Have you ever wondered what those large, netted enclosures are at the corner of Elbert County Roads 13 and 158? If you look closely, you will see large, vibrantly colored parrots, living joyful lives within the grounds of The Gabriel Foundation. According to its website, The Gabriel Foundation is a “parrot welfare organization providing for the complete physical, psychological, and environmental well-being of the parrots in our care.” The foundation was founded in 1995 by lifelong parrot lover and avian consultant Julie Weiss Murad. The foundation was first based in Aspen, but moved to the rolling hills of Elizabeth in 2005. Currently, the property houses roughly 400 SEE PARROTS, P12

As the number of patients continues to increase, Children’s Hospital Colorado has announced a cutback in services at locations across the metro area due to staffing shortages. While the south campus in Highlands Ranch will remain open with all services, services at other facilities such as Wheat Ridge and Parker were reduced or closed. Sarah Davis, Children’s Hospital media relations specialist, said hospitals specializing in treating children across the U.S. are struggling for a variety of reasons. Due to the continued challenges, the news release provided by Davis said Children’s Hospital will be consolidating services wherever possible to continue providing efficient and effective healthcare. As of Sept. 23, Children’s Hospital made the following changes: • Temporary suspension of afterhours virtual urgent care services. • Temporary closure of the urgent care services at Children’s Colorado’s Wheat Ridge and uptown locations. • Temporary suspension of Children’s Colorado’s services at Parker Adventist Hospital, resulting in a temporary closure of this location. Davis said besides the urgent care center keeping regular hours in Highlands Ranch, the emergency room will remain open 24/7. Cara Welch, director of communications for the Colorado Hospital Association (CHA), said the recent announcement from Children’s Hospital is no surprise as hospitals across the state and nation are struggling to maintain staffing levels as patient needs are increasing. Welch said from the start of the pandemic, CHA has focused on the three S’s — Space, Supplies and Staffing. While bed space and supplies are not the issue they were a year ago, hospital staffing is a major problem, she said. Welch said there are a variety of reasons hospitals and medical organizations are seeing a shortage. While COVID cases continue to surge and take up funding and energy, she said hospitals are unable to get traveling nurses and added resources. “Other factors really driving the current conditions in the healthcare workforce is burnout,” Welch said. “Health care workers are either tired and taking a much-needed break or they are leaving the industry altogether.” Davis said, “Staffing challenges are being seen across many business sectors, not just healthcare. However, regarding healthcare workers, it is likely a result of several factors. Health care workers have been at the forefront of the pandemic for the past year and a half, and everyone’s resilience is at a low.” Welch said it is a perfect storm of issues that will continue to be a problem as COVID vaccine mandate deadlines have now approached. With Oct. 1 being the first established deadline set by the state for healthcare workers to get the first round of the vaccine, Welch said healthcare organizations statewide have a lot of stress and anxiety over

what will happen. Healthcare workers are mandated to have the second vaccine by Oct. 31. Welch said current state regulations require hospitals and medical organizations to be 100% percent compliant. This rule is unattainable, she said, with religious and other exemptions. Welch said CHA is working with the state to get the mandate decreased to 90% compliance, which is what is required for the influenza vaccine among healthcare workers. Currently, Welch said, each individual medical organization will be required to make sure healthcare workers comply with the vaccination mandates. As they start the process of determining who is following the state and federal rules, Welch said each organization will take action as required. “As healthcare providers, all hospitals want their staff to get the vaccinations,” Welch said. “But there are always exemptions, and that 100% threshold should be reduced. Our hospitals and the healthcare industry have really been put in a difficult spot.” Davis said the Children’s Hospital believes in the vaccinations. “Children’s Hospital Colorado believes vaccines save lives,” she said. “Requiring our team to be vaccinated affirms our commitment to the safety and care of our team members, patients and their families.” The announcement for Children’s Hospital to cut services came after a summer where administrators have expressed concerns over the growing demand for youth medical care. Mental health issues continues to rise, COVID cases have increased with the delta variant and an unexpectedly high number of respiratory viruses have continued. Welch said, like Children’s Hospital, hospitals across the state are reporting not just an increase in unvaccinated COVID patients, but also in mental health cases and respiratory virus cases. All of this is happening as hospitals are gearing up for the unknowns of an upcoming flu season, she said. ever have the choice to attend a community college for free, no strings attached. Democrats in Congress are currently hashing out the details of an ambitious multi-trillion-dollar budget bill, dubbed the Build Back Better Act, which at press time included a provision for universal tuition-free community college for every American, a cornerstone of President Joe Biden’s economic agenda. “I’m completely for it,” Smith said of the proposal. “If we’re going to require people who live here in America to contribute to society but they have to go to college to do so, I don’t think that we should be making people pay.” Removing barriers At ACC — based in Littleton, with campuses in Parker and Castle Rock — the idea of free community college is exciting for some faculty members. “I’m a huge fan of the idea,” said Monica Fuglei, chair of the English department at ACC. For Fuglei, it was a scholarship that allowed her to attend college when she was an undergraduate. “I often tell my students that was the difference between me sitting in the chair that I sit in today and perhaps being elsewhere in the world,” she said. Fuglei said Congress’ proposal would be a massive step toward removing the economic barriers of

