pring is a time for growth and all things anew. Here at MTM, it’s that and more. This is our first issue with MTM’s new publishers, Nic and Hayley Mattson. Don’t worry: We’re still bringing the people of our community into your homes every quarter; we’re still highlighting the resources for making your homes the sanctuaries they deserve to be; and we’re still making introductions to our wonderful advertisers.

In this spring magazine, stories include meeting some of the talented artists around town (hint, there’s no shortage of creativity). And for those of us who remember comedian Tim Conway, his daughter, Kelly, shares insight into growing up with him via her new memoir. And, we also love highlighting our locals in the feature photo essay—where they tell us what they are looking forward to this spring in Malibu.

Jennifer Naylor I love Malibu in the spring, when the crowds are still at bay and the weather is crisp and warm and beautiful. It’s the perfect time for a beach picnic to enjoy seaside with friends and family. One of my family’s favorite things is having a good old fashioned clam bake. We usually follow it up with a long beach walk, catching up and collecting beach glass along the way.

There’s nothing more refreshing to me than surfing during sunset in the springtime. Just a couple waves as the sun goes down— that’s all I need for a complete reset. Malibu is more than just riding the waves: it’s taking in the serene, natural beauty of this special environment we get to call home and remaining grateful for it all. It’s also hard to argue about the best place to watch the sun melt over the horizon and light up the clouds like cotton candy in the sky.

Malibu spring to me is gray whales and their Northern migration.

These beautiful, graceful, majestic giants are on their return trip to the Arctic. They travel in groups with their calves and young whales. I like to watch from the shore … bring a cup of tea … and wait … patience is key… it’s absolutely thrilling every time I see that first spout or spray of one of the whales … then several minutes later, the iconic whale tail rising and gracefully slipping back into the ocean. They are magical creatures that keep the child-like awe and wonder in life for me!

Sunday Mornings in Malibu The Farmers Market Still Stands Strong

On a windy afternoon in November 2018, the Woolsey fire broke out, and no one was aware of the devastation it would inflict upon many of our lives. The fire spread rapidly, and was quickly out-of-control, fueled by terrible weather conditions. In the blink of an eye, our Malibu community was left threatened and devastated.

This horrific fire changed the course of Malibu’s history; so many lost their homes, local businesses suffered, and vendors lost their livelihoods.

The smoke and ash lingered in the air for weeks, serving as a reminder of all that our community lost. Within weeks of the fires, torrential rains resulted in erosion and dangerous conditions. Once a sign of nature’s beauty and glory, the Malibu cliffs became a threat to the lives of those remaining. Rocks and other debris fell, causing mudslides, roadblocks and damaging property.

ain or shine, the Malibu Farmers Market, which has served the community since 2000, is open every Sunday, year-round, from 9 AM to 2 PM—but we’ve faced many challenges.

The Malibu Farmers Market remains standing and stronger than ever. Our commitment to serving our community has never wavered; we have adapted, changed and grown, but we stand tall as a beacon of hope during these turbulent times every Sunday. We are ready and committed to giving our Malibu community a place to restock, refresh, rebuild and reflect. ▪

Then in early 2021, COVID-19 brought the entire world to a halting stop and disrupted our way of life as we know it. When the pandemic hit, all other farmers markets in California were closed. People were unsure of how to navigate our new world of safety regulations, yet the Malibu Farmers Market overcame these obstacles, adopting safety mandates and was still standing.

The Market immediately implemented protocols including handwashing stations, social distance markers, disposable gloves and more. TMZ, the Los Angeles County Health Department, and many other figures lauded The Malibu Farmers Market for “Getting Social Distancing Right.”

When people least expected it on a Sunday morning, farmers, bakers, florists and artisans drove in and pitched their white tents despite the smoke and ash surrounding them. They sacrificed their time and energy, and risked their lives to come and support our community in its time of need, ready to help people feel some sense of normalcy. The Market gave Malibu an avenue to reunite, replenish and revitalize their souls.

Beautiful SkiN Consider skincare as self-care

I

n order to have beautiful skin, we have to make sure we are taking care of it.

“Skincare is like going to the gym,” Kat James of Malibu Shine said. “Basically, you can go to the gym and spend one hour with a trainer—but it won’t keep you in shape. For whatever else you do [at a med-spa], it’s what you do at home that has the biggest impact.”

At-home skincare can be as easy as a few minutes a day.

“People will say three to five steps is too many,” James said. “But those steps can be done in as little as 15 minutes.”

Her biggest tip: Exfoliate! Without exfoliation, skin ends up dull, and dead skin can’t utilize even those most expensive product.

“Exfoliate two times a week,” she said. “The basic cell cycle is 26-28 days. Skin is meant to be sloughed off to be radiant and plump. You want fresh skin to absorb fresh product.”

As James noted: Cleopatra took milk baths to exfoliate. (Milk is high in lactic acid, a natural exfoliant.) Meaning, the Egyptian queen knew the secret to beautiful skin.

James’ other best tips? Remove make-up / wash face with a cleanser; use eye cream, a serum, lotion and a neck cream.

“Consider this self-care,” James noted. “It’s a mindset to take care of yourself and your skin.”

James has fallen into the mission of educating people on skincare and self-care. Her TikTok following is growing by the day, up to almost 332,000 followers at the time of this MTM story.

