magine this, you have been experiencing debilitating headaches daily for months. Over a threemonth period, you visit your internist on several occasions where he diagnoses you with an allergy infection, and later treats you for a sinus infection. The head pains do not subside, so you make a few visits to your lifelong best friend who is an ophthalmologist complaining that you feel a growth behind your eyes and he says you are imaging something is wrong. After three months of severe symptoms, you are so sick on a family vacation that you visit an urgent care doctor who insists that you should have a CAT scan. It is then that this medical stranger walks into your room, and tells you that he has very bad news. You have a large mass growing in your head and will need immediate surgery.

It takes four days to stabilize you until you can fly back to Los Angeles, where you undergo the standard of care, which is a craniotomy and resection of your 6cm brain tumor, 6 weeks of daily radiation and chemotherapy, monthly MRIs and 5 days a month of oral chemotherapy. You maintain a healthy athletic lifestyle, participate in available experimental immunological studies, however since there is a high incidence of tumor regrowth despite receiving treatment, you die 15 months later at the age of 49 at the height of your music career, leaving behind a wife of 17 years and two teenage children.

This is the story of my husband, Craig Aaronson, who died from a Grade

4 Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Tumor (GBM) in 2014. GBM is the most common and aggressive form of the brain cancer and it is the tumor type that led to the passing of Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy and Joseph R. “Beau” Biden III, and now affects Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Today, nearly 700,000 people in the United States are living with a primary brain tumor, and approximately 80,000 more will be diagnosed in 2018. In California, they predict that close to 9,000 new patients will be diagnosed. More than 30,000 children (ages 0-19) are estimated to be living with a brain tumor in the United States. An estimated 4,610 children are expected to be diagnosed this year with brain tumors, being the leading cause of cancer related deaths in children and young adults under 19.

More so than any other cancer, brain tumors can be deadly and significantly impact quality of life for a patient and their loved ones. The average survival rate for all brain tumor patient is only 34%, or about 15 months with treatment. They affect all ages. They do not discriminate, inflicting men, women and children of all races, ethnicities and political affiliations, taking the lives of close to 20,000 Americans this year.

The National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) is the largest, and one of the most influential nonprofit organizations dedicated to the global brain tumor community. Their mission states they are fiercely committed to finding better treatments and driving rapid progress toward finding a cure for brain

tumors by influencing and funding strategic research and public policy to achieve the greatest impact and results for both adult and pediatric brain tumors. One of the ways that they do this is by hosting an annual “Head to the Hill” Congressional event in Washington D.C.

This year over 200 advocates from 38 states gathered for “Head to the Hill” to ensure the voice of the brain tumor community is being heard on Capitol Hill. To prepare its advocates, the NBTS hosted a comprehensive training day featuring scientists, doctors, policy experts and guest speakers who provided information and tips on how to use their personal stories to affect change. In the afternoon, the advocates were

broken up into state teams to practice their personal stories, the “Asks” or talking points we had for our elected officials, and the choreography of a congressional meeting. Our first “Ask” for the U.S. House of Representatives is to support the Childhood Cancer STAR Act. One in five American children diagnosed with cancer will not survive their disease, and of those who do, 80% will suffer from serve lifelong deficits and complications related to their cancer and treatments. The Childhood Cancer STAR Act is a critical next step in furthering children’s cancer research efforts as it is the most comprehensive childhood cancer legislation ever taken up by Congress. It represents important

BRITT AARONSON

bipartisan legislation designed to advance pediatric cancer research and child-focused cancer treatments, while also improving childhood cancer surveillance and providing enhanced resources for survivors and those impacted by kids’ cancers.

Our second “Ask” is to support an increase in medical research funding for the National Institute of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Department of Defense’s Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program. Treatment options remain limited in both number and effectiveness, and very little progress has been made against the disease with only 4 FDA approved drugs for more than 130 types of brain tumors in the last 40 years. The cost of developing a new cancer drug is estimated to cost more than $1 billion and take upwards of 15 years. Clinical trials can cost tens of millions of dollars to fund so medical research funding is essential.

The next morning we assembled at Capitol Hill for a breakfast with Senator Chris Van Hollen (DMD), brain tumor survivor and NASCAR driver, Matt Tifft, and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) who thanked everyone for their support of the STAR Act and encouraged us to keep up the pressure on his colleagues in the House and Senate.

Breakfast was quick, as we had early morning meetings with Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Kamala Harris and Representative Brad Sherman. Within the span of nine hours, we walked over 5 miles in the historic Capitol Building halls and were able to have additional meetings with California State Congressman Jerry McNerney, Congresswoman Karen Bass, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Congressman Jim Costa, Congressman Ken Calvert, Congressman Edward Royce, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

We ran into Congresswoman Maxine Waters in the Rayburn Building hallway and began advocating directly to her as we walked. She grabbed my son Rayce’s hand and the two strolled down the hallway while she compassionately asked him questions about his father’s battle with brain cancer.

We honor Craig by raising awareness of the needs and priorities of the brain tumor community and by supporting research funding and the STAR Act. We will continue to advocate on behalf of the brain tumor community because we have learned that our same voices that educate our policymakers may make a difference in the life of at least one person caring for or living with brain tumors.

