Malibu Chamber Honors Trailblazing Women at 2024 Leadership Awards

The Malibu Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2024 Women’s Leadership Awards at Duke’s Restaurant in Malibu on March 21. This event celebrated local women excelling in the public and private sectors and philanthropy. Ani Dermenjian received the Lifetime Legacy Award at the Chamber’s 4th annual Women’s Leadership Awards. Dr. Deborah Crown, dean of Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, set the event’s tone with a keynote speech emphasizing the importance of leading with kindness. She highlighted that “female leadership is essential, and when women are respected and empowered to lead, everyone benefits.” Aaron T. Jones of International Protective Services, the presenting sponsor, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting the event, noting, “As the proud dad of three daughters, when the Chamber approached me to support this event, I was all in!”

The ceremony honored five women at various stages in their careers. Ingrid Steinberg, co-founder and board president of Resilient Palisades, received the Women in Philanthropy award for her environmental efforts. Chumash Day Teaches, Celebrates, and Inspires

The 24th annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering brought powerful storytelling and cultural celebration to Malibu Bluffs Park. Over two days, attendees experienced traditional music, singing, dancing, intricate clothing, tribal ceremonies, and prayer. Although named after the Chumash, the event included various tribes from across North America, celebrating their unique cultures and shared histories.

The dance circle, symbolizing Mother Earth, united tribesmen and women. Each tribe was honored by the Eagle staff, held by Ricky Two Bears. Social and celebratory dances highlighted different dance styles and clothing, bringing joy and unity. Chumash and Fernandeño Tataviam Elder Beverley Folkes, a participant in all 24 iterations of the powwow, cherishes reconnecting with friends and tribes each year. “It builds camaraderie among all tribes,” she said. “There’s no one tribe that feels superior; we’re all celebrated the same.”

Ba’ac Garcia, a Tohono O’odham nation member and professional fancy dancer, emphasized involving younger generations. “Powwows show younger generations that we are still here and that they can express their culture,” he noted. Despite the event’s success, some worry about preserving traditions among younger Native Americans. Mari Huehueicoyotl, an Aztec tribe member, has seen declining participation and hopes to engage younger generations. “The powwow offers a unique opportunity to explore diverse cultures and understand why these cultures must be preserved,” she said. Kiara Love Flores of the Kuupangaxwichem tribe highlighted the event’s role in educating and advocating for native peoples. “A hundred years ago, we would have been killed or arrested for gathering,” she said. “It’s important to support native peoples and continue traditions.”

Remembering and Honoring Matt Rapf

“Matt always loved the rain and going down to the ocean when it rained,” a tearful Jill Rapf said days after unexpectedly losing her husband and best friend, Matt Rapf, 61. He died of a heart attack on February 4 while paddling out at Zuma Beach in honor of Lyon Herron. Surrounded by his tribe, Matt transitioned in his favorite place—the ocean. On April 13, a dreary Malibu morning with rain impending, hundreds of friends and family gathered to honor Matt with a paddle out at First Point, where he grew up and made countless memories. “How can he be gone?” a devastated Jill posted, juxtaposing her words with an image of a smiling Matt in the ocean, embodying health and optimism.

“It was an epic paddle out in Matt’s honor,” Skylar Peak said. “He loved the rain piercing the ocean’s surface and our hills above beautiful Malibu.” Andy Lyon, Matt’s childhood friend, noted, “We lucked out with the weather, freeing up the whole beach for everyone to park.” Lyon recounted, “I was honored to take Matt’s ashes out on a big board with a wreath of leis. I took him on his last go out and around the circle so everyone could honor him. Jill spread his ashes, and it was beautiful.” Greg Beaton described the event’s energy as family and friends embraced within the circle of love, honor, and remembrance. After the paddle out, attendees proceeded to Malibu Gathering Church to further honor Matt, recalling his sense of humor, love of family, and community contributions. Pastor Brian Kelly reflected on Matt’s generosity and spiritual journey, highlighting a recent trip to the Dominican Republic for Mission of Hope.

Jill Rapf and Lyon noted that after the memorial, a double rainbow appeared, symbolizing joy amidst grief. Matt’s family and friends carry on, buoyed by his love and honoring his memory.

“Matt was a kind man—a family man,” Peak said. “Malibu is a better place because of him. Long live Matt Rapf!”

State and Local Partners Hold ‘Go Safely PCH’ Campaign

After the tragic deaths of four Pepperdine students last fall, the Malibu City Council declared a local emergency to address the dangers on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). In response, the community has seen increased traffic enforcement and infrastructure improvements.

In May, California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, alongside state and local leaders, launched the “Go Safely PCH” campaign at the Ghost Tire Memorial on Webb Way. The campaign commemorates lives lost on PCH since 2010 and aims to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The City of Malibu’s website emphasizes the commitment to ensuring safety on PCH. Omishakin highlighted the campaign as a collective effort to improve the corridor through infrastructure, enforcement, and driver responsibility. He stated, “One more life lost is one too many.”

With a $39 million investment in traffic safety projects and an additional $8 million, the city is dedicated to making PCH safer. State Senator Ben Allen and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Lindsey P. Horvath echoed the urgency for immediate action and coordination to address safety hazards on PCH. A new education campaign, “Life’s a Beach, Not a Race, Slow Down on PCH,” features billboards, signs, and social media alerts, urging drivers to slow down. The California Office of Traffic Safety encourages safe driving pledges to establish a road safety culture. Since January, the addition of three fulltime California Highway Patrol officers has resulted in over 1,200 citations for speeding. Caltrans is investing $4.2 million in safety upgrades, including lane separators and enhanced road striping.

Malibu Mayor Steve Uhring and Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock emphasized the need for continued efforts and partnerships to eliminate fatal crashes on PCH. For more information, visit GoSafelyPCH.org.

Malibu’s State of the City Brings Community Together

“We want to revive Malibu!” These words, spoken by Ian Roven, chairperson of the Malibu-Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce, set the tone for this year’s State of the City address. Held on May 10 at Santa Monica College Malibu campus, the event brought the community together to reflect on Malibu’s health and status. Dignitaries provided updates on initiatives benefiting Malibu schools, safety, and small businesses, which Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin described as “the backbone of the county.” Irwin also addressed the rising fire insurance costs and the issue of homeowners losing coverage, noting that Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is working on reforms.