October 14, 2021 higher education. Even at a college like ACC, which offers lower-cost annual tuition students can still struggle financially. ACC’s tuition for residents this year was $3,680, but after piling on books, room and board and other expenses, the price for a degree can jump to more than $23,000. For non-residents, it can be up to $31,606. Fuglei said she has known numerous students who have had to drop out, often because they could no longer afford the cost. “Those are really tough days,” she said. “I have had students for whom the cost of college became too big … and that’s always very heartbreaking for me.” But the prospects waiting for students on the other side of their two-year degree could mean a world of difference, said Fuglei. Along with the ability to pay for just two years of education for a bachelor’s degree, as opposed to four, those with an associate degree are often met with more jobs and greater financial stability. “(Students) often leave our school and go straight into industry jobs in the area,” Fuglei said. “That’s a big impact on an institution, and the idea of expanding that to me is really exciting.” Smith, the ACC student, said his time in college is setting him on a path for success. “I love ACC … I feel like I’m getting a valid, solid education,” he said, adding that free community college could help further remove the stigma that he feels still surrounds two-year education. “When I was growing up, the focus was on people going to the

four-years, CU, CSU or even out of state,” Smith said. “But (community college) can really help steer you where to go and you aren’t in an incredible amount of debt.” But the road toward free community college remains murky. ‘Devil’s in the details’ Congressional Democrats at press time remained at odds over the final price tag of the Build Back Better Act, which is expected to receive no Republican support. This means the bill will have to pass through a special process known as reconciliation, which requires nearly all Democrats to vote in favor of it. A date for when the bill will be brought to a vote has yet to be solidified, although lawmakers are aiming for one within weeks. Because of this, the final de-

tails of the proposal are likely to change, including those regarding free community college. For Stephanie Fujii, president of ACC, there are many questions about the proposal that still need answers. “The challenge, like everything, is the devil’s in the details,” she said. “Just because community college is free doesn’t mean there isn’t a cost that’s incurred. How we’re going to be able to manage that as a state in Colorado is going to be something I look forward to.” About 61% of ACC’s funding comes from tuition, according to Fujii, who said “that’s a significant portion to be able to come up with.” The U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, as part of its role in crafting the legislation SEE COLLEGE, P5

of the budget bill, has already approved $111 billion to fund free community college beginning in the fiscal year 2023 and lasting for five years until 2028. But that money alone will not be enough to fully fund colleges. States will have to make up the difference in order to provide their students with no-cost tuition. In a state like Colorado, that poses some difficulty. According to Joe Garcia, chancellor for the Colorado Community College System, the federal law currently being drafted is based off national tuition averages, but Colorado’s tuition costs slightly exceed the national average. This means for schools like ACC, Colorado would need to spend more money to subsidize tuition under the current proposal. Garcia said he and other education leaders from around the country have been in talks with the federal government to find ways to address state budgetary constraints and ensure that the legislation, should it pass, works for everybody. Despite the hurdles, Garcia said he is committed to championing free community college for all Coloradans. “We need to change our expectations for what a minimum education should be, and we should be prepared as a society to pay for it,” Garcia said.

