When Haleigh Washington steps onto Tokyo’s volleyball court and serves, blocks and spikes under the Olympic lights, it will be the highlight of a journey that started in a Clear Creek gymnasium. Washington, who grew up in Idaho Springs and played sports at Clear Creek Middle School/High School, is scheduled to start on the U.S. women’s volleyball team in this summer’s Olympic Games. As she seeks her first Olympic gold medal, Washington said the Clear Creek community not only helped jumpstart her volleyball career, but gave her a sense of what it meant to be passionate about something. “When you find a passion, people support you and want you to pursue it,” she said of growing up in Idaho Springs. “ … There was a level of pride in pursuing something in that town.” Washington thanked everyone in Clear Creek who supported her, especially CCMS/HS staff, and hoped her journey would show local children that they too can go to the Olympics one day. An Idaho Springs police officer was arrested last week on suspicion of assault after a May 30 incident left a local 75-year-old man hospitalized. Nicholas Hanning, who has been on administrative leave from ISPD, turned himself in on July 7 after an arrest warrant was issued for third-degree Hanning assault of an atrisk adult, a class 6 felony, according to a press release from the Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office. No other charges have been filed at this time. Bond was set at $2,000 cash or surety, which Hanning met. Formal charges were expected by 4 p.m. July 12, and his next appearance was scheduled for July 13. ISPD was scheduled to decide this week whether to continue Hanning’s employment. He’s been with ISPD for three years, Chief Nate Buseck confirmed. Buseck said another officer, Ellie Summers, has been disciplined internally after an investigation SEE HANNING, P11