Sheriff’s Capt. Jennifer Seetoo updated the audience on law enforcement, receiving accolades for her dedication. Malibu Mayor Steve Uhring and City Manager Steve McClary thanked city staff for their hard work and the community for their resilience. Uhring reported strong city finances, with property tax reserves exceeding $60 million. He emphasized the importance of this financial stability for disaster response and highlighted investments in the California Highway Patrol and Malibu PTAs.

Reflecting on the past year, Uhring mentioned the tragic deaths of four Pepperdine students and the ongoing issue of speeding on PCH. He discussed the slow progress of installing speed cameras but noted that highway safety is a priority for Sacramento. Uhring also highlighted fire safety efforts, including hazardous tree removal and the installation of beacon boxes for firefighters. He addressed illegal parking with new towing services and praised the Community Services Department’s programming, Public Works’ storm drain clearing, and the new online portal from the Planning Department. Uhring mentioned ongoing priorities like short-term rentals and school separation, ending with a call to preserve Malibu’s natural resources for future generations.

Loving Malibu

we asked the local surfers...

to share their favorite surf spots

Photographed and curated by

Lizzy and Steve Wright

Finding a friendly spot isn’t always easy when you’re a standup paddle (SUP) surfer. Discovering a break with a statue dedicated to this surfing variant? Forget about it. After traveling abroad for a year, we found there’s no place more welcoming than Latigo Point. While you’ll discover plenty of rocks inside and a few boulders to keep you sharp, once you have the topography committed to memory, it’s mostly long, smooth rides. Summers are hard to beat at this picturesque right-hand point break, and south swells at rising tide offer promise. For a great history of Latigo Canyon as you suit up on the sand, there’s a good chance you’ll be greeted by locals who’ve preserved the charm of this gem for generations.

Being a Malibu native has been an amazing experience. Surfrider Beach is also known as Humaliwo, which means ‘the surf sounds loudly.’ The Chumash, the original Malibu natives, called Surfrider home long before our time here in Malibu.

Malibu is one of the most iconic surf spots in the world. Its location and blend of old Hollywood with Malibu surf/art culture draws characters from all around the world to enjoy its near perfect right-hand point waves. There is something unique and special about really connecting with this wave on a huge south swell, usually during summertime and early fall. I am very appreciative to be able to call Malibu home.

Dale Rhodes

Westward Beach isn’t just a stretch of sand and surf to me; it’s my sanctuary and home! The connection runs very deep with me from the first time I surfed Westward in early 1981. From that moment on, it became my favorite spot to surf. By 1984, I found myself living with four other guys at the Malibu Gardens during my time on my junior college surf team. Those years were filled with dawn patrols and late-night parties at Trancas bar.

But my true bond with Westward Beach comes with the 40 years of surfing relationships I forged in and out of the water. It also holds a profound spiritual significance for me. When the time came to say goodbye to both of my parents, there was no better place to lay their ashes than at Westward rock...one day I’ll be joining them at the rock. I feel their presence every time I drive by looking for surf or on my drives in the golf cart watching the sunset with my girlfriend, Michelle. Westward Beach isn’t just where I surf; it’s where my heart resides.

Leila Anawalt

It’s rare to find a time or place that allows one to be fully present; for me, that is surfing in Point Dume. It’s one of my greatest sources of happiness. As soon as I get in the water, I find so much serenity in reading and becoming one with the ocean. My sole focus is on having a good time while coexisting with nature and those around me. Something about immersing myself in the ocean is extremely peaceful and puts all of my life troubles into perspective. It’s here where I feel like my best self. There are no words to describe the euphoric feeling of gliding on a wave in your favorite surf break.

My father taught me how to surf here, so being able to share this experience with him means everything to me—not to mention he always gives me waves. I’m so grateful to have grown up here for many reasons.

I know this surf spot like the back of my hand, and it feels so good to be attuned and aligned to Mother Nature in this way. It feels more like a privilege than anything. From familiar faces to friends who feel like family, I’m so fortunate to share this spot with people who make it even more special to me and make it the fun experience that it is.

It has been so pivotal in making me who I am today. Growing up surfing Point Dume, I’ve learned patience, humility, and perseverance. Over everything, my biggest takeaway and lesson is respect for others as well as myself, especially being a girl in a male-dominated sport. It’s crucial to conduct oneself with the utmost respect for the surfers around them, the seniority that comes with that, mother nature, and self-respect.

Spencer Regan

At the age of five, my family and I moved from the center of town to West Malibu, bought a Wavestorm from Costco, and made our way to Zuma Beach. My parents had no experience with the sport, so I was going in blind. With insight from lifeguards, friends, and neighbors, I learned technique and basic ocean safety. I was made aware of the rip currents, shallow waters, and creatures that swim beneath.

Where Zuma Beach gave me some of my worst injuries and greatest childhood memories, it first taught me the respect Mother Nature deserves and what that respect, in turn, provides to the soul. As I tumble underwater in directions unknown or as that stingray

pierces my pinky toe, the ocean, at times, makes me feel so small and insignificant. Other times, leaving a sense of invincibility from the mind, body, and spirit connection the ocean provides. Zuma is where I learned to embrace change as a constant factor in life. Like the ocean, life is not perfect and always changing.

This is where I fell in love with the ocean’s duality of beauty and danger, its ever-changing colors, textures, shapes, and sizes. This is where I taught myself to surf. Now, I teach surf at Zuma, sharing my love for this spot and this sport with people from all over the world. But, like life, that takes time, patience, and hard work. I have yet to master Zuma with all of its power and beauty, yet I come back every day to try.

Malibu Has Lost Maggie Luckerath

Known as 'Mama Bu,' she was a force of nature and a force for good in Malibu

Short in stature but long on kindness, Maggie Luckerath was a beloved member of the Malibu community. She passed away at 78 on April 5, surrounded by loved ones, after a brave battle with leukemia. Known as “Mama Bu,” Maggie was a force of nature and a force for good in Malibu. She coordinated weekly buffets at the summer concerts on Trancas lawn, always offering a warm, generous spirit. Wailani O’Herlihy recalled, “Maggie loved her ‘Bu’ community with all her heart. She was outspoken, but you always knew where she stood. Malibu loved her. She organized potluck dinners for the Vintage Summer Series, providing gourmet food.” Even when ill, Maggie’s selflessness shone through. “She quickly donated medical supplies for Lahaina, Maui, when the fire hit,” O’Herlihy added. “Maggie had a special Aloha for Malibu, and we’ll miss her dearly.”

