Douglas County School District administrators sought to move past the seemingly endless debate over critical race theory when district staff gave a presentation on the academic component of the district’s new equity policy at a June 22 meeting.

At previous board meetings, district staff have said DCSD is not teaching critical race theory, but some parents have argued otherwise, pointing to the district’s equity policy, training for staff, and a voluntary student club as evidence.

Instead of debating point-by-point what is or isn’t CRT, district staff on June 22 painted a picture of what the equity policy aims to do. Those goals include diversifying the curriculum and helping all students reach similar achievement levels.

astle Rock was full of American pride as the town celebrated the Fourth of July with a variety of events.

Celebrations started early in the day with the Run to Change Lives.

The inaugural Independence Day run hosted more than 400 participants at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. It was a celebration for all ages, with a special kids’ 1K run, live entertainment and food.

Castle Rock residents were also treated to a parade downtown before the day’s celebrations were capped off with the return of the fireworks show, as residents gathered at parks and areas throughout the town to enjoy.

Douglas County proceeds with possible new health department Step one is a community health assessment

Douglas County will soon begin a community health assessment and a public health improvement plan as it presses forward with the possibility of splitting from the Tri-County Health Department.

The assessment and plan, which are a requirement for any public health department, are intended to help commissioners understand more about public health needs in the county before they officially decide if they will make a countyspecific department.

Commissioners learned about these next steps and detailed information about Tri-County’s operations during a June 28 meet-

ing with their local public health working group.

In February, commissioners formed the group — made up of county staff — to investigate the possibility of leaving Tri-County.

The county started considering forming a new public health department several months into the COVID-19 pandemic. Commissioners initially said they would leave this summer but after reaching an agreement with Tri-County that allowed for more local control in public health orders, they decided to stay until at least 2023.

If the county does choose to form its own health department, the statutorily required community health assessment and public health improvement plan will already be completed.

meeting it expects both the plan and the assessment to be completed by the end of the year.

The assessment will look at what health problems exist in the community, who is impacted by those problems and what risk factors lead to them, said Shannon Breitzman with Health Management Associates. A recommendation on how to implement the improvement plan will also be expected by the end of the year.

Jennifer Ludwig, the deputy director for Tri-County, shared during the meeting that the health department is working with Adams and Arapahoe counties to determine what direction they want to go if Douglas County splits off.

“Adams and Arapahoe need to decide if we go forward as a two-county health department,” Ludwig said.

Tri-County hopes to also have a plan in place for their health department moving forward by the end of the year so it has a full year to transition.

“These are really critical decisions and we want to be as strategic as possible,” Ludwig said.

Existing department details County staff presented the commissioners with information on Tri-County’s structure, showing details and considerations for each service and how it could work with a new department.

The presentation also included the breakdown of how much of Tri-County’s services are used by Douglas County.

Nearly 75% of the health department’s work goes toward nursing, environmental health and nutrition, according to the presentation. Other services researched and discussed by staff include vital records, family health services, behavioral health, water and food inspections and emergency preparedness.

For many of these departments, the staff suggested ways that the services could either be added to the duties of the county’s existing departments or contracted out to organizations, such as nonprofits.

Some staff offered possible advantages for creating a new health department, including county-specific data and adding new, cutting-edge services to local public health systems.

The county commissioners could choose to appoint a local public health advisory board now to help guide the process, said Barbara Drake, the county staff member leading the project. The board members wouldn’t necessarily be members of a future public board of health.

Another public meeting on the topic will be in September.

“We will strategically leverage all of our communication assets to ensure that everyone who wants to be notified about and engage in this public process will have the opportunity to do so,” said Wendy Holmes, the county’s communications and public affairs director, during the meeting.

The county hopes to have town halls, email notifications about future meetings on the topic and a web page for all agendas and documents on the process. Holmes also hopes to livestream the meetings so they can be watched and reviewed later, she said.

In comments following the meeting, Commissioner Abe Laydon compared the county’s exploration of a new health department to a teenager getting ready to leave home for the first time.

“It’s tough, but you realize that they’re big enough and independent enough that they may need to chart their own course,” he said.

“It’s with gratitude and dedication to local control that we will continue to look at these documents thoughtfully.”

Remembering Officer Gordon Beesley Friends and colleagues recall a caring husband and father, dedicated colleague — and drummer

Officer Gordon Beesley was going through motorcycle training with the Arvada Police Department when he was asked to maneuver through an obstacle course, round a cone and return at speed as part of a test. Beesley completed the course, approached the cone and laid the motorcycle down to round the Beesley cone before the bike “high sided” and sent him airborne.

Beesley landed “like a cat,” picked up his bike and finished the test “with a smile,” according to Dave Snelling, Beesley’s longtime colleague at the APD, where Beesley worked for 19 years.

“He’s just one of those amazing humans,” said Snelling. “You literally could not make him angry. Every time you saw him, your day just got greater. The thing I love about Gordon the most — he was 6’2”, 6’3” — he referred to me as “Little Davey.’”And he was the only one I couldn’t get mad at for it.”

Beesley was killed on June 21 in Olde Town Arvada by a gunman who left behind writings proclaiming his hatred of Arvada police.

Beesley’s tenure with the APD — where he served as a school resource officer (SRO) at Oberon Middle School, Lincoln Academy and Excel Academy Charter School while working patrol in the summers — made him a visibly beloved figure in the community.

“You’ll have cops that grow their image around the badge,” said

Snelling. “I think the badge grew an image around Gordon. And Gordon humanized the badge. He had just as many friends outside the business as he did inside, but (being a police officer) wasn’t his identity when the uniform came off.

“He just liked the work,” Snelling continued. “Really, whenever he put that uniform on, you can’t help but see that there was a man behind that badge, not just a cop. That made him a fantastic cop.”

Outside of work, Beesley was known as a caring husband and father, avid mountain biker and talented drummer in local bands such as Brethren Fast, which draped an American flag adorned with the band’s name on the memorial outside of Arvada City Hall, and the Railbenders.

Patti Danford, the vice principal at Oberon Middle School, where Beesley most recently worked as an SRO, went to the Dark Horse in Boulder to see Beesley play with one of his bands.

