Paso Robles Art in the Park brings community to life

Artists from across the state showcase works at biannual event

PASO ROBLES — Over 100 artists filled Paso Robles City Park last weekend for the biannual November Art in the Park. The event, organized by Steve Powers and Company, has long been a fixture in the community, attracting art lovers from across California and beyond.

For two days, Nov. 8 and 9, visitors explored booths filled with original artwork, including paintings, sculp -

tures, ceramics, jewelry, and photography. Despite its latefall timing, warm weather and sunshine welcomed attendees and artists alike for one last outdoor hurrah before cooler temperatures arrive in San Luis Obispo County.

Recognized as one of the top 10 fine art shows in California, Art in the Park continues to offer a platform for creativity, connection, and inspiration.

Among this year’s featured artists was local favorite Andrew Wilkie, an Atascadero High School teacher known for his one-of-a-kind “Art Grounded in Coffee” series. Using fresh coffee grounds of

NORTH COUNTY — It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — 107 years ago — World War I ended with an armistice signing between the Allies and

Germany. Twenty years later, on May 13, 1938, that Nov. 11 was anointed as Armistice Day and proclaimed as “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace.” North County came together on Tuesday, in Atasacdero and Paso Robles, to honor and give thanks to our country’s veterans.

The tribute supported the museum’s mission and operations; included dinner and music.

PASO ROBLES — The Estrella Warbirds Museum rolled out the red carpet for military members, first responders, and their families during its annual Salute to Our Heroes tribute weekend, a celebration filled with music, cars, history, and family-friendly activities. Formerly held in May, this year’s festivities began on Friday, Nov. 7, with a dinner dance featuring local favorite Unfinished Business, followed by a full day of events on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The weekend opened with an evening in the museum’s newly renovated Hangar 1, where guests enjoyed a tri-tip and chicken dinner listening to Unfinished Business’ covers of rock ’n’ roll classics spanning the ’50s through the ’80s.

On Tuesday, the community gathered at the Paso Robles District Cemetery to acknowledge and give thanks to our local veterans. This Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Paso Robles District Cemetery welcomed back its Veterans Day Ceremony.

Each year, the cemetery creates the Avenue of Flags throughout the grounds to pay tribute to our veterans. Additionally, the flags are accompanied by a ceremony conducted at 11 a.m. sharp, with notable speakers, bands, and a flyover by the Warbirds Museum.

Master of Ceremonies and VFW Post Commander

VFW10965 Leo Castillo welcomed the public to the service, which included an invocation by Pastor Laurene McCoy and keynote speaker SLO County Veterans Services Manager Morgan Boyd, MPP, U.S. Army.

Castillo spoke to the copyand-paste nature of Veteran’s Day and asked the community to adapt, and do something a little different this year.

“We have to adapt and our veterans are adaptable ... and what I am asking you all to do moving forward is to be adaptable and to do something different for Veterans Day,” said Castillo.

This year marked the first year that the Paso Robles City Council have declared November Veteran’s Appreciation Month, rather than celebrating just one day of the year.

The Paso Robles District Cemetery is home to 1,200 VA (Veteran Affairs) issued headstones. But that number is increased to over 2,000 when counting privately issued veteran headstones. Some veterans from

the Spanish-American War are buried in the Pioneer section of the cemetery.

Patriotic music was provided by the Cuesta Concord Chorus with a well-timed flyover from the Estrella Warbirds. The local Scouts of America led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. volunteers from the VFW, Boy Scouts, Moose Lions Club, and others help put flags

on every veteran’s grave in the cemetery.

“Its an honor to stand with you here today, amongst veterans, families and friends on sacred ground. Where the names carved in stone, remind us of freedom and the strength of a community that remembers,” said Boyd. “Veterans Day is not a day of mourning. It is a day of gratitude ... this day

honors those who came home.” Boyd commended VFW Post 10965 for working to build a stronger community with veterans and setting a high standard for the country to follow.

Hundreds gathered at the Faces of Freedom Memorial in Atascadero on Tuesday to honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces, with a special focus this year on veter-

ans of the Vietnam War. This year’s Veterans Day ceremony coincided with the final day of the national commemoration period for the Vietnam War’s 50th anniversary, giving special meaning to the tribute.

Atascadero Veterans Memorial Association organizers wanted to make this year’s event particularly meaningful for those who fought in Viet-

nam. Many Vietnam veterans attended, including keynote speaker Capt. Martin Tovar, who served two tours in Vietnam after enlisting in the Army.

Since 2008, the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Association has hosted the annual ceremony at the Faces of Freedom Memorial, honoring veterans of all eras. The day’s program featured an Estrella Warbirds Museum flyover, a Quilts of Valor presentation, live music, and heartfelt tributes.

Assemblymember Dawn Addis, who spoke at the event, shared her appreciation on social media for the veterans and the community that came together to honor them.

“It was an honor to speak at today’s Faces of Freedom Veterans Day — a Tribute to our Vietnam Veterans Ceremony in Atascadero, hosted by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation,” Addis said. “From the Estrella Warbirds flyover to the Quilts of Valor presentation, music, and heartfelt tributes, our community came together in full force to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. Thank you to every veteran and family member who continues to inspire us with your courage, leadership, and love of country.”

He shared, “All of my artwork is done with fresh ground coffee of different roasts, some light, some dark, some mix, some on canvas.”