Students see opportunity For high school students debating their future, free community college could open doors. “It would be great,” said 17-yearold Elmer Julian “EJ” Herra, a senior at Littleton High School. Herra said he has thought about attending ACC and then transferring to a university to complete a bachelor’s degree. But he fears the full cost of four-year education is too high and is now mulling trade school. But if ACC should become free as part of Biden and Democrats’ budget proposal, Herra said he would be able to fulfill his ambitions of gaining a bachelor’s degree. Nate Coine, an 18-year-old senior at Options Secondary Program, said free community college could mean the difference between how much he is burdened by student loan debt. “I want to have an education, have a career and not be tied down monetarily by debt,” said Coine, who is also planning to transfer after two years at ACC to attain a bachelor’s. “If (free community college) is a

possibility, that would be phenomenal,” he said. Still, despite wide public support for the proposal, free community college for the coming years is far from a done deal. Acknowledging that they will receive no support from Republican lawmakers, Senate and House Democrats are rallying their own members to vote in favor of the Build Back Better Act. But more conservative Democrats in both chambers have said they will not support it unless the bill’s price tag is heavily reduced, meaning certain provisions, like free community college, could be cut. Herra, the Littleton High School senior, said if that happens, it would dim students’ educational futures. “The fact that they gave them hope and now they’re taking the hope away from them is just kind of sad,” he said. Smith, the ACC student, is hopeful the legislation will pass and that it will support more students like him to pursue degrees, regardless of their situation. “Everybody should have the same access to education,” he said.

As part of celebrating its 80th year as an organization, Colorado Press Women (CPW) recently recognized women from four Colorado Community Media (CCM) newspapers who were employed by or owned the publications, dating back to the 1940s. The women were also original members of CPW. CCM honorees include: Co-publisher Katherine Bemis of the Littleton Independent Owner and publisher Vera West Parson for the Golden Transcript Owner and publisher Mary H. Isham and editor Lucille Hastings of the Brighton Blade Co-publisher C.A. of the Fort Lupton Press

CPW also paid tribute to Daisy Baber, a longtime columnist with the Lyons Recorder. Accepting the certificates on behalf of CCM during the Oct. 2 hybrid meeting was new publisher Linda Shapley. Like the women being recognized by CPW, Shapley brings decades of newspaper experience to CCM. “I’m honored to continue the news leadership that these remarkable journalists helped begin 80 years ago,” Shapley said. “As the original founders said, ‘Press women have a weapon to shape the peace or destruction of the world,’ and I aim to use that weapon responsibly to build up the next generation of journalists and create stronger communities across the Front Range.” Shapley is referring to the early days of CPW in 1941 when it became an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), which was established in 1938. In recruiting CPW members, on the eve of the U.S. entry into World War II, NFPW founder Bertha Bless said, “Press women have the opportunity of the century

to create a thinking America that can lead the world out of its present chaos. We must save not only the right of the press but also Americans. Grassroots journalism represented in small town and country newspapers doesn’t know its own power. Press women have a weapon to shape the peace of de-

struction of the world.” Today, CPW is a diverse organization of professional communicators, both men and women, who are reporters, editors, broadcasters, public relations practitioners, publishers, advertising and marketing practitioners, college communications educators,

graphic designers, photographers, freelance writers and others. “Looking back 80 years at the state of Colorado Press Women, what impresses me most is that 13 of our charter members were publishers and/or editors or their small-town newspapers — strong women,” said CPW President Sandy Nance. “It’s no wonder that equality for women has been as basic an expectation of our membership as our support for the First Amendment.” Early on, CPW focused on establishing rural libraries. Today, Nance said CPW works to help people sort fact from fiction on the Internet. With the emergence of teleconferencing and Zoom, Nance said CPW will focus on increasing membership throughout all of Colorado and not just newspapers along the Front Range. Today, Colorado Community Media continues to grow, focusing on the importance of community journalism. The media company currently owns 24 community newspapers in Adams, Arapahoe, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Jefferson and Weld counties.