And, it all started when she found the social media platform by accident through her children. (She was using theirs, which they subsequently banned her from so she didn’t “ruin” their algorithm.)

With an 89% female following, between the ages of 35-75, this wide demographic demonstrates that no matter our age, we want to know the secrets of good skin … without the gimmicks.

“There will always be trends and gimmicks, so don’t jump on the bandwagon” James said. “But there are certain ingredients that will always be beneficial to all. Those include hyaluronic acid serums, and products that provide hydration.”

Skincare at the spa really falls into two categories: anti-aging and problematic. Some of the best tools for anti-aging include radio frequency and microneedling. They fall into the “medium cost” range James said, but said there is a huge ROI for the skin. For problematic skin, look for microdermabrasion and deep cleansing treatments at the spa.

Not only is skincare a huge beauty focus for 2022—but so is makeup and color. Which means there is room for lots of fun.

“I think it started with the show ‘Euphoria’ and the very futuristic makeup look,” James noted. “It really opened up looks we haven’t seen since the 80s and 90s.”

She noted that trends have been nude and naturals for so many previous seasons but now we’re shifting color to the mainstream—especially on the eyes. It was most prevalent with the idea of masks only exposing the top

quadrant of the face, but even with mandates changing, the idea of color isn’t.

“Think sparkle, high shine, eye gloss, lashes and different placement of shadows,” she said.

James has spent her career in the beauty industry and has worked with and for Estee Lauder, Chanel, Kiehl’s, Bergdorf Goodman and Dr. Brandt in various roles including account executive, product developer, trainer and buyer. She also has consulted for several prominent plastic surgeons.

When it came time to migrate to the West Coast for family, after spending years in New York, she knew Malibu was going to be home after she saw kids riding bikes and ice cream trucks when driving through town. She then combined her beauty smarts with community and opened Malibu Shine. Now,

with a social media presence, women all over are benefitting from her years of knowledge—from the most complex to the simplest of concepts.

“I did a TikTok on how to put on foundation after a request in the comments,” James said. “I would have thought that was so basic, but I can’t believe how much there is to share.”

There’s so much to communicate she said because trends change, no question is too minor, and a person’s skin is not the same every day. She recommends trying options and learning your skin.

to overall aesthetics. Think of it as if cosmetic dentistry is like painting a house. We all want our houses to have a great paint job. But what if the house is off its foundation and it is tipping to one side, or the doors and windows are not set right.

Assessing the entire house should be the domain of a larger group of dentists, but, unfortunately, it is not being taught. We get caught looking only at the paint.

In my practice, when I see children, my first focus is to look at the facial structure, the proportions of the face and development of the jaws. Then, it is to notice if the child breathes through the mouth or nose. Then I need to assess the child’s airway: Is there upper airway blockage?

If so, could it be from a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, or allergies.

This data is key because if a child is chronically breathing through the mouth due to airway blockage, this will dramatically affect the way the face develops.

The problem, I feel, is that as dentists, we are trained to look at someone’s bite (the way their jaws come together) and treat it as something sacred and inviolate—a genetically programmed position. It is not. The bite is, perhaps more than any other part of the body, remarkably impacted by environmental and developmental factors (mouth breathing, thumb sucking, allergies, etc.).

Sleep apnea goes 80% undiagnosed by the medical community. Virtually everyone should be getting screened for sleep apnea by their medical doctor.

I

n a fast world, Cin Short’s Laughing Dog Art Studio “slows down, collaborates, recycles and creates art with the stories that connect us.”

Short, a versatile artist, works in many different mediums.

“My mediums vary from paint [for commissioned pet portraits], to upcycled clothing art [for the planet and for fun], to a vintage VW bus [for a place people can gather to connect], to scrap wood from Woolsey rebuilds, to my body and a long history with performance-based works and choreography,” she said.

The artist described her art as the product of her “infinite curiosity in the stories we humans create about everything and trying to find ways to tell those stories.”

One of her storytelling modes includes painting pet portraits.

“Our pets teach us to love with more honesty,” Short said. “Through their ‘creatureness,’ we become better humans. Using paint for these portraits requires me to slow down and stay with the stories much longer than simply taking a photograph would. It is more about my attempt at capturing a sense of the story and bond between the person and their pet than about mastery of the medium.”

y using recycled apparel, Gena Lee breathes new life into clothing once tossed aside as useless so that it may be reborn and respected once again.

“I am aware of the harmful effects of the overproduction of apparel and textiles and its effects on the environment,” Lee said. “I love to go treasure hunting at thrift stores, and it occurred to me that maybe I could prevent waste in a small, fun and creative way.”

Stopping clothing from going to the landfill led to her artisty for One Of One creations. Lee scouts out feel-good graphics on old, discarded T-shirts that make her smile. She then washes, cuts, sews and embroiders them onto other recycled cashmere, denim, blazers or flannel. The result is ideally a product that has a nostalgic vibe.

The pandemic allowed her time to focus on the details of each handsewn piece without the rush to mass produce to meet the demands of stores and customers. Once done, Lee sells her creations at the Malibu Farmers Market every Sunday.