Born Magadelina Anna Frey in Pennsylvania, Dutch Country, Maggie was the youngest of nine children of German immigrants Frederick and Anna Huber Frey. After losing her father in a tragic accident at age five, Maggie’s resilience and kindness were shaped by her early experiences. Her family remained close-knit, with her older brother Fred taking over the family farm, teaching Maggie frugality, common sense, and kindness. After high school, Maggie moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the federal government. She credited her farm girl roots for her strong work ethic. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel overseas, visiting family in Germany and landing a job at Chrysler in Geneva. It was in Geneva that Maggie met Hubert Luckerath, a successful German banker. They married and had two children. Later in life, Maggie and Hubert moved to Malibu, where Maggie became a beloved community figure. She enjoyed walking on the beach, chatting with locals, and creating a welcoming community.

“Maggie had a big, big heart,” said Pastor Erin Stenberg of Malibu Methodist Church. “She had a knack for pulling people together.” Maggie’s vibrant personality earned her the nickname “Live Wire” in high school, a fitting tribute to her energetic and empathetic nature.

Derek Schimming Remembered at Legacy Park

Danita Schimming fondly described her late husband Derek, saying, “His heart was so big and so full of love, and it came out in every single thing that he did. Whether it was helping kids with surf therapy or mentoring people in art, whatever he did, he did it big.” On May 19, Danita and her daughters Steele, Aubrey, and Tashina attended the Malibu Art Association Art Show at Legacy Park, showcasing Derek’s artwork alongside other artists.

Schimming, a Malibu resident, tragically passed away in a traffic collision near Paradise Cove and Winding Way. The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department confirmed he had a medical emergency before the crash, with an autopsy pending to determine the cause. Following the news, friends expressed their condolences on social media, describing Derek as a “unique, positive, passionate, kind, motivated, hardworking, and giving person.”

The Malibu Arts Association mourned his loss, stating, “We are deeply saddened to learn that our dear friend Derek Schimming died. We all knew him as a wonderful artist, but more importantly, as a true friend. He will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathies are with his beautiful family.” Derek was known for his vibrant abstract expressionist paintings, influenced by his father’s mid-century modern works. Despite having no formal training, he conveyed profound emotions through his art, working primarily with oils and acrylics. His works were known for their unique details and depth, inviting viewers to discover new nuances with each viewing. Derek also volunteered with various organizations, including the Children’s Lifesaving Foundation and Malibu Underdogs, providing surf therapy to kids.

“Go big or go home, that was Derek,” Danita said. “He wanted to leave a legacy, and I feel like he has done that.” The City of Malibu released a statement offering condolences and reaffirming its commitment to improving Pacific Coast Highway safety to prevent further tragedies.

The Malibu Art Association held its art show in his honor Danita Schimming and daughters Steele, Aubrey, and Tashina pose with a photo of Derek at the Malibu Art Association Art Show at Legacy Park in May following his death.

Malibu’s

Iconic Surfing Legacy

Malibu’s iconic shores shaped surfing legends and continue to attract wave riders from around the world

In the late ’50s and ’60s, Malibu was the epicenter of surfing culture. Surfrider Beach epitomized this era with its endless longboard sets and beach gatherings. Although Malibu has evolved, the shores that fostered legends like Miki Dora and Terry Tracy still draw surfers with their consistent swells and rich history.

Located on a south-facing coastline west of Santa Monica, Malibu’s geography creates ideal conditions for surfing. Storms in the South Pacific send long, rolling waves to Malibu’s beaches from May to September. Mid-century favorites like Zuma Beach remain popular spots for surfers seeking the perfect wave. Surfing in Malibu dates back to the early 1900s with pioneers like Tom Blake and Sam Reid, who ventured to find the ideal waves. Before Malibu became a town, it was a vast coastal ranch owned by the Rindge family. The ranch’s guarded boundaries made the shoreline inaccessible, but Blake and Reid braved the two-mile paddle to surf Malibu Point. The paving of the Pacific Coast Highway later opened Malibu’s coast to all, and surfboard designs improved to suit Malibu’s swift waves, allowing for longer, more controlled rides. By the ’50s and ’60s, Surfrider Beach had become the heart of Southern California surfing. Famous surfers congregated there, and notable board makers honed their crafts onshore. Miki Dora, featured in the cult classic “The Endless Summer,” and other legends defined the classic surfing style still admired today. Surfrider Beach became renowned not just for its waves but also for its atmosphere. The white sands and dramatic coastal bluffs created a sense of seclusion, despite being only 30 miles from Los Angeles. Surf music by The Beach Boys and Hollywood films like “Gidget” — inspired by a real surfer girl nicknamed by Tracy—brought the SoCal surfing lifestyle into the mainstream.

In 2010, Surfrider Beach was designated the first World Surfing Reserve by Save the Waves, a coalition dedicated to protecting global surf destinations. Today, both seasoned surfers and beginners paddle out from this iconic beach between Malibu Lagoon and Malibu Pier. While surfing techniques have evolved from longboarding to tube-riding and tow-in surfing, Malibu remains a storied and celebrated name in the history of the sport.

moving with Get Malibu Moves

Spectacular scenery and excitement await you at Malibu’s premier running event

Anticipation is building for Malibu’s sole foot race of the year. Always a sellout, this year’s Malibu Half Marathon, Malibu Moves, promises more excitement than ever. The two-day event on October 26 and 27 includes a 5K, Kids Run, and a scenic Half Marathon featuring spectacular ocean views along its 13.1-mile course.

International Protective Service, Inc. (IPS) is the title sponsor for the 5K, Half Marathon, and Kids Run. Led by CEO Aaron T. Jones, IPS is a prominent security and investigations firm known for its commitment to safety and protection. This partnership will significantly enhance safety measures and community engagement initiatives at the Malibu Moves events. With additional support from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, Rusnak BMW, Santa Monica College and The Malibu Times, this title sponsorship marks a significant milestone for Malibu Moves as it continues to expand and positively impact the community.

The running event of the season starts at Zuma Beach with an

out and back course. All finishers, whether walkers or runners, will be celebrated with a post-race beach bash like no other with a backdrop of Zuma’s crashing waves and picturesque sands. Founder and Race Director Erica Segel promises a fun and inspiring time for all ages. Her decade of experience as the previous event’s race director and manager proves she knows how to throw unrivaled post-race parties. This year’s race is capped at 3,000 ensuring a “premium and elevated” experience, Segel says. Another sellout is anticipated.

