critical race theory.

“Mr. Wise’s termination was also an illegal act of retaliation against what the board majority perceived as Mr. Wise’s opposition to its policy preferences — but which in fact was Mr. Wise’s legally protected opposition to discrimination, which he in good faith believed was required by state and federal civil rights law,” the complaint says.

The legal document outlines a lengthy list of statements from throughout the majority’s Kids First campaign that Wise’s legal team puts forward as evidence the majority holds discriminatory views against people more susceptible to COVID-19, people of color and LGBTQ+ people.

For example, the complaint cites comments Peterson made disapproving of one of his daughter’s math questions that featured a same-sex couple. The complaint say Peterson has credited the question with inspiring him to run for school board.

Their disapproval of Wise’s involvement in requiring universal masking, and his involvement in a lawsuit the district brought against the masking-mandate-averse local health department, “motivated the board majority to unlawfully terminate Mr. Wise,” the complaint says.

“Likewise, another key platform espoused by the individual respondents was hostility and opposition to gender and sexuality ‘constructs,’ ‘critical race theory’ and anti-discrimination efforts aimed at supporting racial minorities more broadly, which the individual respondents crystallized into opposition to the district’s educational equity policy,” the complaint says.

The ousted superintendent’s complaint also says his firing led to personal suffering, including anxiety and depression, “and has greatly impacted his personal and familial life.”

retaliated against as a person of a protected class, but instead because he advocated on behalf of students’ and staff’s civil rights.

Meeting at coffee shop The complaint offers more detail of the meeting in which board President Peterson and Vice-President Williams privately asked Wise to step down.

The three met at a Parker coffee shop shortly before 7 a.m. on Jan. 28.

Peterson told Wise he wanted to “cut to the chase,” the complaint quotes him as saying. Peterson next told Wise the majority spoke independently and “are looking to move into a different direction towards a new superintendent,” according to the complaint.

Williams told Wise she wanted to do right by him and that “we don’t want to make this super public, but we are prepared to do that if that’s the direction in which it has to go,” the complaint quotes Williams as saying.

The complaint says Wise told the directors his entire career had been with DCSD, and the roughly two years left on his contract “timed perfectly with his retirement plans.” He asked why the board wanted a new superintendent, to which Williams purportedly said, “I think we have a pretty good case.”

The complaint quotes Williams as referring to “a lot of things happening behind the scenes to work against the four (new board members). So, when I say we, I’m just talking about the four of us, not the board.”

“I know meetings that have occurred that probably shouldn’t have occurred, without at least Mike knowing,” Williams said to Wise, according to the complaint. The directors said they reviewed all options for ending Wise’s contract with the board’s attorney and asked Wise to move up his retirement plans.

They told him four directors were “absolutely committed to moving in a different direction,” the complaint says.

The complaint also says Peterson

told Wise that the district would pay him through June 2022, but also “warned Superintendent Wise that he needed to accept the offer, or they might have ‘to go for cause.’”

Wise urged equity policy The equity policy “embodied, at a system-wide level, the district’s existing legal obligations to address discrimination against its students and staff,” the complaint says.

The district began work on its equity policy under the tenure of former Superintendent Thomas Tucker. The need for the equity policy “was apparent based on the startling lack of diversity in DCSD staff and documented instances of racism experienced by students,” the complaint says.

As of December 2020, the district had one Black principal and 60 Black teachers out of its 4,440 licensed educators. In the wake of George Floyd’s death, students urged the district to make diversity, equity and inclusion a system priority, the complaint says.

Wise had advocated for the equity policy during its creation, and as interim superintendent was “intimately involved with helping to implement the policy” after it was enacted. That included helping the district’s equity team coordinate DCSD’s “first diversity and inclusiveness trainings” and helping develop restorative practices.

The complaint alleging he was illegally fired and retaliated against says the majority’s campaign exposed a hostility among the four toward racial equity.

“Individual respondents also made clear that they did not view Mr. Wise as an ally in their crusade against the equity policy and racial inclusivity generally,” the complaint states. To manage COVID-19, Wise helped implement hybrid learning as an executive director of schools during the beginning of the 2020-21 school year while Tucker was still superintendent. Wise personally supported in-person learning, the complaint says, but the district moved fully remote from Nov. 30, 2020, through

Jan. 5, 2021.

The complaint says political polarization regarding the pandemic increased that October, including in Douglas County.

The complaint highlights how Wise split with the school board in place at the time regarding in-person learning during COVID. While he drafted proposals for a gradual return to in-person learning in January and February of 2021, the board voted against that plan and extended remote learning. Protests ensued.

That October, the newly-formed Douglas County Health Department passed a resolution allowing any child to opt out of masking mandates in the county with a parent’s note.

The school district sued in federal court alongside nine students, saying the health order violated the civil rights of students with disabilities and who were especially vulnerable to COVID-19.

“Mr. Wise took seriously his obligation to provide a safe environment for all students and stood in solidarity with students with disabilities who were at greater health risk if they contracted COVID-19,” the complaint states.

DCSD could not comply and provide those students equal access to education, that federal lawsuit said.

Wise was called to testify and “engaged in protected activity,” according to his April 14 filing, by providing a statement alongside the district’s request for a temporary restraining order. Wise said the health department’s order would decrease masking and leave students with disabilities more vulnerable to the virus. A judge granted the district a temporary restraining order in the case.

“No parent should be forced to choose between sending their child to school and risking their child’s health, and no family should have to fear that their child may face life-threatening illness just to access their right to a great education,” Wise said at the time about the judge’s order, according to his complaint.

When Corey Wise, the ousted superintendent of Douglas County Schools, received a text asking for a coffee shop meeting among him and the school board president and vice president, he thought the request seemed odd.

“The setting up of the meeting was out of character,” he said.

The board president and vice president wanted to meet out of the blue and quickly, Wise said, requesting to speak early on Jan. 28 before Wise left town for some planned time off. They also wanted to meet in person.

“I was worried about what that was about,” Wise said.