“He was great,” said Danford. “It was so fun to see him in that environment. I took my husband and told him, ‘That’s Officer Beesley,’ and he said, ‘Wait, that’s the police officer you work with?’ And I said, ‘Yes, that’s Gordon.’ I’m really glad I was able to go see him do that; something he really loved.”

The Railbenders said they were not in a place to discuss Beesley after his passing but called him “the nicest guy you could ever know” in an email to the Arvada Press.

“Gordon was a founding member of our band and played on our debut record,” said Railbenders lead singer Jim Dalton via email. “He was a tremendous talent and performer. More importantly, he was a great friend. He was a gentle giant. He was the nicest guy you could ever know.

County residents attend Sandstone celebration ‘Together We Stand’ draws about 750 people to mark decline in COVID restrictions STAFF REPORT

An estimated 750 people attended a Douglas County-hosted event celebrating the end of many COVID19-related restrictions.

The “Together We Stand” event took place over about four hours at Sandstone Ranch and included music, food and hayrides.

The event, intended in part as a celebration of medical professionals, families, first responders and

others, was at the historic ranch portion of the open space property.

This area is only open for special events.

Sandstone Ranch, which opened to the public in 2020, is more than 2,000 acres of preserved land.

“Join your friends and neighbors as we honor those we’ve lost and celebrate the resilience and strength of so many during this past year,” according to a county news release about the event, “Including hard-working individuals and families, our business community, first responders, other public servants and the healthcare and public health professionals from throughout Douglas County communities.”

Douglas County named second healthiest in nation The report comes from U.S. News and World Report STAFF REPORT

Douglas County has been deemed the second-healthiest county in America, according to the 2021 Healthy Communities rankings by U.S. News and World Report, released in collaboration with the Aetna Foundation.

The county was also ranked second in the nation in 2020 and in 2018. In 2019, it was ranked as the healthiest in the country.

According to the 2021 rankings of the top 500 healthiest communities nationwide, Colorado is home to five of the top 10 healthiest counties in the nation, including Broomfield County as fifth; San Miguel County as sixth; Pitkin County as seventh; and Routt County as 10th.

Now in its fourth year, the Healthiest Communities report and accompanying analysis are

based on a methodology evaluating nearly 3,000 counties and county equivalents nationwide across 84 health-related metrics in 10 categories -- community vitality, equity, economy, education, environment, food and nutrition, population health, housing, infrastructure and public safety.

Douglas County’s highestranked category was economy, with a score of 99.9 out of 100. The county’s lowest score was housing, which was 61.6 out of 100.

According to the U.S. News data, about 4 percente of Douglas County’s population is without health insurance, and 3 percent are in poverty. Life expectancy is 84 years, which is more than six years longer than the national median.

There is a 91 percent high-school graduation rate and 66 percent of the population has an advanced degree, according to the data.

The median household income is $119,730, and 68 percent of the population lives within a half mile of a park.

This year’s rankings are accompanied by tools highlighting county-level COVID-19 vaccine rates and other pandemic data, as well as editorial explorations of equity and mental health.

The COVID-19 tools complement the rankings data to highlight the relationship between the coronavirus pandemic and community health.

Based on a U.S. News analysis, counties that performed well in the healthiest communities rankings have slightly lower COVID-19 case rates than average.

The project serves as a tool to inform residents, community health leaders and elected officials about policies and best practices for better health outcomes by assessing which communities offer their citizens the greatest opportunity to live a productive, healthy life, according to the release.

Mental health crisis lingers from pandemic Pot is boiling over as lawmakers, health officials react to growing number of cases

Before the 2020 pandemic, Kelly Blike described the behavioral health situation for both adolescents and adults in Colorado as a boiling pot of water, filled to the rim. Now, that pot is spilling over with no containment in site.

“There has always been a mental health crisis in Colorado, COVID just echoed it,” said Blike, a social worker at the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital. “The isolation and lack of physical contact has exaggerated a problem that was already in place. We cannot ignore the problem. We have a long way to go.”

As businesses and life appear to be returning to normal from the pandemic, Blike said hospitals are still dealing with the residual effects.

Dr. Ben Usatch, director of emergency medicine at the Highlands Ranch hospital, said the 21-bed emergency room has a handful of patients needing mental health care on any given day. The numbers are not decreasing, and he does not think they will any time soon.

“There is a post-COVID syndrome

that we are going to be cleaning up for a long time,” he said.

In June, Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) declared a crisis. The statewide organization reported an increase in young patients attempting suicide and presenting to local emergency rooms with issues re-

lated to substance abuse and eating disorders.

CHC has facilities around the Denver metro area in Highlands Ranch, Broomfield, Centennial, Parker, Wheat Ridge, Denver and Aurora.

Dr. Jenna Glover, director of psychology training at CHC, said in past years, there was a decrease in suicide attempts and emergency room visits for behavioral health in the summer months. That is not the case this year.

“We’re anticipating a spike in these visits as kids return to a ‘normal’ school year where they may be confronting challenges with setbacks in their education and inperson interactions,” she said.

Usatch said he has never seen so many adolescent patients being admitted to the hospital because substance abuse with drugs and alcohol has become debilitating.

Blike said during the pandemic parents were struggling to cope with restrictions, changes and finances.

It is no surprise that children and teens were just as heavily impacted, she said.

In June, CHC called on the state Legislature to step up and start helping them deal with the growing crisis. Since the call for help, Sarah Davis, a media relations coordinator for CHC, said lawmakers did take a step forward in the 2021 legislative session.

Heidi Baskfield, CHC vice president of population health and advocacy, said passing Senate Bill 137, the Behavioral Health Recovery Act, is a step in the right direction.

The new law provides short-term investment in critical priority areas like community-based youth crisis services, additional residential beds, and more resources for school-based health centers.

Another step in the right direction, Baskfield said is House Bill 1258. The bill, Rapid Mental Health Response for Colorado Youth, establishes a temporary program to facilitate youth mental health

services in response to identified needs.

On June 18, Gov. Jared Polis signed HB 1258 into law during a special ceremony that included bipartisan support from Reps. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, D-Commerce City, and Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, and Sens. Janet Buckner, D-Aurora, and Rob Woodward, RLoveland.