Originally from Colorado, Wilkie’s passion for the outdoors began early and grew alongside his exploration of visual arts, including ceramics, stained glass, batik, and sculpture. His love of coffee began while living in Costa Rica, where he was inspired to experiment with coffee as a medium. After years of trial and error, he discovered that fresh grounds offer different shades of brown and black, giving each

Saturday’s main event offered a tribute to veterans and first responders through an array of experiences. Attendees enjoyed a Show ‘n Shine car show, historic military vehicles, and watched reenactments and paratrooper drops throughout the day. “The Vets and Vibes event was a thought I had about a year ago to try to do some kind of a celebration, like a Sunday Funday, basically celebrate veterans and their families,” Castillo told Paso Robles Press . “I wanted to hone in on not making it just solely for veterans, but commu -

Now living in Morro Bay, he continues to find inspiration in his natural surroundings and in the joy of seeing familiar faces at the Paso Robles show.

“It’s been a great venue for me,” he said. “There’s trees everywhere here, where the people have vine-

One of the weekend’s highlights was the parachute team, featuring jump-qualified military veterans who continued their craft post-service. “They’re all military jump qualified. Some of them have hundreds or maybe even thousands of jumps,” said Couch. “They were trained in the military in an airboard unit, and then they continue on after they’ve gotten out. It’s their own organization, and they travel around different places and do the jumps. We just have to

nity. A lot of our community members don’t really know about the veterans in their community or the vets hall or what we offer there or what we do.”

Castillo noted that the event also served to commemorate the city’s Veterans Month proclamation, which the VFW had advocated for and celebrated as a significant milestone.

“We wanted to kind of kick it off with a big party,

having some resources there for veterans and their families, but then also like having cornhole and having food vendors and having drinks for purchase and basically letting people kind of hang out, bring their families, walk around, eat a hot dog, have a taco, get them information about college benefits, so on and so forth,” he explained.

The event also had a philanthropic purpose. Proceeds from Vets & Vibes, which

Another returning artist, Melisa Beveridge, brought a heartfelt mission to the park with her business, Woollybear Travels. Beveridge, a former scientific illustrator turned veterinary technician, paints portraits of rescued animals and donates 10 percent of each sale back to the rescue organization that helped save the animal.

“If I could find a way to do art and

In addition, organizations like the Association of the United States Army and Veterans Affairs set up informational booths.

“We have such a good participation from the different first responders and military organizations ... it’s really cool to see all that kind of representation out there,” Couch shared.

Couch emphasized that all funds raised from the weekend directly supported the museum’s operations.

“This event today is raising funds solely for Warbirds [Museum] for operations,” he explained. “It keeps the lights on and doors open because we have a lot of different accounts for

Community support played a key role in the day’s success.

Sponsors and vendors, including local breweries, food vendors, and service companies, helped bring the event to life. Many attendees enjoyed offerings from local favorites like Carnales Street Tacos and California Coast Beer Co., among others. Castillo expressed gratitude for their contributions, noting that local businesses had been

instrumental in supporting veterans through ongoing partnerships.

The Vets & Vibes event is expected to become an annual tradition, with organizers planning to continue raising funds for the monument while providing a festive, community-centered celebration of local veterans and their families.

Paso Robles launches Paramedic Squad to strengthen emergency medical services

The City of Paso Robles announced the launch of its Paramedic Squad, effective Sunday, Nov. 9, marking a major step forward in the city’s commitment to public safety and high-quality emergency medical care.

This specialized unit, funded through Measure J-20 and supported by the Paso Robles City Council and the community, is designed to rapidly respond to medical emergencies with highly trained paramedics and Advanced Life Support capabilities. By focusing on medical incidents, the Paramedic Squad allows fire engines and specialized equipment to remain available for fires, rescues, and other complex emergencies.

“Medical emergencies account for the majority of 9-1-1 calls within the city,” the city noted in a press release.

“The Paramedic Squad ensures paramedic-level care arrives quickly while improving operational efficiency and system readiness during multiple incidents.”

The initiative is part of a comprehensive, data-driven strategy to enhance emergency medical services citywide. By aligning resources with realtime needs, the squad improves unit availability, enables faster access to lifesaving interventions, and reduces wear on heavy fire apparatus.

Central Coast Moving & Storage is once again giving back this holiday season through its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Donation Drive, aiming to provide 500 turkeys to families in need across San Luis Obispo County.

This year’s goal splits the effort between North and South County — 75% of turkeys will go to North County families, with the remaining 25% distributed in the South County. Using its own insulated moving trucks, Central Coast Moving & Storage ensures each turkey is delivered fresh and handled with care.

North County distribution will take place Thursday, Nov. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Adventist Health Twin Cities, while South

County families can pick up turkeys on Friday, Nov. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Adventist Health Sierra Vista.Volunteers from both organizations will assist with logistics, distribution, and community outreach.

“At Central Coast Moving, giving back is part of who we are,” said owner Austin Yarborough. “After seeing the difference we made last year, we’re proud to go bigger! Our 400 turkeys plus 100 from Adventist Health on the Central Coast mean many more families can gather around a worry-free meal this Thanksgiving.”

“Adventist Health on the Central Coast is honored to partner with Central Coast Moving & Storage to support families across our community this Thanksgiving,” said Meghan Shoven, director of the Adventist Health Central Coast Foundation. “As a not-for-profit health system, we are committed to inspiring wholeness and hope through care that uplifts every person we serve. This effort reflects the heart of our mission — neighbors coming together to ensure every family feels supported, valued, and cared for.”