So, Wise recorded the conversation.

The former superintendent said he wanted to be factual and have an accurate record about what was said to him that day.

In the meeting, Wise said he was clearly told the new board majority was committed to removing him as superintendent if he did not retire or resign. By Feb. 4, the board terminated Wise without cause in a split 4-3 decision.

Direct quotes from Wise’s recording help make up a portion of a legal complaint Wise brought against the district on April 13, alleging his firing was illegal, discriminatory and retaliation for his advocacy behind universal masking and the district’s equity policy.

The complaint offers the first in-depth look at Wise’s perspective about the way

he was fired and why board members said he was no longer the right leader for DCSD. Wise also alleges he was fired because he would not support what the complaint describes as discriminatory and racist policies the new board majority — Mike Peterson, Becky Myers, Christy Williams and Kaylee Winegar — wanted to pursue by unraveling the district’s equity policy and banning mask mandates.

As an example of what the legal complaint calls the majority’s unlawful views, the complaint cites comments from Peterson during his campaign, in which he disapproved of his daughter’s math homework referencing a same-sex couple.

The complaint also comprises four charges of aiding and abetting workplace discrimination against the newly elected board majority individually, and the team will soon file a whistleblower claim. Under a recently passed state law, the Colorado Public Health Emergency Whistleblower Act, whistleblowers are protected from retaliation if they report public health concerns.

Wise’s testimony during a federal lawsuit the district brought against the local health department — which sought to shield the district’s ability to require universal masking on behalf of students with disabilities — was protected activity, said Iris Halpern, one of Wise’s attorneys from Rathod Mohamedbhai LLC. “It’s exactly what he did. This man followed the law, and it shows you how the protected activity, how deep it went.

Firing him for engaging in this type of behavior is just grossly unlawful,” said Qusair Mohamedbhai, another of Wise’s attorneys at the Denver-based firm. Wise is also represented by the Denver firm Allen, Vellone, Wolf, Helfrich & Factor.

The four have consistently maintained they followed Colorado law in their handling of Wise’s termination. Williams and Peterson have also said during board meetings they considered asking Wise privately to retire or resign as the respectful thing to do, rather than forcing a public termination process.

“It wasn’t just, we want to look at what’s best for you,” Wise said, recalling comments from the majority that framed the Jan. 28 meeting as a favor to him. He believes their priority was getting him out quietly, he said.

On Jan. 28, Peterson purportedly told Wise that the district would pay him for the remainder of that semester if he accepted their offer to retire early, but if he did not, the board might pursue termination for cause, according to the legal complaint.

Wise said it was threatening, intimidation and bullying.

He also broached that his successor, former charter school leader Erin Kane, texted him a photo of portions of his contract and the Jeffco Schools superintendent contract less than an hour after his Jan. 28 meeting ended with Peterson and Williams.

Peterson has publicly acknowledged that he approached Kane to see if she had interest in the superintendency before Wise was fired. Kane has emphatically denied she knew about plans to fire Wise or that she colluded for the superintendency.

“The fact that Erin Kane texted me shortly afterwards,” Wise said. “Erin Kane texted me before the other board members know. Again, I don’t see that as kind.”

Wise got “very little sleep” the weekend after, he said, calling the Jan. 28 meeting “traumatic.”

Once the meeting became public

knowledge, Peterson said Wise was not ordered to step down and that he was merely given time to weigh his options or leave on his own terms if he wanted.

Wise said he was not surprised the board majority ultimately fired him. He believes “the decision had been made” before Peterson and Williams met with him. The legal complaint also quotes Peterson as telling Wise the majority was committed to replacing him as superintendent.

The firing turned Wise’s world upside down, he said. It affected his wife, his children, his parents, and spurred a range of emotions.

“I need benefits for my family. I need a job for my family. Everyone thinks ‘Oh, you have it set,’” he said. “Life isn’t that easy.”

The legal complaint also says his firing led to anxiety and depression, amid other emotional distress.

“It’s the first time in your life where everything gets flipped upside down and it’s unexpected and I don’t think it’s deserving,” he said.

The COVID-19 pandemic shined a spotlight on mental health, and that everyone experiences trauma, Wise said.

It changed his mindset too.

“Seeking out help. Talking to somebody.

Talking to a professional. I think that’s a positive,” he said.

Wise has landed a new job with the Cherry Creek School District as an assistant superintendent. Since he left Douglas County Schools, he has worked for Jeffco Public Schools as an executive director of school.

He’s been grateful for an overwhelming show of support from people in the community and throughout Colorado, he said. He’s also confident in his work on educational equity and COVID-19 management that he says wrongfully provoked his termination.

“I would do it again,” he said.

District financial chief leaving over frustrations with school board

Records show the Douglas County Schools chief financial officer is the second high-ranking official to resign out of frustration with the new school board majority’s actions.

Kate Kotaska, the chief financial officer for Douglas County Schools, will be leaving her cabinet position in June, just shy of two years with the district.

Kotaska formally notified Superintendent Erin Kane of her decision on April 5. Colorado Community Media obtained her resignation letter in a public records request.

The financial chief wrote in her resignation letter that the district “quickly felt like home, and my team like family,” when she joined DCSD in July 2020. She also believes she and other district employees “have made a difference” in the district, she wrote.

“When the decision was made to terminate former Superintendent Wise, I began to question whether I’d continue to have the ability to make a difference. I began to question whether my values, that center deeply around equity for students, would continue to have a place,” Kotaska wrote.

Williams and Kaylee Winegar opposed the district’s educational equity initiatives during their campaign.

An equity policy the previous board adopted in 2021 became a local center of controversy as national debates surged regarding critical race theory in schools, the teaching of American history and equity in education.

The district has repeatedly emphasized it does not teach critical race theory, and the policy was seen as a major milestone for DCSD among its proponents.

Once seated, the majority consid-

ered repealing the district’s equity policy but instead passed a resolution requiring the superintendent to return in September with potential amendments.