As the bill was signed by Polis, Van Winkle said HB 1258 is one of the most important pieces of legislation passed in the 2021 session.

Michaelson Jenet sponsored both HB 1258 and SB 137. The Adams County representative said when she ran for office her primary platform was youth mental health.

After the 2021 session, Michaelson Jenet said she is happy the two bills passed because they are not just Band-Aids on a growing problem.

They are real steps forward to help a lot of people, she said.

“For years I have been banging the drum that we are in a suicide pandemic,” Michaelson Jenet said. “(HB 1258) opens up access for kids who are not getting the support they need right now. This will help all demographics and ages.”

Baskfield said the rapid response program will provide youths easy access to screening and treatment through an app-based screening tool. The $9 million bill will create the Temporary Youth Mental Health Services Program, reimbursing providers for three mental health sessions for young patients.

To put in perspective what HB 1258 can do for Colorado’s youths, Michaelson Jenet noted that text in the bill says it will help 26,000 young people. However, she believes it will help reach thousands more, as the tools are available for free.

Michaelson Jenet said the bills passed in 2021 are just a steppingstone — the state has a long road to recovery in addressing mental health issues for both adults and adolescents.

Former state legislator joins Sterling Ranch staff Susan Beckman will present development plans STAFF REPORT

The Sterling Ranch Development Company has added Susan Beckman to its team as the new director of entitlement, according to a press release.

Entitlements are the legal processes in which developers obtain, from a governing board — in this case the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners — approval for their development plans.

“In my role as the Sterling Ranch entitlement director, I ensure the entitlement process for Sterling Ranch is timely, legal and transparent,” Beckman said. “I make presentations to the Douglas

Beckman was a Republican state representative from Littleton until the start of the 2020 legislative session, when she abruptly resigned to take a job in the last year of the Trump administration as a Department of Health and Human Services regional director. She previously served as an Arapahoe County commissioner and Littleton city councilmember.

Beckman will be responsible for coordinating, negotiating and presenting all entitlement activities and strategies for Sterling Ranch.

Entitlements also include the legal recording of zoning amend-

ments, neighborhood plans, preliminary plans, plats and related documents.

Sterling Ranch Development Company is the developer of Sterling Ranch, a master-planned community in northwest Douglas County.

describe the amazing human being Gordon was. He was truly a light in our city and now there is a heavy darkness felt in his absence.”

Danford added that while Beesley’s passions shone through in all aspects of his life, he remained committed to his role as an SRO at Oberon.

“He’s multi-dimensional and he had lots of interest outside of school,” Danford said. “When he was at school, he was super professional, super focused. He was there to do a job but had some deep passions. From our conversations, it was abundantly clear that his biggest priorities were his wife and two kids. He was, in my mind, first and foremost a family man.”

Heidi Cuppari, a family friend of the Beesleys, whose children attend the same school, said she was devastated when she heard the news Beesley had been shot.

“My heart just broke in a million pieces,” said Cuppari, “because I knew how kind he was. It was particularly heart-wrenching for me because I know the boys and I knew him and I knew how caring and what an epic, amazing human being he was. And his spirit will always be here.”

Cuppari started a GoFundMe that has been authorized by Beesley’s widow to raise funds for their family shortly after Beesley’s passing.

“We organized the GoFundMe,” Cuppari said, “just to show that we

are here and that we recognize what a tragedy this is.”

The APD has confirmed that the suspect in Beesley’s death, Ronald Troyke, left a note expressing his hatred for the department in particular, stating in part, “My goal today is to kill Arvada PD officers,” according to a June 25 press release.

“The scariest part of this entire thing,” Snelling said, “is that we now know the narrative that the suspect specifically targeted, ambushed and murdered. And it was one of the nicest people that anyone could ever know.”

State lifts rules for masks, quarantines, outbreaks in schools Updated public health order lasts until Aug. 1 unless extended

In yet another major lifting of state-imposed coronavirus restrictions, Colorado released an updated public health order that removes mask requirements for schools and repeals the mandate for school protocols regarding outbreaks and other instances of COVID-19 cases.

The updated order — which took effect July 1 and expires on Aug. 1 unless extended — whittles Colorado’s state-imposed virus restrictions down to a point where they leave public settings in most Coloradans’ daily lives unaffected.

Here’s a look at what changed with the updated public health order.

Mask requirements Previously, the list of settings where masks were required for unvaccinated individuals included — among other places — preschool through grade 12 schools and child care centers and services, including camps. The requirement also applied to staff of Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles offices.

The updated order removes those rules and adds a requirement that unvaccinated staff use medical-grade masks.

Masks are now required for unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated patients, residents and visitors — and medical-grade masks are required for unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated staff — in the following settings that serve vulnerable or at-risk populations: • Homeless shelters; • Prisons and jails; and • Emergency medical and other health care settings.

All of the settings identified in the list above are “strongly encouraged to require all of their unvaccinated and not fully vaccinated staff to participate in COVID-19 testing,” the order’s text says.

That includes daily rapid testing every day that they work in the facility or setting, or once-weekly polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, testing.

Exceptions to the mask requirements include Coloradans 11 years of age or younger and those who “cannot medically tolerate” a face covering, the order says.

School case response rules lifted The updated order also repeals the requirement for schools to follow the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment guidance on outbreaks and other instances of COVID-19 cases.

Previously, the order said: “Schools and child care shall work with their local public health agencies as COVID-19 cases occur, and shall follow the CDPHE guidance for Cases and Outbreaks in Schools and Child Care.” The guidance is listed at covid19.colorado.gov/cases-and-outbreakschild-care-schools.

The lifting of that requirement means people who have close contact with a person with a positive COVID-19 test or symptoms generally no longer need to quarantine.

“Schools no longer need to adhere to the broader quarantine and isolation requirements in previous (public health orders),” said a statement from the Colorado State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the state public-health department.

“However, state and local public health officials have statutory authority to institute quarantine and isolation as needed to stop the

spread of disease. These officials may continue to require isolation of ill individuals and quarantine for individuals who are suspected to have COVID-19,” the statement said.