IPS/Malibu Moves’ exclusive charity partner is the Malibu Education Foundation, a community-driven fundraising organization dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities and enabling a vibrant academic experience for students in Malibu public schools. “We believe in their mission and supporting athletic programs from K1 throughout high school. We feel a strong alignment in the purpose that MEF has for the community and the message we promote to have an active lifestyle and have fun,” says Segel.

“this event is about showcasing the best of Malibu."
- Erica Segel

Adding to the festive race is the organizers’ messaging that “we’re a very inclusive event from youth to the senior population.” Segel, a seasoned runner, knows, “It can be intimidating to run a race even for those with confidence. What if I’m not going to be fast enough?  My passion is for the people who cross last. Those are the people who have probably overcome the most self-doubt and put in a tremendous amount of effort. They’re the ones who need to be supported the most.” Segel adds, “All ages, fitness levels and body sizes are welcome. I want to reverse engineer the experience from the last crossing the finish line to the first. Their stories can change you forever. The journey some participants have embarked on is so much bigger than just the race. Celebrating elite runners is expected, but what if we put the focus on personal growth and the experience?”

IPS/Malibu Moves races allow enough time for walkers and runners of all fitness levels who can count on support throughout the course. All finishers will be met with medals, food, music and of course celebration. Expect a beer garden and even massages.

“This is the only walking and running event taking place in our beautiful Malibu,” Segel notes. “Participants will be able to walk or run along the Pacific coastline. It’ll be a beautiful celebration of our community in a

perfect beach setting.”

On October 26 the event’s Movement Expo features vendors, a kids’ run, beachside movement classes, and bib pick up. The 5K and Half Marathon takes place on the 27th with everyone gathering at the Finish Line Festival. Those who raise $500 or more for charity partner MEF can gain access to a VIP lounge with curated food, deluxe restrooms and recovery lounges all while supporting a great cause.

The IPS/Malibu Moves running events will leave you soaring with breathtaking scenery and its supportive atmosphere. This is an event for everyone, no matter age or fitness level. “This is an opportunity to be a community and celebrate together with a healthy message while also supporting the Malibu Education Foundation which directly benefits back to our community. This event is about showcasing the best of Malibu which is community, support, and giving back,” says Segel.

This running and movement celebration is a standout event on the running calendar. Celebrating community will leave lasting memories for all who take part.

MalibuMagnolia Pearl

Situated in the historic Malibu Country Mart is a time machine masquerading as a clothing store—a shop not only immersive but introspective. An idyll created in honor of the grit necessary for art. Magnolia Pearl Clothing was founded in 2001 when brand creator Robin Brown crafted a humble backpack using kite string and a saddle needle. Decades later, the company continues to grow, morphing and soaring, catching the eye and snagging the hearts of world-renowned creatives. The brand’s undeniable rise isn’t due to trend but is instead tied to time. Each Magnolia Pearl garment and accessory melds old-world techniques with modern sensibilities, all while fashioning the future of clothing as wearable, sustainable art.

SUMMER 2024 | 55

Instead of curating massive, out-of-sync “seasonal” collections, Magnolia Pearl releases fresh pieces in limited quantities every two weeks. This practice provides a consistently evolving perspective for the brand’s loyal, international population of collectors as well as a new audience. Spanning ages, cultures, and affiliations, people who resonate with Magnolia Pearl all sense something authentic. From the fibers of a scarf to the foundations of their flagship stores, each of Magnolia Pearl’s constructions are imbued with the intention to bring joy and provide shelter—to bear the scars of time as life’s most precious beauty marks.

Magnolia Pearl’s Malibu storefront incorporates weathered antique curiosities against a grounding, spacious background of white. Walking in feels as though you’ve stumbled into a museum. It’s a reassuring déjá vu, a nostalgia for an era you never experienced. It’s not uncommon to take a second to situate yourself in time, and it’s a phenomenon store manager Christian Clanton knows well.

“I was the store manager and visual coordinator for Rachel Ashwell at Shabby Chic Couture, where our Magnolia Pearl Malibu location is today. It’s a bit surreal that I have come full circle, and a wonderful feeling of being back at home in our Malibu store, which resides in Shabby Chic’s previous location!” Clanton said.

As Malibu’s hills and shores were the blueprint of Robin Brown’s childhood motorcycle rides and beach walks with her father, 1960s California breathes through many of Magnolia Pearl’s designs. Even the electric sense of experimentation from that time winds through the pieces — sun-faded beach bums hitchhike alongside Oliver Twist in a clown car blaring heavy metal and spewing glitter from the tailpipe.

It’s this serendipitous, surreal mix that attracted the attention of world-renowned comedian Carrot Top. Malibu Magazine caught up with the performer in Vegas, where he headlines at MGM Resorts International properties, including the Luxor Hotel.

56 | MALIBUMAG.COM

“Everything Magnolia Pearl fits me and is perfect when it comes right out of the box!” he says. Enthusiasm for self-expression and transformation is central to Carrot Top’s career; that Magnolia Pearl’s pieces complement this physicality and energy is no small feat. According to Carrot Top, “The pants fit me terrifically every time, and all of the clothing is so comfortable, and the entire line is so unique and expressive—I only wear Magnolia Pearl on stage now!”

One of Malibu’s most kaleidoscopic musicians, Cisco Adler of the band Whitestarr, wholeheartedly agrees.

“I absolutely love—and basically live in my Magnolia Pearl!” Adler exclaimed. “Feel. That is what is so great about it. The feel of the clothing and the way the clothing makes you feel. Comfortable and dressed down, yet fabulous, and each piece is rich with texture and color. They are true pieces rather than garments. Art you can wear...”

As art does, Magnolia Pearl stands the tests and bends the confines of time. Each piece presents a work not necessarily “in progress” but in process—a woven talisman with transformation sewn in. Magnolia Pearl clothing is all cut to a “one-size-fits-most,” genderless metric and comes with various ties, snaps, buttons, cinch belts, and other features that allow for personalization. Each item is hand-tended, distressed in a way unique to that garment. Many Magnolia Pearl offerings are reversible back-to-front or inside-out.

There are as many ways to wear Magnolia Pearl as there are ways to be a person, a sentiment Magnolia Pearl’s Malibu team addresses sincerely. Pairing tuxedo coats with distressed skater jeans, hippie skirts with chimney-sweep vests—Magnolia Pearl’s “Maestros” conduct a multiverse of expression that hops decades while centering hope—synched, always, to the clock of the heart.