The board later fired former Superintendent Corey Wise, who had supported the equity policy, through a 4-3 vote. Majority members said part of their concern with Wise was how he implemented the equity policy.

Wise’s firing spurred protests and walk-outs and ended his 26-year career with the district, where he began as a student teacher.

The board majority has also said the district needed new leadership because they want DCSD to move in a new direction, although they have not specified details of what that might entail beyond a focus on academics.

“The events of the last several weeks have made it clear that the only direction DCSD will move in is the direction the board chooses. While the agenda still remains uncertain, the message is clear that nothing will stand in the way of that agenda,” Kotaska wrote.

In her letter, Kotaska expressed support for Kane as someone “incredibly capable of making change in the district.”

“It is unfortunate that, through the series of events that led to your

appointment, you have become the embodiment of an agenda rather than a celebrated leader,” Kotaska wrote.

Kane’s selection as Wise’s successor was mired by allegations that Wise’s firing was illegal and that the majority had predetermined her for the superintendency before ousting him.

Kotaska’s last day will be June 30.

Kotaska has not announced her next role. She declined an interview regarding her departure.

A hallmark of Kotaska’s time with the district has been working with the human resources department to draft a new compensation schedule for licensed employees. The plan gained board approval in March and is aimed at making the district’s teacher pay more competitive — a top priority for the school board.

Before coming to the district, Kotaska worked for a technology and consulting firm that provides K-12 financial software. She also spent a decade working for Denver Public Schools in financial management.

Kotaska is the second DCSD leader to leave a cabinet position this year.

Former Special Education Services Officer Sid Rundle resigned in February, the day after Wise was terminated, in condemnation of the board majority’s actions.

“If you were to come multiple times, you’d have a different experience,” Gardner said. “You get some barbecue with a nice pilsner or pizza with an IPA and it’s completely different.”

The beer at Max Taps rotates as well. When one beer runs out, it’s replaced with a similar-style beer from a different brewery.

“We have roughly the same amount of styles on tap, but we always switch it up,” Gardner said.

Gardner and his wife Shelly opened Max Taps’ first location in Highlands Ranch — where they live — in 2017.

Gardner said he truly appreciates the community. Its support sustained the business during the “terrifying” closure of dine-in restaurants and bars at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We just love this industry so much, and we’ve had such a good experience at the other location (in Highlands Ranch),” he said.

But to his surprise, opening their second location was just as hard as opening the original, Gardner said.

He knew how to steer clear of the problems he encountered the first time around, but every situation comes with its own set of challenges.

But like getting married, having a child, or buying a house, Gardner said there’s no perfect time to expand.

“If the right opportunity presents itself, then you should take it,” he said. “... If it’s something you want, there’s only one way to make it happen.”

The space in Centennial — already outfitted with a cooler, bar and gorgeous views — was too good to pass up, Gardner said.

Fortunately, the days are getting longer and warmer.

“Once it’s sunny and nice out, people just absolutely love the patio,” Gardner said.

With spring inching toward summer, Gardner’s working to make outdoor time even more enjoyable for his customers. Starting in May, Max Taps Centennial will feature live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

“When the weather’s really nice and I see people starting to sit on that patio, it makes me really happy that we decided to do this.”

Max Taps in Centennial has 63 beers and four wines — all from Colorado — on tap.

STEM looks to open new schools in Denver, Sterling Ranch Pushback on plan is expected in Denver, but Douglas County approval is expected

One of Colorado’s highest-ranking schools has applied to open two new locations in Denver and Sterling Ranch.

STEM School Highlands Ranch, which ranks 10th in the state according to the US News and World Report, has applied to replicate its KOSON problem-based learning model in two new communities. Replication is the process by which charters open new schools that use the same instructional model.

In the Denver Public Schools district, STEM hopes to open an elementary school, and in Sterling Ranch, the school would range from kindergarten to 12th grade.

“One of (STEM’s) strategic initiatives is to get the method we use everywhere,” said Penny Eucker, former executive director of STEM and CEO of KOSON Schools, a charter network that includes STEM and the proposed schools.

solutions to a central problem or question, because of the student engagement and educational results she has seen come from the program.

“Students don’t do well with people talking at them,” she said. “Seeing their engagement (with problembased learning) … you can’t make (students) work that hard. They have to want to.”

Both proposed schools have seen community interest and high intent to enroll, Eucker said, while noting that she expects Denver Public Schools to initially deny STEM’s application to open a new school because of the district’s declining enrollment numbers.

According to DPS, the 2020 enrollment numbers were down 3,500 from a year earlier, a continuation of decreasing elementary enrollment numbers.

However, that hasn’t deterred STEM from planning to open a school in the area, and Eucker said STEM will appeal to the state board of

education if the district rejects them.

She said parents want more choices, which she cited as a key reason to open a STEM elementary school in Denver.

“It’s like saying restaurants aren’t doing well right now, so we shouldn’t open new restaurants,” Eucker said.

Currently, Denver Public Schools doesn’t have a STEM elementary school option. Eucker said she’s hoping the STEM school will get families and students excited about the new learning opportunity and potentially help bring up DPS district enrollment.

“I always say to never move a happy student, but if the student isn’t happy, what is there to lose,” she said.

STEM’s application for Sterling Ranch in the Douglas County School District is more likely to be approved by the school board since the district is not seeing an enrollment drop and members have voiced support for parent choice and charter schools.

is between three possibilities, while the Sterling Ranch school would be at Piney River Road and Georgetown Street.

To establish the schools in their respective communities and help ensure their success, each would initially only teach just 25 students per class. At the Denver school, the first year would be just kindergarten to third grade and Sterling Ranch’s school would start with grades kindergarten through second grade.

Ultimately, STEM aims to teach 110 students per grade at each school by the fall of 2027.

STEM’s new Teacher Support Team is playing a critical role by creating the foundational guidelines and rubrics for problem-based learning that can be adapted by teachers to individual subjects and lessons.