“I get to see so many people stop and get such a thrill taking in the variety of old classic movie phrases, genre rock bands, commercials and more,” the artist said. “It tickles my heart to see the smiles of happy buyers and hear all the stories behind why a design connects with them personally. This in turn, inspires me to keep creating.”

“I think something that has stuck with me the most was seeing the dedication people put into protecting and aiding the community both during and after the Wolsey fire,” the artist said. “I thought that was pretty inspiring.”

Bates draws his artistic inspiration from nearby beaches.

His modern expressions of surf themed pieces, a combination of acrylic paint and epoxy resin, pull from the vibrant colors of the Malibu landscape. It is a style that came from years of experimenting with different materials and techniques.

“I think subconsciously, I took aspects of my life and imagination that I’ve enjoyed and tried to integrate them into my work while having fun and not taking myself too seriously,” Bates said. “The mood of it may be mindless, in a positive way, and spontaneous.”

When not creating art, Bates can be found taking classes online for school. He’s stayed busy between adjusting to online learning and experimenting with new forms of art like printmaking.

And his motivation for creation remains unchanged.

“When I create, it’s usually because I have the strong urge to make something,” he said. “That being said, I hope people are able to feel some sort of emotion when they view my art.”

During his creative process, he said he will often ponder over an idea for a long time and will wait until he has “everything figured out” in his head. But then there are the times when an idea hits him randomly and from there it’s trial and error to find the image.

ith art that is best described as Contemporary Coastal, Carla Marlenée Bates paints in appreciation of the nature surrounding her. After living in Malibu for more than three decades, it makes sense that her art is an ode to the area. The primary goal of her subject matter is to evoke life affirming thoughts and emotions in the viewer.

“When an idea for a painting comes to me, I will spend time thinking about the best way to convey the energy in that moment,” Marlenée Bates said. “For instance, I am entranced by the silhouette of palm trees against the sky. But what I see is more than just the graphic effect of the shapes, I also observe the light igniting the sky and saturating the trees with glowing color. My palm tree paintings are an ode to Southern California, and I want to paint them with the same energy and excitement they evoke for me.”

By using acrylic paints as a medium, Marlenée Bates translates

palm trees and other favorite subjects like surfers immersed in the grandeur of the Pacific Coast. Her biggest inspiration is the Pacific Ocean, which she considers a playground that provides endless inspiration.

“My style reflects who I am, grounded in reality but faithful to idealism,” she explained.

Marlenée Bates is not only grounded, but extremely grateful for her life in Malibu.

“We have been so fortunate to raise our children here,” she said.

“Not only is Malibu stunningly beautiful, but it has somehow maintained a small-town feeling. I feel very connected to our community.”

elf-taught action art painter Jayne Cooper feels that art has saved her life many times over. While she never went to art school, she began drawing at a very young age. Though her career path began as a stylist, Cooper embraced her calling as a painter and now works with a wide variety of mediums from oil, acrylic, pencils, tempered paint, markers and Indian Ink.

“I crank up the music in my studio, and then start out with markers and mark the whole canvas and then take off,” she said. “I just go with it. I’ll change it, mess it up, destroy it and work the canvas really hard.”

Her art is ever-present in her mind in both waking and non-waking hours. Cooper explained that sometimes she wakes up in the middle of the night to draw, and then forgets that she did it.

“Then it’s a surprise in the morning,” she said with a laugh.

“I’m very attracted to Ancient Egypt and engravings on cave walls,” Cooper said, “And I try to recreate that look in my art.”

Our wedding was the happiest day of our lives. COVID-19 had taken a lot away from us and we were just thankful to have a chance to reunite with our closest friends and family in person. ~ Andy Ho

ven though many things are different as a result of COVID-19, one thing that has not changed is the power of love and its importance in everyone’s lives. From wedding nuptials to welcoming new babies into the world, people have continued to celebrate love.

Wedding Bells

Andy and Kimberly Ho met at a wedding in 2016 and had their first date in Malibu, where they hiked around Point Dume before having lunch at Malibu Seafood. Five years later, they celebrated their nuptials on July 4, 2021 at Calamigos Ranch in a beautiful ceremony with 130 family members and close friends.

“We loved the open-air space and outdoor nature aspects of [Calamigos], especially the Oaks Room,” he said. “We were in awe the moment we saw it with the waterfall in the background of the ceremony site. Everything was all in one place for people to celebrate.

The couple wanted the vibe of their wedding to be welcoming, down-to-earth and heartwarming, as well as for their guests

to have fun. They made sure to incorporate various aspects of themselves and their relationship into the wedding details.

“My niece and nephews walked our 14-year-old dog Mochi down the aisle, Andrew’s cousin was our officiant, and his sister performed a song she wrote about our love story (‘A holottalove’s got me feeling this way’),” Kimberly said.

“Our hashtag was #holottalove,” she continued. “We also love eating ramen, so we had an instant noodle bar, which was a great hit as the night went on and people enjoyed more drinks. Every song on the playlists for the ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner reception were handpicked by us to make sure the vibe we wanted was there.”

Andy added, “Kimberly has a huge sweet tooth, so dessert had to be the best. We brought in mochi donuts from Friendly Donuts, and also had our friend, Jackie, who owns Sugar Salt and Crumbs, custom design our wedding cake, which was a honey lavender cake with earl grey buttercream and midnight dark chocolate cake with matcha green tea buttercream.”

