County commissioners launch info sessions on water proposal Meetings to cover environmental, economic, other impacts of proposal to import from San Luis Valley BY ELLIOTT WENZLER EWENZLER@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

As the Douglas County commissioners consider whether or not to

spend $20 million of federal funds on a proposal to import water from the San Luis Valley, the county is conducting several public “due diligence” meetings to learn more

about the divisive project. In the first of these meetings, the Douglas County commissioners on Jan. 18 heard from a representative from Renewable Water Resources, or RWR, the Littleton-based company that submitted the proposal. According to their proposal, RWR would pull about 22,000 acre-feet of water per year from 22 to 25 wells in

the northern part of the San Luis Valley and would pump the water to the Front Range through a pipeline. The heavily agricultural San Luis Valley is in south central Colorado, stretching south from the small town of Villa Grove. “The ultimate goal is to provide a SEE WATER, P22

ICU nurse honored with Sky Ridge Healthcare Hero Award Council approves Lone Tree nurse Community credited for saving Protection Plan woman in Jan. 6 crash Castle Rock Fire to start implementation

Thanks to a Sky Ridge nurse’s quick thinking and the urge to do the right thing, a life was probably saved on a cold, icy highway in the early-morning hours of Jan. 6. Sky Ridge Medical Center ICU nurse Kristan Dye was driving on Gun Club Road in Aurora with her two children headed toward Children’s Hospital Colorado when she saw a vehicle, about three cars ahead of her, veer off the road. When the other two cars zoomed by the crashed vehicle, Dye said she realized there was a person inside and something told her to stop. She exited her vehicle, telling her 11- and 8-year-old children to stay in the car. Dye ran to the car and found an unresponsive female inside, while noting that smoke was starting to come from the engine. Dye grabbed her medical kit as two men who did not speak English also stopped to help. She said she was able to get them to call 9-1-1 while she assessed the injured woman. SEE HERO, P31

Capping off three years of planning, and reflecting an increased priority after the Marshall Fire in Boulder County, the Castle Rock Town Council approved the Community Protection Plan, or CPP. With a focus on protecting the community from the threat of wildland fires, Fire Chief Norris Croom explained the process to create the CPP during the Jan. 18 meeting. The CPP was developed after a three-year coordinated effort that involved a series of comprehensive, scientifically based analyses of wildfire-related hazards and risks in areas the Castle Rock Fire Department serves where wildland and urban areas meet. Croom said the Castle Rock Fire Department currently manages fire protection for all 32 square miles of incorporated Castle Rock, plus an addition 34 square miles of unincorporated Douglas County.