“The team is laying the groundwork now and what they’re doing is creating a repository of (problembased learning units) K-12 that can get repurposed at other schools and be a jumping off point,” said Nicole Bostel, director of communications for STEM School Highlands Ranch.

“That’s not to say that you can’t adjust PBLs because a whole component of our mission is never stop innovating.”

Both the Denver Public Schools and the Douglas County School District are expected to respond to the STEM applications in June. In the meantime, Bostel said the KOSON team will be presenting their plans to each community and answering questions.

Putting the ranch in Sterling Ranch

O

ne day, the area north of Titan Road near Sterling Ranch’s current communities will be filled in with houses and development, but right now, the property has a different occupant — cattle.

That’s because the Sterling Ranch Development Company decided to lease that 3,400-acre area to a local rancher as part of co-owner Harold Smethills’ goal of proving that suburban ranching is possible, he said.

“There will always be cattle on Sterling Ranch,” Smethills said.

Even after the land is built out, they will bring cattle into their open spaces, he said.

For now, there are about 220 head of cattle on the property, not including about 200 additional calves that were born there this spring.

Spokesperson Kari Larese said the district has a list of the people who received the incorrect ballots and will be reaching out to them directly to communicate the error. All permanent absentee voters will receive corrected mail ballots.

New ballots will be mailed and should arrive this week, according to a release from the Metro District. Corrected ballots will also be available on May 3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the polling location at 62 Plaza Drive, Highlands Ranch.

Anyone who has already returned a ballot will have to

revote because the incorrect ballots will be invalidated, Larese said.

In the Northwest Region, candidates Eric T. Rysner and Scott A. Densmore are running. Carolyn Schierholz and Robert W. Mainger are running in the South Central Region.

So far, none of the Clough’s calves have been lost to predators this year.

CoCo, 6, said she wants to be a barrel race someday. But that’s not all.

“I also want to be a rodeo queen,” she said.

Matt keeps his cattle at the Sterling Ranch during the winter and moves them back to summer pastures after calving season.

“I think people are very happy to see the cattle in these urban environments,” he said. “They love it.”

Part of the reason Sterling Ranch leases to Clough is because as the cattle graze, they decrease fuel for potential wildfires.

“Douglas County has been great about understanding the benefit of grazing,” he said.

Springtime is here

W

hile we have had some roadblocks in enjoying the spring season with wind and some storms – I have to say I love this season in Colorado.

It’s the time of year to start planning gardens.

Seedlings for the vegetable garden are just about ready to be transplanted from the FROM THE greenlights inside to the raised EDITOR beds in the yard.

Our Douglas County reporter, Elliott Wenzler, got us a little more in the spirit of spring this week with her story and photos on Sterling Ranch being more than just a housing development. Instead, they still have a ranch in the area with plenty of baby calves. Anytime we see those baby calves, we know it is time for spring.

Thelma Grimes Besides flowers, vegetable gardens and baby animals — I love this time of year in Colorado because of all the outdoor activities throughout the area. Living by Cherry Creek State Park, kayaking in the lake is a big favorite activity starting in springtime and going into the hot summer months.

Last weekend, I took a ride to check out the area and see if the winds would hold up for a first voyage out this spring. As I drove around the park, it was a little unnerving.

All the talk in the region right now is fires.

The fact is, there is no beginning and end to “fire season” now — it is a year-round concern for residents and fire officials.

While I love spring, as I drove around the area, a part of me hoped that we can get more rain and snow. It is not a secret that we need more moisture in the ground.

Living near Cherry Creek State Park, we looked at all the brush, all the trees in the area and we started thinking about what it would mean if a fire were to spark up. A fire can spark from an overheated car, an irresponsible person throwing out a cigarette butt, or some freak incident.

Living near this big, open area has me concerned like many residents this year as news of wildfires throughout the state has already started making the rounds. Glenwood Canyon was most recently on fire.

In Littleton, police and citizens are dealing with fires being set at night in local parks.

As we enjoy the spring this year, we as residents have to be just as vigilant this year as we have ever been before. In order to keep loving the outdoor activities this region and state has to offer, we as citizens have just as much responsibility to help protect it as the firefighters and public safety officials we rely on to keep us safe this year.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A challenge to climate column Regarding Allen Best’s April 7 column, “An unsolved math problem on the Colorado River”: The issue of future western U.S. (west of the 100th meridian) water supplies in a naturally dry climate with well documented recurring periods of drought certainly deserves careful consideration and advance planning for conservation and adaptation.

Examination of historical versus current flow amounts, possibly severe future flow shortages and the dual problems of over allocation and over use are known issues that have been in discussion for a good number of years.

Hopefully discussions will continue to flow (pun intended) in the right direction.

However, linking the hula-hoop science of climate change alarmism to drought conditions that may or may not be any longer or severe than what has occurred in the past along with what can only be called a dubious claim about a supposedly in-the-books temperature increase and what is to be expected in some unknown future seems like a bit of headline grabbing, rife speculation.

The author states temperatures have risen by 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1970. He does not say where this is reputed to have occurred nor how the measurement was taken, verified and validated. That’s a whole lot of historically, unprecedented increase in temperature in an unprecedentedly short period of time.

Per widely circulated, pessimistic proclamations from the purveyors of climate alarmism, an increase in temperature of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius from the 1880 pre-industrial level is believed to be a no-turning-back tipping point. Despite the fact that, per published

It is more likely for our climate to be wetter when it’s warmer.

voters in the district. The incumbents responded that the cost to mail out ballots would be more than $500,000 and that was too expensive. $500,000 is less than 1% of a $50 million dollar budget. It’s even less than the percentage of people voting in the board election.

Even if I agreed that $500,000 was too much to spend on the election, there is a serious engagement problem when so few taxpayers get to vote for a board that gets to spend so much taxpayer money. I encourage all your readers to visit, ssprd.org/board-election, and request their absentee ballot before April 26. It’s the only way they can participate in this exclusive election and have a say in how their tax dollars are spent.