HIDDEN HILLS RESIDENT AND EVENT PLANNER ASHLEY CHANEL

PUTS FAMILY FIRST, BUT IS ALWAYS UP FOR A PARTY

Growing up, Superwoman may have worn an elaborate, metallic costume that signified her strength to the world. However, today, Superwoman looks like the devoted, doting mom who balances a challenging, full-time career while simultaneously making sure her children are happy, healthy and all on-board with the organized chaos we call life. Ashley Chanel,

mom of five, always had a passion for planning events.

From the young age of 12, Chanel planned her mother’s wedding and has been the first to take the reigns, transforming any and every event into a carefully curated production ever since then.

“It’s definitely a job I am super passionate about and where I can still be the mom I had been prior, but I feel

like it’s really good for them to see how hard I work, especially my girls as they get older,” Chanel said, “It’s really important to me for my girls to see that you can be a kick-ass mom and a kick-ass business woman.”

Formerly known as Girl Gang Productions, Ash to Ash Productions changed names in March of this year, while she and her husband were bouncing around ideas of what to brand her

business in order to include more people, not solely girls. Chanel began her journey as a sought after event planner when she was conjuring up different business ventures that would allow her to be the business woman she strived to be, without compromising the mom-role she needed to be for her five kids.

“I did event planning growing up, gathering my friends for surprise birthdays, or even sweet 16‘s. Then when I became a mom, I would plan all of the PTA meetings and school auctions,”

Chanel said. “After my divorce five years ago, my girlfriend asked what my dream job would be and I said I would love to be an event planner, but didn’t think it could be a real job. I started doing little jobs here and there and people started hiring me more, which became this full-blown event production.”

Ash to Ash productions was mainly focused on the wedding circuit for awhile, which Chanel still considers to be the most popular event she plans and executes for her clients. However,

Chanel is someone who does not shy away from any event or challenge presented to her, but rather meets each event she plans with excitement and undeniable finesse. Ash to Ash Productions is diversified in the types of events they offer to their clientele, from photoshoots to glamorous dinner parties. “Most of our clients are California based. LA is our home base, but we travel all over for events,” Chanel said.

Although Ash to Ash Productions operates near Los Angeles, Chanel is more than eager to travel for business in order to ensure her clients’ ultimate satisfaction.

Chanel has an unfailing home support from her family, especially her husband, who recognizes her tireless work ethic and is always willing to make her work an equal priority.

“The dynamic between my husband and me is wonderful, he is super supportive of me

being a great mom and a great business woman at the same time, which I am grateful for because not every working mom has that,” Chanel said. In addition to the support she receives from her loving family, Chanel attributes Hidden Hills as a large support system for her business, as well as for the personal and professional goals she sets for herself.

“The women and working moms all tend to rally around each other and support one another. There’s never

cattiness; it’s inspiring,” Chanel said. She may not wear a shiny superhero suit, but Chanel is a 21st century vision of what Superwoman should be: a mom who has a fierce passion for her career and family, while simultaneously balancing all of life’s crazy with an attitude of gratefulness.

WITHIN ten10

Sherri Bostwick was born and raised an island girl, living her day to day life in southern Florida and spending family vacations in the Bahamas. With a family background in architecture and design, creativity has always been in Sherri’s blood, so opening a space to sell exquisite and personal home decor with a hint of an island flavor was nothing short of natural.

Once she was married—to actor, Barry Bostwick, Sherri settled down in Southern California and dedicated her time to being a Stay-at-Home Mom for her children. In her son and daughter’s’ last years of high school, she decided to take up jewelry design, sparking the progression towards her ultimate dream of having a shop to share her creations. The opportunity came from Kim Duffy, owner of MIXT in Agoura's Whizin’s Marketplace, when she invited Sherri to take-up her own, large vignette within the popular design shop.

Inspired by this new opportunity, Sherri worked to expand her offerings by establishing an eclectic collection of tropic-meets-rustic decor, blending together the island feeling of Florida with the rustic charm of Southern California. Designed by Sherri, clusters of brightly printed cotton and linen pillows with fringe around their circumference brilliantly present a modern take on Sherri’s island childhood. One-of-akind woven tribal wall art imported from Africa, Indonesian “fish-catcher” lighting, and giant, dried pea podsturned-wall-art are just a few of the exotic treasures Sherri has to offer.

Her passion for the seaside and the world around her has continued to drive Sherri’s artistry, generating a warm and compelling energy through her wide and wonderful range of free-spirited products inspired by her past, and mixed with her present. SHERRI

YOGA by sports inacademy the Loft

at Pedalers Fork

Everyday it seems that all of the elements that make up a healthy California lifestyle are converging more and more, making the opportunities to enrich and treat ourselves to the things that feed the better parts of us both abundant and convenient. The latest example of this is the opening of the new Sports

Academy powered Yoga Studio in the loft at Pedalers Fork. The brainchild of Calabasas resident and long time group fitness and yoga instructor, Pam Kessinger, will be an extension of Thousand Oaks based Sports Academy’s innovative “Full Circle” concept that holistically focuses on not only the physical

body, but the individual’s mindset as well, making yoga the perfect alignment.

“My intention in creating the studio within Pedalers Fork is to make yoga accessible to as many people as possible.” Says Kessinger. “To demystify yoga and to make it

WITHIN ten10

available to people so they can have a space and an opportunity to learn and to connect with themselves. And that's really as simple as it is and we're doing that through community.”

