Rhonda Olsen is chosen as new member

It has been two years since the Elizabeth School District has celebrated its homecoming traditions, due to COVID-19 restrictions. The town of Elizabeth was bustling throughout the week of Oct. 4 in excited celebration of the Elizabeth High School Homecoming. The week ended with the much-anticipated homecoming parade and the impressive win against Alameda High School in the homecoming football game. The homecoming parade took place on Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. The sidewalks along Main Street were crammed with eager families and little children awaiting the parade floats to arrive. SEE HOMECOMING, P18

comparison, reading proficiency among fifth graders fell roughly 1 percentage point to 47.2% during that period. And 12% of districts had less than 25% of students meeting or exceeding expectations in reading. One Keystone center expert warned of a “learning loss” that could hobble students well into the future. “I think the limited data we have sends a clear message,” said Berrick Abramson, senior policy director and director of the education

With an election now underway to fill three board seats, the Elizabeth School District Board of Directors filled yet another seat — that of former director John Guttenberg — on Oct. 11 at their regular business session. Rhonda Olsen was chosen to fill the position. Guttenberg, who was elected in 2019, resigned effective Aug. 23. Prior to the selection, six applicants spoke at the Oct. 4 meeting, each expressing their goals for the Elizabeth School District and fielding questions from the sitting directors. The applicants were Roxanne Aviles, Kevin Combest, David Eddy, Michael Hodson, Ben Meade and Olsen. Eddy is a candidate in the board election that ends Nov. 2. The other applicants are not on the ballot. Prior to the official nomination at the Oct. 11 meeting, some of the board directors commented on the quality of the candidates. “I thought all the candidates did a very good job,” said board President Carol Hinds. “We had an impressive group of candidates.” Board Treasurer Kim Frumveller mirrored Hinds’ sentiment, saying that “the energy from everyone was fantastic in their statements.” Board Vice President Cary Karcher began the process with his nomination of Olsen, expressing his reasoning as to why she was the best

Elizabeth School Board fills vacancy

Policy Center, a nonprofit research group, found that math test scores plummeted for many students across the state, falling at an even faster rate than the state’s longbeleaguered literacy rate. In the 4th grade, for example, only 28.5% of students met or exceeded grade-level expectations, down 5 percentage points from 33.6% in 2019, becoming “a real point of concern statewide,” the report noted. Test results from this year also show that 35% of districts saw fewer than 20% of students meet or exceed expectations in math. By