Women still behind in breast cancer screenings Doctors warn cases are worse when symptoms are ignored BY THELMA GRIMES TGRIMES@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Just over two years after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, Suzi McCumber continues to stress the importance of regular screenings. If McCumber had not gotten the recommended mammogram and treatment, her doctors said there is no way she would have survived more than a year. McCumber, a Littleton-area resident, has remained positive throughout her treatment process. In high spirits, she happily reported that after more than a year of chemotherapy and radiation, she has moved on to the final stages of treatment, which is taking a pill for a few years to keep the cancer from coming back. “I will continue to take this pill and do whatever the doctors tell me to do,” said the 67-year-old. “I just can’t stress enough how important it is for women to continue getting those screenings and tests. back in my pectoral muscle.” Last year, while McCumber was receiving treatment, UCHealth Dr. Radhika Acharya-Leon, section chief for medical oncology at Highlands Ranch Hospital, said had McCumber not been persistent in finding a place to do the biopsy during a pandemic and move treatment forward, given the aggressive form of breast cancer she had, she would not have survived long. Since 2020, Acharya-Leon said doctors have become increasingly concerned with how women were putting off mammograms and recommended pap smears due to fear of catching COVID. With the nation coming through the second COVID wave caused by the delta variant, HealthOne Dr. Laura Hafertepen said the medical community’s concerns from last year are carrying over. Because of the hesitancy to get screenings, Hafertepen said, when women are getting the original diagnosis the disease has already progressed to stages 2 or 3. With regular screenings, she said, doctors can catch cancer at stage 1 or zero. When breast cancer is caught in an early stage, Hafertepen said the prognosis and the treatment is a lot better. Hafertepen said women are slowly getting back on track with mammograms and pap smears, but the pandemic has caused a backlog. “We are still trying to make up for a significant dip from last year,” she said. Hafertepen said it is not just a problem doctors along the Front Range are seeing — the problem is nationwide. The Prevent Cancer Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, released the results of a survey in August where 2,003 women between the ages of 21 and 60 were surveyed. According to the results, 90% of the

women surveyed said when pandemic restrictions were lifted, they engaged in normal activities, such as visiting family and friends, dining out and shopping. Only 48% of women visited their doctors’ offices. Hafertepen said besides the fear of COVID creating a hesitancy to get regular screenings, women traditionally tend to take care of everyone else and ignore their own needs. Hafertepen said it is not uncommon for a woman to ignore a strange lump or discharge, which are both breast cancer symptoms that should be checked out immediately. “When they finally come in about a mass or continued discharge, the results are worse,” she said. “If we had seen them six months ago when they first noticed the symptoms, the prognosis is much better.” Hafertepen said a lot of women do not realize that they do not even need a doctor’s referral to get a regular screening mammogram every year. The only time a referral is required is if there are symptoms present. “If you feel something or notice something, go get it checked out. Call your doctor immediately,” Hafertepen said. According to the American Cancer Society, women should start getting annual mammograms at age 40. Hafertepen said getting that first baseline reading at 40 is important for doctors to keep track of breast changes each year after. That first breast exam can cause a lot of stress and anxiety, Hafertepen said. “The anxiety is understandable, but you can truly get over that anxiety by just getting it done,” she said. “If you do not do it, that anxiety will stay there lingering in the back of your mind.” Women can call any of the variety of mammogram service providers along the metro area and make appointments. Centers such as Invision Sally Jobe even make getting a mammogram fit schedules for busy women. Appointments can be made on Saturdays and evenings.

COVID cases rise among Colorado school-age kids That’s despite an overall downward trend statewide

Cases of COVID-19 among children ages 6 to 11 are on the rise and remain the highest among any age group as the state’s overall case rate is decreasing, public health officials said Oct. 1. While coronavirus infections are gradually declining among most other age groups, Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state’s epidemiologist, said the state will continue to monitor the new trend among those school-age children who are still ineligible for vaccines. Kids under the age of 12 remain the only group still ineligible for vaccination because no vaccine has yet been approved for them. But attention on the group will intensify in the coming weeks, as the drug maker Pfizer goes through the final processes of getting its COVID-19 vaccine authorized kids ages 5 to 11. Pfizer last month released data showing that its vaccine — at a much lower dose — is safe and effective in children ages 5 to 11. The company has submitted that data to regulators at the federal Food and Drug Administration, which has scheduled public

