County’s new health department to see familiar faces in leadership Tri-County Health staff named to key roles BY ROBERT TANN RTANN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

As the clock ticks for the TriCounty Health Department, which is set to dissolve Dec. 31, much of its

leadership will see a new chapter after Arapahoe County announced it would bring on staff for key roles in its new, self-serving health department. “Each individual we’ve hired has a deep understanding of the unique public health needs of Arapahoe County,” said Jennifer Ludwig, Arapahoe’s new public health director, who served as deputy director

for Tri-County. “Their work at TriCounty Health Department in the coming months will be instrumental to the continuance of services for residents through the end of the year.” The announcement, which came July 8, marks a major milestone for a county pursuing an aggressive — and unprecedented — timeline to establish health services for its

roughly 650,000 residents by the beginning of next year. Penny Grande will serve as the new health department’s deputy director and will begin working full-time with Arapahoe County this month. Grande served as director of nursing for Tri-County, overseeing daily operations of the agency’s SEE COUNTY, P3

family housing complex in Englewood on a lot near West Oxford Avenue and South Navajo Street. The property is approximately 8.4 acres and currently is home to businesses like Sam’s Automotive Reconditioning Center, located at 1314 W. Oxford Ave. Development plans have been in progress for about a year, said Phil Workman, a partner at The Pachner Company, which handles community engagement for the development.

Soon after the Cherry Creek School District in Arapahoe County announced it would stop designating valedictorians in its high schools, the criticism started pouring in. “The pursuit of excellence has suffered another blow,” wrote George Brauchler, a former Arapahoe County district attorney, in a column for The Denver Post. “The crusade against meritocracy, and for mediocrity, in our schools reached a new level,” the Denver Gazette news outlet’s editorial board wrote. Cherry Creek’s decision even landed a story in national and international news outlet Newsweek, with other media coverage mentioning it too. The practice of honoring valedictorians is one the district’s high school principals had discussed “for many years,” the principals wrote in a letter to parents.