The two spent their honeymoon on a road trip to Montana, stopping in various ski resort towns along the way. They stopped in Las Vegas for a night and also enjoyed time at Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, Twin Falls and the Mendocino Coast, among others.

Since the wedding, they said that a lot of guests have shared how fond a memory it was to be able to celebrate and see people face to face after everything that has happened in the past year and a half.

Originally, the couple had planned to get married on October 31, 2020, but had to delay their wedding due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

“Our wedding was the happiest day of our lives,” Andy said. “COVID-19 had taken a lot away from us and we were just thankful to have a chance to reunite with our closest friends and family in person.

It was everyone’s first large gathering since the pandemic started, which made it all the more special for our wedding to be the reason for everyone’s first reunion.

Montana Coady and Benjamin Randall welcomed their first child into the world on May 25, 2021. The couple, set up by Ben’s mom, went on their first date back in January 2020 at Hotel Bel-Air.

Montana, a Malibu native, and Ben, a Pepperdine graduate, immediately hit it off, and, despite the fact he was living in New York City at the time while she was in Los Angeles, they decided to give long distance dating a try. The couple grew more serious, and when Montana was in New York for a photoshoot for work, Ben flew back to California with her in March 2020, right before the pandemic hit.

But this is all in the midst of a pandemic. Therefore, the two isolated themselves while Montana was pregnant to take all the precautions against COVID-19.

“At times it was a little tough and isolating,” she said, “but we had each other which was nice, and then when we had our son, things started to relax a bit more in the summer.”

“He never went back,” Montana said. “Everything was on lockdown, so he had planned to stay temporarily until things calmed down, but it kept getting postponed and finally he decided to get rid of his place in New York and live out here full time.

We ended up moving in together and decided to start a family.”

since her son was born. Ironically, she runs a fine jewelry house, specializing in bespoke creations—with no shortage of love connections.

“Our whole business is centered around love,” Montana said. “It’s been very interesting because people are still getting engaged and married during the pandemic.”

The couple named their son Coady James—his first name is his mom’s last name and James is Ben’s father’s name, as well as Ben’s middle name.

She is also an avid animal lover and a nationally ranked equestrian who has introduced her son to her horse as well as the family dog that competes in dog shows.

“The silver lining with COVID-19 has been that we’ve been able to really focus on Coady and spending time at home with him, doing things together as a family unit,” Montana said. “We want to protect him as much as we can and be really close to him.”

“I was born and raised in Malibu, and grew up horseback riding,” Montana said. “My mom was also an equestrian and I’ve had ponies since the day I was born. It’s a really amazing connection, and a really challenging and fulfilling sport.”

Montana has been exclusively running her business from home

Montana said that when her son gets a little older, she looks forward to getting him on a pony, but she plans to leave the decision up to him as to whether he ultimately wants to follow

in her footsteps and ride competitively or enjoy it more as a hobby.

“He met my horse, Ranger, who is almost 10 and retired,” Coady said. “My son loves him. He also loves our dog, Miss Moneypenny.”

Montana and Ben recently entered the world of show dog competitions, and their one-yearold Russell Terrier has already become a winner at the Kennel Club of Palm Springs.

“Ben and I are doing this together as new dog show parents,” she said. “It’s a whole different world filled with people who are so passionate about their dogs. Ben and I both love animals and it’s so much fun to go and see these beautiful dogs and how much joy they bring to their owners. It’s been a really fun thing to do together as a family.

“We’re so happy with our son, and Ben,” she said, “and I look forward to ultimately getting married and having more kids.” ▪

Handle choice on the doors is another important detail for wine cellars and storage, and Aronson said that most of the time a slightly longer handle between 18 to 24 inches tends to look better than 10- to 12-inch handles.

Kelly Conway remembers stories about her dad, comedian Tim Conway

What was even funnier than making his audience laugh, was when comedian Tim Conway would make those around him laugh and break character. His daughter, longtime Malibu resident Kelly Conway, wrote a memoir to share some of the stories, and then, at his death, some of her heartbreak.

But Tim also was a man who taught his children the basics of living a life with integrity – if you want money to go spend with your friends for a day at the beach, you should make up a bunch of sandwiches and sell them to hungry beachgoers. If you eat all of grandma Magi’s cookies while on vacation, you have to eat healthy when you return. And don’t expect re-entry to a movie theater if you don’t keep your ticket stub with you—even if that movie theater was set up by your dad in your own living room, complete with popcorn and a broom-handle turnstile leading into the makeshift theater seats.

“He taught me many life lessons. He didn’t always take the immediate gratification route,” she said. “He took the high road.”

He would tell his children that “you can’t make people like you.”

And if something didn’t work out, not to worry because that meant “something better was coming along.” And that there is never a need to do anything crazy, “things will work out.” He taught his children to always be kind to everyone “because you never know what kind of day someone else has had.”

loving. But when Tim became ill, Kelly was kept from seeing her dad. And the heartbreaking turn at the end of her beloved father’s life, Kelly found herself in the same unbearable situation suffered by the children of other Hollywood legends like Casey Kasem and Mickey Rooney.

Kelly was barred from seeing him by his then-wife and caregiver.