birds, though the foundation hopes to work its way to 350 birds so each will have more space and receive even better care. The Elbert County News, during a journey through the grounds of The Gabriel Foundation, learned an abundance about the adoption process, lifestyle of the birds, employee experience, and goals for the future of The Gabriel Foundation. Adoption The first and most overwhelming observation was the sheer abundance of birds on the property. When asked why there are so many parrots in need of homes, aviary operations manager Jessica Boone explained that many parrots live extraordinarily long lives. “Some parrots can live well into their hundreds,” said Boone. “Many of the birds who come through the foundation have outlived their owners.” Boone also indicated that many of their birds come from unfortunate circumstances. “A lot of the birds come from hoarding situations, while many come from homes that cannot afford to take care of such a maintenance-heavy pet.” Roughly 75% of the birds are adopted out, with more than 100 birds having been rescued since the start of 2021. Since the inception of the foundation in 1995, thousands of birds have come through the doors of The Gabriel Foundation and have been adopted out to loving families. The adoption process if very extensive, ensuring that the longliving birds are sent home with the right family and will have optimal care. Staff members at The Gabriel Foundation work diligently to ensure that the birds they adopt out go to safe, loving homes. Before visiting the foundation for the first time, potential adopters must take online courses about parrots and parrot care. Potential adopters are also required to visit The Gabriel Foundation at least five times to participate in bird education. On their visits, potential adopters learn about diet, enrichment and enclosures. They will also do extensive touring to narrow down which bird is right for them and their family. Potential adopters are also required to provide photos of their at-home enclosures before they are able to take the birds home.

The birds are given regular baths and are fed a varied and nutrientrich diet comprising everything from leafy green breakfast salad to hearty nuts and grains. They also have an abundance of toys and items for chewing. Many locals and those within the parrot community donate cardboard boxes and old phone books and newspapers for chewing. The staff and volunteers also make many of the toys the parrots regularly play with.

Junior shortstop Kaylynn English is a leader on the girls softball team from Parker’s Legend High School. English was the spark plug for the Titans with three hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases as Legend downed nearby Chaparral, 3-0, on Oct. 4 to win the regular season Continental League softball championship. “She is a good kid,” said Legend coach Kristen Shirk. “She definitely sets the tone for our team. She knows that. That puts more pressure on her at times but she was pretty loose (against Chaparral) and set the tone. We do play to win banners for the school. That’s a goal.” English got three singles in four at-bats and her base running led to Legend’s first two runs, which staked them to the early lead which they held. She led off the game with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on another wild pitch. “Baserunning is my favorite part of the game,” said English. “I love catching people and when I’m on third I look for the pitch in the dirt or up high.” In the third inning, English led off again with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and stole home to score the second run when the catcher was not sharp throwing the ball back to the pitcher. “I saw she (catcher) didn’t look at me at all and kind of lobbed it (the ball) back to the pitcher._I looked at my coach and she nodded her head and I knew what that meant. “The next pitch she didn’t look at me and I just went.” Chap needed to defeat Legend to gain a share of the league title, but the Titans wound up the regular season with a 19-4 overall record and 9-1 in the league. The Wolverines finished at 17-6 overall with a 7-3 league mark. The title game matched two of the Continental League’s best pitchers in Legend junior Cameron Ponich and Chap senior left-hander Emma Crosby. Each pitcher allowed six hits and struck out 12 batters. Ponich lowered her earned run average to 1.57 with 157 strikeouts. English’s three hits raised her batting average to .536 and the fact that it came in a championship game against a team from a rival school was important. “I’ve faced her (Crosby) since I was 8,” recalled English. “She’s always been one of the top pitchers. I was nervous but I had confidence and trusted myself.” Chap stranded six of the eight runners it left on base in the final four innings. “We had the tying run on but we have a lot of young kids,” said Chap coach Alan DiGiosio. “Cam’s (Ponich) a pretty dominant pitcher so we were in it in the seventh so I’ll

