As COVID cases rise, local hospital ICUs fill up ‘Vast majority’ of hospitalized virus patients are unvaccinated

As COVID-19 cases continue to go up across the metro area due to the highly-transmissible delta variant, hospitals are admitting more patients to ICU beds, and UCHealth and Kaiser Permanente are postponing non-urgent medical procedures.

According to the Tri-County Health Department, as of Sept. 1, hospitals in Douglas County had reached 95% capacity for ICU beds.

Inpatient beds were exceeding 85%.

In neighboring Arapahoe County, ICU beds were at 83.4% capacity to start the month of September.

Adams County increased to 91.3% capacity.

As hospitals are dealing with the increase in cases, UCHealth made the call last week to postpone nonurgent surgeries as the system faces the highest number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients since January, when cases neared 500.

At the start of September, UCHealth reported more than 260 hospitalizations due to confirmed or suspected COVID patients.

handling of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic. He frequently goes head-to-head with Tri-County Executive Director John Douglas in public meetings and has previously written the agency urging fewer COVID-19 precautions in schools, such as mask-wearing rules.

Bracken was named to step in for Zach Nannestad, whose resignation from the Tri-County Board of Health in late August marked the third time this year that Douglas County has lost one of its representatives on the board.

His appointment comes as Douglas County has been making moves to exit Tri-County and stand up its own public health agency amid opposition by the county’s elected leaders to some of Tri-County’s COVIDrelated mandates, most recently its ruling that people must wear a mask in school buildings.

Tri-County has provided public health services to Douglas County for 55 years and also served Arapahoe and Adams counties. Its ninemember board is made up of three representatives from each of the three counties, appointed by their commissioners.

Bracken was recently selected as chair of Douglas County’s public health advisory committee, which was established to help commissioners explore the future of public health services in the county.

forming their own health department. At press time, county commissioners were slated to take a vote on quitting the agency Sept. 7.

Unless and until the county appoints a new board of health, it would will still be under the purview of Tri-County Health, according to a county spokesperson.

Bracken’s appoinment came hours before an Aug. 30 Tri-County board meeting regarding masks.

At that meeting, Tri-County’s board approved an indoor maskwearing requirement for all students and teachers in school and

childcare settings.

Bracken and Dr. Linda Fielding, the only other Douglas County board of health representative present, both voted against the mask mandate, as did an Arapahoe County representative.

“This board is completely missing the mark on protecting the people that are vulnerable,” Bracken said in the meeting. “You are punishing the kids, the ones who can’t protect themselves, and I’m standing up for them right now.”

Also in that meeting, the board revoked a policy that allowed its three member counties to opt out of public health orders. That policy had been approved in November 2020 as part of a negotiation with the Douglas County commissioners, who had threatened to leave the health department. Following that agreement, the commissioners promised to stay with the agency until at least 2023.

It was a few days after the health board’s decision to end the opt-out policy that the Douglas County commissioners voted to begin forming their own department.

‘Driving their own agenda’ In resigning from the Tri-County Board of Health Aug. 26, Nannestad cited a conflict of interest due to his job with the Douglas County School District, which is enforcing TriCounty’s mask mandate.

Bracken works as a consultant helping hospitals find cost-saving measures, according to a resume he submitted for the county advisory committee.

In his application to join the committee, he wrote about frequent COVID-19 update meetings in which he “argued with the Tri-County Health Department based on the skewed data sets in and isolated information that was provided during these meetings.”

“Ultimately, Tri-County Health Department was not interested in adjusting their information, they were only interested in driving their own agenda,” he wrote.

In one council meeting, he said he believed Douglas, the head of TriCounty, had “dropped the ball.”

Before joining the public health advisory committee, Bracken joined other Douglas County elected of-

ficials in scrutinizing the Douglas County School District and public health officials for COVID-19 precautions. He has been a staunch supporter of leaving the wearing of masks in schools up to personal choice.

In an email that Bracken sent to Douglas County commissioners and school district leaders, which he provided to Colorado Community Media, he claimed that children were at lower risk for the virus and were less likely to spread COVID. “Without sounding callous, it is time for folks to exercise their own personal responsibility,” he wrote.

Bracken said he sent the email before a more transmissible strain first identified in the U.K. began widely circulating.

Still, students should not be required to mask if they would also be required to quarantine when exposed to COVID-19 regardless of whether they wore face coverings, he told Colorado Community Media.

Bracken argued Tri-County Health was not standing behind its own data showing children were at less risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and pressed Dr. John Douglas, the Tri-County director, to push back against Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment COVID-safety requirements.

