The stars, space and the planets were on everyone’s minds Aug. 16 when Alsup Elementary debuted a brand-new school and STEAM program with a celebration. “It’s a great event that we have today and a great school. We want to make sure that all of our parents everywhere in our community know that they can have access to programs like this in school. So we’re going to be working hard and diligently to make sure that every single one of our students regardless of where they are within our district can have access to opportunities,” said Dr. Karla Loria, Instructional Coach and STEAM Coordinator Hattie Buikema helping a student blast off superintendent for Adams 14 School the rocket they built. Christensen is the designer of giant maps of Mars and the moon for the kids to learn about the planets in an interactive setting. “Dr. Aldrin allowed me to go out and be creative. He wants to see the kids engaged and inspired. I spend my days trying to figure out how to do that and how to take an idea that has some complexity to it, and turn it into something intuitive for kids,” said Christensen. “ It’s a natural fit and this is a school district that the superintendent is about inspiring kids. I’m impressed with the teachers I’ve met here. The administration, the teachers are the first rate, and this building is gorgeous,” he added. Hattie Buikema Instructional Coach and STEAM coordinator brought the kids out during the event to demonstrate a rocket they built and blasted it off. “They built the rocket from scratch and tiny, tiny pieces. They cut the pieces into the cardboard and measured down to inches. They did it all within just a few days of school. It’s what we’ve already accomplished. They also worked on how to operate the machinery. I’m very proud of them and it’s handsoff activity, “ said Buikema.