As I listened to several candidates make their case, it seemed to be much of the same that I was already used to from my limited engagement of being on the outside, looking in.

However, in about the middle of this process my attention was drawn to one of the candidates that spoke, that being Holly Kluth. What I then experienced was a bit apolitical as I heard her daughter speak about her mom.

So, for a few minutes I was invited into her family, learning about how she grew up and the positive influence that her mom, Holly Kluth, had on her life growing up. That resonated with me as it is my personal opinion that the family unit needs to be strengthened and I must have been subconsciously looking for some of those characteristics.

Aside from the family values that Holly’s daughter spoke about, it was then time for Holly herself to step to the podium and talk about what was important to her as someone who had previously served in the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

I was left of the strong feeling that she processes a rare combination of formal education, service within the department, and personal conviction that would greatly benefit residents of Douglas County.

For someone like myself, who historically used to run away from the political process, I left the gymnasium that Saturday afternoon feeling very encouraged that I now have a real people-driven candidate for sheriff that I could now support, knowing that my welfare as Douglas County resident, will be Holly’s highest priority, should she be elected Douglas County Sheriff.

Ms. Kane has invested over 14 years as a trailblazer, a leader and administrator in Douglas County education — twice that of Ms. Lemieux’s former tenure as a schoolteacher. Ms. Lemieux’s open bias and activism against charter schools is certainly contrary to her inclusive stance conveyed in her responses to a 2015 Colorado League of Charter Schools’ candidate survey when Lemieux was running for a seat on the DougCo BoE. Public schools, charter schools, magnet schools, online schools, private schools and home schooling all together reflect Douglas County families’ “deep understanding of the diverse educational needs of students.”

We should wish the best to Ms. Kane, a successful, experienced, Colorado-educated woman, in her role as superintendent. It’s well past time to stop prioritizing the operative and activist bickering, lawsuits, campaigning and sloganeering and focus on the students — no matter where they get their education.

Stop the arrogant ignorance As a Douglas County resident and small business person, I am hearing from many that the current political cabal that has long held control of our local government, and now our schools, shows sure signs of the all-dangerous “arrogant incompetence.”

Fearmongering by commissioners In response to the April 14 column “Collective bargaining a bad deal for counties and taxpayers” by the Douglas County commissioners: I rose to the top of my modest white-collar profession, and a comfortable retirement, on the backs of hourly workers, mostly young women. A specialized workforce requires a specialized salary and benefits program tailored to fit the needs of the employees. This resulted in top management employees being all women and some were in their mid-20s and most were promoted from within. These young women would have laughed at any attempt to unionize our workforce.

I read the union-bashing article four times, written by the Douglas County commissioners, and did not find one sentence that referenced the welfare of Douglas County employees. It was a crash course 101 of union-bashing and fearmongering (aka Trumpism), but nothing about a competitive salary and benefits program which will make the lives of county employees better. Until this happens, I will support unionization, tax increases or anything else that makes Douglas County the gold standard for county employees.

Boulder business offers unique approach to developing relationships with canine companions

oug and Elizabeth Simpson use the scientific technique of pressure and release to train dogs by developing a relationship with the animal by communicating in its natural form of language.

“It’s the technique in the Simpsons’ methodology,” said Cindy Heller, brand champion for Tenderfoot Natural Dog Training, which the couple cofounded in Boulder over 30 years ago. “The mother dogs are pack leaders that use the same technique of pressure and release to train their puppies that leave the pack.”

The Simpsons are former horse trainers and participated in competitive horse shows. Doug is a native of Colorado, and Elizabeth has lived in Colorado for about 40 years.

When the Simpsons were learning natural horsemanship, they raised about 100 animals on their property, such as dogs, cats, parrots, ferrets, turkeys, llamas and horses.

“We learned they all speak the same language and understand each other,” Elizabeth said. “It’s humans that have forgotten.”

The science they learned through natural horsemanship

working with famous “horse whisperers” started with three drills for young colts, and they found that the technique, with some tweaking, was effective with dogs.

The Simpsons said they discovered that many dog trainers were using ineffective tools.

“It didn’t seem to be changing the future of dogs and was not changing the behavior of numbers of dogs sent to shelters,” Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth said dogs can be trained without using all the harsh devices of shocking and pinching and pockets full of food.

“It’s about developing a relationship with the animals that last a lifetime,” she said. “We know what drill to use to fix it, which is very simple, essential and natural.”

Natural pressure-and-release training techniques include pressures to get the dog’s attention using a motivator such as verbal, emotional, visual, body language, tone, distance or energy. A pressure involves standing close to the dog, talking to them in a lower voice, making eye contact, tapping your hand and startling them with a finger snap or hand clap. A release involves stepping away from the dog, whispering, looking away from your dog and using a gentle touch and a warm presence.

When having a relationship with an animal, Doug said owners need to learn to understand most of their dog’s physical movements, which have meaning.

According to the Simpsons, hu-

mans and dogs understand each other through movement and eye contact.

“If you stroke them, it’s like mama washing them,” Elizabeth said. “It changes the animal’s brainwaves by calming them.

It’s hardwired into them. It’s the relationship of love, trust and respect.”

Doug said people were adopting dogs in greater numbers during the pandemic and could not handle behavior issues. COVID-19 made it worse, and many dogs were returned to shelters.

“The problem (was) people were home most of the time — they were not going to public places or taking the dog on a walk,” he said. “The dog got used to them being home and lacking socialization. When people start going back to work, it caused the dog to suffer from separation anxiety.

“Separation anxiety can cause a dog to be destructive and stressful,” Doug explained. “If they did not have aggression, they became more aggressive.”

Doug said another common problem during COVID was people giving their dogs too much free time or recess. It’s like sending a child to school with no structure or teacher, he said.

The dog’s behavior gets worse and worse, and they become very independent and don’t want to listen. The dog doesn’t learn patience. Instead, they run, chase, jump and bite. So they look for direction from their owner — the leader of the decision-maker in the world of recess.