In the pandemic’s early months, Bracken criticized orders closing struggling businesses to in-person service. In May 2020, Bracken said he would patronize businesses that opened in defiance of shutdowns, so long as they practiced social distancing. In December he attended anti-shutdown rallies in Castle Rock in support of local businesses.

Split commissioner vote A spokesperson said that the county commissioners chose Bracken as an interim member because they wanted to ensure they had three board of health representatives for the Aug. 30 meeting but wanted to fully consider the appointment later.

The Douglas County commissioners approved Bracken in a 2-1 vote, with Commissioner Lora Thomas voting against the motion.

“I really hoped we would put someone on that board who had a medical background, a health care background, a background in a service that Tri-County Health supplies to our citizens,” she said. “If we end up in a situation where the county needs to form its own board of health quickly, I want to be sure that we are really demonstrating to citizens that we are serious about having subject matter experts on that board of health.”

Commissioner George Teal defended the appointment, saying he felt Bracken was “an ideal choice” in part because of his work with hospital administrations.

“Of all the elected officials that we have seen following the Tri-County meetings ever since COVID became a crisis here in Colorado, he’s been the most active,” Teal said. “He’s definitely been the most involved and outspoken, he’s asked a lot of the hard questions of Dr. Douglas and the other senior staff of TriCounty.”

Teal also said he believes Bracken could add “a healthy dose of professionalism” to the board and that he hopes to see the appointment made permanent.

“Additionally, we will work with our families and staff members who cannot tolerate a mask due to medical or mental health reasons.

Our goal is to keep our students and staff in the classroom for inperson learning,” her statement said.

‘I don’t want to do it again’ At Legend, Linda Potter attended in support of her freshman son, Michael Davy. Wearing masks last school year affected his mental and physical health by causing headaches, she said. Potter has an obligation as a parent to help Michael speak up for personal freedoms, she said.

“They are very passionate speaking with their own voice and their own constitutional right,” she said of the students.

Potter said she would support her son if he wanted to wear a mask, but Michael said that’s not his stance. He does not believe masks are effective and said he noticed less social interaction between students after the mandate began that morning.

him, but his impression was some teachers were upset by his choice, saying he got “dirty looks.”

He hopes the mandate is repealed and said the latest health order angered him.

“Because we already went through this for one whole year and I don’t want to do it again,” he said.

Zackary Taylor, a 16-year-old junior at Legend, also called masks ineffective and that he does not believe COVID is serious. His family contracted the virus and got through OK, he said, including his grandmother with health chal-

lenges.

Taylor believes everyone will catch COVID-19 at some point and that masking should be a personal choice.

“I do get that there are people who need to wear masks because of family members,” he said.

‘It just stinks’ Protests took place at multiple schools in Douglas County on Sept.

1, including Ponderosa High School in Parker and Rock Canyon High School near Highlands Ranch.

teacher at Rock Canyon. In preparing the day before for expected student walkouts, McBride said he planned to support what he called students’ First Amendment right to protest but would remain in the classroom to also support students who wanted to work on that day’s lessons.

McBride estimated about 5% of people at Rock Canyon voluntarily masked before mandates went into effect this school year, echoing estimates district Superintendent Corey Wise shared for the whole district at an Aug. 24 board meeting.

“In our particular building, I think a lot of us did feel safe because our numbers weren’t going up, even when they we going up in the district. We weren’t seeing many positive cases in the building, so we felt kind of insulated,” McBride said.

He supports masking now to prevent Colorado from losing intensive-care unit capacity, like several other states are, and said he’s trusting Tri-County Health’s guidance when it comes to mandates.

The start to the school year has been tense, McBride said, and he worries about further spread of the delta variant along with continued disputes over COVID-19.

“I think already we are starting to feel tired and normally I don’t think that that’s something we experience in the third week of class,” he said. “It just stinks. I don’t know a better way to put it.”

Arapahoe, Adams look at whether to exit Tri-County Health

Following news that Douglas County could form its own health department soon, Arapahoe County confirmed that Arapahoe and Adams counties have also been contemplating splitting away from Tri-County Health Department in its current form.

By October, commissioners in both Arapahoe and Adams counties will be provided with findings from a transition team to inform a decision on a new structure for public health services, according to a statement from Arapahoe County.

Consultants are examining the scenarios of a two-county health agency or creating single-county health departments, said Luc

Hatlestad, spokesperson for Arapahoe County.