School districts and local public health agencies could make their own decisions as to whether to impose outbreak, quarantine or mask requirements that go beyond what the state mandates.

Local limits generally lifted The state’s color-coded COVID-19 dial was the set of restrictions counties had to follow based on the local spread of the virus.

The system affected capacity at restaurants, other businesses, indoor and outdoor events, and other settings. Colorado originally implemented the dial last Sept. 15.

Colorado allowed the dial to expire as expected in mid-April, but health agencies in the Denver metro area extended the dial system locally as a rise in virus cases and the continued spread of COVID-19 variants kept health officials worried.

Since mid-May, several metro counties are now operating in what they call “level clear,” generally with no local restrictions — and that’s likely to continue unless things take a turn for the worse.

A month and a half after Colorado let its dial expire, the state also lifted capacity restrictions on large indoor gatherings, a limit that had remained after the state dial’s end.

Colorado’s Public Health Order 20-20 remains in effect and includes requirements for nursing facilities, assisted living residences, group homes and other care facilities.

‘Snapback restrictions’ still possible A “snapback,” or return, to more state-imposed coronavirus restrictions could occur if hospitalizations rise high enough, ac-

cording to a news release from the state public-health department.

In counties whose resident hospitalizations threaten to exceed 85% of hospital or hospital system capacity, the state public-health department may require implementing additional restrictions, the public health order’s text says.

Enforcement Colorado’s COVID-19 public health orders are generally the kind that rely on voluntary compliance.

“Local authorities are encouraged to determine the best course of action to encourage maximum compliance,” the text of the order says.

But failure to comply with the order could result in penalties, including jail time and fines, according to the order’s text.

Public transportation Nothing in Colorado’s order changes or repeals the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s order requiring the wearing of masks on public transportation, according to Colorado’s order. The CDC’s requirements are located at cdc.gov/quarantine/masks/mask-travel-guidance. html.

Passengers on public conveyances — meaning airplanes, trains, subways, buses, taxis and rideshares — traveling into, within or out of the United States, as well as conveyance operators, meaning crew, drivers, conductors and other workers, regardless of their vaccination status, are required to wear a mask over their nose and mouth, according to the CDC’s website.

All people, including workers and members of the public, regardless of their vaccination status, are required to wear a mask in indoor areas of transportation hubs, meaning airports, bus or ferry terminals, and train or subway stations, in the U.S., according to the CDC’s website.

Who you calling belligerent and quick to take offense?

M

y friend, Mark, and his girlfriend, Deborah, have tickets for a vacation in Hawaii. Sounds great.

But the timing isn’t.

The tickets were QUIET a gift, he told me, and arrangements DESPERATION began before all of the traveling restrictions were put into place.

They’ve both been vaccinated ... but they have had to be COVID-19 tested.

Their carrier, Southwest, is having some problems.

I remember the good old days when I’d hang around the railyards with my guitar and wait for an open freight car to come along. I’d jump on board and sing Woody Guthrie songs from here to Chi-town.

Well, maybe not.

But I do remember when I could drive to Stapleton, buy a ticket, and board a plane without being scanned, groped, sniffed, scrutinized or disrobed.

Air travel isn’t what it used to be and isn’t what it used to be two years ago.

Now there’s a good chance a passenger will decide he or she wants to beat up a flight attendant.

Theories abound.

These aerial skirmishes are a direct consequence of a period in American history when individuals, long thought to be willing to cooperate and act like adults, are now shedding that illusion and reverting to primordial behavior on flights, at NBA games and in fast food restaurants.

A recent incident at an Ohio McDonald’s devolved into an argument when a customer became irate and went berserk because an employee would not mix flavors of a slushy drink together.

The customer now faces assault charges.

Is it safe to leave your home?

Probably not, but what other choice do we have?

In the case of air travel: none. Unless you have your own jet or access to one.

What has become of us?

Something I began noticing in the mid-1990s led to an earlier retirement than I planned.

Disrespect in the classroom.

Students were more adversarial than ever, confrontational, and disputatious.

I was threatened and stalked.

There were no physical altercations, just verbal disputes that were out in the open.

Many led to grievances and hearings. The students who didn’t drop out were asked to leave.

Over what? Not always but most often: grades.

Grades replaced learning as the primary focus of many college students.

There was a time when grade disputes were addressed during office hours. Then they wicked into the classroom.

Now it seems disagreements with authority, rules and regulations —

reasonable ones too — have popped up in places where there didn’t exist before.

The Ohio woman went behind the counter, struck and injured two female McDonald’s employees.

At least the other customers could leave if they wanted to.

“Oh, nothing out of ordinary.

“That’s nice, honey.”

Mark is a noted local wit. Hawaii has something to look forward to. I told him to take along a big supply of Hawaiian punch lines. Get it?

Having traveled Michael Norton for most of my career I have shared many planes, trains, and automobiles with people who started out as strangers, but as we parted ways, we separated as friends and connected in some way.

What always stood out to me was the sense of pride, joy, and enthusiasm many of the people I met had about their work. I have met software developers working on a unique program to improve disease management, teachers and

professors who beamed when talking about their students, doctors, nurses, lawyers, bakers, athletes, actors, taxidermists, salespeople, CEOs, stay-at-home parents, and so many others that it is impossible to list them all here.

And as I look back on some incredible memories of my time spent traveling, I am most grateful for the conversations with my seatmates as they shared their passion and heart for the work they did. They always took their heart to work. They went to work with a servant’s heart. They saw themselves as more than an employee, consultant, or owner of a company. They saw themselves as being a difference-maker in some way.

I remember sitting on a flight with one maintenance worker who was employed at the same hospital for many years. He didn’t talk about the grind, or the hard work, or the long hours. His eyes shined and his smile widened when he spoke about the cleanliness of the rooms he cared for, his responsibility to do his part in saving lives. Yes, this man talked about his role in saving lives as he held himself personally account-

able for keeping “his” patients safe from any germs. Yes, he said, “His” patients. Wow! That is pride, joy, enthusiasm, and such an inspiring example of always taking our heart to work.