Only authenticity is timeless. Only the urgency of connection through expression reverberates through the ages. Magnolia Pearl aims to honor these truths not only through clothing and design, but through concrete acts of kindness, creativity, and communitybuilding.

“Soleil all the way!”

World Women’s Surf League Longboard

Champion Soleil Errico shares her love of surfing, family, and her home, Malibu

Surfrider Beach was packed with loyal fans on October 9 as Malibu surfer Soleil Errico, 23, rode the waves to her third World Women’s Surf League longboard title, continuing her legacy at the same iconic spot where her professional longboard career began, First Point.

“Soleil all the way!” the exuberant fans shouted. “Bring it home!” Buoyed by the love and support of her tight-knit family,

friends, and fans, the naturally talented Errico delightedly celebrated her victory. Hoisted on the shoulders of those who love her most, including her coach and board designer, CJ Nelson, and her proud, supportive father, Danny Errico, her beaming face lit up the shoreline.

“It’s your beach!” local Malibu surfer Timothy Hazelip shouted, “I knew you’d win!”

68 | MALIBUMAG.COM

A balancing act that’s worth it

A University of San Diego sophomore, Soleil is simultaneously pursuing her professional surfing career and a college degree. “My biggest challenge is balancing school and surfing,” Soleil shares. “My family and I have always been passionate about me having an education, but pursuing school and surfing thrusts me into two worlds that don’t understand one another. It’s really intense to attend college while surfing, but it’s a great challenge.”

“Surf culture,” she notes, “involves traveling a lot, while school involves commitments and requires one to follow a particular schedule—and it goes at a fast pace,” Soleil says. “So, I have to defer some semesters to focus on surfing. Coming back to school after doing so is disorienting.”

However, the endeavor will pay off in the long run, the champion surfer maintains, noting that it’s all worth it as she just finished her sophomore year at the University of San Diego. She hopes to ultimately work with children in some capacity—possibly with special needs kids, a population she has thoroughly enjoyed working with when volunteering through THERAsurf. The nonprofit collective of parents and professionals, like Errico, believe in the power of the ocean and share their passion with those who need it most, helping disabled children become one with the surf. Many are immersed in the sea for the first time, opening a world of wonder they never knew existed.

“I love helping with THERAsurf,” Soleil says, adding, “I also volunteer with A Walk on Water, a nonprofit whose mission is to harness the ocean’s transformative powers as it also helps disabled children enjoy the thrill of surfing.”

But there’s also her professional surfing career to pursue. “I plan to be on the longboard world tour circuit for at least a few more years,” Errico declares.

SUMMER 2024 | 69

How it all began

Soleil first competed in a surfing competition when she was living in Kauai at just 10 years old, placing third at the annual Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic.

“I enjoyed the feeling of competing while in the ocean,” Soleil explained. Hooked on the idea of surfing, her career soon rose meteorically—and what a career it has been!

Soleil has won the WSL World Longboard Tour circuit three times and aims to defend that title again this year. She first grabbed the spotlight in 2015, when she competed in the Miss Malibu Pro championship.

As a professional, Soleil has won prestigious titles, including the USA Surfing Women’s Longboard National Championships in 2016 and 2017. Noticing her impressive surfing prowess, several brands, including Stewart Surfboards and Janga Wetsuits, sought to sponsor her. Those sponsorships help her continue surfing at a highly competitive level.

Family is everything for Soleil, who grew up between Malibu and Kauai and learned to surf at age 8. Her parents have been wonderfully supportive of her throughout her entire surfing career. She travels for surfing competitions with her dad, Danny, and her mother and sisters cheer her on as well.

Soleil looks forward to the upcoming competitive season. “The tour starts in July, beginning in Bells Beach. Then, we go to Huntington Beach. They are still organizing the location of the third event,” she explains. “I am super stoked to compete in the finals in El Salvador!”

70 | MALIBUMAG.COM
SUMMER 2024 | 71

So, how to prepare for the competitions?

”I don’t have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I surf then and on the weekends. I love to surf at Sunset Cliffs, a great wave on Pacific Beach, Swami’s in Encinitas, and on a few other waves in the San Diego area.”

Always a Malibu local in all ways, Soleil adds, “However, when there is a good swell at Malibu, I try to drive back and surf it when I can because there is nowhere I’d rather surf than at home.”

Discussing how she is preparing for the upcoming tour, Errico shares, “I’m training for the tour with my coach, CJ Nelson, who gives me pointers that I can implement. He tells me what I need to work on, and we confer to ensure that I’m making progress.”

Aside from surfing, she also uses other practices to prepare for competitions. “I do hot yoga a couple of times a week, which is important for me because I am not naturally that flexible,” she reveals, adding, “Hot yoga has also been good for my balance and strength, and the way I stretch in yoga is helpful to the twists and turns I do when l am surfing.”

Dancing is another way she works out. “I dance

with a dance company that I connected with through a family friend,” she explains. “The creative dance process helps my surfing skills because it also improves my flexibility and strengthens my body.  Like surfing, I flow from one move to another when I dance. Ever since I was young, I have loved to dance. I love the way it makes me feel. I love to be creative and express myself through movement.”

When asked what her greatest strength is in surfing, she comments on the raw talent and innate abilities she is endowed with. “I feel like I was naturally born with a body that was built for longboarding,” Soleil remarks. “I also have been genetically blessed with natural athleticism, which I inherited from my parents.”

72 | MALIBUMAG.COM

Soleil has diligently practiced her surfing skills. “When I was younger, I put a lot of effort into learning how to turn my longboard, which is one of the most important things for success in the sport. Because of all the work I put in, I can easily turn my board.”

Soleil has thoroughly enjoyed the ride, traveling worldwide to compete in competitions. “I really like Australia—I feel safe there, and I appreciate how nice everyone is to one another,” she discloses, noting that she’s traveled to Australia a lot since 2015. “I am competing at Bells Beach from July 18 to 21 for the first stop on the 2024 Longboard Tour schedule.”

This year, Soleil’s sponsors are CJ Nelson Designs and BeWet Wetsuits, a line from Japan that greatly impresses her. “BeWet Wetsuits are designed using the best technology. I’m super excited to collaborate with them because having a great wetsuit is key!”