She gave up six hits and three in that leadoff spot and nothing more than singles. We were 3-13 last year and nobody picked us to do anything this year so to be 17-6 is pretty remarkable.” Both Legend and Chap are expected to host two of the eight regional state qualifying tournaments to be held Oct. 16. The final stretch of the walk from Denver Union Station to the Buell Public Media Center on 21st and Arapahoe has become a lot shadier ... in a good way. More than 30 Shumard oak trees line the sidewalk on 21st Street from Lawrence to Larimer. And although they are currently in above-ground tree boxes (i.e., not there permanently ... yet), they are a small part of what city leaders believe will be an enduring, “transformational” addition to Denver: The 5280 Trail. A project of the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP), the 5280 Trail is a 5.280-mile trail that, once complete, will encircle downtown Denver, connecting neighborhoods and landmarks. When the design process for the trail began in 2019, it drew comparisons to New York City’s High Line. In an interview with Rocky Mountain PBS, officials with the DDP said the project that most inspired them was the Cultural Trail in Indianapolis. The 5280 Trail is designed to connect high-traffic neighborhoods like La Alma/Lincoln Park, Capitol Hill and LoDo, to name a few, while also making stops at popular destinations like Union Station, Coors Field and the Colorado state Capitol. “We’re in desperate need of open space and park space in our city and near our neighborhoods, and this is really meant to provide that space,” said Andrew Iltis, the director of economic development at DDP. “We began to look around the country to see some really great ex-

amples of how these types of trails were being integrated into urban environments,” said Tami Door, DDP’s president and CEO (Door is leaving her post in November). Door cited four goals that implementing the 5280 Trail would meet: “Creating a mosaic of districts, increasing bike mobility, connecting neighborhoods, (and) creating an outdoor downtown.” “This is a very big vision,” Door added. “This is the type of infrastructure project that will transform our city and the way our neighborhoods and people connect with each other.” In terms of the size of the project and how it would change the city’s urban landscape, the 5280 Trail, Door said, is “on par” with the 16th Street Mall. Projects of this size come with a big price tag and a long timeline. Though the tree boxes on 21st are emblazoned with “Coming Soon!,” Door told Rocky Mountain PBS the goal is to have the trail totally completed in 10 years, adding that certain sections, including the one on 21st Street, will be entirely built out before then. As for funding, DDP officials said the 5280 Trail will come to fruition through a combination of public and private dollars. Door said that “hundreds of thousands of dollars” from the private sector have already been put forward for early planning and exploratory trips to other cities like Indianapolis. When it comes to public funds, the DDP is banking on $7 million earmarked for the 5280 Trail in the City of Denver’s $450 million General Obligation bond package.

The package, which also includes about $37 million for purchasing and improving homeless shelters, as well as plans for a new arena at the National Western Center, goes before Denver voters in November. The 5280 Trail funding is included in Denver’s Question 2C: “Constructing a segment of an urban trail and pedestrian walkway in downtown Denver”. If passed, that $7 million will go toward building out the 5280 Trail on Acoma Street from 10th Avenue to 12th Avenue. The city has already committed $850,000 to the planning (but not the construction) of the 21st Street segment — which will extend from Benedict Fountain Park to Coors Field — and that will be the first part of the trail to be developed. “Here’s the power of that: Once the public starts to see what something really looks like, the private dollars start to come faster and faster,” Door said. “Especially people who have investments in different neighborhoods and they’re excited to bring the trail to their neighborhood.” Presently, no money has been identified for the actual construction of the 21st Street segment. Denver City Councilman Chris Hinds, who represents District 10, said the segment on 21st is estimated to cost $30 million to complete. If the voters approve the Acoma Street segment’s funding as part of the GO bond package, “the segment will be 100% realized,” Hinds told Rocky Mountain PBS. Door said she isn’t worried about funding. “We have 100% no concerns that we will get the money,” she said. “This vision is very powerful. It’s transformational. It supports so many varied aspects of our community: visitors, employees, residents.” People who live and work on this particular section of 21st are used to these types of transformations: For two months in the summer of 2017, 21st between Larimer and Lawrence closed to traffic and became “The Square on 21st,” another one of DDP’s projects. The Square on 21st was designed to show the potential of the 5280 Trail. Since then, the same section of 21st was closed to traffic in order to create a pop-up park during the MLB All-Star Game in 2021, and it also hosted this year’s Oktoberfest. What the 21st Street section of the 5280 Trail will look like is still to be determined. There are currently two options for the trail’s 21st Street segment. The first option is a “trail” design, which would close the street to motorists (excluding emergency vehicles) and create a shared trail for cyclists and pedestrians. The second option is called a “shared street” in which cars would be allowed. Brett Boncore is a senior engineer with the city’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and the project manager of the 5280 Trail on 21st Street. He told Rocky