“We set this up in the spring (or) summer,” Hatlestad said, adding that the study was initiated once it became clear that Douglas wasn’t going to stick with Tri-County Health.

Douglas County’s consideration of leaving the agency — which at press time was to come up for action on Sept. 7 — came amid a rift with Tri-County Health over the agency’s pandemic safety policies and its decision not to let counties opt themselves out of its mandates.

Both Arapahoe and Adams County have been a part of TriCounty Health since the agency was founded in 1948.

Douglas County moves to split from Tri-County Health Action would end 55-year relationship with public-health agency

Douglas County commissioners unanimously voted Sept. 1 to begin the process of forming the county’s own health department —- the latest chapter in the county’s long-running dispute with the Tri-County Health Department over COVIDsafety rules.

The preliminary vote came just a few days after Tri-County Health’s board voted to no longer allow counties to opt out of public health orders and enacted a mask mandate for all students and staff in school settings. Douglas County previously had opted out of Tri-County’s school-mask mandate.

“I believe that we have been double-crossed,” Commissioner Lora Thomas said during the work session.

The Sept. 1 commissioner vote directed county staffers to send a letter to Tri-County informing the health department of their pending departure.

Commissioners earlier issued a statement that they would create “a public health agency framework that will honor the needs of Douglas County citizens.”

after commissioners approve the Tri-County pullout, and that board would then select an executive director for the county’s public health department, according to the county attorney.

Until a new county board is appointed, the county would still be under the purview of Tri-County, according to a county spokesperson.

Normally, counties are required to give the health department one year’s notice before they leave. But during the Douglas County com-

missioners’ Sept. 1 work session, County Attorney Lance Ingalls said that he believes there is a strong legal argument for why that’s not needed this time.

Ingalls said that because Tri-County had recently voted to rescind the opt-out option — a negotiated agreement between the two entities — the county’s earlier notification of plans to withdraw from Tri-County over COVID-policy differences, in July 2020, was still intact.

The county has already paid for services from Tri-County for the rest of the year and plans to continue receiving those services, just with a Douglas County-specific board of health in charge of governance, Commissioner Lora Thomas said during the Sept. 1 session.

hospitals in Highlands Ranch, Aurora and Broomfield.

A statement provided by media relations manager Paula Freund said, “Highlands Ranch Hospital and other UCHealth hospitals are experiencing very high census rates and caring for near-record numbers of patients. We are closely monitoring the capacity of our hospitals.

“To ensure we have available beds and the capabilities to care for any patients who may have an urgent or emergent health care need, we have been proactively postponing a small number of non-urgent and non-emergent surgeries and procedures that would have led to an admission to one of our hospitals, including Highlands Ranch Hospital,” Freund said. “This is helping to open up beds as needed for patients with more urgent health care conditions.”

Kaiser Permanente also opted to postpone elective and non-urgent procedures in all Colorado locations.

According to the Colorado COVID information webpage, Kaiser Permanente said the decision is based on guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control.

Centura Health has several hospitals in the region, including Castle Rock Adventist Hospital and Parker Adventist Hospital in Douglas County.

tals, like other hospital systems in Colorado and elsewhere, have seen an increase in COVID-19 patients over the summer as the delta variant has spread in our communities.

However, the number of patients with COVID-19 is still far lower than we saw in the winter. Although our hospitals are busy, all of our facilities have the capacity to care for everyone in our communities who need us.”

Like other health officials in the region, Massey said unvaccinated cases are causing more concern.

“The vast majority of our COVID-19 inpatients are unvaccinated.

We continue to encourage all in

our communities to get vaccinated against COVID-19,” he said. “The vaccines are safe and effective and are the best way to avoid becoming infected with COVID-19 and spreading it to others.”

In late August, Dr. Ben Usatch, emergency medicine physician and medical director of the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital Emergency Department, said the Douglas County hospital is gaining more patients every day and the difference between an unvaccinated and vaccinated case is dramatic.

Usatch said unvaccinated patients are requiring more care, ventilators and are in more serious condition.

In cases where a vaccinated patient gets a breakthrough case of COVID, Usatch said, the symptoms are routinely mild and need little care.

Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, operated by the HealthOne hospital system, has also seen an increase in COVID patients due to the delta variant.

In a Sept. 2 statement, Linda Watson, the hospital vice president of marketing and public affairs, said, “Like other hospitals, Sky Ridge Medical Center has seen a marked increase in COVID-19 patients in the past few weeks. This increase includes patients on our medical floor as well as those requiring ICU care. Our COVID-19 patient admissions have tripled in the past 30 days. About a third of COVID patients admitted currently require ICU care, and approximately half of those COVID-19 patients in the ICU require ventilation.”