She endured a vicious court battle for conservatorship of her father’s interests, one that ended in a tenuous mediated agreement with her stepmother that satisfied no one and left Kelly feeling helpless as her father declined. She learned about her dad’s 2019 death in a text from a friend.

“It didn’t have to be this way,” Conway said with a sigh as she talked about the stories in her book and the dichotomy of her early life versus the broken family dynamic at the end of her father’s life.

And he told his children to “always be prepared.”

“We’d go to a movie and Dad would insist on sitting in the second or third back row,” Kelly said. “He said it was because if there was a fire or earthquake, we’d be first out the door.”

The comedian once asked his daughter to find him some wirecutters to hide in his costume on set one day when he was rigged to wires carrying him through the air for a sketch, figuring that if there was an emergency, everyone would scurry from the soundstage and he would have no way to escape himself.

The drama tore her family apart and left her an advocate for legislation that would prevent future families from suffering similar circumstances.

She has since made peace with the experience. She said her dad always took the high road. She wants to be like him.

“Dad always taught us to be prepared,” Conway, who eventually became a costume designer and wardrobe stylist for television and music videos, said with a laugh.

“He was so loved,” Kelly said. “He was my best pal in the world.

I just loved him. We grew up in the Valley, which was like living in the country back then. He just had a fun job and we got to have fun with him.”

But nothing prepared Kelly for the battle that would erupt with her stepmother when her father’s health declined. Kelly’s relationship with Charlene Conway had always been friendly and

A Club for Zen Running Club— the first vegan sneakers made from plants!

hen Zen Running Club first reached out to me in November 2021 with a request to become part of the Malibu Farmers Market, which I have organized over the past 24 years, I didn’t know if they would be a good fit since the market is all about the freshest produce. However, I was instantly intrigued when I learned that this new brand from Europe is making the first plant-based, vegan sneakers.

What I learned took my breath away, because our motto has always been: The future of our planet is not by chance, but by choice. That’s why this partnership is the perfect fit.

Please let me introduce one of the founders, Dominic Sinnott, who aims to revolutionize the sneaker industry for the better.

DEB: I was very excited when you requested to soft launch your new brand at the Malibu Farmers Market last year. Please tell me why you thought this was a good idea.

DOMINIC: We were equally excited at the opportunity to present a running shoe in such a unique setting as the Malibu Farmers Market.

All our products, including our ZR 01 shoes are plant based. We’d heard from our friends in the canyon about this amazing market— with the best range of fresh organic produce, where you’d always bump into neighbors and friends—a real Malibu institution.

The shared idea of good living, sustainability, and community resonated with us. We learned that getting a spot at the market was no easy feat, but thankfully your support has been amazing.

So, as strange as it might seem, being among the green and organic produce at the Malibu Farmers Market was a perfect fit for our story!

DEB: What is the idea behind Zen Running Club?

DOMINIC: Zen Running Club is a place to breathe, to enjoy running, to look good, and to rest easy about your impact on the planet.

In Malibu, there are runners and non-runners, all with a healthy mindset that encompasses sustainability, with a real world view on innovation and style. They are first in on new ideas and express a real joy in being a part of “what’s coming next.” Within the running lifestyle, there is a positive, progressive approach that we wish to fulfill.

DEB: How was this idea born?

DOMINIC: COVID and lockdown offered many of us a space to think differently. I had the chance to sit down with friends from the running shoe industry to debate the question: “If the biggest brands were starting out today, what would they do differently?” The short answer—a focus on sustainability and community.

Everyone The sportswear and fashion industry has a huge problem with sustainability and plastic waste, and we wanted to be a part of a solution and cultural change.

We wanted to produce an innovative performance running shoe made from plant-based materials, and to be better than competitors. From this idea of doing things in a responsible and considerate way, came our mantra ‘Made from good decisions.’ The name Zen Running Club encapsulates our idea of the mindfulness and community we want to bring to both the product and the act of running.

Everybody is welcome in our club.

Zen Running Club seemed the next logical step to take in my career that integrates running shoes, fashion and design, both in-house and with my creative agency. My co-founders, Richard and Andy, together with our brand director, Nina, bring a wealth of overlapping knowledge and skills, and share that same passion for design, innovation, creativity, culture, sustainability and, of course, running. We all have our own reasons to run, but for me, it’s finding that magic flow and speed that transcends or inspires everything else in my day.

DEB: Why did you choose these natural ingredients: eucalyptus, sugarcane and cotton for shoes?

DOMINIC: Our mission is to create vegan approved running products that prioritize sustainable, plant-based materials. For those small details where plant tech can’t yet provide the answer, we seek out the best recycled and sustainable alternatives.

The shoe’s one-piece sock-fit upper is constructed from eucalyptus tree fibers, specifically positioned for comfort, support and breathability. Sugarcane-based foam is used to engineer our ‘rocker’ design midsole, to cushion and glide you into your next stride. The outsole, made from FSC-certified natural rubber, keeps you moving with the right blend of durability, grip and rolling motion. Our signature pop-colored pull tabs are 100% organic cotton and cut to length with nothing wasted. Rainwater-fed, these materials give us a carbon negative start to the process of building the ZR 01 running shoe. By listening and learning, we move even closer to our goal of 100% plant-based products that leave nothing behind.

DEB: Your brand is based in The Netherlands and Berlin. What are your plans to come back to LA and Malibu this year?

