Goats munch to lower fire risk

Spring Valley Ranch community brings in 1,200 critters to clear brush BY CHANCY J. GATLIN-ANDERSON SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

The Spring Valley Ranch community in the northern Elizabeth area has adopted a natural approach to fire mitigation this year. Instead of plowing down the tall grasses to reduce the risk of brush fires, the community has hired 1,200 goats to take on the job. Beginning May 1, the 1,200-goat herd descended upon Spring Valley Ranch and stayed for nearly two weeks to work as much of the open brush land as they could. SEE GOATS, P2

The Town of Elizabeth Historic Advisory Board met on April 18 to discuss the results of the Historic Preservation Survey that took place throughout early April. The survey received 130 responses, about a quarter of them from within the town limits. “I think overall we had a really good turnout on the survey. I did not expect to get 130 responses,” said Zach Higgins, Main Street Program manager and planner/ project manager for the town. “This is statistically significant for our population.” The survey was intended to gauge resident knowledge and interest regarding downtown Elizabeth and its historic sites, which could help shape possible changes to the municipal code and impact the future of a potential historic district in the town. In an April Elbert County News article, Higgins said that if there was positive feedback from the survey, there is a plan to designate a Town of Elizabeth Historic District around the end of this year, with much opportunity for public comment throughout the process. Below are the results of the Historic Preservation Survey as discussed at the meeting. Results include applicable comment from Higgins. SEE SURVEY, P4