BeWet is also delighted to sponsor Soleil. “Our company has the highest quality product for the highest quality surf experience, and it’s been an honor to have Soleil on our team,” a BeWet spokesperson shared in a statement to Malibu Magazine. “Her approach to the sport is diligent yet free, blending both tradition and progression. Soleil shows us some of the most beautiful surfing in the world.”

When asked what surfing means to her, Soleil simply says, “Surfing is not just a sport for me— it’s who I am because it’s what I’ve dedicated my whole life to. Connecting with Mother Nature is one of the best things one can experience as a human. Surfing is the number one thing that brings me my greatest joy.”

Every time Soleil’s loyal fans get to watch her compete, they share in her passion and joy. You’ll often hear them emphatically chanting from the shore, “Soleil all the way! Bring it home!”

Coastal Paradise

The Enchanting Beaches of Malibu

Beckoning sightseers the world over, our Malibu beaches are an enchanting blend of nature’s finest elements, each possessing its own distinct allure. From surfing to sunbathing to tide pooling, Malibu’s stunning coastline is diverse, forming an exquisite tapestry of coastal splendor. As locals, we are very protective of our beaches. Summertime brings in many visitors, so it’s important for them to understand why we love it here so much so they can, too. So in honor of summer, let’s dive into the best beaches Malibu has to

offer and discover what makes each one special.

Low tide is the best time to visit Malibu’s most eastern beach at Coastline Drive. Check a tide chart to determine when the water ebbs. At first glance, the wave-swept rocks may seem void of life, but a closer peak will reveal a mélange of sea stars, sea anemones, sea cucumbers, and if you’re lucky, octopi. Remember, never take any sea creatures home from tide pool habitats. You could face fines in a marine-protected area.

Known for its famous right break during a big swell, iconic Surfrider Beach made its impact on surfing culture in the 1960s, and boardriders can still ride the infamous break all the way to the pier today. Recognized the world over as a gold-standard surf spot, Surfrider attracts the “big Kahunas” of surfing. Located in the heart of Malibu, the beach has been featured in countless movies and television shows and is a favorite of two-time Malibu Mayor Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner, whose Zuma Jay surf shop of over 50 years sits just down the street. It’s also a favorite for well-known Los Angeles County Lifeguard Services Captain Kealiinohopono “Pono” Barnes who recalls, “I was stationed there for a little over a year and it’s a little pocket of paradise. I’d drive up early before work (sometimes even on my days off) all the way from Hermosa Beach and surf perfect Malibu before the crowd got on it. Between surfing and the start of my shift, I’d walk over to the Adamson House and drink my coffee on the lawn while I watched the crowd surf with the pier in the background. A perfect start to the day.” (Note: It’s a small parking lot, and free street spots fill up quickly in the mornings.)

Paradise Cove is a charming beach tucked next to its namesake restaurant. Parking is expensive and fills up fast, but a four-hour validation is available with a $30 minimum purchase. The public is welcome to walk in and use the area of the beach below the mean high tide line free of charge. Use caution if parking on Pacific Coast Highway since there are no sidewalks.

Point Dume State Beach features rocky coves, cliffs, and headlands with panoramic views for whale watching. Most whales have finished their migration north for the summer, but an abundance of seals call the area home. A brand-new flight of stairs has replaced a rickety old staircase leading to the sand. Parking is extremely limited at Point Dume. Better luck prevails in finding a parking space at neighboring Westward Beach, the southern and quieter half of Zuma Beach with lifeguards and restrooms.

Zuma Beach is a perfect location for beginning surfers. In fact, Zuma Beach has something for everyone, from volleyball nets, plentiful parking, restrooms, and snack shacks to boasting some of the best lifeguards in the world. Year after year, Zuma lifeguards who rescue thousands from the beach’s notorious rip currents win top prizes in world lifesaving championships. Known for its long, wide sands, Zuma is also gaining a reputation for consistently ranking among the healthiest beaches for clean water conditions in Los Angeles County. Tip: Zuma Beach gets windy in the afternoons.

Rugged beauty is a feature of Malibu’s most western beaches. Leo Carrillo’s 1.5 miles of coastline has an expansive stretch of tide pools and hidden sea caves, best explored by expert swimmers and adventurers.

One of the most impressive beaches in California is El Matador. Tucked away along the rugged coastline, El Matador Beach is a hidden gem known for its dramatic rock formations and secluded coves. The natural beauty of El Matador attracts photographers snapping swimsuit models as well as plein air painters. El Matador’s striking sea stacks cast dramatic shadows at sunset. Make sure to bring sturdy shoes for navigating the rocky terrain and a camera to capture its splendor.

Another hidden gem to the west is La Piedra. This secluded, picturesque strand is accessed by a steep staircase, making it the ideal beach for a romantic walk. Tip: Don’t leave any valuables in your car.

The pocket beach to the west, El Pescador, is one of Malibu’s most secluded. Nestled below a bluff on Pacific Coast Highway, El Pescador Beach is only accessible by a long trail to the sand. If you time your visit to low tide, it will reveal El Pescador’s tide pools along with a secret county beach called El Sol, which doesn’t have its own access yet.

Coastal conservationist Pono Barnes reminds visitors, “The best and easiest way to be a good steward of the beach is to leave it cleaner than you found it. Don’t bring trash to the beach; pack the trash you do bring, and pick up trash that others have left behind.” Zuma Jay concurs, imploring everyone to keep Malibu’s precious natural resources clean for the locals, visitors, and future generations.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a simple day of sun and surf, you’ll surely find it all along the stunning coastline of Malibu. So, grab your sunscreen and beach towel and discover why Malibu is a paradise for beach lovers everywhere.

Welcome home to the beauty of coastal living in Malibu, where each day is framed by breathtaking views, and blessed with weather that invites us to embrace outdoor living. In this issue, we celebrate the essence of coastal living, where every moment feels like an endless summer.

As we delve into the heart of outdoor living, we had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Putrimas, the CEO and owner of Teak Warehouse. His dedication to design and quality craftsmanship shines through as we explore the world of teak furnishings, both indoor and outdoor, offered at wholesale prices, making luxury living more accessible than ever.

Continuing our journey, we visit Pacific Patio Furniture, a family-owned haven in Agoura Hills. Since 2013, they've been providing a personalized experience for customers, allowing them to touch, feel, and envision their perfect outdoor oasis, surrounded by knowledgeable staff eager to bring their design dreams to life.