DOMINIC: We’re busy working on new products and stories from our bases in Amsterdam and Berlin, but we’re super excited to be returning to LA and Malibu in the spring. Another day at the Malibu Farmers Market is a must—this time engaging with the local running community. Having supported the Malibu Half Marathon in a small way in 2021, we’re excited to grow our involvement this year.

It’s also a great honor for us to be given the opportunity to be working with the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu. In LA, we’ll be running with some crews, presenting a pop-up store downtown, and hosting a VIP Vegan Dinner Night. It seems the more we do here, the more friends we make and the more we feel at home. ▪

Local rescue organizations and activists are dedicated to animal welfare

ll animals deserve to live a good life and it is our responsibility to help protect other living things, especially those without a voice or the ability to defend themselves against harm.

Many of these local animal activists are right here in our neighborhoods; they are dedicating their time and resources to help make the world a safer and better place for our four-legged friends.

VOICE FOR ANIMALS AND THE PLANET: KATIE CLEARY In 2012, model, actress and filmmaker Katie Cleary founded Peace 4 Animals, an animal welfare foundation that rescues, rehabilitates and finds homes for domestic animals, as well as provides education and fosters a co-existence with wild and protects endangered species.

4 Animals also focuses on big cat conservation, rhino and elephant rescue in Asia and Africa, in addition to working on a legislative, state and federal level to help to help save wolves.

“My mom loved big cats and we rescued animals when I was growing up,” Cleary said. “There are only a few thousand tigers left in the wild because they get hunted for their parts, so we work to raise awareness to help protect and preserve them.”

Cleary grew up in the entertainment industry and began modeling and acting at a young age, which is also when she started rescuing animals.

“I always knew I’d merge the two,” Cleary said. “My background in the entertainment industry has helped a lot with my animal rescue work.”

In the past, she’s partnered with Eastwood Ranch Foundation when they hosted Cleary’s first charity event. Cleary has also partnered with Angels 4 Animals.

“We all want to use our platforms to bring animal welfare to the forefront and save as many animals as we can,” she said.

Cleary’s activism has made a difference on a state level when her foundation helped pass the anti-puppy mill bill. On a larger scale, she is also reintroducing an anti-deforestation bill to help protect orangutan’s habitat from being destroyed. And their campaign,

Lead the Pack for Wolves, is also part of a coalition called Relist Wolves, which is fighting to save wolves and put them back on the endangered species list.

“Wolves are under attack in multiple states including Idaho, Montana and Wyoming,” Cleary said. “It’s heartbreaking that this is happening.”

Cleary also started World Animal News (WAN), a network that publishes daily breaking news about various animal issues. The media outlet covers everything from wild and domestic animals to threatened and endangered species, as well as the plight of farm animals. WAN shares informative and educational articles about critical issues including animal welfare and protection, legislation and factory-farming, among others.

“We recently highlighted that South Korea is looking to ban bear bile farming, which is a big topic,” Cleary said. “We publish two to three articles every day that are breaking news around the world. We also do World News Highlights twice a month.

My goal is to get WAN on a major platform and have it be the first-ever mainstream animal environmental news show. I’m sick of human news and I want to hear more about what’s going on with our earth and the animals.”

Cleary’s first documentary, “Give Me Shelter,” was completed in 2015 and sold to Netflix, where it aired for two years. The documentary was the recipient of several awards including Best Doc Short from the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood, as well as an Official Selection from the JamFest Film Fest.

“It’s highly focused on the importance of rescue and going to the shelter to adopt, not shop,” Cleary said. “That’s the first half of the film, then the second half focuses on wildlife issues and trafficking.”

Cleary is hard at work on Peace 4 Animals’ second project, a compelling new feature-length documentary called “Why on Earth,” which uncovers many issues affecting our natural world and the animals that inhabit it. It features Clint Eastwood, MaggieQ and many other animal advocates. Not only the writer, Cleary produced it and made her debut as a director.

“It’s currently making its rounds through the film festival circuit and we’ve already won quite a few awards,” Cleary said.

Her dream is to start a rescue rehab and sanctuary for endangered species and injured big cats somewhere in Africa in the future.

“This is such a critical issue right now. I want these animals to be around when I have children, and the way it’s looking right now, that may not be the case, sadly.”

For those who want to help animals and get more involved with animal welfare, Cleary recommends volunteering at a local wildlife rehab or shelter to help clean cages, walk dogs and socialize the animals. Globally, eco-tourism is another way to help by volunteering in Africa or Thailand at a rhino or elephant rescue. Or, you can start here in your own backyard, she said. Foster homes or even sharing on your social platforms about the animals in need of adoption helps.

“I love this work because it’s about trying to raise awareness and being able to save animals from extinction,” Cleary said. “The fact that we may lose elephants and rhinos from the face of this earth is a very serious issue based on our actions as well as our inactions.

I love all animals and this is the calling that I was given, I literally live and breathe this.”

COMMITTED COUPLE: ALISON EASTWOOD AND STACY POITRAS Throughout their lives, Alison Eastwood and husband Stacy Poitras have been avid animal lovers and advocates. Their shared lifelong passion for rescuing animals ultimately led to the creation of Eastwood Ranch Foundation, a local organization that rescues animals from high-kill shelters and is dedicated to increasing pet adoptions through fostering, campaigns, events, education, spay/ neuter programs and rescue partnerships.