“The right side of the brain is all adrenaline, which is the reactionary brain to react, jump and explode. With this type of energy, the dogs do whatever they want,” Doug said.

Doug said when you work with the dog, they’ll do what you ask.

Common chemicals released in the brain’s left side, such as serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin, immediately calm them.

“If I asked the dog to sit, those chemicals are releasing so engagement mentally is more tiring then the physical,” he said. “The physical walk is also very mental with stops and pace changes. It’s a good time for them and gets their attention.”

Seth Steele took Charlie, a Chihuahua poodle, to Tenderfoot Natural Dog Training to work on crate training and handling.

“I learned that I need to be with Charlie consistently and be the pack leader, and our family is a pack,” Steele said. “He’s sleeping in a crate, not in the bed anymore. We correct him when he makes noises, and it worked.

Doug recommends a minimum of

30 to 40 words with every physical action or a five-word vocabulary. Spend time together, then go back to work.

It’s a limited understanding and limited engagement. The more you work with them, the calmer they become, and you become more of a leader.

“It becomes so simple and subtle,” Doug said. “They are pretty obedient and do what you ask them to do.”

Amy Jablonski’s dog Poppy needed training. She bit Elizabeth in the face when Elizabeth tried to hold her during the first training session.

“I needed to change myself to be consistent with her training,” Jablonski said. “I took her to a birthday party with my relatives and three different dogs. I was nervous about how she would react with another dog or with one of our family members that may want to pet her.

She acted so well with no issues.”

‘Once On This Island’ is fairy-tale play Performance is good way to introduce theatre to young people

Performances of “Once On This Island” run through May 8 at Town Hall Arts Center in Littleton, and this musical, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid,” is one that’s a fine introduction to theatre for kids. The story is about a peasant girl who lives on one of the Caribbean islands and falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island.

Divided cultures keep them apart but the Island Gods decide to assist the heroine, Ti Moune (Camryn Nailah; Little Ti Moune, Sophia Stewart or Evan Duncan), as she seeks a way to reunite with her love, Daniel, played by Steffen Beal ...

The cast dances its way through this tale, directed by Betty Hart, with choreography by Christopher Page-Sanders, who skillfully moves this large cast as the story progresses.

A look at economic dysfunction

he economy appears to be at a crossroads. Is it inflation or recession? There is plenty of commentary to choose from supporting either position. Many wonder if it is possible for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates enough to curb inflation without causing a recession. Then we add in a Russian invasion into Ukraine and higher gas prices along with continued supply chain shortages. The economy is definitely in uncharted territory.

Interest rates have remained low since 2008, fueling the economy. Inflation is at a 40-year high according to Bloomberg. The cure for inflation is to raise rates but doing so could also cause a recession. The Federal Reserve is in a tricky place.

Bill Greiner, Chief Economist with Mariner Wealth Advisors, stated recently that there is only a 40% chance the economy will return to normalcy in 2022.

This is due to the growth expectation for GDP (Gross Domestic Product) cooling off. This is based on the Federal Reserve beginning to raise rates, along with continuing economic problems related to Patricia Kummer COVID-19. But he also believes inflation will come down as well. The 20-year average is 2.2 percent, and we are currently running close to 8%. As consumer expectations begin to soften and hopefully some supply chains open up, inflation is expected to decline before year end to around four percent.

Mr. Greiner sees other possibilities if the economy does not normalize: Stagflation or recession. Stagflation is where high inflation continues, and recession is where economic growth

declines. While neither of these are great choices, how the rest of this year unfolds will be telling.

If inflation persists and economic growth continues, we may be able to “grow” our way out. If interest rates rise too quickly and the money supply dries up, then GDP will likely decline. It will be difficult to have what the Federal Reserve likes to call a “soft landing,” where interest rates rise but economic growth continues to flourish.

There have been four recessions in the last 30 years¹ and they are considered a normal part of the business cycle. Recessions typically have high unemployment, which is the opposite of our current employment situation. This is why I call this a crossroad. The Fed action could point to a recession, but other economic indicators remain positive.

Currently there remains continued economic growth, solid corporate earnings, and low

unemployment. These are all good signs. The stock market may remain volatile as it digests all of these changes, such as continued interest rate hikes this year.

Investors should consider market movements as opportunities with the outlook of continued economic growth and low unemployment. But always have your emergency reserves and a wellbalanced portfolio to help during these unusual times. Interest rates will need to rise to return to normal in the 2% to 2.5% range.

These changes usually cause market volatility but that is a small price to pay to avoid recession.

Two Coloradans just returned from providing aid in Ukraine It’s not a matter of if they’ll go back again, but when

Now that Overchuk understands medical supplies, vehicles and infrared technology are among the most-needed items, he and his friends will raise the money to purchase those items, through their new fundraising organization, Ukraine Aid Fund.

Although his nerves were tested throughout the trip, Overchuk said, traveling back home has helped him face reality, which he could not do from Colorado.

“When you are outside, you want reality to be different, and you have this internal conflict of what should be and what is reality,” he said. “But when you are there, reality sinks in and you realize you can do something to help, but you can’t fix it on your own. That helps a little bit, to just find yourself, and do your part.”

Taras Overchuk of Highlands Ranch brought his mother and mother-in-law from Ukraine to stay with him in Colorado in March.

Overchuk, most of whose extended family is living in Ukraine, spent two weeks in his native country last month volunteering to help family members and refugees to safety. “There’s a little bit of difference from people who have relatives in the country, to people just from watching from outside. from Kosovo in Krakow, Poland, to begin the aid effort. But when the group headed to the nearest border crossing, they were met by Ukrainian border patrol guards who would only honor Mares’ U.S. passport.

Mares went on to conduct aid tasks in Ukraine as planned, while his colleagues from Kosovo helped women and children as they crossed from Poland.

While there, Mares found an animal clinic providing vaccinations and medications to abandoned animals. A worker at the clinic led him to a volunteer organization where a woman there explained that refugees often take their small dogs with them when they flee but many larger dogs are left behind.