Watson said Sky Ridge is there for the entire community and has the capacity to continue treating patients.

“On a regular basis, there is a frequent flow of patients admitted and discharged,” she said. “We continually monitor our census and assess resources and support to help meet the needs of our community including those non-COVID-19 patients who require our care.”

Like other medical professionals, Sky Ridge Chief Medical Officer Eric Lung said in late August that vaccinations are going to be the key to decreasing the severity of COVID cases and stopping the spreading pandemic.

For Lebsack, he chose the slower obstacle, reaching the final rope ladder with ease. Lebsack showed no weakness in the course, managing the spider wall, tires and challenges without hesitation or fatigue.

In zooming through the Stage One course, Lebsack finished in 2:13.95, clocking the second-best time of the night.

Lebsack is one of 18 teenagers allowed to compete on the show this year. In the past, teenagers were not allowed to compete on the main stage. Lebsack, 15, has proven that youth and inexperience are secondary to hard work. Lebsack is one of three teenagers to move on to Stage Two, which will air on NBC on Sept.

Last year, Lebsack advanced to the semifinals of the “American Ninja Warrior” junior competition.

The elegant solution: thinking before speaking

T

here is a time and place for pithy remarks, sarcasm, and even bad jokes. OK, well maybe there is never a good time for bad jokes, but pithy remarks and sarcasm, absolutely.

The world has been dealing us some very serious situations. There are many among us who deal with serious situations through humor.

Whether we are trying to mask our own fears or concerns, and/or we are trying to lighten a mood for others around us, the smart play is to read the room first. Many a poorly timed great joke or spontaneous one-liner has been met with incredulity and awkward silence.

Many of us have found ourselves apologizing once we realized the impact that our comment or joke had on those around us. Having been that person who carelessly and thoughtlessly made a bad choice of words, and did so more than once, I know firsthand what it feels like to wish I could immediately take back what I had said.

Now I am not referring to political correctness where some of us get easily offended by the slightest offhanded remark or jab. I will reserve

that for another column. What I am referring to here is having situational awareness and sensitivity to what is going on around us at any given moment.

In our haste we may think that is inMichael Norton something credibly funny, or harmless when it first pops into our head, not pausing to try and appreciate how it will be received by others. Even when we have the very best of intentions, poor timing coupled with even worse content could end up as a complete misfire.

You may feel like this is common sense. Maybe it is, let’s also remember that common sense isn’t always common practice. Again, learning this the hard way, I have taught myself to apply the 30-second rule.

Instead of focusing on being quick with a joke or punch line, I hesitate to make sure that what I am about to say wouldn’t be insulting or hurtful to those around me.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR When will we return to learning?

Local school district news has been filled lately with parent protests about the heated battle between school mask mandates vs. parental choice for masking. Prior to that, the focus was on whether or not Douglas County School District’s “equity policy” was in fact critical race theory in a thin candy coating.

Most of last semester’s school leadership conversations revolved around “mitigation protocols,” etc. I challenge you to have a frank conversation with any dedicated teacher in our county, and it seems all they really want to do is get back to teaching kids.

Far too much time has been focused on top-down administrative policies, fixated on factors that have zero to do with actual education. Meanwhile, our students are the ones suffering most.

Remote learning worked for some kids, but was a nightmare for others, and the same is true for teachers. But one thing that’s clear is that amassing knowledge has taken a backseat to non-education related policies and distractions.

By the way, there is a difference between being offended and being insulted or hurt. If we were to worry about offending others each time we spoke, well we just might not speak at all anymore. We could all use a little adjustment to our offended meter, recognizing that all our differences and differences of opinion are what keep things fun and interesting. Just imagine if we all thought the same, looked the same, acted the same in every situation, how boring would that be?

Insulting or hurting others through our words is something completely different. It’s one thing if our poorly timed attempt at humor, lightening the mood, or trying to comfort someone else is done with the very best of intentions and falls flat. When that is the case, we can fix it by practicing the 30-second rule, pausing before we speak. However, when we know that what we are about to say could potentially be a mic drop moment for all the wrong reasons, that is when it becomes a problem.

A Colorado mom-and-pop business inches closer to red ink

T

he new priorities of the United States Postal Service will be the end of our mom-and-pop business.