Mountain PBS that reintroducing a tree canopy to downtown Denver will be a “huge piece” of the 5280 Trail. And, Boncore added, the 21st Street segment of the 5280 Trail will help inform the design of the remaining parts of the trail. “Whatever is designed on 21st, we can learn from and apply to the rest of the 5280 Trail,” Boncore said. But that doesn’t mean the design for the 21st Street section of the trail will extend for all 5.28 miles. Some sections could have the shared street design, while others could have carfree trails, Boncore explained. “It won’t look the same along the entire route,” added Iltis. “It will definitely relate to the place and that’s really important. That’s important to make it interesting as you move around the trail, but it’s also important to make sure that the community feels that value.” In La Alma Lincoln Park, for example, the hope is to commission new artwork that fits in with the culture and history of the neighborhood. “Every place should feel special and have its own distinct identity,” Door said, “but yet still be threaded together with a commonality of what it means to be Denver.” This story is from Rocky Mountain PBS, a nonprofit public broadcaster providing community stories across Colorado over the air and online. Arapahoe boys take state golf title Warriors last achieved pinnacle 33 years ago BY JIM BENTON JBENTON@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Arapahoe High School in Centennial has come close many times to winning a state golf championship. The Warriors were second the past two seasons and third in the previous two campaigns. Arapahoe’s golfers dominated for most of the regular season, and on Oct. 5 at the Colorado Springs County Club the team wrapped up its first state golf title since 1988. The Warriors held a one-shot lead after the first day of competition but came in with a 216 during the final round to finish with 438 strokes to outdistance Greenwood Village’s Cherry Creek High School by 17 strokes. Creek finished second at 455. Highlands Ranch was third at 458. “It feels really special,” said Arapahoe coach Harry Buckner. “This is a special group of kids. They challenged each other all year in all of our practices and competition. “Thirty-three years ago is the

last time we won a state championship. That’s a long time ago. We’ve been knocking on the door but it’s so hard to open because there are so many good teams.” Arapahoe senior Will Kates didn’t have to wait 33 years to win his second state individual title championship. Kates, who captured the state championship in 2019, shot a final round of 1-underpar 70 and tied first-day leader Wesley Erling of Pine Creek for first place with 142 two-round totals. Kates won a playoff on the second playoff hole with a seven-foot birdie putt to earn his second state championship. “I kinda made some really good putts today and that kinda of kept me in early,” said Kates. “I built off that and kept going from there.” And he made the biggest putt on the second extra hole of the playoff, which was the 524-yard, par 5 first hole. “I had that exact same putt on the first this morning, so I hit it on my line and it went in,” Kates continued. “It’s pretty cool to win. If you told me my freshman year that I would win two state championships I wouldn’t have believed you. “Winning state is just as cool as the individual, to be honest with you. My base goal this year was to

get the team title.” Kates was the leader but Max Zadvorny had a 1-over-par 72 and wound up in eighth place with a total of 149. Matthew Wilkinson and Grant Juergens each had final rounds of 74. Wilkinson came in tied for sixth at 147 and Juergens was ninth at 150. Luke Cushman of Castle View High School in Castle Rock had a final-round 72 and came in tied for third place at 147, and Ryan Peragallo of Highlands Ranch tied with Juergens for ninth place. Cherry Creek’s Jonathan Trigg had a 151 total to lead the Bruins’ charge into second place. Despite the large margin of victory, Buckner admitted to being concerned heading into the final round of the two-day tournament. “Yeah, I was concerned,” he said. “We had a one-stroke lead after the first day. We were scared. You never know what is going to happen. I thought we would play good, we always play better the second day than we do the first day. All four guys played really well.” In the Class 3A state tournament that was held at Spring Valley Golf Club in Elizabeth, Lutheran’s Aj Papajohn finished tied for sixth in the individual standings after turning in rounds of 75 and 73 for a 148 total.