“A lot of dogs are being left behind in the Lviv area, and are just running around, without food or shelter,” Mares said.

“This lady is trying to gather as many of those (animals) as possible, and putting them in foster homes, hoping someday to reunite them with their owners.”

Mares’ translator, who studied at University of Kharkiv, in the second-largest city in Ukraine and one of the hardest hit areas since the war began, said many students have been stranded there since the war began. Before he returned to the U.S., Mares distributed $2,000 to students there. By the end of his trip, Mares said he and his colleagues had helped more than 20 families in Poland and Ukraine.

‘People started ignoring sirens’ It took more than 12 hours for Overchuk to get across the Poland-Ukraine border. As he entered his native country, thousands of people were standing in line hoping to exit as it began snowing.

“That feeling was striking to me because there were mostly women and children, and it was pretty cold and the amount of people I saw, I assumed it was a couple of days they were standing there — because the ability of the border patrol to get people through was limited and the amount of people wanting to get out was more than they could actually get through,” he said.

When Overchuk finally reached Lviv, it was hard to find restaurants serving food. Many of the larger restaurants, such as McDonald’s, had closed and moved their operations to the border to help feed refugees. But there were times that the city looked more or less normal, he said. Trams were working and people occasionally walked the streets.

When he reached Kyiv, on the way to visit relatives, the streets were mostly empty. “The concerning thing is that people started ignoring sirens because they were just tired of hiding,” he said. “And it was concerning because it may result in more casualties. After a strike hits a building, some people may be outside, rather than hiding somewhere. Since the sirens are

almost constant, people got fatigued, and started ignoring it.”

At checkpoints on his way to visit family members, military members seemed skeptical of Overchuk, often checking his car and asking why he was driving on back roads in a war zone.

A few times, Overchuk called relatives, who backed up his story to help him get through to visit them.

Most of Overchuk’s family members are still in Ukraine, and have not left because they fear their husbands and fathers would be drafted into the war, if they tried to escape.

When he finally saw some of his cousins in Ukraine, Overchuk said he felt he had accomplished something major, just by being present.

“It was helpful for me, and for them, to feel more connected and supported,” he said. “Not a lot of people are entering Ukraine. More people are leaving than entering, and having some courage to go there inspires some of the people inside. I hope I brought some courage with me to them as well.”

While in Ukraine, Overchuk’s family in Colorado was worried about him being in a war zone,

which — at times — made him want to leave. But when he’s in Colorado, he worries about his family in Ukraine.

“One way or another, there is no good place to be,” he said.

Overchuk said he wishes there were stronger policies in place to help Ukrainian refugees immigrate to the U.S. faster. In late March, the Biden administration announced it would accept up to 100,000 refugees from Ukraine.

As the war drags on, Overchuk said he hopes people around the world will donate to the Ukrainian military and aid organizations helping people there. In Mariupol alone, a southeastern city decimated by the war, it will take years and untold sums of money to rebuild, Overchuk said.

Amid the devastation and uncertainty, the Ukrainian government is encouraging people who can work, to resume their professional duties to help stimulate the struggling economy. Construction workers aren’t yet focused on rebuilding but they’re conducting cleanup efforts across the country, Overchuk said. Small restaurants and cafes in some parts of Ukraine are reopening to provide a sense of normalcy for residents. “It’s definitely helping,” he said.

Overchuk said, though he’s exhausted and doesn’t sleep much, contributing to humanitarian efforts from afar has helped him cope.

“You just see the ways you can influence and help as much as you can,” he said. “But it’s still hard.”

Change the thought and change the outcome

L

ast week fans were treated to some great golf as we watched The Masters golf tournament. There were lots of incredible shots made over the four days of play, including some spectacular shots from so many of the players.

Although they were not winners, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa both holed out their bunker shots on the 18th hole. It was a magical and memorable moment.

A weekend golfer myself, I really enjoyed this year’s Masters tournament. Something I observe when watching professional golfers is the way that they manage the course. And part of the course management is what is referred to as the “swing thoughts” of the golfer before each shot. For some reason, this part of the game really stood out to me this year as I realized that although we are all not professional or even amateur golfers, our thinking most times will determine and drive our actions.

In golf, the swing thought will determine the outcome of the shot. If the thought is positive, they can almost see the ball

going into the hole before even swinging the club.

Conversely, if it is a negative thought, they can almost visualize the ball going into the pond before they hit the ball.

It’s funny because some amateur Michael Norton golfers when faced with a shot where they must clear a creek or a pond, will take out an older ball just in case it goes into the water. They are planting the negative thought in their mind before they even take the shot.

Let’s look at the tasks, projects and conversations that we have on any given day. If we see a task or project as being too difficult, doubts will creep into our mind, and we will continually put it off. The task or project doesn’t go away, it just keeps getting bumped down the list, creating anxiety and stress because we know that at some point, it still must get done.

If our pre-task or pre-project “swing thought” is positive, We are more than likely to get after

it and get it off the to-do list.

It’s no different with conversations. Whether the conversation will be a disagreement or conflict, or if is just a difficult subject that we must deal with, our pre-conversation swing thoughts are critically important. If our thoughts are nervous, negative, or angry, those thoughts will manifest themselves in the conversation. And we know that the opposite is true as well. If we go into the conversation or challenging topic that we must discuss with a confident and positive outlook, we are more than likely going to have a positive outcome, giving us even greater confidence as we move forward throughout our day.

Is this true 100% of the time?

No, there are always exceptions. We could have the greatest positive attitude and still make mistakes. When faced with a difficult conversation, no matter how confident we are and hopeful that the outcome will be what we desire, we still may walk away with no resolution or compromise. But we do know what Zig Ziglar said to be true, “A positive mental attitude alone will not allow you to do

anything, but a positive mental attitude will allow you to do everything much better than a negative attitude will.”

We have all heard that we become what we think about.