In today's world, safety and security are paramount, and we had the privilege of sitting down with Aaron Jones of International Protective Service (IPS). With a legacy of safeguarding our community, IPS now leads the charge in innovative aviation safety solutions, including 24/7/365 drone surveillance, ensuring peace of mind in every corner of Malibu.

As we immerse ourselves in the joys of coastal living, let us remember the simple pleasures of year-round beach days and the timeless beauty that surrounds us. Whether it's lounging on sun-kissed shores or gathering with loved ones under starlit skies, Malibu embodies the spirit of summer, inviting us to savor every moment and embrace the magic of life by the sea. Here's to the essence of Malibu living, where every day is a celebration of sun, surf, and the sheer joy of living in paradise.

Teak TW Warehouse

"I've been in the teak industry for more than 20 years. I used to work at Dr. Teak, where I led the company as president for 14 years, and I also furnished teak elements for worldclass designers and manufacturers," says Chris Putrimas, CEO and owner of Teak Warehouse, a design-focused company. "Now, I operate Teak Warehouse, which manufactures and sells quality teak furnishings, both indoor and outdoor, at wholesale prices to the public, offering much lower prices than other major retailers."

SUMMER 2024 | 87

Every year, Putrimas, who has expertise in both furniture design and maintenance, goes to Indonesian markets to seek out A-grade teak furniture using his keen eye for quality.

Teak Warehouse offers customers an extensive array of quality, reasonably priced designs at two Southern California warehouses—one in San Diego and a new one in Hawthorne, a city in the Los Angeles area. Customers sourcing from Teak Warehouse include architects, designers, and contractors on large-scale projects as well as individuals looking for affordable luxury with quality that will stand the test of time.

Teak Warehouse offers a wide array of options to fit the needs and design preferences of any space—dining areas, modular sofas, lounge seating, outdoor bars, garden furniture, poolside, fire pit, and fireplace seating. "We are constantly creating new design choices for our customers, using ropes to develop the new products and create new looks," Putrimas explains. "We take pride in offering customers a wide range of options to design the stylish outdoor relaxation or entertainment space of their dreams."

The company's use of high-quality materials, combined with its dedication to excellence in manufacturing, guarantees that customers will be pleased with their purchases. Putrimas mentions that teak furniture is always an ideal choice for wooden outdoor furnishings. "Teak is a very stable timber which has a high oil and rubber content, creating a built-in water repellent and making teak virtually immune to rotting," he notes.

Another aspect that distinguishes Teak Warehouse is the fast turnaround time between order placement and delivery or pick up. "If a customer is ordering something without cushions, the turnaround time for availability is approximately two weeks," Putrimas says.

Teak Warehouse features a fabric line from Neptune Fabrics, a Spanish-based company that uses the highest standard of textile craftsmanship, which is more than a century old. Manufactured using 100 percent solution-dyed acrylic fiber, the fabrics can withstand the harshest outdoor conditions, incorporating a variety of qualities and treatments to cope with the most demanding environments. They are available in a wide variety of stunningly beautiful materials and styles, and their water-resistant finishing ensures that they are stain-repellant, easy to clean, and require minimal maintenance.

With summer's arrival, many Malibu locals are venturing outside to design custom outdoor gathering spaces. Teak Warehouse's ultrapopular Toscana Teak Outdoor Bar—solid, chic, and masterfully made—is perfect for entertaining and enjoying the outdoors and is as beautiful as it is functional. Accompany the bar with counterheight tables made from durable materials such as A-grade teak, aluminum, and even concrete. Not only will these tables hold up against the elements, but they will look fantastic doing so. From small, two-person tables to larger rectangular tables and fully assembled outdoor bar stools in various styles, Teak Warehouse has exactly what you need to make outdoor entertainment memorable and efficient.

"Customers love our many design choices, quality, and affordability," Putrimas asserts. "They especially love that most of our furniture is available immediately, sourced directly from our warehouses, and cushions are available within two weeks. Further, delivery is free with qualifying purchases."

ENHANCES MALIBU'S SAFETY WITH ADVANCED AVIATION TECH

With its well-established, highly respected footprint in Malibu and nearby communities, International Protective Service, Inc. (IPS) has been providing customers with an extensive array of premier security and personal protection services since before the Woolsey Fire. IPS is now pioneering a new suite of cutting-edge, subscription-only, advanced aviation safety solutions, including 24/7/365 drone surveillance. With their fleet of drones, planes, and helicopters, IPS can detect fires, landslides, and other disasters, assist with firefighting efforts, and, if it becomes necessary, conduct emergency extraction of clients in the event of a wildfire or other natural disaster.  The new suite of services will be offered under IPS’ Global Aviation Division and will consist of a fully certified crew (i.e., pilots, flight crew, and flight engineers).

“You may have seen our drones outside,” Aaron T. Jones, CEO of IPS, told those gathered at Santa Monica College for the annual Malibu State of the City event on May 10. Contributing to the community as it always does, IPS was the event’s premier sponsor, and Jones gave a short presentation to attendees regarding the new services.

“IPS has invested in the capability of drone surveillance and security solutions,” Jones said. “Our drone fleet includes state-of-the-art drones equipped with high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging technology, and real-time data transmission capabilities, which allows for immediate analysis and response to potential threats.”

“With our new advanced technology, we can effectively monitor large areas, detect potential threats, and respond swiftly to any security incidents,” he said. Elaborating, he stated, “Because the government cannot be everywhere at once, we also will be offering subscription clients services from our fleet of aircraft that puts water retardant on homes and, if absolutely necessary due to extreme conditions, we can extract clients from dangerous situations. Our experienced team includes former military officers who did that for a living.”

IPS AVIATION assets & key personnel

IPS has a very strong bench of veterans, including aircraft pilots, engineers, operators, and air controllers, with the highest level of accreditation and among the best in the industry. The crew has extensive training and experience in aviation and emergency response and is housed under the same roof, on standby 24/7. By the time someone calls in about a fire or other emergency, the crew has already detected it and is airborne.

Leveraging the latest in aviation technology, IPS’ fleet includes high-performance aircraft like the Challenger 600 and Westwind II jets, as well as Sikorsky S76 and AS350 helicopters, equipped for specialized missions.  Denis Oliver, Chief Pilot of IPS Global Aviation, handles all the aerial operations, from pilot training to maintenance to engineering on all the different ships.

94 | MALIBUMAG.COM

“Our AS365 dolphin is equipped with a hoist, water drop, night vision capabilities, and more,” Oliver said, noting that the helicopter is used by the coast guards and is even fully capable of flying into hurricanes.