“Years ago, when Alison asked me what I thought about starting an animal rescue I said,’ ‘Hell yeah, I would love to do that,’” Poitras shared. “We’re kindred spirits in that way.

“It worked out for us because since we decided not to have kids, this is a great thing to do to be foster parents, help the community and animals,” Eastwood said. “It was a no-brainer and I couldn’t do it without Stacy. He does just as much work, if not more, than I do. We’ve helped raise money for chimpanzees coming out of medical labs; we’ve done work with wild horse rescue; we try to do whatever we can; and want to be supportive to other great nonprofits.”

In addition to rescuing animals from high-kill shelters in California, Eastwood Ranch Foundation is a transport partner with the ASPCA, and they also work with Start Animal Rescue, which is based in Los Angeles and transports at-risk animals from high-kill shelters in California to rescue partners in the Pacific Northwest.

“We also work with Return to Freedom, which is a wonderful nonprofit wild horse conservation organization,” Eastwood said.

“We’ve also worked with Chimp Haven in Louisiana, who I absolutely love because they release chimpanzees from medical labs that have lived horrible lives. We also work with National Tiger Sanctuary, which provides a permanent home for exotic and domestic animals. We’ll continue to do whatever we can to be helpful and we’re happy to work with any good organizations and people.”

Fostering is another important aspect of their work, and Eastwood and Poitras are always fostering adoptable pets in their own home, in addition to having their own two dogs and four cats. They encourage others to foster animals whenever possible to help save more lives.

Eastwood acknowledged it is difficult when the couple gets attached, but “we cry tears of joy more often than sadness, and people who adopt the animals will often send us follow-up [notes].

“Ever since I was a little kid, I remember realizing that animals were at the mercy of human beings … I wanted to help the animals,” Poitras said. “When I was 6 years old, I saw a duck drowning in a lake and I saved it, brought it home and nursed it back to health before returning it to the lake.”

Eastwood added, “I grew up in a nature-filled environment … surrounded by different kinds of wildlife. I’ve always loved animals and wanted to take care of them and preserve nature.”

When the Eastwood Ranch Foundation started, they were a small rescue, but have grown over the years and contributed to a variety of animal causes and issues.

a German shepherd and they made Christmas ornaments with the dog’s face on them. It makes it worthwhile.”

The Eastwood Ranch Foundation is currently in the process of building a rescue facility and adoption center in Agoura Hills, which will provide community resources and a nurturing environment for rescuing; it is scheduled to open in spring 2023. More information for volunteering (walking dogs, playing with kittens) or offering donations is available on their website.

Other ways people can help animals in general is by spaying and neutering their pets, using their own social media accounts to spread the word about animals in need of adoption, as well as donating to local organizations.

“If you can’t give a monetary donation or aren’t capable of doing volunteer work, you can do other things like gather old towels, sheets and newspapers from neighbors or organize a local drive in your neighborhood to collect pet food and other resources,” Eastwood said. “There are always things you can do that are creative.”

And for those who are looking to adopt a new pet into their home, Eastwood and Poitras also offered some advice.

“I always say it takes three days for a new pet to even feel safe in their new environment, three weeks to start feeling like you can move forward with adoption, and three months for a pet to really feel integrated into the home,” Eastwood said.

Poitras added, “When we adopt a pet out to someone we always tell them to be patient. There’s something about that third day when you’re about to give up and then that dog or cat gets in your lap, looks at you and then you fall in love. It happens a lot.”

Eastwood Ranch Foundation is celebrating their 10th anniversary and Eastwood and Poitras look forward to continuing to save lives and helping more animals.

“Whenever we hear from people who have adopted an animal through us and tell us that they are so thankful … that’s the icing on the cake,” Eastwood said. “The work we do is often difficult and hard, but the love stories are one of the sweetest parts of it all.”

Poitras added, “Sometimes we’ll adopt an animal out and it will look back at us as it’s going to its new home and is basically saying ‘Thank you’ with its eyes.”

HELPING HOMELESS ANIMALS: AGOURA ANIMAL CARE CENTER The Agoura Animal Care Center has been operating since 1976 and provides care for all types of homeless animals that are in transition and waiting to be adopted into loving homes. They mostly take in dogs and cats, although there’s been occasional rabbits and even various types of snakes and lizards also available. They also sometimes have livestock animals such as horses, pigs, goats, sheep and chickens.

In addition to caring for homeless animals, they also provide animal control services for the cities of Malibu, Calabasas, Westlake Village, Hidden Hills, Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks and unincorporated parts of LA County, such as Topanga and Chatsworth.

“The Agoura Animal Care Center has a wonderful group of volunteers who come to the care center each day to help provide extra love and attention, and work with some of our special needs animals,” Denise Rosen, animal control manager for the Department of Animal Care and Control, Agoura Animal Care Center, said.

“We also have HHA (healthcare for homeless animals), formerly Malibu Pet Companions, which is a volunteer-run nonprofit that pays for extra medical care and surgeries. This helps to make our animals more adoptable.”

They also provide help on the streets. For example, if you’re out driving or walking and come across a loose animal, the best thing is to try to reunite the animal with the owner. However, if the animal appears to be injured or unapproachable, the best thing to do is to call Animal Control to have an officer respond.