Or if we think about something long enough and powerfully enough, sooner or later it will come to pass. We also know that the most important and most powerful story that we tell is the story we tell ourselves. Those stories show up in our thinking, so why not make them positive, encouraging, and filled with the expectations and outcomes that we desire?

Fellows scores 5 goals in tight match Valor edges Mountain Vista 14-13 in boys lacrosse

Senior midfielder/attacker Gunnar Fellows led Valor Christian to a big boys lacrosse win on April 15.

Fellows scored five goals, including two in a decisive fourth quarter spurt to help Valor secure a 14-13 win over Mountain Vista in a game played at Valor Christian.

It was a matchup of the two best boys lacrosse teams in the state, at least according to the CHSAANow. com poll.

Valor came into the game ranked second behind top-ranked Vista. After the victory, the Eagles are 8-1 and 2-0 in league play. The Golden Eagles are 9-1 and 3-1 in the conference.

“Gunnar Fellows is our solo captain,” said Valor Head Coach Josh Hoffman. “He’s committed to West Point so he will be at Army next year. He’s a great leader. He does a good job of leading our offense and keeping our morale high.”

Fellows scored the first goal of the game and, more importantly, came through along with Connor Garrison in the fourth quarter to provide Valor with the winning margin.

Valor kept possession for two minutes until Mountain Vista narrowed the gap to one goal with 31 seconds

showing on the clock.

“It was really important that we kept possession at the end of the game to keep the pressure off the defense,” said Fellows, who leads the team with 38 goals and 43 points. “It was really a great job for our defense giving us the ball on offense, trusting us and giving us opportunities. It was really good that we controlled the tempo of the game. It was a big win for sure. We enjoyed the win for one night but its on to the next game. It’s a long season and once we start playoffs we’ll probably see them (Vista) again.”

Besides Fellows, Garrison, Liam Goodwin and Alex Rismani each had two goals. Baden Brown had a goal and three assists.

“We try to focus on always winning the ground ball battles,” said Hoffman. “If you win the ground ball battles you have possession.

Mountain Vista is a good team, a scrappy team and I’m sure we will see them again.”

Sophomore Brown and freshman Harry Luong each picked up five ground balls for Valor.

“We been trying to focus on ourselves to make sure we’re doing the little things right,” added Hoffman.“Our coaching staff keeps emphasizing to get better.”

Junior Ethan Pearson had four goals for Vista and senior Dillon Pless had three.

Valor Christian’s Kaley Kakac scored just one goal but she and teammates Rachel Pallo and Eliza Osburn made a big difference in a Top 5 game between the Eagles and Cherry Creek on April 9.

Valor, ranked second in the CHSAANow.com state poll, put together a surge in the second half to defeat No 3 Cherry Creek 19-16 in a game played at the Valor Christian field.

The Eagles improved to 5-2 on the season while Creek suffered its second loss in six games.

Kakac, a junior midfielder, took all the draws for Valor and won a majority of them to help the Eagles keep possession of the ball.

“I felt like I did good on the draws and stepped up to try to help our team by getting the ball and getting possession,” said Kakac.

“You have to work with your teammates in the circle and be able to communicate with them about what’s going on and getting the ball.

“Our midfielders, Rachel Palllo, Eliza Osburn and Kaley Kakac, turned it on the second half and they knew if we had possession of

the ball we’d have a good chance of winning,” Ellis said.

“Draws are important especially at this level because there is no shot clock. So whoever controls the draws can basically control the game. I give credit to those three because they are the main draw team. If they win the draw, we have possession and can score.

It the most important thing in lacrosse, having possession of the ball and winning draws.”

Tremaroli also spoke highly of her team.

‘I’m really proud of our girls,” the Creek coach said. “I thought we fought from the first whistle until the last whistle. Valor is a great team.

“Draws are very important and Valor is good at winning the draws.

So that was a big challenge that we had to overcome. Sometimes we did it and sometimes we didn’t and I think that’s probably what the game came to was their ability to control the draws.”

Junior Reagan Digby had five goals and two assists for seven points to pace the Eagles. Eliza Osburn had four goals and three assists for seven points. Courntey Kakac and Amanda Stevens also had four goals for Valor.

Molly Threlkeld and Lilly Assini each had three goals for the Bruins.

Eaglecrest’s boys volleyball team showed Cherry Creek that it is tough to be the top-ranked team in the state.

The Raptors, which lost 3-0 to the Bruins in a March 24 match, dominated the No. 1 Bruins in a 3-0 victory on April 14 in the Creek gum.

Eaglecrest, ranked second in the CHSAANow.com poll, swept the Bruins with 25-18, 25-22 and 25-16 set wins.

Cherry Creek’s record dipped to 16-2 on the season and 6-1 in the Centennial League. Eaglecrest improved to 11-3 overall and 4-3 in the league.

“Before tonight in our minds we beat Eaglecrest in straight sets last time so couldn’t we do it again,” said Creek Coach Cara Quayle. “We just need to have the mentality that no match is going to be easy. Every team we play is going to put up a fight and we’re not just going to be in the game. We have to fight for it. Eaglecrest showed that we just aren’t going to be handed the game.

We have to go out and fight for every point every time we play and nothing is going to be handed to us.”

Senior Tyler Van Hare, who had four kills and four digs in the final match statistics, agreed.

“It was only our second loss of the year,” he said. “We’re going to go to practice and get better. We go into the next game, forgetting all about our record. We are 0-0 and hope for another win. I feel we’re

a better team than last year. As far as skill we’re about the same but this year we’ve got a tenacity that is unbridled.”

Senior Josh Guthrie had nine kills and 19 service receives to pace the Bruins while Miles Mante had five kills. Senior Jordan Cardenas had 18 assists for the shorthanded Bruins.

“We had two kids that were out with COVID,” said Quayle.“We knew it was going to be different but we still wanted to fight for it. It didn’t go the way we expected or planned.

We’re 16-2 and if anything it just lights a fire for us and we want to get after it. Next week we’ll have our regular lineup back and be ready to try to turn it around, I’ve got a great group of guys and it’s be a great season so far”.