Today our supply chains are struggling in many cases because there are shortages of workers. Many have decided not to return to work right now. Maybe it’s because they don’t feel safe, some are worried about the virus, others about workplace safety, and sadly, many who would still rather receive unemployment benefits and stimulus dollars instead of going back to work. It is hard to bring our hearts to work when we aren’t going to work.

There are stories upon stories of our grandparents and great-grandparents and their tremendous work ethic. Almost all of us have heard the saying, “No matter what you do, do it to the best of your ability. If you are sweeping floors, be the best floor sweeper this world has ever known.” Whatever it is we are doing in life, when we do it with heart, we will feel so much better than finishing our day and just punching out.

Punching in and punching out each day is up to each one of us. If that is how we see our day, then it will be almost impossible to find joy at work. And I am not singling out any level of an organization or any specific job function. From my friend and seatmate who takes such pride in his work, all the way up to the CEO of any company, if we aren’t bringing our heart to work, then punching in and punching out is all that our day will be and feel like.

Gadgets and tricks to age in place

hinking ahead and preparing your home environment may enable you to live longer and safely in your home. Many changes are simple, inexpensive, and easy to do yourself and allow you to remain home despite physical and mild cognitive LIVING & limitations.

AGING WELL There are commonly used lowcost and adaptive devices (e.g., bath benches, hand-held showers, and automatic lights) online (like Amazon) and possible free at loan closets and Jay Berger nonprofit health charities. These personal gadgets and recent technological advances not only have made aging in place more feasible and affordable by enhancing your safety, reducing your effort, and maintaining/regaining your independence, they reduce the associated frustrations, and boost confidence.

Tremors and arthritis are common impairments in older adults, and can affect the ability to live longer at home safely. A wide variety of adaptive devices can assist with daily activities (such as eating, dressing, bathing, and preparing meals) improving your grip, dexter-

ity, and steadiness. There are wearable devices; nonslip, suction, and silicone-based items that secure plates and bowls to the table; and alternate handle, weighted and larger handled utensils. Some of the more sophisticated gadgets include: 1. Robotic vacuum 2. Safety doorbells to view who’s at the door (even if you’re not home) 3. Voice activated devices like Alexa and Google Voice that turn on/off, adjust and change lights/ music/temperature and more, call someone, and give you reminders 4. Smart watches with fall detection sensors can automatically alert someone 5. Medication systems that automatically dispense at the correct time Consider the weight, size, ease of use, safety and return policy when making a purchase. Understand your specific needs. A “lightweight” step ladder to one person may not be lightweight enough if you have pain, weakness, or other limitations. Pay attention to safety concerns. If it’s electric, or gets hot, does it have an auto shut-off or temperature limit? Check dimensions. Wheelchairs need to be wide enough to fit you and a winter coat, and high enough that you can easily get in and out of it. Walkers and wheelchairs need to be able to fit through doors and hallways, and

Animals Around the Rock education series coming STAFF REPORT

Whether it is raptors, reptiles or other creepy crawlies, Castle Rock has a whole host of wild residents.

The characteristics of these animals will be illustrated at the Animals Around the Rock educational series.

Presented in partnership with the Douglas Land Conservancy, attendees can join Nature’s Educators and the Denver Audubon Society to discover more about the various types of animals that live over, under and around Castle Rock. They can meet these animal ambassadors and see a presentation about their personal stories. Plus, several presentations allow participants to stay after to get an up-close and personal experience with the animals.

Each event is free, and registration is recommended but not required (except for Batty About Castle Rock, for which registration is required). Bring the family and a picnic dinner and get ready for a wild experience.

Raptors Over the Rock Tuesday, July 13, 6-7:30 p.m.

The Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park Learn about the characteristics that define raptors, including where they live and how they hunt. Dogs are not allowed at this event. Rain date is Tuesday, July 20.

Reptiles Under the Rock Tuesday, Aug. 10, 6-7:30 p.m.

The Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park Meet six native reptiles and learn about their habitats, diets, defenses and more. Rain date is Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Batty About Castle Rock Tuesday, Sept. 14, 6-7 p.m.

The Millhouse at Philip S. Miller Park Learn about local bats, adaptations and the benefits they bring to our ecology. Space is limited to 90 people, so registration is required.

If your medical devices operate or recharge on electricity, inform your local fire department and utility company to prioritize you in the event of a fire or electricity outage. Maintain a three-day emergency stash of bottled water, working flashlights and fresh batteries, shelf-stable food you can open and eat without devices, important numbers written down, extra oxygen tanks if appropriate, blankets, and if possible, a threemonth supply of medications.

Stay in your best possible health.

Get regular vision and corrective glasses checks; visual problems cause many falls. Keep moving.

Walking requires no special skill, place, or equipment, except a decent pair of shoes. Stay well hydrated unless you are on a fluid-restricted diet. Stay mentally challenged.

Like your body, if you don’t use it, you lose it. If you aren’t getting a good night’s sleep, talk to your

doctor. Sleep cleanses your brain, recharges your body, and keeps your immune system strong.

Planning ahead to age in place is insurance; if you are set up and the unforeseen happens and debilitates you, you’re covered. Without it, should something happen, not only will you be scrambling to correct it, it may be unaffordable or not feasible to make changes in time.

Even if the issue is not permanent, it could be the difference between home or spending some time at a skilled nursing facility.

Christan Brand

July 20, 1978 - June 18, 2021

Christan “Chrissy” Brand, 42, of Franktown, CO, passed away at her home on June 18, 2021. She was born July 20, 1978 in Denver, CO, the daughter of Lowell Hal and Kathy Turner. Chrissy was a 1996 graduate of Ponderosa High School in Parker, CO and attended the University of Colorado at Denver for two years. Upon the death of her father in 1997, she managed the family business, Turner Stables in Parker, CO. On September 27, 2003, she married Eric Paul Brand in Annapolis, MD. She and her husband Eric were cattle ranchers on the farm they shared in Franktown, CO. Chrissy also was a Show Horse trainer.

Chrissy was a talented artist who did beautiful pencil sketches. She participated in numerous competitive horse show events over the years, including the National Western Stock Show. She was an avid reader and had a great love of books, history and nature. She

had a special passion for all animals…horses, dogs, cats, cows and just about anything that walks, flies, swims or crawls.