In the context of balance and smart vision, the use of the loft space is really a stroke of genius. Pedalers Fork is already a farmto-table restaurant, a coffee house, a bike shop, and on top of it all has a certain zen to its design that is earthy and soothing in every respect. So to now be able to walk right upstairs and engage in one of the many classes to be offered will be an enticing addition.

“Our goal is to have a beautiful intimate setting where we can build relationships and really be a part of our community,” says Kessinger. “We can blend the yoga experience into the context of peoples’ lives. So in addition to the standard base of sessions we have, say it's a bachelorette brunch or bridal shower or a cycling group and they want to rent the room for a private yoga session, we will be able to do those things and make it more of a tailored experience for everyone.”

Classes will begin the last week of June, have maximum of ten participants per class, and will be priced on par for the industry

standards with tiered class packages available.

“Calabasas is where I live, it is my home, and Pedalers Fork is our local hang for my family,” says Kessinger. “So I am really excited to be working with them to bring what I love to our neighbors in such a beautiful and central setting. That's exciting!”

CREAMISTRY

When it comes to creating the perfect premium ice cream you could say that Creamistry, the new local destination for cool and made-to-order treats in the El Camino Shopping Center, has the art form down to a science. From the moment you walk into the place, you realize that something different is happening here. It would be simplistic to say that the process itself, an

orchestrated assembly line of tricked-out machines that come to life with bursts of billowing, frosty fog, is just a gimmick to make the experience Instagram-worthy, but that is only the cool part of it. It is the moment you take your first bite of the custom flavor you've just created that you realize the difference—an almost velvety, creamy texture that makes you know instantly that you will coming back for more.

The magic happens at the molecular level, for it is in that brief blast of liquid nitrogen generated fog that the flavors, toppings and “base” you selected—either Signature Premium (the richest, creamiest option), Organic (KSA Kosher & Non GMO), Coconut (non-dairy, vegan, lactose & gluten free), or Sorbet (nondairy & water based)— becomes the ice cream or sorbet.

“When you freeze something slowly it expands,” says Michael Shangaz, Manager. “However, when we flash freeze the creams or sorbets, it happens so fast it doesn’t have a chance to expand. That’s why it’s more dense and creamier than regular ice cream. It has no air in it, while regular ice creams can have around twenty-five percent air. That is the difference.”

Combine this with the hand-whisking-in of your choice of 30 different flavors and a variety of the more than 35 topping options from classics like chocolate chips to Captain Crunch, and the potential to explore new and delectable creations is almost endless.

Other more ready-to-go options are their “Creations” menu made up of dazzling and popular recipes envisioned by master ice cream makers, their brand new ice cream sandwiches that can also be customized, their patented "Nitro Shakes," and grab ‘n’ go pints in their eclectically assorted freezers. Prices range from $5.95 for a small size up to $8.50 for large, plus toppings.

GOOTZ scootie

Playing and music have always gone hand-in-hand. Both are an exploration and expression of one’s creativity. You even “play” musical instruments. So when R&B artist and multi-Grammy Award winner, Shawn Stockman member of the legendary band Boyz II Men, and his wife and entrepreneur, Sharhonda, decided to open a place that harmoniously celebrates both, it was a happy and natural progression.

Meet ‘Scootie Gootz,’ the new multi-faceted indoor family playground in the El Camino shopping center in Woodland Hills. Since the time mankind has evolved to living within dwellings, gathering around the hearth of a fire has gone from a matter of warmth, to a tradition of kinship, to a statement of style. There is perhaps no other establishment more devoted to these ideas than Encino Fireplace Shop.

Still in its original location, more than 30 years of serving the community has expanded the family owned

business to three additional locations throughout Los Angeles. It is safe to say that if you are in the market for anything that has fire as a feature, whether a fireplace, fire pit or barbeque, the Encino Fireplace Shop has everything imaginable to inspire your creativity and make your project come to life. From the moment you walk into their showroom, which features 30 burning fireplaces, until the moment you are sitting fireside at your own home, every step of the

process is meticulously managed by their team of designers, engineers and installers, who obsess about ensuring that every custom, high-end residential or commercial project is nothing short of perfection. Even theatrical production designers turn to them to add warmth and style to their film sets.

“We’re very big on design,” says co-owner of Encino Fireplace Shop, Talin Vartanian. “We take an A-to-Z approach to make sure the design is perfectly implemented.”

This is one reason why professional designers and architects return to their showrooms again and again; they know that whether they need to retrofit and modernize an existing fireplace or find the very latest in innovative design, all of the options have been beautifully presented and every detail has been thought through. Building upon this designer demand, the Vartanian’s latest endeavor, which is currently under construction and opening in the upcoming year, will be a four story showroom in Hollywood dedicated to the hearth. The one-stop destination for all things aflame will feature fully furnished vignettes with 70 burning fireplaces, a commercial kitchen offering cooking classes and a coffee bar.

FIRST MAKE THE DOUGH

Add the flour and salt to a stand mixer with dough hook attachment, pulse to aerate the flour, add the eggs and olive oil and mix on low speed till a shaggy dough forms, empty on to a floured surface and knead till the dough is smooth and slightly moist. Knead into a disk and cover with plastic wrap or damp towel and let rest 30 minutes. Can make a day ahead.