Last summer, packages that our business shipped via USPS began to go missing or took months to reach their destination. Over the last year, we have spent a massive amount of time and expense tracking down packages, sending out replacements, filing claims forms online or by phone, and communicating with frustrated customers.

Boxes being shipped internationally are even worse, as they sometimes disappear into limbo for up to half a year, assuming they turn up at all.

My parents own and operate a small business called Sopris Unlimited. Calling it a small business is a misnomer; it is literally a mom-and-pop operation. In 1982, my dad designed one of the first frame pack saddles for llamas and, three years later, he and my mom

launched the family business.

Our line of llama pack equipment is used by customers throughout the United States and across the world, from Norway to Australia, from Israel to ArgenAlexa Metrick tina. Although we started the business in Carbondale, we are now based in the little mountain town of La Veta.

We are not, nor have we ever been, a brick-and-mortar store; we started out with mail-order print catalogs, covers emblazoned with candid photos of my brother and me out on the trail with llamas. We now receive the majority of our orders through our website. But if you call our 800 number, my dad answers the phone, answers your questions, and takes down your

order the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper.

As you might imagine, the customer base for llama pack saddles is not large, and we are one of only a half-dozen sources for this type of equipment. Eleven years ago, we expanded our line to include gear for all of the smaller pack animals (including alpacas, goats, sheep, reindeer, yaks, and donkeys), but that still puts our annual receipts at $41,450,000 less than that of the average firm in our mail-order industry as designated by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

And although the SBA doesn’t have a standard number of employees listed for the industry, I’d imagine we’re on the low end; over the decades, various members of one Old Order Amish family in Iowa have manufactured our product line by hand.

This business has been a daily presence in my parents’ lives for nearly 40 years. So it seems just a bit ironic that, of all the volatile market forces that have threatened it over those decades, our demise might come about because of poor management of the government agency that has consistently been ranked as America’s favorite by Gallup.

The USPS is a vital service to rural America. Unlike our national postal service, private corporations such as United Parcel Service and FedEx are not federally mandated to deliver all mail to every address, no matter how remote, nor to do so for the same price as a delivery to an address in an urban distribution hub.

The accessibility and affordability of the USPS is especially rrelevant to our business, as our employees and our customers are overwhelmingly rural.

The future of the United States Postal Service has been under threats of privatization before Louis DeJoy was appointed Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer, but the last year with him at the helm might be what finally does our family business in.

Longer delivery times, higher prices, reduced hours, and closed stations are bad enough, but the number of packages we’ve had go missing over the last year has

been devastating to our bottom line.

DeJoy intends to make package delivery the main product of the USPS over the next 10 years, and yet it is that very service that has failed our business, over and over again, during the last year and a half. We are inching nearer and nearer to the red because of mistakes made by the USPS; mistakes that rarely, if ever happened before 2020.

When DeJoy’s new 10-year-plan, with its focus on cost-cutting at the expense of delivery performance, forces my parents to close down their business, I’m sure Wall Street won’t notice. No economic indicators will be affected and there won’t be a flood of unemployed workers looking for new jobs.

But anyone who ships their products directly to their customers, from artists to inventors to llama pack saddle manufacturers, are being adversely affected. It will be that much harder for those of us who exist in niches to make a living at them.

A firefighter’s mission to remember 9/11 comrades

Denver 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb pays tribute, raises funds

n Saturday, Sept. 11, Americans will pay tribute to those lost in the worst terrorist attack in the country’s history as they reflect on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Like country star Alan Jackson’s song, “Where Were you When the World Stopped Turning,” many Americans to this day can remember exactly what they were doing when they heard the news that the World Trade Center had been hit by an airliner hijacked by terrorists.

Americans still remember the fear, anger and sadness.

In Castle Rock, local firefighter Oren Bersagel-Briese said he had the day off and his pager sounded.

He ignored it, and a few minutes later, his pager, home phone and cell phone began going off. All firefighters were called in to Castle Rock Fire to be on hand.

At the time, Bersagel-Briese said his father, who worked with the International Organization of Firefighters, was visiting. Doing what they could, Bersagel-Briese said all the firefighters came together to help his dad organize how to handle the tragedy on a national level.

Bersagel-Briese, a fourth-generation firefighter, said after 9/11, he always felt a sense of duty to pay tribute and support for the firefighters and police officers lost that day.

In 2004, his efforts started on a small level with a handful of firefighters from Denver and Castle Rock getting together to stay fit and talk while climbing stairs.

