The Idaho Springs Planning Commission discussed changing ordinances handling parking requirements in the town on July 6. There is a required amount of parking spaces for properties based on their use — such as office, restaurant or retail — and their floor area. Property owners cannot change the use of their space unless that change would require less than 125% of their parking lot requirements. Assistant City Manager Jonathan Cain asked the Planning Commission’s direction on possibly changing these ordinances for the Historic Downtown if a possible parking structure is constructed. As an example of the current parking requirements, if a 2,000 square foot property is an office, it is required to have five parking spaces. But, if it wishes to change use to a restaurant, it would be required to have eight, which is more than 125% of the five original parking spaces — at 6.25 — therefore the property cannot change use. “I’m also aware that there are some second floors of buildings that are currently unutilized or underutilized that may also go toward the housing component potentially,” Cain said. “This parking require-

The Wild Bunch, a historical reenactment group that performs mock shootouts with blank ammo rounds, was a topic of public comment at the July 11 Idaho Springs City Council meeting.

Business owners and citizens raised concern of the mock gunfire triggering panic in people who were unaware of the show happening on Miner Street in Downtown Idaho Springs and hearing the shots out of context. Multiple speakers said they enjoyed historical reenactments, and appreciated the entertainment the group brought to the town, but saw the mock gunfire to be problematic. “It’s an unfortunate reality that we have daily mass shootings in this country, and other violence in this very town, and I question the