MAKE THE FILLING

While the dough is resting make the filling, heat up the olive oil on medium high heat, add the tomatoes when the olive oil is shimmering and sauté for 3 minutes until they start to blister then lower to medium heat and add the mushrooms, garlic, sage, and crushed red pepper. Sauté for 5-6 minutes until

mushrooms are tender. When done place mixture in a strainer and let excess liquid drain off. When the mixture has cooled down, add the mozzarella, Parmesan, and egg and fold into the mushrooms till it is well incorporated. Can make a day ahead.

INdays lompoc

THE TIME HAS COME TO UNCORK THE NUANCES AND FLAVORS OF THIS SANTA BARBARA COUNTY AGRICULTURAL AND WINE PRODUCTION AREA.

The city of Santa Barbara continues to enjoy status as Los Angeles' fashionable playground, with its destination dining venues, high-end art galleries, historic missions, stately homes and upscale retail flanking main thoroughfare State Street. In recent years, its Funk Zone and Urban Wine Trail infused youthful trendiness into the old money hub’s long-standing appeal.

In contrast, agricultural center Lompoc, an hour's drive northeast of Santa Barbara, had long been overlooked, even with major scientific events taking place at Vandenberg Air Force Base involving aviation and the U.S. Space Program. In recent years, however, Lompoc is emerging as an enticingly downto-earth destination with its bounty of artisanal produce, revitalized vintage “downtown” area, wine country picnic spots and quiet spaces for contemplation. On that score, celebrities and other public

figures also see Lompoc's great potential for a renaissance and are putting their money where their heart is. Julia Louis Dreyfus and husband and writer/director Brad Hall, for example, have invested a nice chunk of change into The Lompoc Theatre Project, which is putting efforts into the restoration and reopening of a 1920s-era theater.

Lompoc was incorporated on August 13, 1888, though the area was inhabited by the Chumash people centuries before European settlers arrived. Its mood and ambiance are shaped by institutions generations of residents have taken pride in, rather than tony art galleries and palatial spas. Its artistic identity, in fact, is very inclusive and inviting, with “Old Town” doubling as an outdoor museum with murals and vintage signs. Its vibrant commercial flower fields also make it (figuratively and literally) a breath of fresh air.

60 Hidden Hills Magazine | Summer 2018

While there is no Ritz-Carlton or Bacara near or within the Lompoc city limits (yet), there are several nostalgic mid-century motels lining the city's boulevards outside the central “Old Town” core as well as quaint bed and breakfasts in the center of town. The newest arrival is a Hilton Garden Inn (opened in 2017, hilton.com/Garden_ Inn/Lompoc) which is, by design, a bit more upscale than its sister properties located near major airports and college towns. While there are several Hilton hallmarks on the property, Gilda Cordova, Director of Operations for Lompoc Land Holdings (the parent company for the property) negotiated higher standards of food and décor with members of corporate headquarters to make it a choice address for picky business and leisure travelers.

Cordova and her team brought on Lompoc native, Conrad Gonzales, to build an evocative, but approachable menu for Valle Restaurant, the hotel's standout feature. While it has a relatively standard Hilton breakfast, the seasonal lunch and dinner selections could just as easily be on the menu at some of the Santa Barbara bistros off State Street or near the Funk Zone. While Gonzales already had a successful taco stand and catering company, he jumped at the opportunity to showcase Lompoc’s products with dishes that fit the “California cuisine” definition in terms of it being handmade, fresh and authentic to the area.

Augusto Caudillo, another restaurateur/chef, rolled out Scratch

Kitchen in 2015. Since the opening, it has become a popular hangout for many of the area’s winemakers. The endeavor is a labor of love for Caudillo, who worked for a catering company owned by Maili Halme (a noted Santa Barbara chef who now

operates Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos), and the Fess Parker Winery Resort and Spa before he split off to make a name for himself as a restaurateur within a frontier he feels deserves more upscale restaurants to accompany wines crafted in the area.

Caudillo blends his classic French culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Las Vegas with the farm-to-plate sensibility Lompoc lends itself to even with chain restaurants, diners and ethnic restaurants still going strong. His philosophy is less about reinventing food and more about procuring quality ingredients from the immediate region, and coming back to preparing every dish from scratch and doing every bit of preparation in house.

Top tier wineries in the area, including Sanford Winery, Kessler-Haak, Foley Estates Vineyard, Hilliard Bruce Vineyards, Melville Vineyards & Winery, and Pali Wine Company, fulfill the requirements for romantic weekends, from country-chic tasting rooms and aromatic production areas to beautifully landscaped enclaves where people can take in the rolling vine-covered fields as well as prime views of the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley.

THE TASTEFULLY STYLISH DAYTIME JAUNT COMBINES ARTSY SANTA BARBARA AMBIANCE, NAPA’S WINERY-DRIVEN CAN-DO SPIRIT, AND LOMPOC’S APPROACHABILITY.