As the tradition continued each month, in 2005 one of the firefighters brought up the idea of climbing specifically on Sept. 11. That year, five firefighters climbed 110 flights of stairs, representing the 110-story

Besides a remembrance for lost comrades, Bersagel-Briese said, the annual event provides an opportunity to run a fitness exercise, raising the level of awareness for one of the highest firefighter priorities — physical fitness. More than half of the line-of-duty deaths among firefighters are heart-related incidents, he said.

Bersagel-Briese said in 2006, the group had 12 firefighters show up for what came to be known as the Denver 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

That year, Bersagel-Briese said, the participants realized they were on to something that could become a bigger event.

In 2007, the Denver 9/11 Memorial Climb grew to 250 participants from all over the U.S. In 2008, the number or participants was capped

Each year, every firefighter scaling the stairs at a high-rise building in downtown Denver is given a tag with the name and information of a fallen firefighter from 9/11.

“We encourage the firefighters to then call the family of the firefighter they are running for,” BersagelBriese said. “They call and let them know they have not been forgotten.”

Now, in its 16th year, the annual stair climb has gained national attention as departments all over the U.S. have started hosting similar events. In a normal year, BersagelBriese said, there are more than 16,000 firefighters paying tribute to lost comrades on 9/11.

Bersagel-Briese said the Denver 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is only for firefighters. For the general

After the memorial was completed, Bersagel-Briese, a Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department division chief at the training center, said, having a piece of Ground Zero in Castle Rock is an honor.

Bersagel-Briese said he chose the training center for the new memorial because it is a place

public to pay tribute, a public stair climb event is hosted at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre each year.

The Red Rocks Stair Climb, 911stairclimb.com, is limited to 1,200 participants this year.

From the start, Bersagel-Briese said, the annual climb has always been about paying respects to the fallen comrades of 9/11. It was not about money, he said.

However, as the event grew bigger and gained more national attention, the annual event started generating funds. Proceeds go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which provides funding to help firefighters who survived 9/11 but are now being diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses directly related to the attacks.

Over the years, Bersagel-Briese said, more than $7 million has been contributed to helping New York firefighters and their families.

Hoelting said the public is also welcome to attend an in-person remembrance ceremony in conjunction with the Veterans Memorial Run. The ceremony will begin as soon as all of the runners have completed the run, which is slated to be between 2 and 3 p.m. This ceremony will be held at Station 152, 485 Crystal Valley Parkway.

Brewster Comics now open in Castle Rock New venture encourages reading for all

After using the love of comics to help his son learn to read, Castle Rock resident Bruce Singh decided to open a small shop downtown to sell a variety of popular favorites and collectibles.

Singh, originally from New York, moved to Castle Rock two years ago.

While his professional career is in fiber optics, Singh said he is opening the Brewster Comics store as a side operation.

“Our whole goal in doing this is to encourage reading through these recognizable characters we all love in comics,” Singh said. “For us, it is really a family thing. The main reason we love comics is because they

were a big help in my son learning to read.”

Singh’s son Jakob was diagnosed with ADHD and struggled in learning to read for years. Singh said it was a “huge help” when the family discovered the Dog Man comic series.

Singh said Jakob is now 11 and will be helping him with the Brewster Comics store in Castle Rock.

Personally, Singh said, he has loved reading comic books since he was a child, always being a collector.

Brewster Comics has a supply of more than 1,500 comics, artwork,

and merchandise, including a variety from DC and Marvel.

Brewster’s Comics officially opened on Sept. 1 and will be open daily between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Singh opened Brewster Comics in a small space at 200 Perry St. The side venture is possible thanks to the opportunity offered by the Emporium in Castle Rock, Singh said.

When he was researching where to put a small store, Singh said he quickly learned that rent for regular-size store spaces is very expensive. That led him to learn more about the Emporium.

Located in downtown Castle Rock, the Emporium supports about 60 small businesses, serving as a location for local entrepreneurs to sell products ranging from children’s clothing and jewelry to the comics.

‘ROUK?’ senior program open house slated for Sept. 28 STAFF REPORT

The Castle Rock Police Department has a program specifically dedicated to the seniors in the Castle Rock community. It’s called “RUOK?” and the goal is to regularly

connect with Castle Rock’s most vulnerable populations who are living alone: senior citizens over the age of 65, and adults with disabilities.

Each week, a volunteer with the police department will call their senior to check in and send officers if

they need assistance. Not only does this program help these residents feel connected to the community, the RUOK? program also promotes socialization and the utilization of town resources.