Survivors are her husband, Eric Paul Brand, Franktown, CO; mother, Kathy L. Turner, Parker, CO; uncle, Terry Neil (Kathy) King, Barrington, IL; cousin, Shari (James) Ashley, Parker, CO; and her mother-in-law, Sue (Pete) Bielski, Annapolis, MD. She was predeceased by her father, Lowell Hal Turner, grandparents, Neil L. King and Joan King, and her aunt Sharon Noel and her uncle Robert Noel.

To help others, Christan chose to be an organ and tissue donor.

Services will be held on Saturday July 17, 2021 at 11:00am at Spring Valley Cemetery, 13944 Spring Valley Road, Larkspur, CO 80118.

Helen Bodie

Helen Bodie, 95, of Castle Rock, passed away Wednesday, June 23. She is survived by her four daughters and their husbands: Diane and John Montagne of Denver, Debborah and Kenneth Kresge of Harrisburgh Pa, Nancy and Craig Ferris of Castle Rock, and Sarah and Charley Ellison of Westcliffe, CO. Her four beloved grandchildren: grandchildren Johanna Montagne, Evan Montagne, Leland Ellison and John Ellison knew her to be a forever youthful soul who left a magnificent legacy. She will be sorely missed.

Helen Cagwin met her husband, John Bodie, at

Syracuse University in 1946. Upon his passing in 2017, they’d been married 69 years.

Helen was a fun-loving, devoted mother, avid equestrian and dog lover. Her fondness for singing was evidenced around the family piano and at New Hope Presbyterian Church.

She and her friends could often be found laughing at Pegasus and Bud’s Grill. Her faithful friendship and joyful outlook will be dearly missed. Her adoration of Castle Rock’s train whistles was legendary.

8/7/1944 - 6/23/2021 Penny (Reeves) Summers, 76, of Arvada, CO, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, on June 23, 2021. Penny was born August 7, 1944, in Success, Arkansas. Penny married the love of her life, William Paul Summers, Sr., on June 13, 1964. They recently celebrated 57 wonderful years together surrounded by family. Penny’s beloved son William Paul Summers, Jr., preceded her in death in 2015. She is survived by her husband, two daughters and multiple grandchildren.

Rounding up the cycling trails

If you’re new to the area, or just want to branch out, here’s a must-try list of some of the best rides around nicipal lots or parking spaces a bit east of the trailhead.

Lucy Hanna said she’s just visiting but couldn’t wait to hop on a bike — a loaner from her niece Claire — and check out the Clear Creek Trail.

“You have some beautiful trails out here,” she said. “This is the second time I’ve checked out a new ride since I’ve been here.”

She said it’s nothing like her rides back home in Louisiana.

“You can’t even really think about it (cycling) this time of year.

The humidity is just … I don’t know … oppressive,” she said.

Those of us lucky enough to call the metro area home have miles of trails to choose from. Throw in some of the lowest relative humidity in the nation and summer can be a downright pleasant time to go riding.

That said, here’s a list of some of the most popular places to get back on the bike and enjoy the fleeting summer months while you can.

Bear Creek Bike Trail You can pick up the trail near US 285 and River Point Parkway.

There are parking lots near the South Platte, where the Mary Carter Greenway Trail and Platte River Trail meet.

The trail, running alongside the Bear Creek corridor pretty closely, offers stunning views of the western foothills as you make your way through Bear Valley, Bear Creek Lake Park and ultimately into

Kipling West section of the Clear Creek Trail in Wheat Ridge.

According to reviews on TrailLink.com, the Bear Creek Trail is a relatively flat, easy ride that can be enjoyed by cyclists of all abilities.

On the west side of the trail, you can find parking along Morrison Road or one of the parking lots in downtown Morrison.

High Line Canal Trail Starting in Aurora and ending some 71 miles away in Roxborough Park, the High Line Canal Trail runs through the metro area’s southern suburbs. Along the way, you’ll go through Goldsmith Gulch, deKoevend Park and Horseshoe Park just to name a few, before the trail ends near Platte Canyon Reservoir.

From the Waterton Canyon Trailhead parking lot, it’s just a short distance to the High Line Canal Trailhead.

Starting from points east, consult

a trail map and follow municipal parking regulations.

Clear Creek Trail From Thornton to Golden, this 20-mile trail has a bit of everything.

A slight incline that tops out at just over 5,800 feet adds to the challenge, but the scenery is said by TrailLink reviewers, to be worth the effort. Included in the ride are views of North and South Table Mountain, thrown in for free. You’ll cut through a good chunk of Wheat Ridge and make your way between Prospect, Tabor and West lakes as you head toward I-70.

Historic Golden vibes abound as you cross Ford Street on your way to the trail’s end near Clear Creek Canyon Road, just east of Indian Gulch.

Cherry Creek Trail On the southeast side of town, the Cherry Creek Trail gives cyclists the opportunity to ride from Cherry Creek Reservoir to Downtown Denver.

At around 20-miles-long, the trail takes riders through some of the coolest urban areas in the city. Starting your ride near Confluence Park in Lodo, you’ll make your way along Cherry Creek as it ambles toward the southeastern suburbs, cutting through Glendale and Virginia Village before ending at Cherry Creek Reservoir.

For the super adventurous, the trail continues all the way to the small, rural, Franktown — another 20 miles south.

There are several rest stops along the route, with restrooms for those in need. And due to the proximity to the city center, it’s not unheard of to see inline skaters, folks on scooters or even e-bikes moving pretty fast, so be aware.

Veteran Denver cyclist Michael Lewis said he’s ridden most of the trails the city has to offer. He said he’s partial to the South Platte River Trail himself, but said for people just starting out, or those looking for a nice ride with a lot less distance involved, a lap or two around Sloan’s Lake or Washington Park is hardly ever a bad idea.

“There’s such a great cycling community here,” he said. “Almost everywhere you go, you’ll find people who just love to be out there (cycling).”

Cobblestone Ranch Park construction begins Castle Rock council, town staff celebrate official groundbreaking

Castle Rock town staff and council members took time to celebrate open space and community last week, participating in the groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the first phase of construction of Cobblestone Ranch Park.