Up-and-coming and established small production winemakers, meanwhile, have gradually transformed a former industrial park into The Wine Ghetto over the last couple of decades. The tastefully stylish daytime jaunt combines artsy Santa Barbara ambiance, Napa’s winerydriven can-do spirit, and Lompoc's approachability. While you will find great wines, what you won't get is stuffy attitude or sameness of other tasting rooms. Highlights include sparkling wine samplings at Flying Goat Cellars, the feminine charm of small lot producer La Montagne, Artisan Uprising’s rock-and-rollthemed tasting space, and the engaging conversation of pioneering woman winemaker and educator Kathy Joseph at her Fiddlehead Cellars, which also is a production facility.

Should you take your kids on a weekend getaway, you'll find plenty of activities to keep them engaged, even with nary a movie franchise character in sight. Those yearning to get an authentic taste of the Old West will want to trot by the Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary (returntofreedom.org), as well as repurposed homes and public buildings from the 19th and early 20th century that brings California and American history alive.

A jaunt to La Purisima Mission (lapurisimamission.com) takes visitors back in time to explore indigenous history and traditions in California. This mission, the most comprehensively restored of the California Missions, encompasses rooms, buildings, and courtyards

capturing what life was like for settlers, soldiers, and the Chumash nearly 200 years ago. The entry point is a museum-grade visitor’s center with beautifully preserved and curated artifacts. Guided tours of the mission are offered, and there are special events scheduled through the year where kids can interact with costumed docents representing those who lived there, as well as have the opportunity to make tortillas, leather bookmarks, and other native crafts.

In addition to the outdoor murals, Lompoc’s Old Town Heritage Walk offers more glimpses into its history via the 18 stops along the way, including the Andrew L. Huyck House (1890), Artesia School House (1876), Lompoc Museum (1911), and the Italian Stone Pines (planted

1940). On Fridays in July and August, the Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center stages the Old Town Market, a bustling outdoor marketplace features a farmers market, community booths, live music, and themed activities each week.

Science enthusiasts of all ages should plan a visit to the storied Vandenberg Air Force Base (http://www. vandenberg.af.mil/launch_center). While this summer’s highest profile event was the launch of the Mars-bound InSight Atlas 5 Rocket, the 30th Space Wing Public Affairs office hosts monthly visits to the Vandenberg Space and Missile Heritage Center at Historic Space Launch Complex-10, on the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. throughout the year. The monthly tours pull together the history of SLC-10 and all West Coast launch programs, as well as the story of the role Vandenberg AFB played in launching commercial, national security, and scientific polar-orbiting satellites. To sign up for a tour, one must write 30SW.PA.Workflow@us.af. mil, providing full name, date of birth, and driver’s license number at least 15 days in advance of the planned visit.

Aviation fans will also feel right at home. On July 13-15, 2018, more than 100 planes and their pilots make their way to Lompoc for the 34th Annual West Coast Cub FlyIn, a free celebration of flight and the vintage Piper J-3 Cub aircraft (explorelompoc.com/event/west-coast-cubfly-in) built between 1937 and 1947. Airplane lovers can walk among the planes, enjoy quality questions with the pilots, and witness daring flying events including flour bombing and spot landing contests.

For the truly adventurous over 18 crowd, Sky Dive Santa Barbara at Lompoc Airport (skydivesb.com) offers high fliers tandem diving experiences where they can view the full expanse of the Pacific, mountains and wine production region in their full glory.

On the surface, Lompoc may still appear to be a California expression of the archetypical American farm town. However, like a good bottle of wine, if you open it up and allow it to breathe and expand around to you, it reveals a complex and rich character.

Two years ago, I opened my phone on a December morning to something I was used to seeing on social media: a surf photo. Displayed in beautiful fashion upon my Instagram feed, posted by one of my favorite surf photographers, Todd Glaser. The photo was of 11-time World Surf League champion and famed pro surfer Kelly Slater riding one of the most perfect waves I’ve ever seen.

THE NEXT WAVE

PERFECTION OF THE WAVE.

The wave wasn’t huge like Hawaii, blue like Tahiti or foamy like California. It was just simply glassy and perfect. Written in bold letters across the photo were the words “MAN MADE”. It was at that moment that I realized the wave I was looking at was in fact in a wave pool.

Over the course of two years, this mythical pool flooded the surf and sports industry with videos of professionals and industry icons all getting their chance at the wave. After magazines and websites prodded and begged, information was leaked that the pool was actually created by Kelly Slate and acquired by the World Surf League (WSL), the surfing equivalent of the NBA. After a while of drooling over the wave I received a very interesting call. It was from my best friend and Hidden Hills resident, Chad Weber, who happens to work at the WSL, explaining that there was going to be a few days where the company and Kelly were going to invite the press and clients to experience the wave and that they wanted me to shoot and document the trip. In absolute shock, I said yes before

I even had the chance to hear the best part, I was going to surf it too. Three weeks later, Chad and I packed the car with our boards, wetsuits and camera gear and headed out.

As most perfect things are, the wave pool is hidden. Amongst cow farms, fields of crops, an Indian Casino and a proper 2-hour drive from any ocean lies the property known as the “WSL Surf Ranch” in Lemoore, CA. In addition to offering the most perfect and

consistent wave ever, Kelly Slater wants to bring surfing to places and people who have never been able to experience it. A genius, charitable and overall legendary feat for someone who has already accomplished so much for himself and his sport.