Anyone interested in volunteer-

ing, or seniors needing to sign up, can participate in an upcoming open house. The open house will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Town’s Public Safety Training Facility, located at 1335 Park St.

Tri-County Health has been working with Adams and Arapahoe counties over the past several months to develop a transition plan, a statement from Hatlestad said. Since the process began, Adams and Arapahoe started to include the possibility of single-county public health agencies in the process.

The process is planned to have two phases: Phase I will collect data to inform the counties in deciding what structure will provide public health services starting in 2023, according to the statement.

Phase II will create a transition plan to begin implementing in 2022.

That step will begin with a series of focus groups, “key informant” interviews and “partner surveys,” the statement said.

The transition team will compile organizational and financial data and information and will create some scenarios for decision-makers to consider. By October, county commissioners will be provided with the findings to inform a decision.

After that organizational structure decision is made, the transition plan will be created.

Leaders from Tri-County Health, Adams and Arapahoe counties hired external experts to help further assess and analyze data.

Otowi Group is a Colorado-based, women-owned consulting firm with expertise in public health, public administration, health systems funding and operations, the statement said. Along with Otowi, experts from the University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs, ChangeMatrix, Maxfield and Gunning, and WEPublicHealth will help inform the decision making, the statement said.

policies, and have discussed setting up the county’s own agency.

In July 2020, Douglas County commissioners announced they would eventually leave Tri-County, citing a wish for more local control over public health orders.

But last November, the commissioners walked the decision back and agreed to stay with the health department until at least 2023. As part of that agreement, however, the commissioners were assured they would be able to opt out of any public health order.

After Tri-County enacted a mask

mandate for students ages 2 to 11 and any staff that work with them last week, Douglas and Adams counties’ commissioners both voted to opt out of the order. Arapahoe County commissioners were also planning to discuss a possible optout, but then the health board voted Aug. 30 to no longer allow opt outs.

That motion to end opt-outs was approved with a 5-3 vote, with the two present Douglas County board of health representatives and an Arapahoe County representative voting no. After rescinding the opt-out option, the health board approved a mask mandate for anyone over the age of 2 in schools and childcare settings.

Immediately following the decision from Tri-County, the Douglas

County board of commissioners released a statement saying they planned to continue their work in identifying “a public health agency framework that will honor the needs of Douglas County citizens,” according to the statement emailed through a spokesperson.

After Tri-County Health’s Aug. 30 vote, Douglas County commissioners declared that “the Tri-County Health Department board’s decision to rescind the opt-out provision from their policy during their meeting this afternoon unilaterally reversed our negotiated Nov. 10, 2020 agreement” under which the county agreed to stay with the agency.

In a statement responding to the county’s stance, a Tri-County spokesperson said the agency would

help in the transition to a new Douglas County health department.

“We are saddened to hear of Douglas County’s desire to leave Tri-County Health Department after a long and rich history of providing quality public health services to the residents of Douglas County,” according to the statement. “We are committed to keeping Douglas County safe and healthy and will continue to provide these services as long as necessary to make the transition as smooth as possible for the county’s residents and our staff.”

Valor girls start volleyball season 2-0 Win over Castle View is Eagles’ second in a row

It was only the second volleyball match of the season for both teams, but Valor Christian High School looked sharper than Castle View in a 3-0 victory on Aug. 31.

Valor gained momentum with point runs in each set and rolled to 25-21, 25-13 and 25-14 set victories over the Castle Rock school’s team in the match played at the Valor Christian gym in Highlands Ranch.

“I really appreciated the fact that everybody contributed and they contributed in a way that helped their teammates,” said Valor Christian coach Jayne McHugh.

Valor, ranked sixth in the CHSAANow.com Class 5A rankings on Aug. 30, improved to 2-0. The Eagles opened the season with a 3-2 win over No. 7 Legend of Parker and had a Sept. 2 match against third-ranked Cherry Creek of Greenwood Village.

Castle View, the Castle Rock school that launched the season with a win over Palmer of Colorado Springs, was ranked 10th in the Aug. 30 state rankings.

One question was answered in ThunderRidge High School’s 5-2 girls softball victory over Mountain Vista High in an Aug. 30 game played in downtown Denver at Metropolitan State University.

The teams from Highlands Ranch each entered the game with a 3-0 record, but Mountain Vista has a resume of general athletic success.

ThunderRidge has been a state contender in football and basketball but not so much in softball, where there had been just four winning records in the past 11 seasons.

So is this year’s team for real?