Jeff Smullen, assistant director for the parks and recreation department, said planning for the park dates back to 2019, noting there were some planning obstacles due to the pandemic in 2020.

Now, Smullen said the real work begins as construction will continue over the next year to build the $5.6 million first phase of the massive project. In March, the council approved a contract with White Construction Group to start the 12-acre first phase. Completion of the first phase is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2022.

While the first phase consists of 12 acres, the entire Cobblestone Ranch Park is a 168-acre site on the eastern edge of Castle Rock, along Castle Oaks Drive to the south, Arabella Drive to the west, Cherry Creek Trail to the east and McMurdo Gulch to the north.

This property was acquired to serve as a regional destination, much like Philip S. Miller Park.

District 2 Councilmember Laura Cavey said the park design is a true reflection of the town listening to residents. Based on citizen input, the first phase will include two playgrounds, six pickleball courts, a pump track for children to improve their biking skills and a half-court for basketball.

Even more important, Cavey said there will be operating public restrooms.

Mayor Jason Gray said the Cobblestone Ranch Park project is an example of the council’s commitment to creating open space and parks in the community.

“We want more parks. We want more money for parks,” he said.

International Folk Art Market returns New Mexico event comes back after cancellation during pandemic year

As we contemplate possibilities for summer travel, some readers will be heading south to that favorite destination: Santa Fe, New Mexico. And perhaps some of those will want to visit IFAM, the International Folk Art Market.

It didn’t happen last year, but all artists accepted for IFAM 2020 were invited to participate in 2021, when Santa Fe’s International Folk Art Market will be held at the Milner Plaza on Museum Hill — for two weeks: July 7 to July 11 and July 14 to July 18, with different artists each week — and in keeping with COVID safe practices.

Tickets are sold at two-hour intervals and in some cases, are sold out, so we wanted to caution readers who plan to attend to visit folkartmarket.org in advance for information and reservations.

My memory of visiting this very special event is of just showing up and that’s not workable this year ... a maximum of 200 guests at a time will be able to visit the area. (And you’ll definitely want reservations for a place to sleep, as well.)

The nonprofit organization has offered workshops for visiting artists and their representatives and cooperated with the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs over the years it has operated. In

recent years, IFAM has opened a retail store at 620 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe, adding to the extensive choices one finds there, especially in the folk art category and from the skilled Indigenous artists who sell their handmade wares near the Plaza.

Among first-time artists, we are told of Gary Gonzalez, of Taller Centro Artesanal Del Sombrero Wayuu (Colombia), who brings hats and Julio Laja Chichicaxtle, of Manteles Borados Otomi Hechos A Mano (Mexico) who will bring textiles ...

I was intrigued to read about Cuban folk artist Cenia Gutierrez Alfonso, who is known as a painter of guijes, or fairies.

What delightful images for a child’s room — or a grownup’s study or living room!

Alfonso is quoted: “It is about materializing dreams, reflecting the world that surrounds me, where urban and rural life intermingle ...”

This market is just one facet of visiting Santa Fe, of course, but offers a sweet time in a world of creatives, who offer color and imaginative ways with many materials, resulting in products that simply make us happy. Or, of course, if selected as a gift for another person, should brighten a table, corner, wall or shelf.

Valor wins state in girls 5A track Grandview and Cherry Creek take runners-up spots

Valor Christian track coach Brian Kula had a good feeling about this season, and the girls track team turned the hopes of their coach into a state championship.

The Eagles won the Class 5A girls state championship on June 26 which was the final day of the 3-day state track meet at Jefferson County Stadium.

“We knew we had a strong team but they still has to execute and they did a phenomenal job of that,” said Kula. “We had a couple little hiccups we had to deal with but we really had a good day final day.

“This group of girls have been working hard for two years now and it just didn’t happen over night. We just got off to a good start in the hurdles. Our little freshman Madi Procter placed fifth and then Camille (Peisner) won the 100 and we just started gaining momentum and things kept falling into place. I’m really proud. They have not lost a state track meet since 2017.”

Valor won the 2018 4A state girls championship, won the 5A title in 2019 and then the 2020 state track meet was canceled because of COVID concerns.

Peisner won both the 100 meters (11.88) and the 200 meters (23.92) and was second in the 400 meters to help the Eagles gain points on the final day which ended in rain.

Junior Kylie Bahr was first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.93.

“I felt like I ran pretty good,” said Bahr. “It was a PR which was nice.

Going in I just tired to stay super calm. It (winning state) shows how good our coaching staff is and how much effort we put in at practice and stuff.”

The Eagles put more distance between them and the field with a victory in the 4x400 relay in 3:52.92.

In the boys 5A meet, Grandview won the state title with 78.5 points and Cherry Creek was second (57) and Valor Christian third (44).

Cherry Creek came up short with points in the team standings but Riley Stewart, Parker Wolfe and Ky Oday captured individual events.

In fact, Stewart won four events.

She was part of Creek’s winning 3,200 relay team, won the 800 meters (2:09.60) on June 24, the 3,200 run (10.31.45) on June 25 and set a state meet record of 4:45.96 on June 26 in the 1,600 meters.

“I knew my legs were tired from this week but I just had to push through,” said the junior who had previously set a Colorado record of 4:44.13 in the 1,600. “It’s amazing to set a state record. Like two weeks ago I had the record like individually for Colorado and now to have the state one too it is just so awesome and just to be able to come back here

next year and try to push that, I’m just so happy.”

Oday won the boys 400 meters (48.00) and was second in the 100yard dash. Wolfe, a senior who will run at North Carolina next year, took the boys 3,200 in 9:07.87 but finished second to Mountain Vista senior Harrison Witt in the 1,600 meters.

Witt, who will be heading to Princeton, ran past Wolfe on the final lap and posted a state record of 4:04.36.

He also won the 800 meters in meet record time of 1:48.75.

“It was incredible to race against him (Wolfe),” said Witt. He’s one of the best athletes of our generation.