After entering the property through branded wooden gates that gave it the vibe of some secret chocolate factory, we were greeted by the WSL Ranch Staff. The team was comprised of veteran lifeguards and watermen from around the world who have

been trusted as water safety coordinators for the top big wave surfers. They walked us around the facility, which is simply and elegantly designed to offer everything someone staying at a five-star retreat would expect. We were escorted into a locker room that was more of a surfer’s dream man cave. It was decorated with photos of the ranch’s inception, surfing royalty and celebs who had visited before. A flat screen had constant loops of surf films and a ping pong table awaited an in between session tournament, but most importantly, it was stocked

with every type of surfboard imaginable. Once situated, I took the locker next to Slater’s, it was time to finally experience what only a handful of surfers on earth have ever witnessed.

The pool itself is something an 8-year old with a Black Amex would create: 2,000 feet long, 80 feet wide, 9 feet at its deepest, with a bottom that is designed and crafted to mimic iconic reefs around the world. It was completely still and had a weird haze over it that was reflecting the

Just as the sun began to emerge, the wave machine fired up. A loud engine noise echoed, and out of nowhere, a perfect, 6-foot wave grew from nothing. We watched with open mouths and even wider eyes as the wave peeled perfectly down the entire length of the pool until it dissolved into the water and once again the pool was just another pool. Chad and I looked at each other in total amazement. Five minutes and a bunch of curse words later, the beast fired up

again and we shook our heads as the machine returned to its original home at the opposite end of the pool, creating an equally perfect left hand wave.

As the day progressed, the waves continued. Everyone from beginners to industry legends paddled out and dropped in. It was surfed so many different ways and I sat on the sideline taking photos as some of the best board sport athletes in the world did their thing. I got my camera ready as it was Chad’s turn to go. He calmly dropped into the wave and surfed

it flawlessly, even making it out of the perfect barrel that the world had been talking about for so long. At this point I was foaming at the mouth to get in the water. Towards the end of the day and thousands of photos later, I finally got my chance.

A few others and I were loaded up onto a jet ski and dropped off along the edge of the pool at different markers. We were positioned so that if someone fell, another surfer would be able to catch the remaining portion of the wave. The standard feeling of being in

my wetsuit and on my board was replaced with a whole new vibe. Anticipation grew and after a few minutes of waiting, the wave arrived. I sat in excitement and fright. It moved towards me at a precise 18mph. I turned, paddled hard and dropped in. I raced across the face, laser focused on not falling, which of course caused me to under rotate a turn and go down at the halfway point. The perfection the wave offers is to be handled differently, less of an aggressive approach and more in a savoring, more enjoyable manor. Annoyed and frustrated that I just blew my wave, I sat back and realized where I was, what I got to do and who I got to do it with.

It was here at the WSL Surf Ranch that an outsider could actually see how many backgrounds revolve around surfing. Executives from Hurley, Beats, Verizon and Quiksilver mingled with pro snowboarder Travis Rice and world-renowned photographer Craig Stecyk as waves and laughs were had. It really was a melting pot of personalities who shared one common interest. This seemed to be the basis that Kelly built the Ranch off of. Surfing is such a powerful sport and lifestyle that brings so many different people together that it should not be reserved for those who have access to the ocean. By bringing the waves to landlocked locations, it will allow new people to fall in love with surfing.

If you would like to learn more about the WSL Surf Ranch and the upcoming contest being held by the WSL in September you can visit www.Worldsurfleague.com. You won’t be able to surf, but you will be able to see the world’s best surfers battle it out live.

& Music Festival, benefitting The Heart Foundation.

At 4pm, as crowds converged, Juliet Roberts kicked off the day with a set of her powerful and soulful rock, performed on the

matched the day perfectly. Local boys, Wildling, then rattled the oak leaves with their energetic Alt-Rock anthems, and CALICO the Band rounded out the first half of the music program, delivering their unique blend of California Country.

The food, drink and atmosphere in the front half of the ranch house property was so good that many did not even realize there was another element to the evening idling to unfold. As the sun began to set,

the large Main stage on the venue’s south side came to life with Seattle Soul emissaries The Dip blasting out their funky/retro grit, complete with a chromatic and clean horn section, and at golden hour Korey Dane and his band brought his brand of energetic and poetic Americana to the capacity crowd.

As night fell, the surprise special guest that had been promised was revealed as Robby Krieger of The Doors took the stage for a live auction of his freshly autographed SG electric

guitar (which alone brought in $12,500 for The Heart Foundation). Soon his band joined him and they rocked a set of classic Doors tunes, with Waylon Krieger on vocals and touring legend Phil Chen on bass. Hidden Hills’ own Elliot Easton (of The Cars) then delivered an added layer of excitement as he jumped in and jammed out to “L.A. Woman,” and the two Rock and Roll Hall of

Famers traded off guitar licks before the electrified crowd.

To round out the festivities, Headliners, The Spin Doctors (hilariously intro'd by Hidden Hills funnyman Howie Mandel) lit up the night with their signature style of 90’s nostalgia that got the crowd dancing and singing along with hits like "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong." With the nearly full moon, high

above the massive fir trees, the night was broght to a close with Robby Krieger joining the Spin Doctors to jam to "Roadhouse Blues."

