SPORTS BRIEFS Postponements Frederick’s girls soccer matchk against Weld Central was postponed to 6 p.m. Friday, April 8. Fort Lupton’s track meet at Weld Central was canceled March 18 because of snow. Frederick’s March 18 baseball game against Riverdale Ridge was called off because snow. The make-up date is 3 p.m. Monday, March 28. FHS’ second rty to play a girls golf tournament at Eagle Trace Golf Course (the Chilly Chili Invitational) was snowed out March 19. Girls softball The deadline to join the Fort Lupton Recreation Center’s fastpitch girls softball leagues (9- to 14-year-olds) is Saturday, March 26, at a cost of $80. Frederick Feeder 5K Frederick High School’s student council is hosting the first Frederick Feeder 5K and 400-meter fun run Saturday, April 16. Like a lot of people, Fort Lupton baseball coach Jackie Campbell is hoping for warmer weather. Unlike others, Campbell wants the warm weather so his Bluedevils can get outside for practices. That’s not been the case for much of the early part of the season. That and the fact some of the multisport athletes just finished their winter sports seasons and haven’t been able to practice. “We need to be more aggressive, but they haven’t seen enough live pitching,” Campbell said. “That’s been the problem in either gym (the FLHS gym or Butler Elementary). We haven’t been able to get out and face live pitching. That makes it harder.” Lyons’ Lions turned back Fort Lupton 13-4 in six innings on March 16. The game was called because of darkness. “We started out well but got into trouble walking batters,” Campbell said. FLHS pitchers issued 17 walks against the Lions. “That’s what hurts. The boys are embarrassed. But they fought back.” FLHS loaded the bases in the fourth inning and scored one run, thanks to a passed ball. FLHS’ Hunter Harris poked a two-run double in the fifth to score Donovan Birmingham and Domonic Chavez. Harris scored on a Lions’ error. FLHS loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but Lyons relief pitcher Wyatt Waters struck out the side. “It was a mixed bag,” Campbell said. “A lot of guys who hadn’t played or played other sports .. this is their first time on the field. I’m proud of them. We’re going to take spring break, come back fresh.” Campbell likes the senior class that dots the roster this spring. “Zavion (Zavion Chavez), catching. Manny (Manny Sandoval) pitching. He had a rough start. That’s his first outing,” Campbell said. “We have a good group of guys. We’re not game-ready yet. But we will be.” FLHS starts the post-spring break part of the schedule with a record of 0-2. “We showed we had character. We didn’t quit, and everybody’s freezing,” Campbell said. The game finished in a light drizzle. “I’m very proud of them for that. We’ll get better. I promise you that.”

S P O R T S SCORECARD Fort Lupton HS Baseball Fort Lupton opened up the new season on the short end of a 15-0, four-inning game at Brighton High School March 14. No stats were available for either team. Girls soccer Denver School of Science-Technology/Byers shaded Fort Lupton 3-2 in the Bluedevils’ home and seasonopener March 14. No stats were available for either team. Boys volleyball Denver School of Science-Technology/Byers outlasted Fort Lupton 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-13 in Fort Lupton March 14. Jesus Vasquez had 13 kills for the Bluedevils. Kaidyn Taylor added five. John Geary served up four aces, while Javier Chavez and Pedro Rosales added three. No stats were available for DSST-Byers. Girls tennis Eaton shut out the Bluedevils 7-0 in Fort Lupton March 15. All seven matches lasted the minimum of two sets. “The scores may not have gone our way,” said FLHS coach Christy Blanchard. “But it was a great learning experience with the rest of the season to grow into.” Frederick High School Girls soccer
Erie shut out Frederick 4-0 on the Warriors’ pitch March 14. Leah Price, Brooklyn Vigil, Lucy Webster and Ava McGehan scored the Tigers’ goals. No stats were available for Frederick. Baseball Riverdale Ridge beat Frederick 12-1 in five innings March 15 on the Warriors’ field. Ty Thompson and Elijah Lofton had two hits and two RBIs for the Ravens. Luke Burley had three RBIs on the strength of a pair of base hits. Brayden Johnson had the Warriors’’ only hit, and Brendan Gouchanour had Frederick’s only RBI. Girls tennis Naia Maldonado (No. 3 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of Ali Davis and Hailey Simmons picked up Frederick’s victories in a 5-2 loss at Severance March 15. Girls golf Zoe Millard was Frederick’s team medalist at the Denver Public Schools Invitational at City Park Golf Course March 15. She fired a 106. Ella Hoople carded a 109, and Makayla Miller finished with a 110. The Warriors finished 12th in the team standings. Track and field WINDSOR -- Garrett Colvin took third in the boys high jump at the Murry Kula Invitational at Windsor High School March 19. His top height was 6-2. Isabella Hewitt was sixth in the girls triple jjmp with a top distance of 32-9 3/4.
