School teachers in the Weld Re-8 School District are not happy with a proposed pay increase of 4.6 percent next school year. Some may follow a number of other teachers and leave the district. The district’s next negotiating session with the Fort Lupton Education Association is Thursday, June 2, according to Re-8 board President Susan Browne. The salary schedules for certified, classified and administrative employees were on the May 26 agenda. The proposal for licensed staff is based on years of experience, called “steps.” The district proposed adding 2.1 percent more money for step increases plus 2.5 percent to the base pay. As an example, a first-year through a fifth-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree could make $41,000. Among classified employees, the draft hourly pay scales for tutors range from $13 to $23.47. For an accountant, the pay ranges from $24.50 to $44.27. Future pay increases are tied to performance, not experience, in the district. The proposed salary ranges for Superintendent Alan Kaylor range from $135,000 to more than $182,000. The district’s school-to-alliance program manager could earn between $54,600 and $81,400.