None of this would have been possible without the generous support of Hootenanny's sponsors, each of whom were eager to bring a new special event to the community. The many vendors who donated food and spirits to raise funds for The Heart Foundation were just as excited to offer their creations to attendees, bringing memorable flavors to the festivities. Behind the scenes teams of vendors and volunteers also worked tirelessly were also most generous in helping to bring this event to life. A big thank you to all from Hidden Hills Magazine and The Heart Foundation!

The best local patio dining for summer

YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO FAR FROM HOME TO ENJOY

THE SEASON’S BOUNTY UNDER BLUE SKIES AND SUMMER BREEZES.

Outdoor dining abounds in Los Angeles yearround. However, restaurants with patios, decks, and porches just minutes from Hidden Hills take full advantage of the nearby mountains, the Pacific Ocean, and the season’s best produce and home-grown ingredients. Face it…summer in our hometown is just isn’t summer without a few dinners (literally) out with friends at these popular spots.

Though many of the area’s open-air dining rooms are local institutions, their appeal is as fresh today as they were when they first opened. Newer restaurants, meanwhile, are taking the continued zeal for “farm-tofork” freshness and passion for international culinary influences to new places--figuratively and literally--with menus and evocative settings that mesh beautifully with the California coastline.

THE PATIO AT CAFE HABANA

» Café Habana

3939 Cross Creek Road at the Malibu Lumber Yard, Malibu, CA 90265

310.317.0300

Rande Gerber’s artsy fusion of Cuban and Mexican food, decor, and culture has made itself at home at the Malibu Lumber Yard shopping complex. Taco nights, karaoke, a bar crafted from repurposed lumber rescued from Deadwood, South Dakota, and a Shepard Fairey mural add to its hipness factor. Just as the Café Habana restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn were inspired by revered restaurant La Habana in downtown Mexico City-a vibrant gathering space known for its fascinating clientele of Cuban and Caribbean expatriates, musicians, celebrities, and politicos-Café Habana Malibu seeks to recreate the same welcoming milieu in our area. Signature menu picks include fish tacos, Mexican-seasoned roasted corn, and sandwiches and burritos with a mix of Mexican and Cuban-inspired fillings sourced from nearby farms and purveyors.

» Carbon Beach Club

22878 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

This graceful spot overlooks the sands and ocean along Carbon Beach, with a beach house-inspired aesthetic that embodies the components of the perfect date night, thanks to the influence of designer Waldo Fernandez’s selection of blue-gray tones, white oak, and teak floors that open out to the ocean. The theme continues onto the carefully arranged land and sea menus, where white-tablecloth entrees and main courses

are brought to life with ingredients from One Gun Ranch and resident farmers’ markets. The bar team mixes a curated assortment of top tier spirits with small batch provisions, while the in-house sommelier hand selects an exceptional list from around the world to pair with various food items--or sip on their own at a leisurely pace.

»Inn of the Seventh Ray 128 Old Topanga Canyon Rd, Topanga, CA 90290 | 310.455.1311

The enduring enchanted forest setting and earthy menu stands firmly as a forerunner of the now widespread farm-to-table movement. That said, executive chef Bradley Miller and his team have brought the menus and presentation into the 21st century with nuanced and sophisticated dishes--with possible exception of the restaurant’s signature housebaked fluffy multigrain bread served in hearty slabs. Prior to setting up camp at Inn of the Seventh Ray, Miller attended Scottsdale Culinary Institute, did some stages in Europe, and cooked around the West before landing a career-making gig at Patina and received national attention as a contestant on FOX-TV’s “Hell’s Kitchen.” Today, in peaceful and lushly green surroundings, he finds inspiration within his carefully selected array of organic and local produce. Additionally, he enthusiastically gives shoutouts to the farms and protein purveyors on the menu.

The local outpost of King’s may be on the “valley” side of the hill, but the kitchen shows seafood is still “king” in the hands of cooks and team members who understand diners who go for what’s on the plate rather than any fancy name that may be assigned to the dish. Though a lot of ingredients are sourced close to home, the flavor influences cross the U.S. and then some, from fresh-caught oysters and clams adorned with favorite condiments on the side, to catch-of-the-day specials on ancient chalkboards, to the aromas of dishes simmering with every conceivable combination of spices and seasonings. While the informal setting and location at The Commons ensures its family friendly, seafood fanciers of all ages will appreciate the care put into the dishes and the details leading out onto the dock-inspired patio.

»Malibu Farm Restaurant & Bar/Malibu Cafe

23000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

310.456.1112

What could be more Southern California than a lovely meal along the Pacific Ocean along a vintage pier, with fashionable beach denizens and surfers riding the waves? Malibu Farm Restaurant and Bar’s deck alone delivers all of the splendor and then some. The fine dining restaurant is decked out in updated nautical/beach house chic. The restaurant also serves up prime people watching especially given the spots being ranked as one of the “most Instagrammed” restaurants along the coast. Prime catches on he menu include the Santa Barbara spot prawn corn dog. At sibling restaurant Malibu Café,

crowd-pleasing elements for the whole family include its brunch and prolific assortment of salads, tacos, vegetable heavy dishes and seafood options.

