BRIGHTON – Chris Flynn’s coaching career at Brighton got off to an electrifying start Aug. 27. The first-year coach guided the Brighton Bulldogs football team to a 34-6 victory over rival Prairie View during the season opener for both teams. Flynn is no stranger to the crosstown rivalry. He replaced Jeff Giger as head coach and has been on staff at Brighton High School as teacher and spent time asthe team’s defensive coordinator. “It was great for the players and staff to the get the first win,” Flynn said. “Every week should be like this. Prairie View played hard, and I think the kids on both sides showed a good mutual respect and demonstrated the type of sportsmanship that can make both schools proud.” The game wasn’t all pretty. Both squads had their share of earlyseason errors, and the game was delayed in the fourth quarter due to a lightning strike. The delay lasted nearly two hours, which required the packed stadium to be cleared and both teams to evacuate to the locker room. “They did a good job waiting out the storm,” Flynn said. “I am very happy how the kids responded and played after the break.” The contest got off to a slow start. Neither team was able to capitalize early. Prairie View’s first two possessions went deep into Brighton’s territory behind the strong running of Noah Leckemby and Ethan Cow-
ans. However, both drives stalled out in the red zone, and the ThunderHawks turned the ball over on downs. Brighton’s offense found things just as challenging against Prairie View’s aggressive pass rush. Bryson Powell and Cole Rodriguez each collected early sacks, and the pressure led to an interception for Quintin Winzent in the second quarter. Brighton’s two-minute offense started rolling late in the first half. Quarterback Nathaniel Griffeth connected on a 36-yard pass with Diavan Bejarano. Griffeth added a 22-yard scamper to set up a perfectly drawn 23-yard pass play to Noah Canale for the touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 advantage at the half. Griffeth and Canale connected on another touchdown in the fourth quarter before the game was delayed. MaxCisneros added another score for Brighton in the fourth to seal the victory. “Having not played a scrimmage this season, this game gave us our first chance to see a live opponent,” Flynn said. “While the win gives us some momentum going into next week, we have no shortage of things to clean up.” No stats were available for either team. Brighton heads to Chatfield at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at Jeffco Stadium in a non-league contest, while Prairie View has an away, nonleague game against Poudre at French Field in Fort Collins. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Sept. 3.