“I just wanted him not to get away before the last lap. I’m very confident in my kick and speed so I had to keep him in range to make a move. When he opened the inside up for me I just figured it was time to go and leave it all on the track.”

Other winners included Fabiola Belihi of Regis Jesuit in the 5A girls long jump with a leap of 18 feet and Noah Kelly of Lutheran who won 3A pole vault by clearing 14 feet.

Creek takes state swimming championship Medley relay team sets state record

It was the first event of the finals on June 24 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton but it inspired Cherry Creek to capture the Class 5A boys state swimming championship.

Creek’s 200-yard medley relay team set a Colorado state record with a time of 1:28.61 to break the previous best of 1:30.58 by Regis Jesuit in 2018 and that set the tone for Creek to win the state title with depth and plenty of swimmers scoring points.

Cherry Creek had 530 points with Regis Jesuit coming in second in the team standings with 400.5 points.

Heritage was third with 276 points in the finals that saw five state record eclipsed.

It was the second straight state title win for the Bruins who were the 2019 state champions and it was the 12thstate boys swimming trophy that the team has carried home to Greenwood Village.

“That was our goal in the first event because we wanted that and it was just a pop and we hoped it would translate to the rest of the meet and it did,” said Cherry Creek coach Chris Loftis.

“I feel fantastic,” he continued.

“It was a most difficult year and we weren’t sure how to approach. We thought 2019 was a pretty dominating team but this year was more dominating not to mention 2020 that didn’t even take place (season was canceled because of COVID). I’m proud of these kids because they worked so hard.”

Senior Bryce Ortanes was on both record setting relay teams. He teamed with Martin Cade, Henry Batson and Will Dravenstoff on the record-setting medley relay foursome.

that was timed in a state record time of 1:22.05 to break the old record of 1:22.74 set by Regis in 2013.

“It was unreal to set the records,” said Ortenes who was the runnerup in the 50 freestyle. “For our team it is never about the individuals, it’s always swimming for the guys next to you and touching the wall first.

“We were not cocky coming into the state meet that we could do it but confident in the fact we could get this because we knew we were swimming for the guys who didn’t get the experience of another time last year. There was a lot of motivation behind us and it carried through the entire meet.”

Alex McMahon of Heritage established a record in the 50 yard freestyle of 19.82 and the senior also was the winner of the 100 butterfly in 47.68.

McMahon’s teammate Sebastian Wolff was also a double winner, taking the 200 IM in 1:47.42 and the 100 breaststroke in 54.91.

Arapahoe’s Fletcher Hayes won two events. He was first in 500 yard freestyle 4:32.62 and won the 200 freestyle in 1:38.36.

The other two state records came in when diver Quinn Henninger of Regis Jesuit racked up 642.80 points to surpass the old record by over 30 points. Columbine’s 400 yard freestyle relay team of Hunter Foehner, Eric Hart, Henry Mueller and Chase Mueller won with a record time of 3:00.37.

Mountain Vista, Ponderosa capture baseball titles Valor delivers pitching gem, Ponderosa shows hitting prowess

Mountain Vista and Ponderosa claimed state baseball championships in different ways.

The Golden Eagles used strong pitching performances and smart base running to edge Valor Christian, 3-2, in the Class 5A championship game while Ponderosa just pounded out an 11-2 win over Holy Family in the 4A title contest.

Visa rode the pitching performances of senior starter Evan Ma gill and senior reliever Griffin Hart in the conquest over Valor Christian in the June 25 5A final game at Kelli McGuire Field at All-Star Park in Lakewood.

In semifinal games earlier in the day, the Golden Eagles (17-2) held on to down Fairview 6-4 while Valor Christian (18-5) advanced to the title game with a 10-1 romp over Fort Collins.

It was the second state title in three seasons for Vista who won the school’s first crown in 2018.

“The first one was special because it was the first one for Vista,” said Vista coach Ron Quinton. “This one was special because of the boys. This is a close group. This was a different special because a lot of people counted these guys out.”

Both Vista and Valor each got four hits during the game but Ma gill dominated with his curve ball for six innings and Hart saved the victory with a one-two-three seventh inning.

Both Ma gill and Hart were freshman on the 2018 state title team.

“The curve ball was on, the fast ball was on, the slider was on and I didn’t throw a change up,” said Ma gill. “It was a good day. We won state. We worked all season for it.”

Valor took the lead in the top of the first on Blake Wilson’s two run double but Vista came back with a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by Tyler Meija who was 2-for-2 and hit by a pitch in the game.

Travis Sprinkle opened the bottom second inning with a infield hit and Trey Dunn walked. After three wild pitches which advanced the runners, both scored and the Golden Eagles grabbed a 3-2 advantage with just an infield hit during the frame.

Magill allowed four hits and struck out nine batters in six innings of work. Valor had a man on third base with one out after an error and wild catch in the sixth inning but Magill got a strike out and rightfielder Sean Marlow made a diving catch on a fly ball to retire the side.

“You’ve got to get the outs with one out,” said Magill. “I was happy to get the strikeout. I was thinking curve balls, curve balls,

Quintana said Marlow was following orders.

“The second baseman probably should have caught it because he was underneath it but my one rule is catch the ball,” he added.

“I don’t care how you catch it but catch it.”

The Mustangs scored five runs in the sixth inning to seal the title victory over Holy Family and finish the season with a 21-3 record.

Starting pitcher Derek Lukes scattered four hits to Holy Family in seven innings while Skyler Ahern and Dylan Carey each had three hits and combined for three RBIs to spark the Pondo offense.

EDUCATIONAL ADVANCEMENT Hedrick headed to Oklahoma Ethan Hedrick is a graduate of Highlands Ranch High School. He plans to attend The University of Oklahoma and will pursue a degree in business with a focus on finance or venture capital management.

Hedrick was a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America Hedrick and the Philanthropy Club in high school. In addition, he served as Chapter President for the DECA program, enabling him to not only lead activities and fundraisers, but also compete in DECA events at the district, state and national levels. He was an avid athlete participating on the high school Varsity Tennis and Lacrosse teams.

Outside of school, he was involved with the Children’s Ministry at his church. Ethan is the son of Micah and Kristen Hedrick, senior client liaison at Insperity.