»Moonshadows

20356 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

310.456-3010

From 2001, when the Italian-born owners of Moonshadows reinvented the old space and opened its doors, it has been the ultimate go-to beachfront spot. Its success lies in its forging together the best elements of casual dining ambiance with fine dining preparations fusing Asian, Italian, and American culinary influences as well as a lively nightlife element, craft cocktails, and DJ music at the Blue Lounge Bar on the patio. However, it’s an all-thing-to-all-foodies destination with some added attributes. Those accolades running the gamut from Travel Channel’s “sexiest beach restaurant and bar in the world” to a multi-year recipient of Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence (2006-2011), The Michelin Award, and The Best of CitySearch.

»Nobu Malibu

22706 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

310.317.9140

When it comes to sushi, Pan-Asian dishes, and one-of-akind spins on Cal-Asian fare, Nobu is one of the highest profile names in culinary innovation. Then again, Nobu Matsuhisa, the original “Iron Chef,” has kept things interesting and fashionable in equal measure at all of his

outposts around the world. However, the sleek indoor-outdoor interior design, celebrity cache, and oceanfront views bring the Nobu experience to a different level. Truly distinctive dishes include Rosemary Panko Oysters, Lobster Sweet and Sour, Scallop Truffle Chips, Dover Sole with Crispy Spinach, Seared Toro with Truffle Teriyaki, and Prime Tenderloin with Miso Ponzu. These dishes, along with familiar classics, make this restaurant feel as new and different now as it did when it opened back in 1999.

» Ollo

23750 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265 | 310.317.1444

For years, Coogie’s was a peoplepleasing establishment with lots reliable breakfast and lunch plates (and a particularly good turkey burger). However, founder Nate Heydari, recognizing the clientele was developing a more sophisticated palate, transformed the old hangout in 2015 into Ollo, featuring a California/

Mediterranean approach and greater emphasis on dinners and more original choices for breakfast and lunch. Management counts among its purveyors Thorne Family Farm, One Gun Ranch, Silver Farm, DeJoria Farm, Niman Ranch, Pitman/Mary’s Ranch, Snake River Farm, Hobbs Ranch, Durham Ranch, Groundwork Organic Coffee, Charles & Company Tea, and Laird’s Guatemalan Hand-Pressed Espresso. The clean, simple decor rolls out into a dog-friendly patio and a very buzz-worthy bar serving clean, flavorful cocktails.

»Pedalers Fork

23504 Calabasas Rd, Calabasas, CA 91302 | 818.225.8231

To say there’s nothing quite like Pedalers Fork in L.A. is no exaggeration. The restaurant-turned-outdoorsy community hub is a hybrid of boutique bike shop, full-blown craft cocktail and whiskey bar, cozy coffee spot featuring fresh-squeezed juices and hot drinks prepared with its exclusive 10

Speed Coffee, breezy lunch spot, and farm-focused dining destination with a penchant for innovative recipes nodding to the local farmer’s market ethos. While it is conveniently located off the 101, stepping inside the establishment, especially the outdoor sections with its canopy of greenery transports guests to a setting epitomizing what has drawn people to California for generations. While the salad selection gets high marks along with vegetarian dishes and sides, the BBQ is one of the most buzzed-about offerings.

»Taverna Tony

23410 Civic Center Way, Malibu, CA 90265 | 310.317.9667

The spirit of the Greek Isles lives and breathes through Taverna Tony. While the patio setting at the Malibu Market is very idyllic, the local favorite, a fixture in Malibu since 1994, is equally celebrated for abundant portions of authentic dips, salads, sampler plates, succulent roasted lamb and chicken platters, as well as classic comfort foods like moussaka, saganaki,

and spanakopita. Live music and belly dancers on weekends add to the lively Mediterranean islands flair that keeps regulars coming in. The outdoor patio, adorned with terracotta flooring, blue tablecloths and fresh flowers adds to the well-loved restaurant’s existing appeal in the summer.

»Tra di Noi

3835 Cross Creek Rd, Malibu, CA 90265 310.456.0169

Tra di Noi is a solid group or date night destination restaurant any time of year. However, it takes on a cinematic luminosity during the summer months. Anybody who has found themself coveting the sprawling family style feasts depicted in Italian films and numerous Food Network programs will find Tra di Noi brings all of those sensory delights to our neck of the woods, and in real

time. The prolific menu features hand-crafted pastas, hot and cold seasonal appetizers and main courses, breezy cocktails, and an impressive wine list that goes with the ocean breezes as well as the food. Local purveyors include Thorn Family Farm, just up the road in Malibu, as well as independent producers from the Malibu Farmers Market and Malibu Olive Oil Company. Tra di Noi is also home to the splurgeworthy signature Orecchiette al Tartufo, prepared tableside with peas and mushrooms and topped with shaved pecorino cheese and fresh truffles. Another excellent summer choice is the Fruitti di Mare risotto with shrimp, calamari, clams, mussels and fish with asparagus and tomatoes in a white wine sauce.

Maverick (white) and Diesel (yellow) were the only two pups of their litter. The owners' original intention was to bring only one of them home to Hidden Hills but when they went to pick them up, the two were so bonded that it didn't feel right to separate them. The yellow, English labradors, now 3-years-old, are still inseparable and can often be found cuddling about the house. They love cats and chickens and horses, walks with Angel, and the beach!