Rosen also offered some advice for welcoming a new rescue into a new home.

“It takes time for any animal to adjust to its new surroundings and new people,” Rosen said. “Be patient and set the ground rules from day one and have a routine. The new dog or cat might be scared for the first few days before settling in. It could take up to two months for the new pet to build trust and establish a bond with their new family.”

Rosen added that there are numerous benefits that come with choosing to adopt an animal as opposed to purchasing one from a pet store or online. When purchasing a dog or puppy online, it might be supporting a puppy mill. M libu P ws Malibu Paws hosts its annual event on May 1 in partnership with Malibu Farmers Market

he Cornucopia Foundation has been dedicated to preserving and conserving the environment we live in, whether for humans, animals, or purely educational purposes, since 1998. We are advocates for giving back to our community, and one of the ways we do that is through the Malibu Farmers Market. The profits we earn from the Market on an ongoing basis allow us to provide funding for causes we stand for, such as animal rescue, wildlife, environmental outreach and education.

Every Spring, Malibu Farmers Market unites animal rescues in the area to bring animals, from puppies to seniors, all looking for a forever home. Our Foundation donates money to cover the costs of their attendance at our event, including their transport, animal handlers and accommodation fees.

The Malibu Paws Have a Cause annual event has been made possible in the past because of the generosity of community members. A long-standing member of the Malibu community, Irene-Dazzan Palmer, first moved to Malibu more than 20 years ago. An avid animal lover, Irene channeled her energy into action by partnering with the Malibu Farmers’ Market as a proud sponsor of the Malibu Paws Have a Cause annual event. With her sponsorship over the past two years, more than 21 rescue animals have been saved and brought into loving homes.

Postcrossings offers good old-fashioned pen pals

n a world of pandemics and distance, it’s no doubt that technology has helped friends and families stay connected. And, while the digital age has certainly sent many older forms of communication to their graves, could it also be a reason they survive?

Postcrossings makes a strong case for it. Blending web forums with an old-school pen pal approach, Postcrossings is an online platform offering a way for strangers around the world to send postcards to each other.

Gelbman, a food columnist for Malibu Times, began Postcrossings about a year ago, when the pandemic’s isolation and boredom began to take its toll. Looking for something “social” to do, she decided to investigate the idea of pen pals, like she had as a child. She found Postcrossings—which appealed because it’s about fun, easy postcards instead of lengthy letters.

“It’s just fun!” Gelbman said. ”It doesn’t take that much time or effort or energy. I probably like sending them more than I like receiving them because I know it’s going to make somebody happy.

And I’m sharing a little bit of myself with a stranger I’ll never meet or see (or maybe have contact with again).”

The process is easy: simply sign up for an account and create a short profile. When you’re ready to get mailing, choose the “send a postcard” button. From there, the website randomly assigns you the name and address of another person who has also signed up for the program. Once a recipient is assigned, you can view their online profile and tailor the postcard to the person. Add postage and a Continued on pg. 64

“Someone might suggest: ‘I’d like to exchange postcards of birds,’” she explained. “Addresses are sent, and then we make a postcard with a bird on it.”

Sometimes it’s a freestyle choice of medium, such as watercolor, stamps, markers or collage, while other times, it’s a very specific art style.

Although most postcard exchanges are through the specialty group or automation, there are some cases where true friendships are born. Gelbman herself has two people she writes on a more regular basis: Connie in Nebraska and Dean in Florida.

Once Connie realized her pen pal Gelbman wrote a food column, she sent a gift box with recipes her family loves.

“I was just amazed at how different our states are and what we eat,” Gelbman said.

A few exchanges later, she realized the climate in Nebraska meant Connie had never eaten pineapple guava.

“I have a tree with them, and I mailed her two dozen—I was so afraid she’d open a box of rotten fruit. It was the middle of summer,” Gelbman said.

Fortunately, they survived the journey and were greatly appreciated by Connie and her friends.

One of the most exciting parts, Gelbman said, is the ability to connect with people from so many different countries.

“I’ve sent postcards to Brazil, Portugal, Spain, India, Canada, the US, Belarus, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, England, and especially Germany and Russia. It’s all over the world—that’s what makes it so much fun!”

She experiences different cultures through correspondence.

“I know I’ll never go to half of these places,” Gelbman acknowledged. “But I can still experience the people and the culture by postcards. Sometimes people will send postcards in an envelope with a tea packet or a little candy. Some people like to exchange little gifts. It’s another way they share their culture and things important to them.”

Gelbman is part of a “handmade postcard” group created through the Postcrossing forum option. With a moderator at the helm, she and four other members exchange postcards they’ve made themselves according to the themes they decided upon with each exchange.

Dean, retired, ex-military and living with a service dog, is another person Gelbman writes to frequently.

“He’s really interesting, and he has really cool stamps! A lot of them seem very vintage,” she said.

Any given postcard with Dean, Connie, or another one-time exchange might include a few lines about the weather, the experience of the pandemic in their country, weekend activities, a recipe, animal antics, or maybe even a poem or short story.

“It’s a good way to just connect,” Gelbman said, “Our governments and cultures might be different but we’re all just the same. We all just want to connect with each other and know we’re not alone.” ▪
