Hinkley gunshots end football game with Adams City officials that was posted to Facebook. “There were about eight gunshots in the fourth quarter,” said Adams City coach Wade Auld. “It was close enough that they stopped the game, and everyone went underneath the stadium. “ Aurora police officer Matthew Wells-Longshore said officers were working off-duty at the football game when they heard the shots. “It appears they came from the apartment complex just north of the high-school campus,” he said by email. “No one was struck or injured. I don’t have an exact number, but shell casings were found.” APS athletic director Casey Powell made the decision to clear the field

AURORA -- A shots-fired call near Hinkley High School forced an early end of a football game between Aurora Central and Adams City high schools Sept. 16. The Trojans won the game 28-13. Adams City High School athletic director Jacob Katz said officials stopped play “...because there were shots in the area...” surrounding Aurora Public Schools Stadium, which is on the campus of Hinkley High School. “It wasn’t at the game,” Katz said. No one connected with Adams City was in danger, according to a letter from Adams 14 School District
and the stands. Police investigated but made no arrests. “It was a little traumatic for a few of our kids, but it seemed to calm down as we stayed in the locker room,” Auld said. “The game was called, and we went home. (We were) driving on their 37 (37-yard line) with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.” The two teams are not in the same conference. The results count toward each teams’ Ratings Performance Index for postseason play, though. “Basically, a game is official whenever the referee says it is official, and that can be at any time during the game,” said Brad Cochi, who is CHSAA’s director of digital media
content. Bryan Zazuera led the Eagles’ defense with seven total tackles. Miguel Hernandez added six, and Cy Renney totaled five stops. Adams City takes a 1-3 record into its homecoming contest against Gateway. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25. This marked the second time in less than a week that shots have been heard near a high-school football game. Authorities investigated a similar incident near the North Area Athletic Complex near West 64th Avenue and state Highway 93 in Arvada. The homecoming game between Pomona and Doherty high schools concluded without interruption.