“The drones are state of the art with thermal capabilities, 200x zoom, and they are airborne 24/7, with a fully certified crew monitoring with the help of AI capabilities,” Oliver explained. “These are not drones that we temporarily deploy when something happens. Rather, the drones are constantly monitoring day and night all year round—they are already on site before anyone even knows something happened.”

Elaborating, Oliver explained, “Our control center receives data live, ready to dispatch within seconds. Our center is accessible to selected operators and controllers with the highest level of accreditation to protect our customers and their privacy.”

The drone and helicopter/jet dispatch operations are under the same roof, with pilots, flight crew, and flight engineers on standby 24/7, Jones said, adding, “By the time someone calls for fire or any other threats, we have already detected and are already airborne. The government doesn’t have these capabilities today.” Oliver also noted that IPS Global Aviation owns a fleet of demilitarized fighter jets for urgent dispatch and other air support.

“Those jets are also used to save lives by rescuing human organs running out of time and delivering them to recipients in need. IPS is not only a company protecting communities with security, but also a company that is involved in other causes that impact people’s lives in the best possible way.”

Oliver emphasized that IPS is so powerful because air and ground support are under the same company. “No one out there built such powerful operations, and there is no miscommunication between different entities; We Are One.”

SUMMER 2024 | 95

AARON JONES

Jones, who is the visionary behind the successful protective services company’s 18-year-long success, explained, “Our new services will provide subscribing customers with the confidence that they can detect and deal with a variety of potential hazards and disasters. We will offer our subscription customers greater security assurances by protecting their properties and detecting possible risks to a client’s home or business, including fires, landslides, and floods.”

IPS Global Aviation’s new suite of services will help to identify fires early and to protect clients as well as their properties before, during, and after any natural disasters or criminal activity. Importantly, in an absolute worst case scenario, IPS’ team will seamlessly, swiftly, and safely evacuate clients should conditions deteriorate to such a state that leaving is the only viable option available to save lives.

Area residents and businesses in disaster-prone Malibu and nearby who retain IPS’s new subscription drone and aviation services will enjoy a priceless sense of security, no matter what risks they may face. Fires, landslides, and floods are all far too common in our coastal and mountain neighborhoods.

“Our expansive aviation support will provide subscribers with immediate transportation in emergency situations,” Jones explained.

96 | MALIBUMAG.COM

“To manage expectations, I want to be sure that our readers know that this is not a service for the masses. That is what the government does. Rather, just like IPS, the security division, we are a boutique entity that will be an elite service to take care of specific 'subscription'-based clients.”

Jones emphasized that IPS “knows exactly how important this service will be to the entire community. We were here during Woolsey. We know what happened. We know there is a need for what we offer, especially with the insurance companies abandoning so many people here in this amazing community.”

Jones added that IPS Global’s new services will ensure quick and effective action in all critical situations, stating, “Whether it’s a fire emergency or the need for urgent extraction, the team’s rapid response capability can be the difference between a crisis averted and a disaster.  IPS Global understands that every client has unique needs, and it works closely with clients to develop customized solutions that address each customer’s specific challenges, ensuring optimal outcomes every time.”

Jones shared that IPS already has many people who are very interested in the new drone and aviation services, which the company will be rolling out in the very near future.

Loyally committed to Malibu area locals, Jones added, “We are looking forward to showing the community the care and concern we have for this world-renowned community and beyond, as we progress in our development and addition of resources and technologies.”

IPS invites readers to explore the new security and evacuation services by reaching out by phone or visiting the IPS Global website. Call (855) 554-7477 or go to ipsglobal.com.  An Aviation website will soon roll out, and IPS is already keeping a waiting list for interested customers.

Smiling during his presentation at the City of Malibu State of the City event, Jones noted that the first time he ever visited Malibu was in 1989, “as a long-haired hippie in a rock band thinking I might contribute to saving the world.”

Then, on a serious note, he stated, “However, I didn’t save the world with my music. So, I decided that I’d change the world with my security services to help with the safety of this lovely community.”

“We look forward to debuting and offering our subscription services in the Malibu community in the very near future,” Jones said. “It will go hand in hand with the tradition of service that IPS has established in Malibu and nearby for the last 18 years.”

MANSIONS

Europe’s most prestigious and exclusive destination Sotogrande has drastically increased in popularity lately, where Sotogrande is recognized as being the Southern California of Europe and a favored destination for the wealthy jet-setters.

As a result, the whole Sotogrande area is becoming increasingly more sought-after by potential homeowners. With more high-end restaurants and luxury amenities frequently popping up, the destination’s opulence continues to be enhanced, which serves to only encourage further investment.

Occasionally there is an opportunity to create something unique, a community of extraordinary homes for extraordinary families, something truly rare and sublime.

In the heart of Sotogrande, a globally unique enclave, Sotogrande City and ARK architects came together with a single vision: to create a project that would become a paradigm of a philosophy of life, to create a masterpiece integrated in to the landscape with nature as the protagonist. This collaboration resulted in NIWA, a spiritual retreat that transcends conventional boundaries and seamlessly blends in with the environment. The project draws inspiration from the beauty of nature. In fact, preserving it, honoring it and living in complete harmony with it was an unquestionable premise of this project. This is how NIWA was born, which appears to emerge directly from the surrounding landscape. Its structures are organically interwoven with the environment, taking advantage of the natural elements. NIWA blends in with nature, becoming an integral part of it and creating a sense of peace, balance and security for its inhabitants.

One of the most exclusive residential estates in Europe. The Mediterranean Sea, the cradle of Western civilization, is today one of the most beautiful natural sites in Europe. It has an exceptional climate of eternal summers and mild winters, sun almost every day of the year and an almost infinite extension of soft sandy beaches and impressive coves. Established in 1962 on the western side of the Costa del Sol in Andalusia, Sotogrande starts from the Mediterranean Sea and climbs up to the foothills of the Sierra Almenara mountain range. Famous as a golfing destination, with world renowned Real Club Valderrama on-site, along La Reserva Club and Real Club Sotogrande, the estate is a paradise for sports lovers with facilities for world class polo, tennis, sailing, and water sports for all ages.

“As summer graces Malibu’s shores, let’s embrace gratitude for our beaches, Mother Earth, and our community. As the season bustles forth, may our visitors hold our shores dear, for Summer in Malibu is a haven of love, surf, and windswept beach hair.”