That’s the question the win over crosstown rival Mountain Vista helped answer.

“Every single game, these girls keep proving to themselves that they can be good,” said ThunderRidge coach Kevin McAllister.

“They battle, they fight, they never quit.

“This was a big game for them and for all of our alumni. They don’t get to beat Vista very often. They are our next-door neighbors and we love playing them but we like beating them more. This win definitely proves we have a bunch of girls that play gritty. They never quit.”

ThunderRidge was ranked eighth in the Aug. 30 CHSAANow.com Class 5A state rankings heading into the Continental League opener for both schools.

“This team is for real,” said senior pitcher Kaitlin Oberle. “We have a group of girls that we have never had before.”

Junior Avelyn Edwards agreed.

Vanguard Skin Specialists opens Castle Rock clinic Parker office to open in October with Dr. Adam Vaudreuil taking the lead

Dr. Adam Vaudreuil is happy to be back in his home state of Colorado as he takes the lead at a new dermatology and plastic surgery clinic in Castle Rock, and eventually in Parker.

Vaudreuil, who recently finished his residency in Chicago, was recruited by the Vanguard Skin Specialists to be the primary doctor in two new clinics as the franchise works to move into the Denver metro area.

With the Castle Rock clinic officially opening in August, Leisle Chung, CEO of Vanguard, said Vaudreuil will also lead the new office set to open in Parker in October.

Chung said Vanguard is working to open offices in underserved or growing communities. With Castle Rock being one of the fastest-grow-

ing communities in the state, Chung said it is a perfect destination for a combined dermatology and plastic surgery clinic. Parker has similar characteristics, she said.

Chung said Vanguard is unique because they have professionals onsite to take care of a variety of skin conditions without referring to other offices.

Vanguard clinics specialize in performing Mohs surgery, which is a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer, Chung said.

During Mohs surgery, thin layers of skin with cancer present are removed and examined until the cells are completely cancer free.

The procedure removes the cancerous skin without damaging nearby healthy tissue.

The Castle Rock clinic, located at 1175 S. Perry St., will be temporary.

Chung said the office will be relocated to a larger building at a later date.

Chung said the Castle Rock office is the seventh for Vanguard in Colorado. Vanguard clinics are also located throughout Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Woodland Park and Canon City.

Dr. Adam Vaudreuil will lead the new Vanguard Skin Specialists location in Castle Rock. He will also lead the new Parker clinic slated to open in October.

For Vaudreuil, the Vanguard opportunity came at the perfect time as he was finishing his residency in Chicago. Vaudreuil, who will be living in Castle Pines, grew up in Colorado Springs and his mom is a Colorado native.

Vaudreuil said when he first went away to medical school, he was not planning to specialize in dermatology. The young doctor said he originally planned a career in sports medicine and orthopedics. As he continued school and learning,

Vaudreuil said he quickly learned that being in an operating room was not where he wanted to be.

“I had no idea starting out that dermatology is where I would want to be in medicine,” he said. “But I like the patient interaction. I like the idea of also being able to work with my hands. I enjoy working with the people from a 6-year-old with warts to the older patients I get to see.”

Coming back to Colorado, Vaudreuil said he is excited to take on the challenge of taking care of patients in Castle Rock and Parker.

Vaudreuil will split his time between Castle Rock and Parker.

Joining Vaudreuil in the two clinics will be Dr. Renata Prado, who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various skin cancers, and Rachel Frederickson, a physician assistant, who specializes in medical dermatology for all ages.

Besides skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, Chung said the VanGuard group also specializes in other skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, eczema, and allergy testing for contact dermatitis and rashes.

Teams of 15 took turns pulling a 65,000-pound Gulfstream jet down the tarmac at Jefferson County’s Rocky Mountain Metro Airport on Aug. 28 as part of Special Olympics Colorado’s annual plane pull fundraiser.

More than 1,000 participants tried their hand at pulling the jet, vying for trophies in categories such as fastest time, most money raised and best team costume.

Teams were asked to fundraise

a minimum of $1,000 for Special Olympics Colorado, an organization that serves nearly 18,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state. The event also featured food, a beer garden, vendors and giveaways.

Special Olympics Colorado Chief Executive Officer Megan Scremin said the plane pull is one of the organization’s most popular events.

“The Plane Pull continues to be a favorite among our supporters and athletes alike,” said Scremin. “Our community showed an incredible level of support during the 2020 event, and we can’t wait to return for another outstanding day!”

Another plane pull will be held in Colorado Springs on Sept. 18.
